So Ubisoft are going all in on single player RPGs with Odyssey, completely ignoring the 'single player is dead!' crowd, while the kings of single player RPGs are going 'live'? There's something wrong with this picture. Who said single player is dead?

There's something wrong with this picture. Who said single player is dead? The internet, for they love to misinterpret what EA says and cherry pick what they say down to one or two sentences instead of reading the entire quote.

For anyone interested but didn't know, EA Vancouver took the game being made by Visceral and is looks to be turning it into an open world, multiplayer game ... with a single player narrative.

EA's Announcement"We are giving players etc" is a meaningless quote for the topic at hand. He never said anything about single player games in general, you are correct there. Which means his statement wasn't misinterpreted at all, because you can't misinterpret words that don't exist. The internet didn't twist EA's words, nor did they take things out of context. What the internet reacted to was EA's actions.

Which means his statement wasn't misinterpreted at all, because you can't misinterpret words that don't exist. The internet didn't twist EA's words, nor did they take things out of context. What the internet reacted to was EA's actions. It sounds like they did. And yet they didn't. Initially the internet interpreted EA's actions, not their words (basically show me the words people allegedly twisted, because I can't find any.) Anyway a month after the debacle Jorgenson said the game was turning out to be: "a much more linear game, that people don't like as much today as they did five years ago or 10 years ago."which launched the "EA thinks linear games aren't popular" meme/thing. But no words were twisted there, it's what he said. Then a month ago Henning danced around the issue of single player linear experiences, price points, and the market not being conducive to short linear single player experiences while praising Sony for continuing to keep those games alive. “God bless Sony for supporting these kinds of games, because they’re terrifying to make. They’re very expensive, and it doesn’t suit the model of having a massive open world or hours and hours of gameplay or running a live service, which is what everybody is shooting for these days,” she said.Combine this with what Hanveir said a couple of months ago and it's clear EA are shooting for big open world and multiplayer games because they're easier to monetise. None of this is from EA's own mouth but from what people have managed to piece together from various sources. But sure, it's a big internet overreaction based on people twisting EA's words. Feel free to keep thinking that.

None of this is from EA's own mouth but from what people have managed to piece together from various sources. But sure, it's a big internet overreaction based on people twisting EA's words. Feel free to keep thinking that. Well, from my point of view - every time I've read devs and insiders comments about' single-player games being done they made it quite clear that by that they mean a very specific type of games: ones the like of Uncharted... which that Visceral game was ostensibly supposed to be. There are more types of single-player or linear games though (like many Bioware games...), and the major difference between them and the 'Uncharted-like' games is that their shelf-life is longer and they can be expanded/stuff can be added to them, and considering how spacious the 'live service' term is, it can be done in different ways. So yea, the twisting did happen - because people somehow think that EA is now against all types of single-player/linear games. The proof of that lays in the fact that a ton of people point at examples of recent successful single-player games like AC: Origins or God Of War... games that are simply NOT like Uncharted, or Henning's canceled SW game and themselves are already utilizing the new 'live service' model (ACO is open-world while GoW has post-game content and updates adding stuff like NG+).

You're arguing a different argument then the one currently taking place. The discussion is specifically about the twisting of EA's words. That gamers so hate EA that they twist everything they say into absurd conclusions. That is what is being discussed and that is what Sanunes original post was suggesting. Point out the words that were twisted from EA, that lead the community to conclude single player games are dead. Show me the correlation between a quote from EA, and the internet twisting that quote and concluding single player games are dead. The fact is no words were twisted. The community concluded single player games were dead based on the actions of AAA publishers, and whether that conclusion is accurate or not is not what is being debated. If you think otherwise then feel free to show it. That Visceral devs came out after the closure and rebutted the community's theories based on EA's actions doesn't help your cause. EDIT: And keep in mind Jorgenson said what he did about linear games a month (at least) AFTER the internet blew up about single player games being dead.

I already came to terms with Bioware evolved into something I don't particularly care about.
Sad in a way because I loved playing their games. Not expecting much in SP gameplay from them and certainly will wait after release to evaluate purchase or not. Honestly, I am not even convinced there will be a DA4 I'm that pessimistic.
