I could see them incorporating some active mage spells into basic combat commands. Like, Energy Barrage are added into heavy staff attacks or just critical staff attacks. Fade Step could be included in dodge/movement command, like the shadow dodge in rogue Rook shown in the gameplay. Even Mind Blast could be an upgrade path for parrying/blocking. For balance purposes, there could be internal cooldowns on these special moves, so virtually these would function like active abilities.
melee attacks require strength... something mages are poor at. Or, has Bio revamped that Mage Class to something I no longer understand?
Again, it's possible that the special abilities the rogue shown in the game aren't translated to melee attacks for mages, but in spells.

Solo play does not appear to be an option..... unless that difficulty level is set to uber low or we use the "No Die" option.
I just wish Bio is forthcoming abut this. What's the problem?

Hm.... I did not see Neve wielding a staff, from the official gameplay demo. Then again, the transition from cinematic to real gameplay is flawless.
Bellara is a mage with a bow! 3 of the companions have custom weapon(s): Bellara, Neve and Taash. Lucanis rapier + dagger might count too, since rogue official description is dual swords. No point trying to guess player character abilities from them. Even their skill tree is in a big part custom.

Granted. However if we find out during the battle that the opponent is immune to the pre-mission spell selections .... what then? This is why I like DAO and DA2.

To be clear, I'm not talking about active talents, but the special moves the rogues make in combat aside of the ability he could use with a cooldown. In regards of the selection, that's definitely something concerning, if we have no ways to change the slot abilities in a map.

not necessarily. A rogue have 2 dagger and most likely don't need strength. Maybe the staff work different. My guess Mana.

I am not sure what you mean. It is Neve's staff. You may not call it a staff, because it looks like a swort. But she use it as staff. The same goes for Bellaras bracelet. So i guess we get something like that as well.

The way it sounds from this discussion is that they designed combat around warriors and rogues, and gutted mages (only 3 spells that are secondary to attacking with a weapon). I wish I had asked the question about the number of spells mages can use in combat at the Q&A, so that I could know if it really is only 3 spells for mages. There were questions about mage combat submitted to the #askbioware channel of the discord that I saw, just none of them were really asked during the Q&A. It looks like they're avoiding going into specifics of any class and talking only generally, they gave a few examples, but it's still just broad strokes. They will eventually show off more in depth gameplay, at higher levels, with companion usage, for different classes, so we're going to get a better idea of what it all looks like at some point before launch.

It's a wand or scepter, shorter magic thingy with a glowing rock, used as a focus for magic. Honestly, I'd be surprised if some fashion designer turned weaponsmith from Tevinter didn't look at the south's usage of massive sticks tied to people backs and called everyone there primitives. Fashion can be applied to weapons, as well. Bellara's bow could also change itself to look like different weapons, it already can turn into an arm cover, what's to stop it from turning into a staff, as well? The only other mage in the party is going to be Rook and we don't really know anything about what their weapons are going to be. Since crafting is back and there's also a transmog system, you could make your staff look like anything.

Looking at the Meteor Icon on this shot, it looks like it has been upgraded in some way. I wonder if it generates a larger than normal effect or if it's a chain of three different effects (it looks like it's been upgraded twice)? Bottom-Right: Our "Ultimate"?

But the raven ability looks cool. Maybe crow special faction ability?

I wouldn't be surprised if that was a skill that got folded into the action combat for Veilguard, like the examples of rogue skills that were shown in the gameplay reveal. I can see Energy Barrage as the staff heavy attack.
Give it to meeeeeee

The bottom bar is like your Stamina Bar (Momentum) - all 3 abilities draw from it, not just the Meteor Ability. Meteor looks like it's been upgraded and thus draws more Momentum. But the Crow Icon does raise a good point - Do Factions have their own Ability Trees?

Yeah, it's uncanny how all the characters have some sort of magic/mystic ability at their disposal. I'm not sure what's this about Taash's "fire," but if all of the companions have magic, I wonder whether they will be granted it through some plot shenanigans.
