Also, bird and reptiles are related. So are mammals and reptiles, but that doesn't mean you should put a fire-breathing mammoth in your game and call it a dragon.

The obvious name for such a creature would be Pyro-derm. Only if they were on fire. Pachyderm is literally "thick skin." Pyroderm sounds like a term reserved for a severe inflammatory skin reaction.

So is there a general non-human thread somewhere unrelated to a specific game? A fan of those should make one. I only suggest it because I occasionally have a fun thing to point out that is not necessarily franchise-related, but it wouldn't be a prime hangout for me generally.

I guess the off-topic forum would be the place to discuss our favourite creatures from myth and folklore?

I'm a female player - my canon character will likely be a female that romances a male, probably human or elf. That however could change depending on the story and love interests, can't say for sure until I actually start playing the game.
Then on future playthroughs I would romance other genders/races, including playing as a male, if that character interests me or I think it is the one my pc would go for. So I selected all the "I'm a lady..." options

Companions only interested in player characters of their own species, a la Solas. Interspecies attraction is definitely possible, but it doesn't make sense for it to be normal, much less universal.
And plenty of casually romancable npcs throughout the setting, not unlike Andromeda. Playing a badass chicka with a girl in every port and no time or energy for a real relationship but plenty of flirt in her was one of my primary joys in that game.

Now that the thread has morphed...
I am a lady person who will probably romance ALL THE THINGS at some point, though my personal preference is usually no things, with some rad bromance along the way.
But I usually get a LOT of mileage out of a good RPG. And that includes assorted twu wuvs. So I just voted for dwarf lady and dwarf dude to pad their numbers, but let the record state that in spirit, I voted for all of them.

If anything non-human races mitigate the uncanny valley a bit because they are supposed to look similar but a bit different to humans.

Will someone please explain wtf 'uncanny valley' is supposed to mean in this context? Uncanny valley is when better technology looks more and more human, realism keeps going up and up and up... until suddenly it drops into a weird creepy valley. In the valley, characters look almost human but are juuuuust enough off that they skeeve out the part of our brain that’s really good at recognizing subtle defects in human faces. More stylized/fantastical faces have a better chance of being unrealistic enough that they’re before the valley rather than inside it.

arvaarad But the remark doesn't makes sense in this context. If anything, I'd think that issues with uncanny valley would lead someone to prefer non-humans.

I don't worry too much about uncanny valley in DA4. Not that I think it's not going to happen, but I kinda get used to that in Bioware games. Despite awkward animations and sometimes weird faces, some characters are pretty attractive, at least for my standard.

I've never experienced uncanny valley in a BioWare game (or any video game... I think). Uncanny valley is a genuinely disturbing feeling. It's rare.

In the poll, I ticked all the "Im a lady and Id romance a x lady" options... EXCEPT for the dwarf. This might be an unpopular opinion idk... but there are dwarf characters I enjoy and like but none I really feel attracted to. Im not sure if its their general appearance or that Im not really interested in them as a idk race/society but I have never really hoped for a dwarf romance option. Qunari, human and elf are all good for me though I think my perfect romance option would be a Qunari lady who is maybe a mage, and is involved in blood magic or necromancy (or both) and is really quite mean and evil

Well, maybe it would help if we knew even one gay/bi male dwarf. You know, to feed the fantasy. But, we, know, ZERO. Wtf is up with that? Bioware? Hopefully we’ll get to see a lot of ambassadoria dwarves in Tevinter. I think part of the problem so far has been, any dwarf that can travel with us on the surface is a surfacer, which limits the kind of dwarves they can be. They’re all sort of outcasts by definition. Which means there haven’t been a lot of dwarven companions overall. But perhaps the rules are different in northern Thedas, and there are ways for dwarves to travel without severing so many connections. Or, maybe we’ll spend enough time dealing with titan stuff that an out-of-party dwarven companion would be viable. Well we know that Kal Sharok's culture has changed from Orzammar, but not the details on how. Perhaps they've dumped the whole 'setting foot above ground makes you castless thing', which would open up the options for why a dwarf companion is on the surface.

It still makes no sense to me in regards to computer games, because we know they aren't real humans. We know they are computer generated characters (we aren't talking FMV type games like in the 90s, where real people were used to play characters, not just voice them). So why would my brain think they are real people and then be weirded out by finding out something I already knew to begin with?

So why would my brain think they are real people and then be weirded out by finding out something I already knew to begin with? Because that part of the brain is not thinking through things sequentially like that. It’s a snap judgment, presumably meant to keep us away from people who might be sick or in a weird emotional state. Though we should note, most modern videogames are aware of this phenomenon on some level, so they actually don’t (or don’t often) trigger the uncanny valley. Even games that are otherwise very realistic will intentionally stylize some aspects of the face specifically to avoid this effect. We don’t really notice it that much because, due to this phenomenon, stylized faces often look “more real” to us than less stylized ones.

I wonder how that maps onto moral foundations theory. I've never been able to find a triggering point for perceiving the UV myself, and my sanctity/purity value seems to be approximately zero.
