For reference, here is a pivot table (I hate you, excel) of the responses to the Dragon Age Subreddit Demographic Survey 2018Obviously this shouldn't be taken as the gospel truth, we would need to account for the demograpic makeup of the DA subreddit vs all DA:I players, but we do know that EA/BW keep their own records on this information. But I'm pretty sure the conclusion as far as which races are played least is the same (Dwarves and Qunari) There's proper data somewhere or some comment from the devs, I'm pretty sure of it, which says the same. no one wants to be a mage dwarf? weird. i mean i know dwarves can't use magic (well, two of them might... *evil grin*), but i'd think people would at least want to play as one anyway...

oooooooooh! how about, next game we play as solas in disguise? =D In the vein of DA naming patterns, I propose that this character's name be Sid (Solas-In-Disguise)

I read that completely wrong at first since the headings aren't aligned with the columns and I about took serious issue with your chart. I thought it claimed there were 0 female elf mages. I was like, HAHAHAH GET OUT. I think literally just under half of players are female elf mages. Most of them played by dudes As for me, I'm happily your human male warrior. Just ask, and I'll flex for you.

I prefer elves, but they were destroyed in both DA2 and Inquisition. I'm tired of elves looking like pixies; the males look like children. I want more tribal, manly looking elves! I want something like this. I'm done getting elves that look like this.

I mean, elves in DA have always been lithe - I personally think DA2 went a little wonky with the faces and DAI went a little wonky with the (male) bodies, but generally I like the look of them. I think if you want a really burly character you're better off playing a qunari/dwarf/human.

It was only DA2 and Inquisition that made them look like pixies. This is one of the concepts for elves for DA. Why can't they look more like this at the very least. Just because they are elves doesn't mean they have to be skinny. They should really go back to the original concept for elves.

I mean, aside from this concept art the elf models in DA were just slightly squished down, skinnier versions of the human models. The slender elves concept has always been pretty consistent across all DA games even if the implementation has been a little off now and then. That said, nothing wrong with having a different preference.

I wouldn't mind playing an elven male if a basic greatsword didn't dwarf them while them simultaneously looking like they'd break if a tree branch fell on them or god forbid they fall off their horse. But, it's hard to take a male elf in DAI seriously as a leader overall. Also, facial hair is cool and elven men technically don't grow facial hair... let alone body hair.

Zev was a buff muscular short man with pointy ears. nothing about him that was pixie like imo. It would be nice to have the male elves go that direction.

It's just ridiculous to think elven men can't grow beards. Hair growth is usually associated with testosterone. Given male elves have testicles, they should have beards and body hair. Even female dwarfs have facial hair option for goodness sake, it's just absurd to think male elves can't have facial hair. You really can't boil it down to lore either, because even origins had a male elf with facial hair.

Biology is a lot weirder than “change this one chemical/gene/whatever, and every outward indicator changes in lockstep”. It’s a big messy system with lots of chemicals slotting into lots of receptors and lots of ways for things to diverge. Doubly so in a universe with magic, where there’s a not-insignificant chance elves descend from spirits rather than an evolutionary process. Cole has a difficult time figuring out how clothes work, and there seems to be tons of bald folks in old elven murals (not just Solas). It’s not a far stretch to assume ancient spirits had issues doing hair.

I don’t have a problem with elves in DA not being as muscolar as humans in comparison. The problem with DA2 and DAI (and I think the latter was the worse of the two, because it has a more realistic style then the former) is that they go too far on that route. Elves in some other media are not overly muscolar, without resulting as bad as DA. If we won’t get a custom option for the body, a more common ground should be found, in my opinion, that would still make elves being unique in terms of body compared to humans, without the extreme in the recent games. Same goes for female qunari. They should have a more toned and fit body compared to female humans, given how they are portrayed in concept art (I think on Comics as well, but I’m not sure.)

It’s not a far stretch to assume ancient spirits had issues doing hair. I'm actually an EMT and going through paramedic school at the moment. I have taken a biology course, though anatomy and physiology is where my strengths lie. There are no "receptors" to testosterone that are responsible for hair growth per se. Receptor sites are what reads the chemical signals of hormones, like testosterone. There are actually different testosterone hormones, one of those hormones is called DHT (dihydrotestosterone) which is linked to hair growth and lost. There's no doubt in my mind, given elves are humanoids, they have this type of testosterone like all mammals with hair. But your point about this being a universe with magic and how magic may have affected the evolution process of some races is a great point. We seen a male elf in Origins with a beard before, which is some proof male elves can grow facial hair. I just don't understand why we can't have that option. It doesn't even have to be a full beard, it can be stubble.

Their arm size was just laughable, especially if you're playing a warrior. The two handed weapons were bigger than they were.

I thought that had to do more with genetics? Some men who are overly sensitive to testosterone can actually lead to a reduction in hair, this includes women who take steroids which can lead to male pattern baldness. But I do agree that Elves need a better look to them!

I found my female Lavellan to look uncomfortably skinny and out of proportion, so I hope that they fix up the body models regardless of whom the protagonist is.
I didn't like how skinny my female cadash was either but atleast it looked in proportion, even if it did make her look more like a hobbit then a dwarf.

On the other hand, not into male elves having beards.
