They skipped on the part of recurrent spending which is mostly a MP thing only a few SP games have microtransactions/lootboxes, so buying a game isn't the only factor. Not to mention the paradox they just presented: Buying Anthem = more MP games. Not buying Anthem = studio closing, meaning we can't buy the upcoming SP game. There is currently no new SP game available for purchase from BW.
I will preface this by pointing out that I'm obviously biased given my position but:
The takeaway I got from that was if you buy SP games anywhere it will influence the market as a whole, doesn't have to be specifically a Bioware/EA game. As an anecdote, one of the only reasons there are mounts in DAI is because Skyrim had mounts and someone from up-high thought we therefore needed them - a lot of designs had to be bent to account for this not to mention extra animation time that could have went elsewhere .
Not to mention, a common problem in the industry, especially when there isn't a clear vision for a product is 'last-game-itis' where you jam in features from a game you recently played because it felt good in that context. As an educated guess, I imagine that most game designers have probably played the new God of War and Spider-Man games and so you'll probably see a lot of those cinematic kill animations in just about every action game for the next 3+ years.

As an educated guess, I imagine that most game designers have probably played the new God of War and Spider-Man games and so you'll probably see a lot of those cinematic kill animations in just about every action game for the next 3+ years. You say that like it's a bad thing... I'm good with them - more than good, actually really like - in boss or plot mandated/relevant encounters OR in encounters where developers would like to present a choice to either kill or spare the enemy, but they can certainly be overdone (see the Witcher 3 with its 'finisher' setting). I know you can turn them off, but then you lose them entirely. They were nice for mooks every now and then, but it got old. The Batman Arkham games were also particularly bad at this (although, of course, Batman doesn't kill.... ).

Interesting, thank you. Not about the amount of work it took - I figured that myself, but about the driver for horses. They were useful for when you had a destination you'd already covered off that wasn't really conveniently located for fast travel (not many) or for when you simply didn't want to use fast travel (for whatever reason), but killing the banter made it almost a no-go for me in play-throughs beyond the second one. From a RPing perspective, having a horse(s) makes perfect sense, and I guess pathfinding for 3 companions on horses (assuming you could find a horse for The Iron Bull) would've been an even bigger nightmare, but it would certainly have been interesting to see what we "might" have had in place of horses for the same development cost. Peter Parker ruins everything.

(good, I mean, the Blade of Woe is meant for use on single NPCs, but I like to take out a mage before attacking the rest of the group )

Fun little, nitpicky thing DragonKingReborn and LukeBarrett - from a perspective of someone who rode horses for quite some time... virtually all mounts in Inquisition are like they're designed for Iron Bull They're massive, all of them. I'm a tall, heavy person that had to pick tall, sturdy mounts and Inqusition horses dwarf biggest ones I sat on by a large margin. Horse's height is measured from ground to the top of their withers (a ridge between their shoulder blades, in case someone's curious) and the DAI mounts withers height go past even IB's head. That's... tallllllllll. Most characters smaller than Qunari may have some trouble with hopping on a saddle (either the stirrup's too high to hook a foot and make a proper bounce, or the distance between stirrup and saddle seat may be too big to throw the other leg above the cantle in a graceful fashion). So I actually have no issue with IB on a DAI horse. Looks proportionate, especially given most mounts' hefty build. No, what's hilarious to me is seeing Varric and dwarf Quizzy hopping on and then riding them, with elves being close 2nd, because that's some powerful magic keeping them there

And I think they've improved quite a bit in recent years - Assassin's Creed: Origins & Odyssey, Shadows of Mordor/War, Doom, Tomb Raider reboot, God of War... They all flow quite well, though you'll notice they all have a fixed protag body type, limited weapon variety, and limited opponent body types to deal with. It would obviously be a much greater challenge to implement for a game like Dragon Age, with short to tall races, lots of weapon types, magic, and a large variety of enemy body types. You'll notice in these games you're typically either invulnerable for the duration of the glory-kill animation, or enemies just won't attack you, or both.

I love kill scenes, I'm tending to turn into a Japanese tourist whenever they kick in in my latest Skyrim pt, most make me go "meh, that could have been SO good!" but thanks to wonky camera angles don't turn out as such, I do love this one however, if only more could turn out like it... I'm terrible for screenshots...
I mean, this one would have been pretty good but for some reason the camera decides to cut off your head...

I'm personally not the biggest fan of kill scenes. There are games where they're done beautifully (I'm looking at you DOOM) and those I don't mind, but most of the time they simply disrupt my gameplay. When it comes to DA I don't mind not having them. Well... Except for dragon kills. These deserve their animation back. Even if - while you gracefully kill said dragon - one of your companions dies. May or may not happened to Alistair a few times in DAO

Mike Laidlaw I have no recollection of DAI's protag being human only. We'd always wanted to do at least Human Elf Dwarf, and Qunari / Kossith was added after we delayed.

Interesting. Horse riding in Battlefield 1 is pretty decent. Did the DICE guys learn from Bioware? AFAIK, Bioware working on mounts or RPG tools for the engine at the time means other EA studios can now iterate and refine them for the benefit of those who use Frostbite engine, rather than having to create something from the scratch. I imagine that IF there are mounts in DA4, Bioware will in turn use what DICE did for Battlefield 1, thus further iterating the mounts/quadruples and so on and so forth. From the way I see it seems to be one of the driving ideas behind the whole 'all aboard that Frostbite boat'.

I don't recall who said it was human only, but it was one of the first details we learned Not to mention it is obvious that the majority of the dialogue was written with a human protagonist in mind and the racial options were last minute additions. In fact the PC being at the Conclave at all really only makes sense for a human; either they are a mage from the Circle or their family's token member of the Chantry. Strangely enough the alleged latest addition, the Vashoth mercenary, had more reason to be in the area than a Dalish spy or a dwarven member of the Carta. Still, regardless of what point they decided to include other races, we always knew Solas was only a late addition as a romance and gated for elves only. At the time it might have been possible to think he could have romanced other people but for time limitations. However, now we know his agenda it is clear he could never have been a romance option for anyone other than an elf and it was pretty much a stretch for him to do that.

Wasn’t it originally going to be hawke? No. There was an expansion planned for DA2, but the third game was always going to star a new protagonist.

We'd always wanted to do at least Human Elf Dwarf, and Qunari / Kossith was added after we delayed. Weird that Mike says he has no recollection as I remember that being a major source of complaint on the BSN forums for quite a while. I don't recall who said it was human only, but it was one of the first details we learned. I believe we didn't find out there would be any other races until after the delay, and then even later we found out about the Qunari. I couldn't find info that says Inquisitor was meant to be Human only. All i found is pure conjecture: dragonage.fandom.com/wiki/Forum:The_REAL_Inquisitor_is_a_Male_Human_Mage._Believe_it! There's a problem with the "!" in the URL, just put ! at the end.
