I think if they just renamed the trailer to '' Meet Your Companions '' or something, it probably would've gone over better. Now it reads as THE trailer for the game itself, when it's... not really that? Technically true. But let's be real. What we saw on Dragon Age social media yesterday is not organic. No matter what they did, it was going to lead to massive negative reception because it's BioWare. I have never seen anything like it. It's been a decade. No way this is real. Someone joked about it before but it's kinda true, in that BioWare as a company might be straight up doomed in the PR department because it has such an overwhelming negative perception from people who hate "woke" shit. If I want to be cynical, the only one to diminish that is to straight up "appease" that base, by giving us busty sexy female characters and hardass white male manly man fighters. Do we really wanna do that though?

I will grant that this might have not been the best thing to lead the marketing push with, as far as communicating the stakes and tone of the story. Companions are a huge part of what makes games like this enjoyable to a lot of people, which is why they wanted to showcase them, but since it’s the first big trailer of this marketing push a lot of people are taking it as a statement of intent as to the tone, stakes, and look of the whole game. No, yeah, I agree that tonally it was jarring in terms of what many may have been expecting in terms of continuity of the other trailers and tone. But. BUT. A lot of the other trailers have already done some heavy lifting to set the tone and stakes. Heavy blah blah blah fate of the world blah blah etc. So in some respects this is some levity in what has otherwise been a very serious series of trailers. Things can't be all heavy all of the time. BioWare games have always had humor in their stories even when dealing with really heavy subject matter, so it's not a dramatic departure imo. I'm confident the game is gonna be dark af.. The Horrors of Hormak live rent free in my head. You know that, and I know that, people that have been closely following the game for years know that, but the average member of the general audience or even RPG fans generally has never read Tevinter Nights and has probably forgotten those trailers. So absent other context this trailer comes across as very light and low stakes.

Perhaps a cheeky companion reveal was not the best idea, but BioWare games have always been companions first and plot second. The main story has just been a common purpose. I'd argue Mass Effect does that too, tho even I think ME has the better main plot. DAI, the game that focused on plot more than companions, is arguably the weakest entry in the series.

Do we really wanna do that though? While I do get your point, I think a good portion of the criticism is due the direction and tone of the trailer. The way the characters have been introduced in it would fit well in a hero shooter game, and the name change also threw people off (I'd say the majority of people don't keep up with every news online). I do think the marketing team didn't make things easier for the team by showcasing this trailer at this time. It'd have been a bit different, I think, if they shown this trailer after the gameplay showcase and/or another trailer. I did read many people changing their minds or being more hopefully by looking at the GI shots and especially the screenshots posted on twitter, after all.

The environment has definitely become more vocally toxic towards diversity and inclusiveness since DAI came out. And that plays a big part in whether DAV would be well received by the internet culture. However, this trailer did probably confuse RPG fans in looking off-genre, and I think that reflects EA not understanding the RPG playerbase.

To be clear I'm not diminishing people's opinions if they are in good faith. Even I have my reservations. I will say that I expected people who are very familiar with Bioware to show a bit more benefit of the doubt given that we know how trailers do not correlate to their Dragon Age games at all. The marketing after all is definitely not directed at them.

If you took a shot every time purple magic appeared in a trailer during that showcase you might have died.

Bio is supposed to do what's best for Bio. The studio said it supports the rainbow coloured flag. However, the Lord and Master is EA and sooner or later Bio must appease the boss = make money = the investors.
Survival of the studio = success. If changes need to be made, am of the opinion that, woke or not, a course correction may become necessary. Imo, at this point it's unnecessary but Bio needs to be aware of public sentiments. Of course, as long as Bio = successful, the studio won't give a rats ass about public sentiment.

Dragon Age @dragonageEven a broken world can be beautiful - welcome to Minrathous. Enjoy this sneak peek at an in-game environment you'll see much more of in the #DragonAge: The Veilguard Gameplay Reveal on June 11! Join the YouTube Premiere chat tomorrow where we'll be sharing a few special surprises ahead of the trailer! gotta admit, the trailer did made me a little bit sad, but seeing these screenshots and reading the informations coming from people who played the game... what a relief! actually hyped again, I would say but looking at this specific image, we see Varric with Rook, Harding and Neve. So, maybe he is one of those "temporary companions" the leak mentioned? Could be that we are getting one temporary companion in each Main Quest? That would open the possibility to see returning characters relevant to the places of the quests, like Dorian in Tevinter and Isabella in Rivain, for example (talking about Isabela, we saw someone really similar to her in one of those concept arts from years ago, and considering that some companions did appear in some of those concept arts, maybe it really was her? )

If someone believes the success or failure of this title has anything to do with how "woke" it is, or even the franchise; I'd say you're a half-wit.

However, this trailer did probably confuse RPG fans in looking off-genre, and I think that reflects EA not understanding the RPG playerbase.
My problem with the trailer is that, subconsciously, I held on to a certain visual expectation. Varric in the trailer, for example, was a total visual surprise. Loose hair and sporting a beard plus that art style threw me off. It's just not him! Yet, I did expect a change but not in that fashion.
Most cinematics are not designed to show in-game animation and art style and faces come to think about it. The newbies seeing this trailer probable accept it as is with no bias. It's the old guard that has the problem. Bio is going after the newbies. That's the bigger demographic and the smart thing to do.
June 11th game demo reveal will cement our reaction... positive or negative.

I really think appeasing the "too much woman! And too much gay! Not enough white man muscle!" crowd is really not the way to go. That crowd is loud online. They take their cues from fascist social media influencers and political leaders like Orange Fatler in the United States.
But I am of the opinion that there is still a sizeable silent majority who dislike ostentatious displays of masculinity and the braying of bigoted jackasses who are not loud on social media and will quietly buy the games and media that reflect their more diverse realities. I really do believe that.
Right now the cultural warriors would have you believe that "woke Doctor Who" is failing in the rating because the new Doctor is black and very obviously queer. However ratings for the new show when including streaming and online numbers show about 4 million viewers an episode which is where the show, historically, has been so there's what right-wing culture warriors say online and what reality actually is. And before anyone says anything I am just as critical of the far-left in real life. Extremists tend to obscure their realities because it's the only way they can live within them.
BioWare, Disney etc should stick to their guns. You don't win against the intolerant by giving into them. You kick them harder in the nuts.

No, very obviously much will depend on whether the game is good or not which is why shedding our undies in a tizzy over one overly stylized trailer is probably premature. We have not really seen this game in action. If it sucks when being played yeah it will bomb and deservedly so. That's the nature of the thing.

Of course the trailer was divisive for many reasons and I didn't particularly think it was a good lead off trailer myself.

I haven't seen the "too woke" shouting that much on this forum. It was mostly "omg that art style and that overall tone". It's technically impossible for Dragon Age to be "too woke" anyway since it's BioWare's IP and not set on Earth so they decide what's going on.
In the very end, the same is true for BioWare, Disney and everyone else, "cultural war" or not: they make a product, and people decide whether it's worth their time and money.

It reminds me a bit of Andromeda, because it also to Goofy to be my Taste. I´m more into the Dark Fantasy Dragon Age and there is nothing Dark left in Drafon Age

If BioWare's goal was to get me excited for the companions, then they succeeded! I find most of them interesting. Harding is a welcoming sight, and I have already planned to marry Davrin. We are going to adopt five baby griffons and perhaps two barkspawns... ok I should not get too hyped.
We will find soon enough about the art style and the tone when the gameplay drops. My hunch says that this trailer was probably influenced EA marketing department in an attempt to appeal to broader audience.

You're right, there was no winning this no matter what, but I'm moreso talking about people who actually still fans of Dragon Age (and not just the '' non-woke '' DAO). Like I keep saying, people were just looking for an excuse to dump on Bioware. Maybe the direction the trailer went wasn't the best option but I had a feeling prior to the reveal that Dragon Age was going to be put under an Electron Microscope given BG3 was released a few months ago.

Look outstide of the forum, It's everywhere. The ones that go too far in the "woke wars" here are usually taken care of by the mods.
