David Gaider @davidgaider.bsky.socialA question I've received frequently, as of late: "Will you be playing the new Dragon Age?" Asked with a degree of, I don't know, anticipation? Like this is something I'd do covertly, to spite the current team. Or out of interest in hearing my True and Honest Thoughts. My answer: "It's complicated." Honestly, I don't think I can play and enjoy the game like other fans play and enjoy the game. Not ever. On one hand, it'd be fun to play my 1st DA game post-release without seeing all the compromises and cuts and disappointments from years of development. On the other, it's my baby. It's moved on. Do I like everything I see? Not really. The art style leaves me a bit cold, but then the art style has changed with every DA and, as before, I'm sure I'll warm to it eventually. The gameplay has changed. The news on choices from previous games gives me pause. None of this would stop me, however. That's because there's a lot I see which I do love. To go to these places I once dreamed of and finally see them there in all their glory? How cool is that? I have every confidence in Patrick and their writers to enthrall the fans and provide a worthy next chapter. Not a single doubt on that front. So what'd stop me? Ego, probably. If I love it, I know a selfish part of me will ache that I wasn't part of it. And if there are parts I don't love, a part of me will wonder how it Might Have Been... so completely unfair to the team, not to mention ludicrous considering I've been away 8 years now. If I get it on release, it'd probably be so I'd have something to distract me while the US inevitably self-immolates in November. 🫠 Chances are I won't. That's no slight to the team, who I wish every success and kudo possible. I know the road to now was paved with horrors, so they deserve it all. ❤️ John Epler is anticipating @eplerjc.bsky.socialhonestly i cannot imagine making a different decision in your position Trick Weekes @trickweekes.bsky.socialYep. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when Matt Rhodes and his team decided to go with the artistic depiction of the game they went with. Not out of spite. But out of what ultimately went into the justification, and how other members in the team felt about the decision. Whether you love it, hate it, or are indifferent (like I am), no doubt there had to be some who thought it would be quite polarizing. I only say live service game.

MEA's art direction was more or less a continuation of what was established in the trilogy which I did appreciate. Overall I'd say the visuals were MEA's best feature(some great spaces vistas in particular), however, the characters designs were pretty dull, and the remnant caves were were remarkably boring looking.

Meanwhile in insane news; as a graphic designer I have always had a weird inclination towards purple. I almost always try making stuff purple when I'm at a loss, even though it never sticks; kind of like how I always briefly keep a moustache when shaving. Ha, one thing I've learned working with designers(UI/UX), is that they love magenta. DAO - is red (i think) DA2 - ? (can't remember) DAI - is green
As you have more games finding a colour will be more hard. And purple is better than blue in my eyes because it is a warmer colour. So i t will be interessting what colour the next DA game will have. As the main colours are done.
And as for magenta it is a normal colour for printing. Four-color printing CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) So using magenta making printing easier and less expencive.

Unlike MMOs, live service games aren't graphically restricted by their online component, and we know Frostbite game with heavy online components that look quite hyperrealistic (Star Wars Battlefront II) It's a conscious choice, not some strangely untouched leftover from a time they were designing DAVe as a game with online component. Like, whatever people think, DA franchise was always somewhat stylized. The fact that it's obvious now is because there are not as many technical limitations impeding graphics as there were in 2009, or even 2014 (which is why speculating that DA style is a leftover from a time it was an online game is very, very strange indeed)

Also Purple is usually tied with mysticism and spirituality aka magic and some stuff. Any other reason to use the colour even though the main colour of magic in this world is either green to relate to the veil or blue with lyrium and common association with mana. It is also a colour of royaltly and excess might be an indicator of the game setting being Tevinter and other great kingdoms like Antiva... Or could be an indicator of the elven gods too. A lot of reason to use a purple colour.
Also i think like DAO the colour of DA2 is red and white but also with a hint of black if the cover art is any indicator.

In DA red color is a color of blight and blood magic. Blue is a color of magic, particularly ancient elvhen magic. In released gameplay videos Bellara even makes comment that the blight controlled by the blighted god-kings seems to grow mostly in places where elvhen magic is the strongest. While I do believe general western symbolism of purple plays a role, I'd say it's most strongly tied to elements of the story.

The reaction to the new more stylized art design reminds me so much of the Wind Waker days, in the same sort of rhetoric being used. "They're making Zelda kiddy", "They're making it for casuals", "What happened to the 'realism' they promised" etc. And WW was ACTUALLY cartoony. Meanwhile, me, a A Link to the Past enjoyer, was like:

It seems like a German journalist might be playing the game.(from Pcgames germany I think) If memory serves this dude was playing maybe BG3 before release and making comments on his forum. Either way review copies might be out in the wilds.

Hu??? there was a debate ????? I forget where the debate was exactly but it made my brain melt. Because:
Purple does not actually exist.
Our eyes perceive color in the visible spectrum due to particular wavelengths: Red is the longest wavelength, at 700 nanometers, whereas violet is the shortest, at 380 nanometers. This is why the invisible wavelengths just below this threshold are known as ultraviolet, or UV rays (and why wavelengths directly above 700 nanometers are known as “infrared”).
The color purple, however, is what physicists call a “nonspectral color,” meaning it isn’t represented by a particular wavelength of light, but is instead a mixture of them as perceived by our brain. While some people use violet and purple interchangeably, the two colors are distinct; violet (which is part of the visible spectrum) has a more bluish hue, whereas purple is more red. The cones in our eyes receive inputs, and our brain uses ratios of these inputs to represent subtleties of color. Purple is therefore a complete construction of our brain, as no wavelength represents the color naturally.

Comments on one of Veilguard thread on Resetera, I just saw it yesterday thought. People there were saying a reviewer to some place (I don't remember the specific, I would have to go check the thread again) said last week that she had the game. And Shinobi didn't deny it (he's plugged at BioWare).

Sorry, Mike, the minute the news was out someone was blasting Tumblr telling people to not buy the game because it could be hacked easily.

I know this doesn't mean the game is amazing, but if they weren't confident would they give them this much time?
