Plus I mean they probably want to talk about it because they are excited. They want to talk about it. Why I don't tend to get too upset, it must be just as excrutiating for them..in a way...to not actually share things with us as it is for us to actually not get any information. I suppose one of the good things about live services in games is you don't get these situations where people have completely finished a game 10 years ago and are waiting for the next installment. I guess with the live services they can get people playing continuously longer making the wait for the next installment less excruciating and with the increased development times of games, they can provide smaller continuous content for years and years keeping the community satisfied. I'm coming around to live services for AAA games I must admit The downside, though, would be getting watered down versions of story installments that will most likely not be all that self contained and will be a holding pattern for the next installment which will require you to wait an arbitrary amount of time like the second half of the chapters for SWTOR Knights of the Fallen Empire. Anyway, let's not forget that DA4 is in a unique position of having been rebooted mid-development so Anthem could be booted out the door in some kind of working state. In an ideal environment, we'd probably have had DA4 by now. Even MEA's 5 year dev cicle was due to a lot of mis-management and not locking down what the main point of the game was early on.

I do have suspicions that a big reason behind long development times this generation is as a result of a developer 'paralysis by analysis' of sorts. Games cost so much money nowadays that it's becoming more and common that developers get to a certain stage in development and their like 'shit, shit, fuck - this might not reach publisher targets - everybody panic'.
The project is then totally restarted, and everything's going well, until they again reach that familiar milestone of worrying about the game's potential success and the project is again scrapped. All the while development time is mounting up and money's being spent in the boatload to keep the project afloat.
Heck a big example is WB Games Montreal(Arkham Origins). The studio with literally no output this gen, and a dozen cancelled projects.

Most of them don't have as much money and they too have to worry and calculate and analyze whether their game will be a worthwhile investment of their efforts and time. How many postponed or cancelled games are there on indiesphere? How many fizzled out Kickstarter projects?

That has proven to be more than enough for them for the time being. Half that time they've spent trying to NOT be in the news. Their parent company's subsidiary (Zenimax Online) is doing fine tho. They've just released yet another big yearly expansion to their MMO (ESO) - Greymoor, which is basically bigger Skyrim: Dawnguard. Despite pandemic messing with smooth release more than usual, I don't think there was much controversy stirred anywhere. ESO is doing fine, but the single player Elder Scrolls are in seemingly incompetent hands at the moment, yes. Hopefully, BGS gets their act together. Watlander DLC for FO76 seems to have been a bit of a wakeup call, at least.
Tell me Tell me what you think we'll see on June 11th (EAPlay) Please... Speculate As I mentioned earlier, it sounds like a remaster of the Mass Effect Trilogy is happening. There are hints that Star Wars "Project Maverick" is being revealed tomorrow. If so, I'd expect more on that on the 11th. Maybe a BW Dev Diary...? The only downside to a remastered ME trilogy is that we'll probably have to wait forever and a day for the mods to get ported. :/

We just don't care enough to follow it like we do AAA games. Out of sight, out of mind.

I think in a way the success of Skyrim is now a curse for whoever is designing a new one, because how does one tops a game that turned out to be this big and influential? Even if ES6 turns out to be really good, if it isn't as big or bigger hit than ES5 people are likely going to CRUCIFY them (entirely irrespective of companies or investors always chasing better sales numbers).

Isn't GTA Online the real cash cow? It seems like topping GTA V would be easy, since the single-player games are basically vestigial at this point.
EDIT: I actually did a quick search and came up with an article that argues GTA VI is a money-losing proposition for Rockstar, given the huge popularity of GTA Online.

Online is their cash-cow, but GTA V's game sales are still insane. Think ~20m copies sold just last year, and 130m sold overall. That's 40% of all GTA sales.

We don't know yet. But given it's a remaster I assume they'll keep it in Unreal.

Actually I'm starting to suspect...and this is as a layman only with the barest understanding of internal workings of the industry...that one of the reasons for the ls push is that during pre pod for a game usually requires a smaller team...which leaves a lot of people being paid and twiddling their thumbs. Now they have something to do to justify their employment as production on whatevers next ramps up. What's amazing to me is that whether they call it LS or not virtually everyone's doing it. Just got into Civ 6 and even they just did a long year long series of updates just started being released. How is Civ 6 relative to Civ 5? I heard people were saying it's a fair bit different?

Its about as different from 5 as 5 was to 4. . I didn't really...hell you know I don't think I've ever actually finished a game of Civ 5 and I just didn't like it anywhere near as much as 4 which is probably my favorite. Right now Civ 6 is pretty descent. I made a long post in the 'what did you do today in any game out there' thread on my experiences with the full game...sans the expansions...but yeah its pretty good actually. The two biggest changes is they allowed the cities to sprawl out a lot more with the districts and they revamped it by adding a civics tree. Of course these two changes make it an almost entirely different game in feel from 4.

Was reading through the Tevinter Nights spoiler thread and was wondering: can someone tweet Patrick a kinda spoilery question in ROT13: Why does "The Dread Wolf Take You" speak of the idol as having two figures instead of three? Is this on purpose? I don't think he's responded to that question, as far as I've seen (Since I'm sure Hrungr would have put it here), so its worth a shot, I think?

Aaahh dammit, I see it. June 4th was the date that got indefinitely cancelled AAAGGHH I really don´t believe that we will see any gaming event this week or even next week. So likely no EA Play on June 11th
This isn´t the time for videogames.

It's a pity about these cancellations. Still, I'm looking forward to Larian Studios June 6 event with new Baldur's Gate 3 announcements.
