I do think it would be nice if we had body options. Maybe not a full slider but more a few preset options. That way players could choose to be lithe, bulky, and in between.

I'm actually an EMT and going through paramedic school at the moment. I have taken a biology course, though anatomy and physiology is where my strengths lie. There are no "receptors" to testosterone that are responsible for hair growth per se. Receptor sites are what reads the chemical signals of hormones, like testosterone. There are actually different testosterone hormones, one of those hormones is called DHT (dihydrotestosterone) which is linked to hair growth and lost. There's no doubt in my mind, given elves are humanoids, they have this type of testosterone like all mammals with hair. But your point about this being a universe with magic and how magic may have affected the evolution process of some races is a great point. We seen a male elf in Origins with a beard before, which is some proof male elves can grow facial hair. I just don't understand why we can't have that option. It doesn't even have to be a full beard, it can be stubble. Correct me if I'm wrong but I didn't think testosterone had anything to do with beard or body hair growth? I thought that had to do more with genetics? Some men who are overly sensitive to testosterone can actually lead to a reduction in hair, this includes women who take steroids which can lead to male pattern baldness. But I do agree that Elves need a better look to them! Actually, it's both. There is a type of testosterone that does lead to hair growth. Genetics factor in when we talk about how much of a specific hormone someone is able to produce. Yes you are right that some man go bald because of too much testosterone. I don't know the specifics, but what I do know is that there are in fact different testosterone "types" and having too much of one type does cause male pattern baldness. I hope that helps a little... maybe

All of this actually. I wouldn't mind playing an elven male if a basic greatsword didn't dwarf them while simultaneously them looking like they'd break if a tree branch fell on them or god forbid they fall off their horse. Also, facial hair is cool and elven men technically don't grow facial hair... let alone body hair. I don't understand where people get this idea. It's just ridiculous to think elven men can't grow beards. Hair growth is usually associated with testosterone. Given male elves have testicles, they should have beards and body hair. Even female dwarfs have facial hair option for goodness sake, it's just absurd to think male elves can't have facial hair. You really can't boil it down to lore either, because even origins had a male elf with facial hair. Banter between Fenris and Varric in DA:2 say as much, elves can't grow facial hair. At the very least, the vast majority of Elven males in Thedas cannot grow facial hair. As for where they got the overall idea, probably LotR, since that's where the modern imagining of elves originates. Besides, and elf male inquisitor can have 5 o'clock shadow, just not full on scruff. Or maybe we should consider the statement "elves don't grow facial hair" in the same way we consider the statement "people don't have more than 5 digits on each hand/foot". I.e. Maybe the elven beard is about as common as people being born with 6 fingers on each hand.

While I think the elves need a bit of a makeover for DA4, I do appreciate that DA:I is one of the only, if not the only western RPG with character customization where you can actually make a beautiful, pretty boy without downloading several mods. Sometimes I like to be a pretty boy, but rarely am I given the chance to do so in western games which SUUUUUCKS.

One thing I don’t worry about it the CC, in terms of ‘building’ your face. I don’t think they’ll go back from DAI but expand on it. I’m more worried on the hair/beards options and quality, though.

Cirdan the Shipwright, who bore the Great Ring Narya (which he later gave to Gandalf) was said to have a grey beard. This seeming contradiction was later explained by Tolkien as being because Cirdan was in his "third cycle" of his life, where Elves are capable of growing facial hair. What these cycles are and how they're measured Tolkien never elaborated on, but it's basically shorthand for "insanely old".

I always thought he should have explained it away via Cirdan's long posession of Narya. (After all, he passed it along to Gandalf, who also has a truly epic beard.)

I'm not really worried about not being able to make pretty elves in DA4, but I would like them to look less emaciated, but still more alien. But I don't think they are meant to look like anything else except smaller, skinnier humans with long ears. If they are going to build up on DA:I's CC, then I'm sure they'll build up on the hair and beard front too. If I see another undercut, sideshave hairstyle though.. And the beard options need to be so, so much better. Some basic facial hair styles don't even exist, what the hell? Like just a goatee/soulpatch and goatee + mustache. They REALLY dropped the ball on the facial hair front. I'm also going to require a muscle slider.

I'd say there was also a stylistic choice in presenting modern elves as waiflike compared to Solas and the other ancient elves; it could be interpreted as a visual metaphor of how far the elves have fallen since Elvhenan collapsed. To that extent I believe that the same trend (ancient elves buffer and less stick like than our potential elf!PC) should continue in DA:4. Maybe fix the shoulders and arms tho.

To that extent I believe that the same trend (ancient elves buffer and less stick like than our potential elf!PC) should continue in DA:4. Maybe fix the shoulders and arms tho. Well I hope they don't continue with the stick figure body for elves, especially a dalish elf. A person who runs, hike, and hunt for a living wouldn't have a body of of a stick with no muscle definition. These elves are on the move 24/7, it doesn't make any sense. A lot of there original concept art as well showed elves with muscle mass. Not as much as a human, but muscle nonetheless. The game gave us elves with no muscle mass at all. I'd like to imagine my dalish elf inquisitor was a hunter before becoming herold. But I'm definitely going human next game if they keep up this emaciated child look. Origins did well with the elves. I was excited for the elven PC for Inquisition, but it failed.
