I don't know if it's a glitch or what (i saw a couple of minor glitches during a main mission) but companions portrait got all red while Rook was interacting with something. They weren't dead, no fighting. I saw Neve portrait turn blue, but I don't know why. I saw Lucanis portrait turn red during a fight, but he wasn't dead. It looked different from when their abilities are on cooldown, but maybe it's still something related to them?

I'm pretty sure watching a Bellara recruiting mission I saw both portrait of companion goes red. I was confused and thought well perhaps bad pathfinding and they fell off a cliff, or the player didn't check and the companions aggroed. But nope they were fine. Later I saw the same with Rook was doing something and figured that's just a glitch of somekind ?

I got confused because someone here said they had health which contradicts everything I've heard so far. Would be nice to have an "official" statement. But I guess I'll see when it comes out and people talk about it. Yeah, me too. Given how many "deep dives" into all sorts of combat and the companions themselves we had so far surely someone would have mentioned it if there was a possibility for them to get hurt and needing assistance in a fight, right? Why would they? This is a fairly basic gameplay mechanic for RPGs with companions at this point including every single BioWare game I ever played or ever heard of...why would they change it? Why would they market something that hasn't changed? Especially when there is evidence of such things being there in the game already, there really isn't that much of a mystery here...unless one is trying to create one.

I thought that his portrait turning red was something related to one of his abilities, because (spoilers)
he also started to glow with purple aura. It was before we knew for sure that he is possessed by demon, but well, one of his abilities is called Abominate so it was self explanatory. I thought that maybe red icon was an indicator for this ability. Like, he got overtaken by demon or something like that.
But you saw it outside of combat, so now i have no idea. Maybe you're right and it's just a glitch.

The question is not really if they have health bars or not, but if they can actually take damage and be downed. ME2/3 (and maybe ME1? i don't remember) companions didn't have traditional health bars, for example, but they can still be killed. I did saw Michael Gamble say on xitter that you can disable companions health bars, but maybe he misunderstood the question and thought that it was about Rook's health bar.

Well, if I'm going to get those reflexes back in shape for DA:V, I figured I'd better start playing something a little faster-paced than BG3. You are so dedicated Hrungr, taking the time to work on your photo mode reflexes...

There is custom difficulty. Photo Mode will have a difficulty? Only the way Hrungr does it. Those colours won't saturate themselves, you know.

To be fair, NorZZa's latest video on companions showcased the damage each of their abilities deals, which is quite similar to Rook's. Additionally, there are hidden skills unlocked as quests progress. I don't think the companions are useless at all—the issue is that you can't control them directly and this might not resonate well with the WRPG fandom. I think their normal attack damage is lower than Rook's, not their abilities.
And I argue against calling them useless. If someone is dissapointed that they can't control them, then i don't have a problem with that.
Yeah I wouldn't exactly call the museless becaus eeven in pu;llin genemis off you t ooattack them that's one les senem yyou hav et dea lwit hin the moment. It jus tmeans you can just focus on th eenemies attacking you. TBH that's reall yal I d ofocfus on heenemies attacking m eand let th ecompanions dea lwith the guys targetting them. I generally onl ymop up if there' still anyone left after I have deal ttwith he horde trying to fight me. I undrestand people havin gissues over not being able t obod yjump into our companions and control them directly but it's not an issue for m eanywa yas I prefer to jus tfocus on my character and how I've built them. I prefer to have my companions automated and looking after their own business. I mean sure I'll help them if the yneed it but I prefer to focus on my character and ho w I'm gion gto level up and upgrade my gear and all that.

I'm excited about the gameplay. I don't really like how magical and flashy the Rogue and Warrior are, but they sure do look fun. I've always loved DA for its story and characters, and tolerated the gameplay as the cost of doing business. Now, it looks like I might enjoy the full experience, as I always have with Mass Effect. Opposite for me. This is the first Dragon Age game where I’ve hated the gameplay. The reason I’m even considering it is that it continues the story from Inquisition.

Maybe is because I'm just unlucky, but I'm noticing the devs are pushing a lot the girls companions, but are basically silent over the guys. Even with the lots we have seen of Lucanis, the discourse came from the fans, but not much from the devs themselves. I always see posts about Bellara and Taash, but for example basically nothing about Emmerich, even when talking about Davrin is about Assan, and he is precious, but as someone who doesn't care that much about the girls and will romance only the guys, I'm a little worried that the male companions will be less important and get less screen time than the gals.

I said in another thread it appears the purpose of having companions and the ability wheel is to have combo's. I want to see what the companions can do on their own without having rook hold their hand. I read somewhere that you can set the AI to detonate combos on its own, without Rook's input. So they can be allowed to play on their own without you babysitting them.
Which would be a relief for me. Most of the times I had to switch to companions in DA games was to move them out of stupid or to stop them doing stupid. Ran a party with Cole, Dorian and Bull for a while. Still scarred from the experience. We have been setting up combos since DAO, but somehow it's all new to some fans of the series. Kinda shows how much people paid attention to the tactical combat and synergies, eh? But suddenly everyone is a DAO tactical veteran that constantly switched between companions and used a dozen ability combos on every enemy. Can Aaron Rogers win without his offensive line and wide recievers? Can the Wide recievers catch the ball without a QB to throw it to them? Ummm...dunno. I honestly don't speak enough Klingon to understand you here Tha tsounds like th eepitome o fstupid comnsidering how squishy both Cole and Bull are. Sure they both mak egooddamag edealres but they do go down easily. Yo udefinitel yneed a decen ttank if you're going t obrin them both along.

Is it the devs or the video reviewers? As far as I tell, Taash and Emmerich have yet to be centre stage, so to speak.

So we've seen a sizable amount of gameplay breakdowns, got to check out our companions and the character creator, lamented over the lack of Keep choices, received various sentiments from content creators, and saw a handful of different story snippets and overviews.
With us nearly being a month away, how's everyone feeling right now?

I'm a little worried that the male companions will be less important and get less screen time than the gals. You might think you are seeing more of the girls because there has been a lot of early game play and the first companions to be recruited are Harding, Neve and Bellara. The first conversations at the Lighthouse also involves them. Lucanis is next in line because they show him immediately after his recruitment mission talking with Neve and Bellara. I'm not sure of the order thereafter but probably either Emmrich or Davrin. Act 1 is very long so plenty of time to get to know all the companions and do missions with them.It is even a joke among the Devs how John Epler tends to focus on Bellara, the character he wrote. Lucanis has featured a fair bit because his recruitment mission was one of those featured in the game showcase to invited guests. However, we know there is a lot involving the Wardens, which brings Davrin in (I think he compulsory for some of their missions) and there the Grand Necropolis features in a lot of screen shots, so plenty to do with Emmrich. Unless they start showing even more spoilers before release, I think they were keeping the other companions under wraps because they want to leave something for us to discover on our own.

It's just the content they have showed. By the 2nd mission of the game you have Harding, Neve and Bellara recruited and those two missions are the most showns in gameplay. Then it seems you get all 3 boys because Taash is the last one recruited. So unless you want the entire first Act spoiled, you'll have to do with not seeing much of the boys.

I've see the "Taash romance is the most spicy!" and how Hepler can't stop talking about Bellara, Harding and Neve are everywhere, while about Lucanis aside the "short king" and the "bisexual disaster" at the beginning, I've seen little talk from the devs. Is just a feeling I get that the devs are much more in love with the gals than with the guys.

Wait, so we don't choose in which order we recruit companions? Not the ladies at least.

Not great that you can’t pick the order you get the companions. All female and also mage heavy. Normally I would like a mage heavy team, but not with Veilguard’s combat. Also can’t stand Bellara. Wish I had the option to not recruit her.
I liked how BG3 did it where you got most of the companions at the start, so you could take the mix of characters you liked best.

A lot of it has to do with the prominence of specific writers. Emmrich's writer doesn't have social media and therefore isn't saying anything to hype him up like Epler or Weekes. Lucanis's writer has been, unfortunately, let go.
