Not to be obtuse or sound preachy but I don't get this whole level gating thing. I assume you didn't play AC Origins it was gated the same way, Valhalla is as well it just uses a different name for it "power levels". You cannot roam wherever you want in that either you have to follow the story even more strictly than in Odyssey as enemies in higher power levels will be far too over powered for you. In Valhalla even in the first area Norway there are enemies that are unbeatable in one area for story purposes. If you are following the story in Odyssey the gating should not be an issue as you will quickly level above these areas level limits and be able to roam where you want except for some of the really difficult L50 areas. This ceases to become an issue the further you go along and especially as you level your Spear up which increase ability strengths and capabilities. In Odyssey did you leave Kephallonia? If you do all the main and side story quests on Kephallonia you will get to the maximum level there of the enemies which I think is L6 easily but you can get higher. By boss fight are you referring to The Cyclops because at L6+ you should be able to beat him and the same for the Mercenary who you can avoid till later in the game if you want to. The fights will be hard but certainly by L6 you should be able to handle them. When you get to Phokis (you need to defeat The Cyclops), enemies are L9 to 13 and this can be tough when you first arrive (but doable I think I had already reached L10) but if you do the side and main quests you will level up really quickly. If you want to grind it to level up further (I did) and get more gear drops and roam more freely do the notice board quests repeatedly. Only the naval ones on the boards will be difficult. Long story short the Level Gating should not be an issue if you follow the story quests and this is the same for Valhalla. I didn't play Origins, I think the last AC game I played was AC III. And in Odyssey I only deviated from the story quests in order to get more XP so I would be properly levelled for the story quests. I haven't encountered anything remotely close to it so far in Valhalla, I haven't gotten a single piece of gear that I couldn't use immediately, nor any quests or enemies I couldn't handle due to being underleveled. Some slightly obnoxious unskippable cut-scenes and excessively hand-holdey tutorials during the prologue, but nothing but smooth sailing ever since then. I am glad you are enjoying Valhalla it is enjoyable but my experience seems to be completely at odds with yours in comparison to Odyssey, did you actually leave Kephallonia? I am genuinely interested because I think if you had progressed past there to Phokis, you would have found that gear drops etc were far greater and the gear variety and gear system far superior to Valhalla and I don't ever remember getting pieces I couldn't use straight away or at the very least within levelling up once or twice. I believe other people on BSN and I when we started playing Valhalla commented on this in terms of Valhalla being inferior in that regard and particularly with regards to the far superior mix and match options in Odyssey. But if you are enjoying Valhalla that's great.

Been over a year since I've played Valhalla's main story, but most of the new gear starts out at a low level and you have to upgrade it before you can actually use it as a higher level character, right?

Yes and no. You can wear it but have upgrade it. I can't remember exactly but I don't think it is level gated you just need rarer and more expensive resources to upgrade it which are only available in the higher power areas. It gets most value out of being used as a 5 piece suit or a 3/2 combination of pieces unlike Odyssey where you can build a set out of any particular armour type based just on its stats and the build you want make, Assassin, Warrior or Hunter. If that's what you are asking.

You need increasingly rare materials to upgrade Tiers; Superior, Legendary, Mythical etc. AND you need increasingly large numbers of standard materials to upgrade within the Tiers.

I don't doubt Odyssey is a good game if you have the patience to stick with it, but I find I have very little patience for games that I'm not enjoying. Having an obnoxious prologue/tutorial is sort of unavoidable, but once you're past that I want to enjoy myself, and all I experienced with Odyssey was frustration over butting up against level requirements on everything from gear to enemies and quests basically from the moment I started the game.

Well if you go back to the game you don't have to fight the Mercenary dude, it's optional to fight him at the start and he will appear in other parts of Greece if you don't. I'll keep that in mind, though the bit about the mercenary being virtually invincible even if you're only 1 level below him was the straw that broke the camel's back, not the entire problem. And after a bit of googling I see that the level gating was one of the main/most common criticisms of AC:O so evidently I wasn't the only person who had a major problem with it. I've also seen the huge gap between power levels in nearby zones in Valhalla (where you might have a power level 20 zone adjacent to a power level 220 zone) that you mentioned, so they apparently didn't completely learn their lesson from Odyssey... but to my mind its still a drastic improvement since I had to search out those areas on the map, whereas in Odyssey I was running into the level-gating issue without even trying to, at basically every single turn. The gear issue was particularly aggravating, since finding loot/better equipment is such a large part of these types of games, constantly finding equipment you can't use its extremely annoying, and makes no sense whatsoever from anything but a gameplay design perspective. I mean, what sort of coherent in-game reason could we imagine for why you couldn't use a helm you just found? "Oh gee, I'm not an experienced enough warrior yet to know how to use this fancy helmet, even though all you have to do is put it on your head". Like, wtf?

Duris: 'you'll regret this when the Cyclops shows up...he will just kill you anyways.' Me: *laughs in level 99 Mistios* Though it is fun to note that I started off trying to go on hard mode for this. And that lasted all of one fire fight because well I A died and B. there is apparently no auto healing which I found a bit weird considering that Odyssey does not have Vahalla's healing system. But yes, for the moment going to be happy with normal. And well this game is now in the lead in an important category. This is now my fourth playthrough with a game which in the PS4/5 console generation is the most times I have ever replayed a game other then BioWare and well I think this might virtually be the first time I have replayed a game after its sequel came out. Now a lot of this has been because they released a patch for it giving it some upgrades for the 5 but it is also a testement to the game's staying power. And well this game still feels so good to play. I think I know a lot of the cutscenes by now so there might be some boringness there but the combat is still pretty great, Greece is beautiful, and there is far more nostalgia to this game then a lot. That opening cinematic is still perfection. That said two things are going to take some getting used to. 1. Simple, facial animations. After Vahalla and watching Horizon it is very noticable how stiff everything is. I hate it so much but its there. 2. the usual getting re used to controls and styles of play and what not and getting back into the flow. Just I know its come up between the two but it strikes me as interesting just how much this game is 'power' focused. Me being used to ACV I was treating this game like ACV and while I didn't die I was still struggling a bit...but then when I remembered I could go chain gun on the devestating shot it got much smother. And in general its interesting the Archery. ACV I really appreciate the flow and power of it with being able to hit the 'perfect' draw. But the thing is to in ACV it was fully manual on aim, and I noticed in ACOD there seems to be a lot of generous tracking...you still need to make adjustments but its there. And well despite the above not sure how completionist I am going to be this time. I might not even do the DLC which is ironic since I think my HDR issues effected Atlantis so I might try Atlantis again but just not sure how much side quests I will do...but then I have already faught Talos and helped odessa...but come on that is pretty mandatory. So we will see. Lot will depend on if CDPR decides to release their patch for TW3 and if I end up enjoying Dragon's Dogma when I give it a try soon.

Not sure if I should go long form or short form on this. But I got up through confronting Elpenor after Megaris. And it was a bit of a weird experience getting there so far. I am quite sure this has probably happened before but that first little fort in Megaris...well I was still under threat but I came across them and they were under attack. By either mercenaries or animals or I think both. But this triggered them going up and lighting the bon fire...on fire. It wasn't directed at me so it didn't raise my bounty at all but reinforcements still came in and it was a minor nuisance trying to figure out what the hell was going on and dealing with everyone all...riled up. Oh and in this sequence I remembered that rush assassination can still drive your bounty up if you let it. And during this sequence to for some reason every time I went to my bow it really started to wig out. Oh and I also missed the goat scene again. I got meeting the Wolf but it seems I already recorded it *blows raspberries* And with the Athenian blocade while I normally do not really like the naval combat, probably my least favorite part of the gmae, it was interesting because the AI seemed to actually be either unusually wise or something i never paid attention to. But I got into quite a cat and mouse game against the final Athenian ship in the harbor as I was trying to ensure I had the advantage but it was actually making astute moves to block me. Ended up going completly around the island in the harbor of Megaris to hide my movements and well it kind of worked but even then it sort of was waiting for me. Which brings me to the store. Bought something with Oricalcum but on a whim I decided to check out the store to see if I got any *free* Helix Credits they sometimes hand out for glitches and stuff. To my surprise I had 2000 of them. Not to my surprise that anything worth getting is 2500. This is quite the dangerous and almost effective tactic on their part...making you come so close. But I am resisting because some of the gear may be fractionally better, but its not worth four bucks. Even though there was quite a few really sexy armor sets in there that I could at least use for Transmog and a couple of interesting bows.

Continuing on I quit 'early' with me just getting to the meeting. And the big highlight of the day is I actually killed Elpenor out in the wild before getting to the Pythia. . I mean I shouldn't toot my own horn on this too much since this is my fourth PT...but I did have the hunch that he was there so I made sure to find him. Though I probably have gotten the Pytia killed...again. That's annoying. I was a bit too confident that my crit would trigger as I was going to kill the last guard. But it didn't. From a trope perspective I always find it a fascinating how I play Kass with the Cult. She is normally kind, caring, level headed, and compasionate. She is tough but probably the character which engages the least in 'the cold calculus' of war out of any of my female characters...well no wait there is my Ryder to but then I play her completly different from any of hers. So yeah it just drives home just how seriously pissed and how much the Cult drives her under her skin when she threatens to strangle the Pytia of all things. She really hates the Cult. In a general play through sense...well one thing Vahalla does much better then Odyssey (probably the only thing) is the whole base system and the random question marks and clearing them out. The trouble is that I am again ignoring most of them this playthrough but well again hates the cult so clearing out areas that I find which has her guards...but then despite not wanting to...it also feels weird to not actually clear it out to get it checked off and get the Xp. Its weird. And archery. It seems that this game's bow tracks the enemy far more then I gave it credit for. A cult guard was dancing all over the place and holding it with devestating shot ready and it just danced with it. Which Vahalla requires a lot more manual aim...I think...which results you in having to hold it at draw longer. So...realism. Archery realism. The Odyssey system is more realistic because you can get the shot off faster and more accurate but the Vahalla system is more accurate and feels better because of the 'perfect draw' system. If only they combine the two. . But then this is weird because I do wonder if Vahalla has more aim assist then I remembered...something I will have to keep in mind for a future PT.

Up to Andros. Probably commented on it before now but man is it worth pointing out just how poorly put together the whole meeting scene is in the Cult's lair. It would have been interesting if they could have actually had done the same trick with Elpenor or another cultist that they did with Alexios/ Kassandra and just have them in the proper robes. No one noticed her voice? Or the fact she had very femine legs? And Deimos who none of these people trusts goes 'who are you' in front of everyone else before bashing someone else's head in? Yes sitcom logic is a thing but its always annoying to point out. Which is a shame because in an otherwise pretty great game with a great story this scene should have more weight...and it still kind of does. But this is just one of those things that I guess sticks out more in a fourth play through. It will be interesting to that for the first time I skipped getting off at every island to get the quests in the log with Eubea and then...the one with the edipus tragedy. Not sure I will bother to do the latter though the Eubea one is always a must do.

Got to Athens after a side trip to Megaris. Also started to hunting down the Cult. Got the one in the Megaris port and the one in Andros. And also picked up with Odessa. Is there ever a right answer there? I think I usually agree with her that she is the victim but it just does not sit right. And I guess that is it for tonight.

Actually I most certainly did NOT recruit her. I did her quest and sided with her but otherwise there is something a little...off putting about Odessa? Granted I do not think I would really bargain with that particular cult member anyways so its a moot point as you say but this is a rather interesting thought...again since I swear we keep having this conversation. So today's theme? Doing errands for Perikles and pretty much doing everything thaat I have done three times already....though maybe with some twists. I actually was able to get into the area where they were keeping the vote for the Ostracism without being seen...at least fully. I was quite proud of myself. It was quite close going in and leaving a couple of times. The highlight though was the captain of the area saw me and came up to investigate, I hid behind a wall with Kass, and then he left but I decided that wasn't worth it so I started whistling...but... he didn't take the bait so I ended up just trolling him for a few minutes. But yeah then got the vote without any problem which might actually be a first and well my memory stinks but I am sure it does add a couple lines of dialogue. Also decided to play more coy with Sokrates and I enjoyed that he still logicked us oout. The snake charmer I came across him sleeping...I didn't think it could be that eays...thought he had snakes with him. But I got him with a rush assassination. Though speaking of sneaks point for the game over Vahalla...I always did appreciate how brutal the combat was on both sides. Freaking snakes can take you down if you aren't care. I left Eivor as such a unit that she was basically immortal. Anyways finished off by killing Brison. Shot him with a Predator shot and then he...toppled down to the bottom level of the quarry. Forced me to go down and get him. Under penalty of being seen.

Got up through the symposium. This time Kass did NOT accept the dress which was weird and there was a lot of dialogue on the subject. OH YEAH and oh oops. Apparently not doing the Kepholonia plague quests counts as doing it and having negative outcomes happen because Phoibe mentioned the rumor of the blood fever spreading which I don't think I ever triggered before. Or least not unintentionally. And from a gamey perspective 'actions have consequences'...accept in this case it makes ZERO sense since if you do the quest the people there was quite content to sword the family to death and only it was your intervention that talked them out of it. So I am annoyed. Also Kass made a casual mention that she would go back and check on things just because.
Some of my memory sucking but it is an interesting disctinction which the game brings up and I do find it rather...interesting. Sokrates in like his first conversation with you mentions what our line of morality is and what we would do that would cause the line to move...or not. And well I have a line, and Kassandra has a line as I play her, and well I think in general it keeps to it. But in the back of my head it is funny because in this case 'getting to content' is the big line in these games because well gamers generally you do want to experience as much content as possible, if you get these games new you can drop anywhere between 50-100 bucks on them so naturally you want to experience a kind of heavy game with a lot of content and preferably a lot of quality contnet. Even on repeat playthroughs sometimes you want to experience a character's journey or a quest chain so you have to work through morally questionable quests where the game railroads you to get to the *good* stuff with the actual conversations. Now I'm not complaining because even the best RPGs tend to be stories so railroading to make a point does often happen. Just in this case Kassandra still sneaks into an Athenian records office, assaults a bunch of guards, and forges a signature. Of course after hearing the truth the game provides you the opprotunity to change your mind, and Sokrates waxes eloquent on the subject...but there we go.
Anyways wrapped up and killed two more Cultists and got up to Korinth. Had a lot of fun in general in this play session. First off in the aforementioned Records office I almost got caught so I retreated to an outbuilding, the guard followed me so I beat him. Then did an arrow style thing as I then charged in and knocked the two guards out with the knock down arrows. Then later on in that initial combat with the thugs attacking the Hetarae I actually did my trick from Vahalla and multi shotted all the first group, the crit damage activated so there we were on that though could have just rush assassinated everyon I suppose.

Got a fair bit done today but not a lot to talk about. Did the Monger and then dropped off the Heterrae in Mykanos so I started the Kyrah rebellion arc. Oh actually it was funny when I was going over to Delos I landed in the North of the island so I just killed the bear on my way down before turning in the quest. I love that they included seperate dialogue for that.

Did you kill the Monger in secret or let the ladies kill him in public? secret The public execution is so much better and more deserved.

The public execution is so much better and more deserved. admittedly this is probably the toughest decision in the game for me from both a moralist perspective and a RP one. Afterall I'd be more interested in a public trial and having justice be done...but I also think from Anthousa she really isn't interested in any such thing either and there is something abit off putting about her desire to display his body and have people see a bloody duel. No she is after revenge/spectacle. And meanwhile Brasidas does have a point about power vacuumes. Though it is a moot point given she displays the body regardless.

I didn't know she displays it regardless. Then again I never listen to Brasidas (especially after the revelations in the Atlantis DLC about him). But overall I think it's better to let his victims get some catharsis as at least some form of justice over him just being swept under the rug. And yeah I know it means the one cultist later has to be killed, but he deserves it anyway after all the lives he ended or ruined (he speaks of his family, ut doesn't give a damn about any of the others he hurt). And with how I play, I still get enough evidence to expose the traitor Spartan king.

Today was a bit of a wild one.
Continued on with Podarkes's and his rebels and a lot of strangeness happened. First up when going through the fort with Kyra...well I went through the fort with Kyra. She decided for whatever reason to just start walking through the fort and join me in the attack which got her into a fair bit of trouble so I was not able to really stealth it that well. But got it done and then she just continued walking through the fort...so had to go back in to trigger the cutscene which was outside to confirm that the game glitched. Also, did Call to Arms and I should have known better though it was a while but since this was a weird set up for a conquest battle. And well seems that pre empted all the stuff with Theleatas so...oops. And then killed Podarkes...actually it was funny now that I think abut it. I also did 'M is for murder' and I was just about to get the doll but Podarkes was there in the room and well he woke up so I had to knock him out. Anyways I still think he was knocked out by the time I got there to kill him. And then I forgot if you did the bear quest what's her face showed up as a lover for Barnabas. And a LT. Of course I let her join the crew and even if she wasn't a goldy I still would have let her in.
From there did the quest where I gave Alkibiades...cast...to that officer and I blamed Alkibiades.
Ended the night on a rather bitter bill. Went to Argolis next for the main story and well I decided to humor the guy this time and save his patient. And well he needed me to get something for me. First big stealth fail of this Playthrough and this quest always tends to give me trouble. But yeah in the end saving that one guy cost me probably a half dozen Athenians or so, two mercenaries, and Sokrates's patient. I do try and play Kass a little peaceful and not so quick to kill, but also as someone who doesen't really dwell on things. I think this will bother her for awhile.
