We've also never had a specific pet recruiting mission like we have with party members. I would be on board if we happened to, say, get lost in a desert sandstorm or a downpour in mountains (perhaps sans other party members?) and came across an interesting critter. That reminds me, the Black Emporium had those miniature animals running around. What if our animal companion had been on the receiving end of such spell and we needed to undo it, or perhaps we just could purchase this particular spell from Xenon or someone similar? Having a miniature hunting dracolisk following us to the field and having it sometimes chi(r)p in to party banter could be cute.
We have, though! If you play as ANY origin other than Cousland in DAO, you have to find the red flower in the Korcari Wilds that can cure the taint and heal the sick mabari in the camp, then recruit it when it comes chasing after you (after Ostagar, I think? It's been a while), or you will not get a mabari companion.

Argh, I totally forgot that there was only one sick dog in the kennel. Thanks for pointing that out. Since we could pick more than one flower (and my wardens always did) during the quest, I think I ended up remembering it as the warden bringing back a whole bunch of flowers in case more dogs had gotten or would get sick. So despite all contrary evidence I never thought of it as helping just that one dog. 😅 #did i make it obvious i'm a dog person? #i grew up in a six-dog family

I feel like you'd need at least a +4 weapon to hit him. Mark Darrah must be at least as powerful as Kangaxx.
So all you really need to do is find six scrolls of Protection From Management somewhere, use them on your whole party and then have Imoen cast Melf's Minute Meteors until he dies.
(Yeah, yeah, I know it's Dragon Age day and not Baldur's Gate day. But none of the optional DA bosses so far as as rididulously fiddly as their BG inspiration.)
