Call of Duty: Vanguard having a hard time. As the new title was, apparently (I don't know, I don't follow Call of Duty), involved in some controversy, it saw its retail sales down by 26% and, much worse, its digital sales down by a whopping 44%. Of course, compared to last year's Call of Duty, Cold War, which has sold ~30 million copies to date, even a 40% drop, would still see the title sell ~19 million copies. However, it still is a steep drop for the Call of Duty franchise that was seeing diminishing returns on its brand, up until the remaster of Modern Warfare in 2019, which skyrocketed its sales back to ~30 million copies. The franchise hadn't seen those numbers for nearly a decade. I am not a big FPS fan, but what I have been told and reading is that it has a pretty big stuttering issue so you can see how that would be a big turnoff for that group of players since it would impact gameplay in a severe way. Along with other issues that just make the game problematic at best to play. Edit: Just for more info. Normally I get most of my info for games I am not playing from Digital Foundry for its mostly a tech breakdown of the games. Here is the one for Vanguard YouTube linkGoing back and reading a comment in a different article it could also be that its just players burning out on the setting. Some people are comparing CoD to FIFA and Madden. A yearly release with minor incremental upgrades. It was a real head scratcher for the franchise to go back to world war 2 again. They really need to get creative because games like 2042 and Infinite are probably going to surpass them.

It was a real head scratcher for the franchise to go back to world war 2 again. They really need to get creative because games like 2042 and Infinite are probably going to surpass them. Battlefield 2042 actually has a lot of problems. Fans call it a regression, even as to Batllefield 1. Not to say that Battlefield V didn't have its own problems, with trailing behind on pre-orders, compared to previous entries in the franchise. And as shown in the statista link Iprovided above, CoD: WWII was one of the better sellers of the past decade, being above the 2018 and 2016 CoD entries, in terms of sales. And if that 40% sales decrease compared to Cold War is consistent, Vanguard will only match WWII's sales. Not to say that 20 million copies sold in a year is a bad track record, by any means, but a 10 million copies drop, year over year, is a gigantic drop. If that drop proves to be consistent, then some heads will roll.

Meh, even if 2042 has its problems and I have my criticisms it's a lot more enjoyable than Vanguard is.

Sounds like any other Dice game but they managed to make it a fun experience even BFV which I’m not too fond of managed to have some interesting features.

Sounds like any other Dice game but they managed to make it a fun experience even BFV which I’m not too fond of managed to have some interesting features. From what I've seen, I don't know if I'd call it "any othe DICE game", but it still needs another year in development. It's even missing features of previous games. It doesn't even have destruction mechanics. You can shoot a building with a projectile from a tank, and it will still look pristine.

At least Vanguard has a single playe rcampaignthis year quite a fun one by the looks of it too as far as I know 2042 is MP only. I could see myself getting Vanguard when it goes cheap for the campaign eventually. I don' t however see myself going anywhere near 2042 though. As for why Vanguard went back t oWW2 I think it has something t odo wit hthe fact the times when the yhave tried something diffreent it hasn't always sold well. So it looks like the just chose to stick with what they know has worked for the franchise because COD has built up it's reputation on telling stories about WW2

It’s like Thanksgiving came early for my schadenfreude. I have been sending article links to friends that continuously complain about EA and how "no other company would be as bad as EA". I do wonder either Rockstar or ActiBlizz would get voted Worse Company of the Year, or the internet would be the internet and vote them the best.

Yes, but just going by my experience online the online commentary has the attention span of a chipmunk drinking espresso when it comes to gaming companies outside of EA. Now it has changed with the recent charges against Blizzard and now Activision as a whole, but I don't have the faith that the majority of the people that would vote for something like that really care unless its EA. While I do think EA like any other company needs to be called out for its practices, I think there is a division between when EA does something and another company does just as bad. Now I am not saying that people aren't writing articles about the lousy practices of these companies, but the online community doesn't care nearly as much unless EA is involved. There will always be people that will hold a company accountable, but there has been too long a narrative that its just EA or EA is the worst of the worst and for me its just that people have only wanted to see these actions in EA and not any other.
