I re-watched the trailer and I'm convinced I'm not the target audience. Sure, we shouldn't judge the whole game based on a trailer, but I'm not surprised by the less-than-enthusiastic reactions. It's just so different from what many of us came to expect from and appreciate about the DA franchise. And it's never good when devs have to assure the audience that the actual game feels different from the trailer. Still, it's great that the gameplay reveal is tomorrow - I hope the ambivalent first impressions will be dispelled either way (and I do want to be enchanted by DAVe!) Was Origins like its trailers? Was DA 2? Was even Inquisition? I'd say Inquisition was the closest but even then 'I am hunted for the power I wield' didn't exactly come out in things and stuff from Sacred Ashes or the DA 2 cinematic trailer also really didn't match...not to mention all the heavy rock/ metal stuff from Origins as well. But that's besides the point: it's not the question of how the previous installments compared with their trailers in terms of their content but the overall aesthetics, which kept to, to a larger or lesser extent, dark fantasy convention. My first impression when watching this one was "Fortnitesque" (as cliche it sounds) - and I don't even play Fortnite. Again, I'm giving Bioware benefit of the doubt.

It can be indicitive, and informative, to point out trends though. Which the tone from the first DAO trailers were lot of heavy metal and rock, stuff I normally associate with angsty teens so I would've assumed Origins to be super edgy and 'mature'. Instead we got a pretty deep and thoughtful game that actually took a look at real life politics and what not.

The trailer's biggest crime was making me feel like a boomer - it's true. That was one of my gripes about Andromeda is that the squad was very teeny. We're not getting any younger tho

Next bit wonder if they have posted or anyone will drop desktop wallpaper stuff for some of the stuff. The one at the very end of the trailer and the bit with the Dragon unfurling its wings could both make good desktop bait.

Honestly I find it a bit puzzling how many reactions I’ve seen from people that seem to think a more saturated color palette in this one trailer means all “dark fantasy” elements have been abandoned and all dialogue will be an endless stream of Marvel quips. The environments and outfits all seem to be in keeping with the art style from Inquisition by my judgement, if a bit fancier and more magical in places. What I learned in the last 24 hours is that some people seems to only like DA because of heavy metal in trailers, optional gore and the brown/grey color palette.
I think the complains tells me more about those people then the trailer, but I'm still puzzled about the "marvel quips" one since the only dialogue in the trailer is a recruit listing exchange done between Varric and Harding à la Ocean's movie style.

I will grant that this might have not been the best thing to lead the marketing push with, as far as communicating the stakes and tone of the story.
Companions are a huge part of what makes games like this enjoyable to a lot of people, which is why they wanted to showcase them, but since it’s the first big trailer of this marketing push a lot of people are taking it as a statement of intent as to the tone, stakes, and look of the whole game.

As a gen xer, I'm more down with gen z's stylistic sensibilities than my own generation's. It was appealing to gen x/xennials that brought us that dumb "The new shit" trailer and all those desaturated, brown filtered games.

It was appealing to gen x/xennials that brought us that dumb "The new shit" trailer and all those desaturated, brown filtered games. It was? I must be off base with my generation then cause I thought the whole vibe of the trailer was a mis-step for a first trailer for a game I suspect is going to be a lot more serious and darker in tone than what'd you'd be led to believe here. I am fine being wrong. I want a hit and a good game at the end of the day. I warmed to the trailer the more I watched it but I was more impressed by the in-game images they started to release last night. That looked more like my game.

Right! Exactly. They should have led with a story reveal trailer and followed up later with this companion trailer. Yesterdays trailer would have been received better if it were trailer number 3.

I'm just speaking in generalities about aesthetics of today's entertainment and the hate it gets from my peers. I agree this particular trailer was a misstep to start off with given the current state of gamer politics, even though I get the intention.

No, yeah, I agree that tonally it was jarring in terms of what many may have been expecting in terms of continuity of the other trailers and tone. But. BUT. A lot of the other trailers have already done some heavy lifting to set the tone and stakes. Heavy blah blah blah fate of the world blah blah etc. So in some respects this is some levity in what has otherwise been a very serious series of trailers. Things can't be all heavy all of the time. BioWare games have always had humor in their stories even when dealing with really heavy subject matter, so it's not a dramatic departure imo. I'm confident the game is gonna be dark af.. The Horrors of Hormak live rent free in my head.

Steam description of the trailer has this line: Be who you want to be and play how you want to play as you fight to stop the gods from blighting the world.
Thanks Solas! You probably should have done like me and read all the codex entries, it was hinted there that your old pals were all blighted.

I just realized; we started the series with a title (the Warden), we followed it with a bird (Hawke), we went back to a title (Inquisitor), and now we have a bird again (Rook).
Hah, I see your pattern Bioware! I'm putting bets down that in DA6 we will play as an Antivan assassin simply known as Crow.

You probably should have done like me and read all the codex entries, it was hinted there that your old pals were all blighted. There's good chances that we'll end up fighting one of the remaining Old Gods. The original concept art for the game also lead to think he'd try to free them, alongside his dialogues in Inquisition.

Obviously a super generic line but seems to suggest a fair amount of player agency and Gary McKay also did stress player agency as a focus in the IGN article the other day. Will be interesting to see if there are more roleplaying options than previous games, or at least DAI.

I think if they just renamed the trailer to '' Meet Your Companions '' or something, it probably would've gone over better. Now it reads as THE trailer for the game itself, when it's... not really that?

Sass appreciated, not what I meant.
What did you mean then? He was away from Bioware from 2020-2023. So he know The veilguard for more then a year.
What I meant is, whether he understands what made Origins such a hit among people.
