Too many posts I want to comment, can't keep track of them all . Favorite Romance: Damn good question. Alistair was also my first intro to romancing in a game, so his awkward charm was so endearing. I actually grew to love the Solamance, because it was so unexpected. This is also why I don't want to do it again, let my Solavellan be the only one and the rest (hopefully) get to live happily ever after. I nearly forgot that it doesn't have to be DA only. I think that Garrus is by far my favorite BW romance. It was so mature and natural. As someone else has already mentioned, they where friends first and then came the love, sneaking in. The mutual admiration, but without the pedestal. To me, they are equals and see each other as such. (Though I admit that a romanced Shepard will always miss the shot, because she knows how much it means to him to be the best . I also headcanon a conversation way later where she tells the truth and he confesses that of course he knew). Also, I love the conversation on the last mission. I love the idea that they actually talk about having children, even if mostly jokingly. Especially that they are talking about it without the typical "I'm the female, so of course I'll drop everything and become a stay at home mom". I often feel like this is implied in most media. About relating to romances in the game: I feel the same way, except for friendship, not romance. I have a hard time getting/keeping friends, so having people (even fictional) talking about how I have helped them and they consider me their friend was an amazing boost to my usually low self-esteem. Blackwall calling female Inquisitors "mylady" For me it's all fine. I admit to liking the trope, but in DAI in particular, it's also a matter of accepting the Inquisitor for who she is. Mostly because I've only romanced him as a qunari and it was either her or a dwarf, I see it as him showing that he sees her as a woman and not a qunari/non-human . Fenris: I kinda felt like he should have been the one to do the pushing against the wall. He's spent his life as a dominated slave, I feel like this was his moment to take charge. I always end up feeling like he just settles into a role he's used to, rather than it being two consenting adults. I LOVE his romance, but this particular scene makes me a bit uncomfortable . I kinda hope we do not meet him in DA4, 'cause I cannot take listening to him being devastated because Hawke got left in Fade in the same World State . Side note: Not romance related, but I LOVE that in Trespasser, Sera comments on how she's glad that Solas is gone, but also how she is sad on my Solavellan's behalf. Considering how she was pretty unfriendly whenever they talked about anything to do with Elves/Solas, it was nice to see her support her friend and accept that they have different beliefs even if she doesn't agree. Also, I never imagined my Solavellan spending 2 years pining. Rather I imagined her doing her job and maybe occasionally pondering what happened for him to just leave. I imagine that she, like him, never expected to fall in love and therefore she just continues being single, not because she is waiting for him, but because she's just not interested. Not to mention, I like the fact the he's the one who fade-stalks her because he still likes her.

TabithaTH I agree on the Fenris romance I personally head canon that he insists on being on top (and my personal Hawke being the timid and kindhearted person she is, will always let him do so ) also part of my head canon, that while he still says that he hates/fears mages he makes an exception for a Mage Hawke and their mage companions (though the animosity between him and Anders remains)
my first DA2 romance was a halfhearted Sebastian romance, Fenris only grew on me during my second playthrough and though I've since tried out every romance there is in that game, I personally still find his romance to be the best the fact that you can actually teach him to be more then he feels himself to be (teaching him how to read), to me that just shows how much they care for one another plus I love that little party banter during MotA - Fenris: You frightened me.
- Hawke: Me?
- Fenris: Before we found you, there was a moment when I...
- Fenris: Don't do that again.
(that small pause before the last line (I always reload if I don't get that dialogue to make sure I get this banter )

I find it kinda odd that people want to make Fenris Dominant in his romantic relationships just because he used to be abused by people. It twinges that feeling where people shame men for being submissive if that is there true preference lies. It twinges that feeling that submissive people are the most likely to be victimized and/or are a victim. Additionally that Aggression/topping = Dominant. I actually participate in Dominance and Submission as a daily part of my relationships and I like being on top AND being on the bottom. Because it's a physical position not a personality to me. I see trust in my partner's submission and I feel awe that he can give of himself. I feel motivated to be the sort of person who deserves that trust.
On it's face, the Fenris/Hawke relationship is egalitarian, I remember being pushed against a wall and then pushing him back.

Yeah, no bones (lol pun) about Fenris in particular, but top does not automatically equal dominant and bottom does not automatically equal submissive, and even in cases where the character is both it doesn't make them less of a man or less of a woman. On my most recent DAO run I romanced Zevran as a female Tabris and she was definitely his dom regardless of the many, many, maaany physical configurations they found themselves in lol. But they still fundamentally had an equal voice in the relationship. That said, people are free to headcanon as they wish. I know I do.

Like no one complains about Peebee-and she makes Anders look like the most prudish of nuns to live on the planet. "who would push her off?" And the animators chose to force you to lay there passively with your hands on her upper thighs instead of knocking her off immediately or at least keeping your hands off of her while she smirks at you like a crazy lady. Gosh, I hated that scene so much.

Speaking of flirting, one thing I would like BioWare to copy from MEA for the next Dragon Age if having different options for the flirts. DAI kind of did this where the flirts matched the tone of the romance but I really liked how some of the flirts in MEA let you have different kinds for the same flirt. It would be great for role playing since our character could use things from sweet and innocent to spicy and devious and everything in between. It’d also be great to see the LI’s reactions to the different types. I would love this, and it's something I hope that they will implement some day. They could have a little heart icon to indicate a flirt option that is more of a compliment, or a shy flirt, or an awkward flirt (I think you are cute, etc). A big heart icon could indicate a flirt option that is more direct : (We'll bang, okay? (TM)) Maybe different colored hearts for different flirt flavors, like pink for shy, red for straightforward, maybe even the occasional burgundy for something more avid. I don't know, maybe not that complicated, but I've been thinking about this a lot lately because my longtime wish for a more romantically shy protagonist is pretty enduring.

That said, people are free to headcanon as they wish. I know I do. Ah, nah, I get what you're saying. Wasn't trying to say their head canon was wrong. So long as they don't insist that Fenris is absolutely a Dominant that would make Hawke submit 100% of the time. AS a Femdom myself, I default to egalitarian in all the romances in DA but two. 1. Alistair is obviously a female-led kinda guy (not commenting about bedroom stuff, just relationship stuff). He gives up power to the newest recruit, a Cousland he marries is obviously doing all the political savvy maneuvering, and same for if he married Anora. Maybe he takes charge in the bedroom, maybe it's even in there, I get no vibe from either way on that front. 2. my personal head canon of Fenris is that submitting to my Hawke would be a bit of therapeutic catharsis- his habit is to give of himself. But instead of just taking like a slave owner would, I appreciate him and feed/give back to him what he needs. A symbiotic relationship. I envision him as a body guard, always watching, and his absolute adoration and habits going into a Super want to take care of you route. But everyone else has been egalitarian for me. ^^

Firstly, I am not saying that position matters, Heck, I'm not even talking about position in that way. People do what they want as long as they feel comfortable with it. Also, it's only with Fenris in particular I feel like this. For me it's a matter of how I relate to his position (not as in sexual position, but rather psychological). I have had a tendency to be too submissive to the point where I have done things that I was extremely uncomfortable with (not necessarily, but also, romantically), just to get people to like me. Trust me, it is not a healthy place to be. It's like the story with the Fog Warriors, he killed them because he was used to doing what someone else dictated. Most likely it has something to do with animation restrictions and is purely coincidental, but he doesn't really kiss Hawke, his face is turned to the side in a way that makes me feel like he's uncertain of the situation. I wanna stress, that it's a matter of actually liking the character. If I didn't like him, I wouldn't care about his fictional feelings. I just don't want to feel like I'm forcing him to do something because he falls back on old habits. Even if it's not the intention of the devs, it makes me, the player, feel like I'm taking advantage of a character that I genuinely like and want to be happy. Maybe it's just because I never really liked my Hawke, so I don't feel like I control her intentions. I have this vague idea that a male Hawke is easier for me, since I don't have to compare him with myself as I usually do with my canon PC's . I hope it makes sense. Again, I am not dissing anyone for their preferred position. It's just that, while I don't mind rp'ing a jerk knowingly, I just don't like feeling like one irl.

So...I should probably explain a few things before people get a wrong idea I have hundreds of pieces of head canon, most of which switch and change hundreds of times as well heck, I have trouble even settling on a character to play most of the time (which probably says something about me as a person ) I've...also never had an actual relationship irl...not a romantic one anyway (due to various reasons...I find trusting people...a bit hard) games make me feel comfortable to explore such things safely, and due to my inexperience I tend to have various idealistic (and some not so idealistic) views about relationships -- speaking of fictional character feelings...I had a wonder (please don't feel attacked for those who like to play this way) but why is it alright for someone to change the sexual orientation of a fictional character to have them suit someone's needs, while it's frowned upon in real life? While I'm all for people having their ideal romance with a certain character, if a character is established as gay or hetero...is it okay to change them to bi-sexual just 'because I want to romance them''? ...typing this makes me realize I'm about to kick a hornet's nest in that regard...please forgive me

At the end of the day, it's a video game. I don't blink an eye at Alistair and Solas Bi mods. I find it a little weird to hear about Dorian Bi mods because his whole storyline is about his gayness so I think that's a LOT of head cannon and content to ignore to manage it but I guess it you can compartmentalize nearly everything about him, go for it. So long as you have a healthy understand that that shit can't happen in real life, I'm cool with ya ^^

I don't have any investment in changing a character's sexuality, but comparing bi mods or suggestions to make characters bi to real world conversion therapy is obtuse to the point of being insulting. These are not real people. Their sexuality is made up by a real person and changing it is just playing make believe another way. I don't really think it's a great narrative technique to change someone like Dorian or Cassandra in the canon, given it creates an inconsistency in the story telling. I don't really care if characters like Anders or Kaidan that were assumed straight are "changed" to give people more options. Comparing it to forcing a real person to change their sexuality is ridiculous. Everything about them is made up to create the best narrative for an audience. That's the point, they're imaginary, created for our entertainment.

I'm personally not someone who plays with Bi mods...if a character is Bi by default (for example the ones of DA2 (except Sebastian) then they are Bi even if I establish my own characters as hetero if they are hetero but of a different gender then my own character (Morrigan for example) then I create a character of the opposite gender to experience their romance I try to experience all of the romances at some point or another (even though I've only so far romanced Cullen in Inquisition ) and thereby also creating various characters to fully enjoy them maybe I'm just to much of a girl who plays 'the way the writers intended it' *shrugs* (at least as far as romances go)

Only one that's static is my DAI character xD You kicked the hornets nest, but I'm completely in the 'no it's not ok, ever, no matter what excuses people want to pull as for the reason' camp, sadly Bioware proved they think it is okay, so that's that debate over and done with *shrugs*. If they pull it again I'll never buy another Bioware game. I can't support that message, I'm tentative with MEA because it .. it was very messy, and incredibly unpolished when it was released and even though they changed the character after release (pre-release does not count as it's still being developed, whereas on release and after it should be final), it could have evolved that way in development if they'd been given another year to polish the game and fix a ton of the writing issues, seeing as the development had so many disasters. Though that still falls in my "no excuses" frame of mind anyway. Put more simply: do better next time, team + EA. Or rather, do not do that again...

I've never used a bi mod, but I also haven't run into the issue of wanting to romance a character I couldn't, being a person who has played female elves and female humans the three games so far. Why would I need to make Dorian bi when I got Cullen? In the case of Morrigan, I value far more from her being my Sister-friend than I ever would as her lover.
The bi mods I've seen people use are to make Alistair, Solas, Blackwall, or Cullen bi because they were gay men and had few options. I don't suffer their lack of variety so I get why they'd resort to it.
