rereading this, why would Briala think Celene hadn't instigated this? Assassins that want to be done and gone BEFORE Celene arrives? At least, that's how I explain how she never caught on to the truth of the matter before. Willful ignorance also played a part, I'm sure. Briala did catch on to the truth but drew the wrong conclusion. She knew the assassins hadn't been sent for Celene, which is what Celene initially tries to convince her of. She says that Gaspard had no reason to send assassins as he no longer thinks Celene is a threat. Plus only Celene and Lady Mantillon would know that Celene was out for the evening and if the assassins wanted her then they would have waited for her to return. Thus Briala realises they were specifically sent to kill the servants. However, she surmises that Lady Mantillon must have sent them to keep her meeting with Celene a secret, which Celene is happy to go along with. Naturally at the time Briala would want to suspect someone other than Celene. Then as you say, once she had killed Lady Mantillon she preferred to put the matter from her mind. She realised the truth when she saw that Gaspard had a ring like Celene's and that she had first seen Celene wearing hers after she returned from meeting Lady Mantillon to a house of dead servants and confirmed that Lady Mantillon had agreed to support her. I've just realised though that apparently Celene did not forget it so easily and apparently recalled that meeting with Lady Mantillon often in the morning in the pre-dawn light, presumably as she looked at Briala sleeping next to her. (page 357). Which is creepy. Not hard to imagine that it's something traumatic neither can get over, in their own way. |

Not hard to imagine that it's something traumatic neither can get over, in their own way. Yeah, poor Celene You may joke, but I do find both of them tragic as it pertains to living in an awful system, trying to survive it and then attempting to do something to make it less awful... which oftentimes includes doing awful things. Celene doesn't strike me as a sociopathic power-grabber, but someone who found herself in situations where - rightly or wrongly - she had to do many questionable things. She's the character in the same vein as Loghain, Bhelen or Solas and not Howe or Corypheus. |

You know, after reading The Masked Empire I really, really, REALLY hated the idea of reconciling Celene and Briala, because I found Celene's actions wholly horrific (not just burning the alienage, but being responsible for Briala's parents' deaths and then just.... having sex with her for years...... and never telling her the truth).
But nowadays I'm kind of like, eh, if that's the society they were raised in, and Briala has no qualms about returning to Celene after that (or at least her love for Celene overcomes her reluctance to be with her), then who am I to put my foot down? Maybe Celene is genuinely remorseful (for her actions, not just for hurting Briala), maybe she's not, but my Inquisitor doesn't know every sordid detail of their relationship and on a meta level I think the Ambassador Briala outcome is about as good as it gets for the elves. And I as a player like all sorts of morally ambiguous characters, so it's really not fair of me to single Celene out for being a product of her environment when I like Anora (who crushes riots in the Alienage if she rules alone) and Bhelen ('nuff said).

For what it's worth, I don't see Briala being "what future city elves aspire to" - Orlesian city elves, maybe, and even then the Alienage elves weren't exactly impressed with Briala in TME. Some of the epilogue slides in DAO have Shianni or Cyrion appointed as Bann of the Alienage in Denerim (so a Fereldan system). Doesn't end well for Shianni, but my point is that elves in every nation are working within the established systems to accrue political power. In some world states, members of clan Lavellan are appointed to Wycome's city council along with city elves and humans. edit: An elf can become Arl of Amaranthine. And as Divine, Leliana invites elves (and dwarves and qunari) to join the priesthood. Sure, that's an Andrastian institution, but there are a lot of Andrastian elves and it's progress for them. I think the issue is that elves - even "all city elves" or "all Dalish elves" - are not of one mind, and most of them are looking at the nations they reside in for answers. There are certainly individual elves, and groups of elves, who I imagine would prefer a separate elven state altogether, to reclaim the Dales or to have their own elf-only political offices and councils. But there's no consensus and there never has been, so what's better for modern elves is going to vary widely depending on which elf you ask. |

While I can understand this stance from a in-universe logic, no matter how many Inquisitors I've played of completely varied personalities, I am literally incapable of ever reconciling Celene and Briala. In my life, I've seen far too many loved ones damaged by such controlling, abusive relationships; one friend keeps bouncing back and forth from too trusting to not at all, one relative was murdered right after finally getting out, and one of her sons became a drug addict from the trauma. So regardless of how it's written (or rewritten, in Weekes' case  ) I cannot be objective about such plots. For me personally, it's right up there with a Tabris who leaves Shianni with Vaughn, or a Hawke who sells Fenris back to Danarius     . |

Some of this stuff is real, some of them are based on real stuff... and a separate, looong column is just a lot of made up things that zoomed through my brain one day and I thought they sounded interesting. Thus, whenever I can't find a name or nothing sounds right, I just open the file and browse through it and see if something pops out at me  |

My tabletop RPG friends and I spent a couple hours one evening in 2014 "helping" our GM find random names for the Shadar-kai NPCs she was planning on bringing into the campaign she was preparing to run. I don't know the URL anymore, but the random name generator we were using was supposed to be for Drow. But we got all sorts of weird and often hilarious names from it, nothing especially useful for our GM, though.  As far as I could tell, this thing randomly put together a couple of syllables for the first name, then randomly put together a couple of single-syllable , vaguely ominous English words for the second name. My favourite randomly generated "Drow" name was Dude Chillmage. It became something of a running gag for the rest of the campaign, which lasted from October 2014 until June 2018. |

) I cannot be objective about such plots. For me personally, it's right up there with a Tabris who leaves Shianni with Vaughn, or a Hawke who sells Fenris back to Danarius
