Dragon Age 4 is at least 3 years awayventurebeat.com/2018/12/04/dragon-age-4-2021/It’s The Game Awards (for the teaser). You should look during The Game Awards. On Thursday night, EA and BioWare will show off something about Dragon Age at The Game Awards. But what is the studio going to show from the next entry in its fantasy role-playing games? Well, the more interesting question is this: Does it even have anything to show? EA declined to comment on the details of this story.
Dragon Age is still very earlyDragon Age 4 — or whatever name it’ll carry — is at least three years away, according to sources familiar with the studio. That timeline could change, but that is the current expectation at EA. BioWare and EA have not even settled on a name for the new Dragon Age — although that is something they could decide in preparation for a reveal at The Game Awards. And this is not new for Dragon Age. The game has spent more than a year in limbo at EA. In January, I reported that BioWare pushed aside Dragon Age to focus on Anthem. The studio started pre-production on a new Dragon Age, but EA threw out most of that work. At that time, the publisher was shifting its games to live services. That Dragon Age project wasn’t going to fit into that business model. As a result of that reboot, Dragon Age writer Mike Laidlaw — who had an outline prepared for the new game — left BioWare. Following those events, the developer has not put a substantial amount of work into a new Dragon Age. BioWare needs a hit, so the entire studio is putting its efforts into ensuring a successful launch for Anthem. So then why does Dragon Age keep coming up, and why does EA plan to talk about it in some capacity at The Game Award? That’s likely due to the passion that BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah and Hudson have for the series. And they are determined to ensure fans of the series recognize that passion within BioWare as well. [HASH]DAT

I had the game pinned for 2021, so I'm not surprised. It's in their [BioWare] best interest that the game release on next-gen consoles.

Fine by me. If new consoles are on the horizon for 2020, I'd rather they dev for those then try straddling two consoles like last time as it impacted what was in the game.

This article claims Laidlaw was a writer and left as a result of the production reboot.
If memory serves, those reports of a reboot happened a good while after Laidlaw left and he discussed his departure as something a long time coming, including handing off Trespasser decisions to others on the team.
So I’m a bit skeptical this author has their facts together.

Sounds about right.
One thing I am curious about though is the line of EA throwing out their pre production of the game.
Was that ever confirmed as to why Laidlaw left? That seems out of place.

I’m not so much bummed about the release date since I imagined late 2020 or sometime in 2021, but I’m more disappointed that it seems that they have nothing to really talk about. What’s the point of the announcement and teaser then?

Dragon Age 4 — or whatever name it’ll carry — is at least three years away, according to sources familiar with the studio. I fucking knew this live service bullshit was going to kill the franchise. At least three years away my ass. It’ll be four to five years if we’re lucky. And it’ll be a monetized-to-the-tits shitpile when it finally comes out. If this gets confirmed, I’m done. I’m fed up with constant disappointment.

I vaguely remember what I think was a Jason Schreier article mentioning a “reboot” in DA development, though he later walked back that particular word. Then Casey said something about changes made to the design to allow continued storytelling and content additions. Laidlaw said they were personal reasons. He also said he left Trespasser basicalling in the hands of others on the dev team because he was planning to leave, if I’m remembering correctly, so I don’t think this story that he stormed out the door holds up.

This article claims Laidlaw was a writer and left as a result of the production reboot. Yeah, that part stood out to me as well...the fact they listed Laidlaw as a writer when he the Director and guys like Gaider and Weakes were the writers. Makes me wonder how much else was fact-checked when takes all of a couple of seconds to confirm.

I would have guessed two years.
But yeah, given Anthem is the new favorite, I could see them shoving Dragon Age aside for the shooter market.

I had expected about 2022. Date of full production start - which hasn't happened yet, as far as I know - plus about three years of development plus the usual delays.

Following those events, the developer has not put a substantial amount of work into a new Dragon Age. BioWare needs a hit, so the entire studio is putting its efforts into ensuring a successful launch for Anthem. Sorry but i am still not interested in buying Anthem. I don´t care for this game. I care for DA 4. Its crazy that such financially successful game like DAI has so much problems to get a sequel. But maybe the planned DA 4 was too similar to Mass Effect Andromeda so EA axe it.

I'm sure if the timeline was way off-base (and I'm pretty sure it isn't), we'll hear from BW about it. Especially since it's being picked up by all the major gaming new sites.

Like with during production of "Dragon Age Inquisition"...oh and "Mass Effect Andromeda"...they've basically come out and said this is their M.O. as they get near release. Not sure how this is much of a revelation...

Like I just said on ResetEra, I'm happy we're about to finally reach a point in which folks can stop worrying that DA4 is never coming. That, to me, feels like a victory.
2021 (or even '22) is a long ways away. I'll be 34. I was 27 when Inquisition came out. Life is short, and I wish I had more time. But now I've got one more thing to look forward to once I hit my mid-thirties. I'm OK with this.

I think 7-8 years between entries is too long, especially with an unresolved story. If they had wrapped up a trilogy like ME I wouldn't necessarily care but it seems weird to take that large of a break mid-story. By then, how many people playing DA4 will even have played DAI let alone DAO or DA2?
So I guess I'm hoping some of this story is wrong. Obviously it is good that DA4 is coming at all, but we've pretty much known that for years anyway.

as a personal preference, i tend not to trust articles that treat assumptions as facts. this is not the first time i see someone claim to have "sources", anyone can do that. and this sort of journalism is the sort that loses all credibility to me. sure, it might end up to be the case, it also might end up being NOT the case. i'm not going to assume anything untill i hear from an official and trsuted source.

Remember, pretty much all of BioWare had to knuckle down to get Andromeda out the door after it floundered in development. That means time taken off Anthem’s production which means more time before more of the team can put more focus on Dragon Age. That being said, these articles are basically cobbled together rumors as far as I can tell.
