Correct me if I'm wrong, but DA games tend to have several trailers, right? I'm just remembering DAO's Sacred Ashes trailer and how it turned out to have nothing in common with the game look-wise.

I re-watched the trailer and I'm convinced I'm not the target audience. Sure, we shouldn't judge the whole game based on a trailer, but I'm not surprised by the less-than-enthusiastic reactions. It's just so different from what many of us came to expect from and appreciate about the DA franchise. And it's never good when devs have to assure the audience that the actual game feels different from the trailer. Still, it's great that the gameplay reveal is tomorrow - I hope the ambivalent first impressions will be dispelled either way (and I do want to be enchanted by DAVe!) Was Origins like its trailers? Was DA 2? Was even Inquisition? I'd say Inquisition was the closest but even then 'I am hunted for the power I wield' didn't exactly come out in things and stuff from Sacred Ashes or the DA 2 cinematic trailer also really didn't match...not to mention all the heavy rock/ metal stuff from Origins as well.

So, I've heard people say that Fable was more like Dragon Age than Dragon Age was. I finally got to watch the Fable trailer and I'm just like, really? Ok, the art style is more realistic but the tone of that trailer is basically The Office in fantasy land, it even has a whimsical soundtrack with flutes and whistles. There is definitely a more happy, cheery, low stakes feeling from the Veilguard trailer but the Fable one is the same.

To be clear, I think the bits in the tavern are consistent with Dragon Age: it's just that they perhaps focused only on that side of the games for the trailer, alongside the overall tone, music and direction. Which might've overshadowed the serious elements you highlighted before, or even what happens to Bellara. It's no like it was taken in by a cuddly creature. In regards of the tone and style and the bright colors, I'd point out the screenshots offer a different perspective, with a mixture of the two. I guess I am finally going to get to make this comparison. But yeah this trailer was quite packed because pretty sure...hmm let me check. Yeah the stand together trailer clocks in and 1:35 total. This trailer was 2:08 and included over two times as many companions. They had a lot to show in a veyr short amount of time and maybe that was a mistake...but really don't think so. Lots of blink and you'll miss it moments. So this trailer was a trailer version of the Rise of Skywalker. WHich I liked that movie too on first reaction...but same thing. Busy movie. Lots going on. So further rewatches, like with the trailer, gave me the time to process what was actually on the screen and see a lot of it. And yeah, weird choices were made in it but don't see the cause for alarm nor do I see it as some massive tonal break from previous games...or itself. The trailer themself isn't bad. But it is bad marketing on an xbox showcase. you want people who don't know DA to develop an interest. The best way to do that is with emotion. This trailer only get emotion for people who know the companions or DA lore. Gamer wich aren't fans will watch this only once at the showcase. So only one chance to impress them.
Maybe i can show you what they mean with tonal break:
The second looks cartoonisch not animated. More like this, but not 100%:

It is an in-engine trailer, so I don’t expect it to be completely dissimilar, but one still shouldn’t read too much into the specific designs. Already the released screenshots seem to have toned down the saturation a bit. And this trailer was very specifically about introducing us to “the cast you’ll build connections with and adventure with!” Not a tonal touchstone for the story and world as a whole.
…Honestly I think maybe choosing bright purple as the key marketing color may have been a mistake, as it seems to contribute to these impressions.

As I said before, I think the game will not be that different from the other games in the franchise, mixing up dark and horror elements with brighter ones, likewise in terms of tone.

The purple imagery gave me an immediate "mobile game" association in my head from the moment they unveiled the Dreadwolf logo 2 years ago. Couldn't even tell you what game but it is a strong association in my head and I think it is that way for others as well.

Not always the biggest fan of skeletal imagery in general and the horror elements in general can be hit or miss with me. Like I am fine with a serious game in tone and for the most part I don't think DA has ever gone too far into the horror vein for me, more or less, weirdly enough...but the potential is certainly there for them to do. Like some of the stuff described in TVN it could work, but it might also very much NOT work.

There is definitely a more happy, cheery, low stakes feeling from the Veilguard trailer but the Fable one is the same. I think the more realistic is the important word. Because they fear that they cann't take the game serious in the choices, when they get a more unrealistic art styl. That is what i get out of it.

Alpha leak had very Destiny style UI and it just looked bad.
We'll learn how much of that stayed or drastically changed since very soon.

Okay everyone, let's say everyone is romanceable, no exceptions. Who's your pick? Mine is Neve. After a break of the art work and a few pictures i would say Bellara.
I'll wait until the Tuesday game demo is over.

I will not be able to read the last 20 or so pages, sadly, but I am sure that there are people who are upset about the art stylization in the trailer. All I have to say is, you need to look closely at the environments, the clothing, and the high level of graphical fidelity. They made an artistic choice for the trailer, but that's not representative of the game. This game is gonna be gorgeous. Really, truly gorgeous. DAI 2.0 but with much better graphics.
I can't wait to play it.
I am absolutely living for the fact that multiple companions have visible prostheses, and this is vitally important to me as someone with multiple disabilities. Drack from MEA is important to me for the same reason.
I hope we get a night/day cycle like hinted.
I wonder if we are going to have wings as the Rook.
THE EVANURIS.
I must return to toiling the fields so that our harvest may be plentiful, but I'm amazed that we're here, and I am very much looking forward to the gameplay trailer because I think it's gonna knock our socks off.

One's impression, I guess. How it's dark and gritty when he didn't see the whole 15 mins is interesting. Maybe the demo starts in Weisshaupt Fortress. The pre-Alpha leak video is dark and gritty.

The more I think about it, the first video feels more of "hey we gotta do a current style trailer for younger people to get them interested". BioWare has also, like, ALWAYS done current pop culture references in their trailers? Are we forgetting the 30 Seconds to Mars trailer? The goddamn Lindsey Stirling DAI trailer? lmao At best these choices are cringe in hindsight and at worst truly baffling, but they still make them because that's Just What They Do. I actually thought MEA was kind of an outlier in some respects because its trailers went so hard, especially the NASA one, and their 'goofiest' trailer was was the Ghost Riders In The Sky trailer which honestly was such a bop and it really set the tone for the game having a Western genre (alas, alas, but--)

There is a second in-game image on their Twitter which looks more promising. If that's what It looks like in-game then it's closer to DAI 2.0 then what we saw yesterday. I think the trailer yesterday is a bit of a head-scratcher since it's now fair to say that it doesn't seem to represent the in-game look very well.

The trailer's biggest crime was making me feel like a boomer - it's true. That was one of my gripes about Andromeda is that the squad was very teeny. As a Gen X person I don't want all of my companions to be variations of what's cool for Gen Z. Thankfully I didn't see a 2024 mullet in the trailer yesterday. I don't mind Bellara being a kid as it looks like Lucanis and Errimond (?) are going to be a little older and Harding of course is 50ish.

You have to look closely in the trailer, too, there are flashes of what it will look like. Really gorgeous flashes. Yeah the bits with the Halla. I caught that. It looked really good.
