This is how Corinne Busche answered someone's concern over mages in the game on social media. corinne_at_last 8h8 hours ago Much of what would have been abilities or “spells” in the past are now accessed in real-time from the core buttons on the controller!
Mana Shield, Mage Beam, Bolts, Magical Blasts, Orb Toss, and Elemental Bomb. Not to mention the elemental types change depending on your weapon.
It very much feels like casting spells, but don’t just take my word for it. I’m excited to show more Mage gameplay as we get closer to launch. She added there will be hot buttons for PC players in a follow-up. I'd say let's chill until they do a deep dive on combat later. There's no excuse for giving mages only 3 spells to pick!

so, since the Game Informer issue was released I've been avoiding this thread to be safe but I can see everybody is hiding the comments with spoilers from that article, is that it? maybe I can hangout here for a few more days/weeks If you want to be really safe, there's the Lighthouse thread which is the designated no-spoiler zone. yeah I've been hanging out there since the article was released, but the movement there is still slow I was feeling like Squidward looking to Spongebob and Patrick through the window

Are Chipper/Bubbly characters not well liked in entertainment media, or narrative RPGs specifically? I ask because it feels like you having such a character in your media seems like a pretty big negative for people I think it depensd on the characte rand if the yhav ea tendency t og ooverthe top with it. So be careful.

I ask because it feels like you having such a character in your media seems like a pretty big negative for people It's strange, because there's certain archetypes Bioware really like and keep coming back to over and over. Based on what little we've got so far, Bellara strikes me as a pretty standard cutesy, quirky Bioware female character (think ME1 Liara, Tali, Merrill, Josephine, Aerith, Dawn Star... Leliana initially seems like this but isn't really). Neve is the cynical femme fatale type (Miranda, Morrigan, Isabela, Vivienne, Silk Fox, Viconia, Jack sort of), and Taash is probably the no-nonsense warrior woman (Cassandra, Aveline, Samara, Bastila, Jaheira, Ashley sort of). I notice it most with the female companions because those are the ones whose romances I usually play through, but the male ones definitely fall under their own patterns as well, and Davrin and Lucanis in particular ring some really loud bells. Even Emmrich I'm guessing will be the Mordin/Kang well-meaning mad scientist type. I guess what I'm getting at is that if someone's particularly annoyed by any of these tropes, I'm not sure how they're still around.

Most people have been good about using spoiler tags but I've had a couple close calls where I saw a post telling someone to use spoiler tags but didn't see the actual post containing spoilers. Might just be a matter of time before seeing something. But I miss discussion on gameplay topics and keeping up with news so it is tough to find the right balance.

I ask because it feels like you having such a character in your media seems like a pretty big negative for people Depends on the type of story for me. Veilguard is supposedly about "regret" and some blighted gods and their entourage tearing up the world. Might work, might not. BioWare likes to do the "cheerful group of quirky individuals snark their way to inevitable victory against all odds". The world might end but we all know it won't, it's just the background for a funny and possibly romantic romp. On the other hand there's probably a reason why there are no chipper/bubbly characters in "Das Boot" or "Stalingrad".

Adventure stories are meant to be romps first and foremost and can't afford to be too grim. Same way the massive amounts of violence we engage in are not meant to be taken seriously, with all the physical and psychological dangers and ethical considerations involved in real life violence.

On the other hand there's probably a reason why there are no chipper/bubbly characters in "Das Boot" or "Stalingrad". I heard a youtuber a while ago say unironically that there's nothing uplifting about Dragon Age and I just have to wonder if he played the same games I did. Dragon Age has dark moments but it's not misery and dreariness from start to finish. The horror of how broodmothers come to be has to be counterbalanced with Zevran marveling at Wynne's bosom, Leandra's death hits harder because you have moments like Isabela going "Apostate prostitutes? Apostitues!", the gravity of the Inquisitor being basically a religious leader and how that symbolism can easily get out of hand is put to the side for a brief respite playing Wicked Grace with the lads. Dragon Age has always been about balancing darkness with lightheartedness, it's why the bad moments hit extra hard and why we appreciate the happy ones even more.

Well said.
AUTO-Attack in DA2 is what allowed me to play as a melee character. So, I enjoyed that experience for the first time. DAI removed all that I liked about DAO + DA2. BG3 is a game I lenjoy and can play. Combat is slow because of the "rules" but otherwise, It's a game I longed for quite some time.
Five levels of difficulty in DA:V is promising but until I see the castrated Mage in combat with a KB+M, I'll withhold my enthusiasm. I'm hoping some KB keys can be assigned to the mouse. I still have my MMO mouse somewhere, which has 12 buttons.
So it works like I expected it, but with new names for the abilities instead of re-using previous game spell names.
I'm really going to be conflicted between Mage and Warrior at release.

Too bad because I like mage rp wise but just too boring to play. I'm not feeling the daggers for the mage, really sucks when we have a mage companion with a bloody bow.

Thing is it looks like the gameplay is a lot about the weapons this time, I don't like staves. And saying stuff like you can change staff so you have a new element to deal damage with just doesn't fill me with confidence.

Don't think I've ever been this undecided about what class to play before the launch. I naturally gravitate towards mages, but what I've seen so far hasn't really spoken to me (I'm probably going to get flack for this, but to me the mages were the most fun in DA2). Rogue is usually my second choice, and I do like dual wielding, but I kind of have my eye on Lucanis, so playing a rogue myself might be... problematic. And then we have warrior, the class I usually spurn and have only enjoyed in DAO, but if I do play it my world will have a nice balance of different types of heroes.
I guess I just need to see more, hope the wait for info won't be too far away.

I assume that we're going to have enough flexibility to be able to have two rogues, just specced differently for different roles or for different missions. Gotta admit, I don't worry that much about combat at this point - rather, I wonder how easy/how many incentives I'd have to swap party members regularly so each would spend enough time with me to level them and raise approval, especially since gaining their approval now seems to be directly tied to their effectiveness in combat.

Yup I was leaning towards a rogue Crow but I might want to romance Lucanis so it is making me rethink everything lol. I wouldn't normally worry about it but the limit to 2 companions makes that seem less than ideal to have such similar builds. Although maybe being so similar we will share a lot of connections.

I guess I just need to see more, hope the wait for info won't be too far away. did you play much Reaver in DAI? That was the most fun I've had playing a warrior in a DA game, personally. Loved the risk/reward tradeoff, and playing basically the whole game (post-Skyhld) on the razor edge of being dead.

No idea about what class to play either. Rogues for my first playthrough are a bit of a DA tradition for me, though I've never particularly cared for them in other games. Warrior's the vanilla pick but a cool specialization might make them interesting. And my fondness for spellcasters has grown over the years, though in DA they usually have the worst looking gear. No point in settling on anything preemptively, I guess.

I wish I had thought to try to ask during the Q&A whether there will be locked doors/areas that only certain classes can open again. Because if so, that almost forces a rogue/mage/warrior team. I kind of hope it's a bit more flexible than that.
