PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A THREAD TO DISCUSS ASSASSINS CREED ODYSSEY AND SPOILERS WILL BE ABUNDANT. As Odyssey has now been early released I thought it would be great to have a thread to discuss what people are doing in the game and to have a place to ask questions about quests, equipment, abilities etc. EDIT: As per DragonKingReborn comment below: "As a suggestion; since users coming into this thread may be at different stages of the game, it might be a good idea to consider putting anything other than generic screenshots behind spoiler tags with a note above the tag saying what is dealt with behind it.
Similar to;
Spoilers for "Blood Fever" <- a quest I saw mentioned in the other thread
Spoilery Spoilery Like so.
That way, people who are not at that point yet can choose to avoid it and may continue to contribute."
Enjoy. DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO SEE SPOILERS for AC Odyssey

So for the past two days I have had a really great time immersing myself in AC Odyssey. I am really enjoying the game so far, there are a few things that have stood out already that are annoying like in combat not being able to one shot NPC's with shots to the head. There is also on PC something wrong with the timing of the assassination key, you hit it but the NPC reacts as if they have discovered you then they are assassinated. Overall though combat seems to be an improvement on Origins in my personal opinion playing on PC.
I have enjoyed all the quests I have done so far, all feel relevant and the environments are beautiful.

Is game good early in and how does it play out combat wise? I am enjoying the Melee combat much more than I did AC Origins but its still early days. The bow has been made useless as an stealth/assassination weapon at least early on as there are few enemies you can take down with one shot, meaning if you use it in a fort or compound all you do is alert the other guards etc. There is a perk/ability you can get that increases damage for the bow but I haven't got it yet so that may eliminate that a well. They have made "Parry" easier to use which I like but have heard others say its too easy.

I am an AC fan so I pre-ordered it so maybe I am not the best person to ask. At this early stage I think its a great game but if you aren't a keen AC fan then maybe hold off and wait for people to finish the game and get feedback then.

Is game good early in and how does it play out combat wise? I'm early (level 13), so bear that in mind... The combat is very, very easy. It's block/parry + counter-attack, or dodge + counter-attack with little timing required. You can literally hold the parry buttons and just wait. Non-scrub enemies, such as commanders and mercenaries, are very spongy. You pummel them for several minutes before they eventually drop. It kind of sucks. It feels significantly less visceral than Origins' combat, in terms of feedback. Both audio and mechanical feedback makes it feel light and unsatisfying for me. Lastly, it's linked strongly to that damn power wheel. The positive is that adrenaline generates rapidly as you hit your foes. The negative is that you only have 4 active powers, and spamming them over and over feels very repetitive. It's like a slightly less shitty version of DAI's Warrior. I'm not enjoying it at all. I can only hope it gets better as I advance. The characters are enjoyable and the content is mostly standard AC stuff. The quests often exist independently of quest-givers, which is a nice change of pace for the series.

It seems to be a huge game that's going to take time to fully experience. This means fully formed opinions might be slower in coming. There are a number of other good games dropping soon, and plenty of great ones to go back and enjoy. This one will be cheap around Black Friday, if you live in the West. I'd say it's a "wait and see" game at present.

Personally I'd say wait for a sale. It's not innovative in any way that you'd be missing out on anything. It's open world approach REALLY drags it on far longer than it needs to be too. I'm also not a fan of AC games though so yeah š¤·. ----------------------------------------- As for my own experience with it so far: I put 3-4 hours into it Tuesday and I wasn't impressed, combat can be sloppy at times and the characters VAs are so LIFELESS in various instances. I got up to 8 hours yesterday and my mind still hasn't changed, it's an ok game to pass time by, but it's kind of average when it comes to me having "fun" with it. It's a Shame, I was wanting to actually like an AC game for the first time since the very first, it has the Greek theme and supposedly this RPG push, but they aren't good enough to keep me wanting to come back And while I've heard some hardcore AC fans say this isn't a true AC game, I fully disagree as it plays a lot like the other garbage AC games.

Is game good early in and how does it play out combat wise? I wanted to update my earlier feedback based upon additional experience. The combat is really crappy in the early going. It gets better in the mid to late teen levels, as the better skills (like overpower attacks) come available alongside better gear. The jump in efficacy and enjoyment is dramatic. They should try to tweak those lower levels if at all possible. It was dreadful for more than a few hours. By level 20, you have good gear and a good assortment of powers. You're facing foes who use some of the same powers against you, among other things. It's so much better at that point. Here come the relatively tame spoilers: I've finished Chapter 3 and met the creepy Cultists. I hope they end up being more than the mustache-twirling villains that most writers reduce the "Templars" to being. So far so good. The family and Cultist threads were the ones I expected to most enjoy, and I'm pleased with how they've started. There are a lot of cool things that could be done with thus setting, and I'm optimistic in regard to where they will take us. I had a side quest in which I met and helped a dude whose sibling had just died. I failed to mention to him that I'd just murderized said person. No good would've come of bursting his bubble regarding his "good and kind" sibling.

No good would've come of bursting his bubble regarding his "good and kind" sibling. I am glad to hear your comments as I hit a wall yesterday upon leaving Kephallonia and arriving at Megaris. SOME SPOILERY THINGS BELOW I am assuming it is scripted but I thought it was a bug at first, so I get on the boat with Barnabus and win some sea fights and move on to recruit the archer guy and then head for the Athenian blockade. Sea battles haven't been an issue so I charge in and then go to fire arrows ummm nothing, Javelins ummmm nothing, so ram my way to victory. WTF happened to the crew that was with me a couple of minutes ago, I literally had no crew and/or I missed a prompt or something to go recruiting before running the blockade. Anyway ran around for about an hour and killed the mercenary Nikadopoulis or whatever his name is and since it was nearby thought I'd do a quick reconnaissance of the palace with the head Athenian guy in it. It has become very apparent the dev's really want you to engage in melee combat but that is not why I play AC games. I expect through planning, strategy and patience to be able to stealth 90% of any mission but that just does not seem possible at this stage of the game for me anyway. So I sit and watch the guard rotations etc of the palace and think what the hell they are only 2 levels above me but I'll do a practice run. Firstly I cannot one shot any of the guards on the wall, so have no choice but to melee them. Then there is a distinct lack of stalking zones anywhere near the head guy but that doesn't matter anyway as he is constantly surrounded by 3 other Level 10 guards who never go anywhere where else so its impossible to cull the herd. The kicker was getting to a place where in any other AC game I could have just assassinated him and fought the other guards and then fought my way out but no. I hit assassinate on the leader and his health goes down significantly but he doesn't die and then his health and armour bar fill up again. I am not sure if the mission is gated until you are a certain level or whether the game is programmed that way but I lasted all of about 1 minute in melee against the 4 of them by which time at least four archers had also joined in and I was easy pickings. So if this is going to be how it is, in that they have taken stealth which was the soul of AC games out of major parts to make you use melee then that is a sad thing for me. All that being said I am still enjoying the general gameplay and am looking forward to doing some more exploring today.

So I have a question. Each area on the map is labeled with the dominant faction, how do you side with a faction of your choice?
Spoiler here too. I cleared magaris so I did my first conquest battle. In the descriptions it says you can be defender or attacker, but it doesn't actually elaborate on how you can pick, hence my question š
I'm wondering if I have to still kill Spartan leaders/destroy their supplies just to initiate the conquest battles, but if I'm wanting to side with Sparta why would I have to kill their leaders and such? Doesn't make sense but if that's the only way to weaken the dominant faction to trigger the conquest battle, then I'm guessing I pick my side in the conquest battle by killing which ever side in said battle I oppose? If so then Jesus Christ Ubisoft.
I feel like I anwsered my own question but I'm hoping I'm wrong.
FYI: this game is fucking HUGE. I've just now reached my third area (Phokis) and I have like 13 hours of play time, I don't think I'm even half way to 1/4 of the game by looking at how much of the map is uncovered.

I got so much thoughts on this game and so little time to write up.
Ok, conquest. So far it looks mostly like an extra grind for loot and maybe some RP, but otherwise optional except the first tutorial conquest. When the controlling faction loses enough power in an area (mostly because of you looting, burning and killing) two camps activate in the area - attacker and defender. You choose which camp to go to and there you can trigger the battle. Winner keeps the area.
I don't know if a battle can happen without your input or if the Faction power can drop to critical without your help.

Dazk, you can avoid most of the melee and be a phantom in the night. Not a very dangerous phantom at first though. You shouldn't have trouble assassinating the regular mooks. Yellow ones and bosses are tougher and need a lucky crit or the special 200%+ ability. And gear. Proper gear for the proper task. You won't do well in quiet stabbing if you are not decked in gear with Assassin damage. Same goes for archery. You can headshot kill mooks if you have full Hunter gear and maybe the passive that boosts Hunter damage.
I once made the mistake of going in a Conquest battle in my Assassin gear. Well, didn't go well until I switched to Warrior. It's more noticeable and relevant at level 15 or at least I noticed it at that time. Right now at level 20 the damage difference on my backstab with Assassin gear on and off is about 40%.
Leader NPCs are a pain for stalking because they always have bodyguards. BUT!!! I think I found a workaround. The Leader NPCs go to sleep at night and apparently they like to be alone in their bedrooms, go figure š There are usually a couple of entrances and while one is swarmed with a wall of bodyguards, the other usually has no guards or just one regular mook that can be 1-shot. My crowning moment of awesome was infiltrating a heavily guarded house, knocking out just the one mook, 1-shot the Leader in his sleep with a huge crit and leaving without any alarm. I even threw the knocked down mook in the leader's bed. To confuse everyone.
And really try to avoid killing Leaders in the open in front of witnesses. I did it once from a rooftop in the middle of every guard. DING!!! Five Mercenaries started looking for me. I didn't care at first and just thought "extra loot". But the buggers started ambushing me everywhere in a pack of 3. During quests, roaming, in forts, everywhere! They even trolled me. I hide in a shrub, they park themselves 15 meters away and look straight at me, just waiting for me to pop out and the game to allow them to spot me...
I tried to lure the Mercs to a remote area with a friendly NPC I was doing a quest for. Two birds with one stone, right? Wrong! Turns out turning in the quest at that stage involves a scripted ambush from many bandits in the area. So I got in in one of the biggest clusterfuck battles of all time. In a remote farm. And left no one alive to tell about it.
Oh, and if you happen upon a quest involving a guy named Stupideos locked in a cage? Just go with it. It's a corny and silly quest, but the way I resolved it made me laugh.

dazk , I too think the changes to assassination suck. Driving an oversized spear head through someone should nearly always be lethal. I have every currently accessible damage-boosting skill for assassinations and still can't one-shot officers. It's somewhat disappointing, since it means that every fort becomes a battle. No more ghosting through and killing everyone without being seen. Archery gets better, but I still can't one-shot enemies without using powers. Everything is tied to the fucking power wheel, and it sucks. Just let me be badass with my bow and shooting skills. I really miss my Predator Bow from Origins. I used that thing at range and up close. It was my primary weapon, no doubt. The predator skill evolution pales in comparison. I'm hoping that my assassination and headshot archery will eventually be lethal, but who can say? Even if it finally is, at which level will that be? I'm in the mid-twenties, now. (26 I think.) The game is feeling like a serious grind in many ways. It reminds me of all of the filler in AC Rogue that was completely divorced from the main story. There are cool elements here, like hunting down the Cult of Kosmos. The grindy gameplay and overly large map, though, makes it a bit tedious. If I like this gamme enough to play it more than once, I can't imagine doing so without NG+. I don't think I'll ever want to grind from level 1 again. (To be clear, any game I buy gets played dozens of times. For future replays to be in doubt is a disappointing thing.) So far, I hate naval gameplay. The controls are so unintuitive. Why reinvent the fucking wheel with every game? Black Flag had great controls for naval combat and navigation. Why not use them? Odyssey requires way to much fiddling and has a poor controller scheme. I've reached a point in the game at which I need to make a lengthy naval voyage, so I just turned off the game for now. I have a headache and can't be bothered to play anymore at present.

Got my first trophy. ] That's one way to have your teeth cleaned. hahahahahahahaha ] I chose to play as Kassandra. Too bad there wasn't an option to add a scar to the face or even have different color of hair. I like the parry. Found a couple of spots. Ended up in a spot where I fought the unkillable dog/wolve/whatever. I guess when the enemy has a red looking stop sign above their head it means I need to be at a higher level to kill it. The game looks good. I like the part with following the bird. I'm sure as I play more I will get use to the controls.

Thanks saandrig I spent lots of time just exploring in Megaris yesterday and figuring things out and started to get far more comfortable with my strategies and actual combat. I also had the thought that I could advance time by meditating and seeing if the Boss guys go to sleep without their guards so good to know that's true. I now have the zoom upgrade for the bow so have been able to take down some more people than just the lower levels with one shot which is good. I am getting better at finding ways to do that then move somewhere I can use the ability that lets you jump from cover and stab them with Leonidas spear and chain it. That at least helps lower the number of guys to fight. I made that mistake with the leader guy in Megaris who I actually didn't know was the leader I had to kill for the Spartan guy Stentor. I was in full ship recruitment mode (which I still am not sure about but have sent at least 30 guys to the ship) and there were 5 Athenians 2 asleep and three just sitting there and I thought great more recruits. But I kill the sleeping guys, take down the leader and all of a sudden damn mercenaries and guards come from everywhere. Anyway they all died and I can go back to Stentor but have decided to hang around and complete as much stuff up as possible to farm Drachmae to upgrade the ship and also to farm XP to get ahead a few levels of the next map section. I did a bounty from the message board yesterday and the reward was 900 Drachmae!!!!! When you talk about Assassin Gear and Warrior gear do you mean the bonuses you get for Assassin etc on the armour? I am not sure why but I am way heapy in damage Assassin wise, its like 5 times Warrior and Hunter but I don't have any major bonuses for Assassin on hardly anything. I assumed it was because they were the main skills I had invested in. I did that scripted ambush mission and at first thought it was just a coincidence. I look forward avidly to meeting Stupideous The highlight for me in Megaris so far has been meeting up with Odessa again and doing her quests and spending some alone time with her. Kassandra must have been good because Odessa is now a Lieutenant on the ship.

dazk , I too think the changes to assassination suck. Yeah its very disappointing, I just loved being able to do a whole palace in Origins and not once being detected. I had more success yesterday and felt far more comfortable with combat having got the zoom arrow upgrade in taking down at least lower level guys. I am getting better at doing that then finding a spot where I can use the ability to jump out assassinate with the spear and chain it to take a few more out. Then hopefully get an assassinate move with the spear on the higher level guys so they are not at full strength when I have to melee them. I know what you mean by the grind but I have decided that Megaris is going to be my grind spot for a while. I am hating having to upgrade my gear every level to try and get an edge and also I can't seem to accumulate enough Drachmae to upgrade the ship. So going to stay here and try and get as many message board missions done before I get bored to raise money and get ahead a few levels. I am yet to do any Naval stuff other than the storied bit to get to Megaris. I didn't even enjoy that so I want to enhance the ship as much as possible so I don't have to worry too much in naval combat going forward. I am confused with the recruitment, am I recruiting knocked out enemies just to be Lieutenants or am I recruiting crew as well? I have sent at least 20 to 30 guys to the ship, I assume it will tell me if I have enough sailors. You seriously sound how I sounded to myself playing Origins, I didn't end up playing NG+ in that but it is the only way I would have played it if I did again. I hope you can still enjoy the game even though its frustrating you at the moment. I eventually got there with Origins although the game will never be one of my favourites.

The red skull above the head usually means "RUN" unless you can find a good spot where you can cheese the enemy from, dogs for example can't climb tents. Yeah that teeth cleaning scene was fairly "confrontational"

dazk, I remember well your frustration with Origins. Itās a shame every game canāt please us all! I really like some parts of Odyssey, while other parts are very annoying. Iām hoping Iāll like it on the whole. I think Iām really going to like the story. All three main threadsā family, cultists and Isuā are to my liking. Maybe Iāll āgit gudderā at the stuff I hate and learn to like it more. Money doesnāt seem to be a problem in Odyssey. Iām always swimming in drachmae. Pretty much everything pays well. I like that. Why be a misthios if it doesnāt pay? Recruits become lieutenants. Best I can tell, you can never have more than 6 active. They boost ship performance, kick butt during boardings, and can be called individually to aid in combat with one of the combat skills. Evie Frye is a free UbiClub reward, but I canāt handle anachronisms on that scale, so Iāve not claimed her. I think itās hilarious how you can invite nearly every scrub in Greece to join your crew. My current boarding party is 6 women in robes, 5 of whom have no weapons. They punch the defending crews. š

Good to hear re the money, I admit I have been upgrading all my gear every level and that cost me $2,000 each time so one of my reasons for staying in Megris for a while is I wont have to upgrade my gear until I decide to leave and I can start on upgrading the ship. So why when I took on the Athenian blockade did I not have any crew, do you know? Is that scripted, because I couldn't use arrows or Javelins. I am not sure if had changed the crew from Baranab's to the Assassins option before that could that have been a reason? So the guys you recruit are only options as Lieutenants? So I can dismiss the vast majority of the guys I recruited yesterday. I like having Evie as a Lieutenant, she had to fight alone to defend the ship while I boarded a ship alone in the Athenian blockade.
