Don’t be dense. This mechanism and others like it will be combined with the ever-widening and ever-ambiguous obscenity laws to criminalize more and more people. Active death and bomb threats on real people and places, fine those are crimes warranting police attention which a reasonable person would find appropriate; however, insults and general toxic behavior does not warrant police attention. Hm, strange, that's what the article is saying Secondly, an agreement is in place so that in extreme cases, where there is a threat to life or potential serious harm spotted, staff can fast track the information to police. They will then decide whether or not to act. ... "We wanted to focus on the most extreme cases, make sure we do the right thing there because it gives us a solid foundation to build the rest of our work around." Less than 0.01% of cases that the centre deals with end up requiring police intervention. That works out as roughly a handful of cases a month. Most of the time, accounts will be temporarily banned or permanently closed if players have breached a code of conduct. Doesn't seem to me they mean toxic behavior.

People reporting crimes to police? That's a police state! Apparently less than 0.1% of incidents will involve police attention, most will just involve the termination of someone's account. BTW I'm okay with this. Why? Because I've seen people targeted by hate campaigns so vicious that every time they load up a specific game their internet gets DDOS'd (DDOSing in general was a thing in Destiny 2 for some reason. Especially in console matches). Do I think these fuckers should be reported to the police? Yup. If there's any doxxing going around, any attempted doxxing, any threats that go with doxxing, sure. In fact any sort of thing where people try and affect your real life, I would love for the police to get involved 100%. Because some people need to learn there's actually consequences for your actions, and that there's a limit to how much of a shitter you can be online.

Whatcouldgowrong.jiff Exactly, it seems minor now but it will expand and it will push the Overton window further to normalize monitoring of online video games by government entities in the name of combating crime/hate. It happened in China, it’s happening in Europe and it will happen to the United States.

For now, but it will get worse especially if you live in a commonwealth country that sends cops after people for politically incorrect speech. That sucks and rarely do the people who organize those attacks get punished. That being said, I don’t think it’s worth sacrificing more of the internet to. Likewise as above, still not worth sacrificing more of the internet and I got doxxed myself. I respect your viewpoint but I would rather have the untamed internet than have an electronic nanny looking over my shoulder, especially in video games which are one of the last places of true escapism.

The lengths people will go to. People were even speculating how to spot DDOSers in matches, you'd have to look up their history and see a huge number of wins with a very low kill count. Don't know if it's still a thing though. Apparently there was DDOS protection coming, who knows.

Their CEO is super butthurt about Sony. To be honest, I wish both sides would settle this with a knife fight because all this politicking is embarrassing.

Yeah it sounds like the CMA are tryin gt oblock it. Stupid really it's as if they don't want Sony to have serious competition. In my opinion i twould be bette rif the yjust let the deal happen especiall yas Microsoft hav ealready offered concessions and promises t okeep games like COD comin gt oother platforms and even to try t oextend tha tby offering Nintendo a 10 year contract as well. I'm from the UK and Xbox is just as available here as PS's are so I don' tsee how it hurts us even if COD did all of a sudden become an exclusive. Only ones it's potentially hurting is Sony and MS have offerd Soiny a contract as well for when the ytook over so as fa ras I'm concerned Sony only have themselves to blame for saying no to it. Sounds lik ethey'e rallowin gthey'e rstupid dickass fanboys run and mak ethei rcalls fo rthem instead o fthinking for themselves what's best.

Not a big fan of big corporations absorbing other big corporations to make mega corporations because they were only making a lot of profit and not ALL the profit. Would like the regulators to actually apply this rule consistently (looking at you Disney) rather than just Microsoft though

Then break up Apple into three entities. Google should divest or be smithereened. Meta same. And so on. ... Then we can go after international monstrosities like Embracer. ... But we should start with the absolute crown turd of the planet - International Business Machines.

Since I have a rage-boner for the topic, let's dip into this one a little further, since it goes after something I roasted previously and correctly predicted the demise of from day one, and further illustrates why the MS/ActiBlizz is dead in the water and will never come to pass.
Read the article... the market share is shocking. That isn't ok, and is by definition a monopoly already.

The problem is just being a monopoly isn't illegal either so going by the argument of size alone won't stand up. There has to be something that indicates damaging competition in the market and why everyone is so focused on Call of Duty because it is the only real avenue they have to try and stop it. Frankly I can see Microsoft relenting and selling off Call of Duty and keeping everything else for otherwise they would be losing $3 billion. I first see them taking every route they can to appeal any organization to prevent it as well. Otherwise plenty of other companies out there are in deep trouble and I can see them going to work behind the scenes to help Microsoft so they aren't the next company in the crosshairs. (see Nestle)

Yup, monopoly indeed. But what exactly is the segment? As a graybeard, (or ass-beard), who is a dedicated pc kb+m user, who has never touched a PlayStation, Xbox or even a controller for that matter, much less purchased any "game pass" or whatever money sucking thing they need, is cloud gaming those things? Or is it using some shitty little controller-with-a-screen type device hooked up to some companies server? Or is that "mobile gaming"? Still, whatever the definition is, that's a damm monopoly, and if IBM is the crown turd, then Microsoft has to be of the same lineage..

For I agree it shouldn't happen, but I am expecting to happen because regulations and such are written in a way to protect company's and ignore the consumers. Just going by what happened with Ticketmaster the government could have stepped in much sooner with what they were doing for in my opinion it was vastly more damaging to competition then what ABK being bought by MSFT would. It only finally got attention when Taylor Swift made international news when the system broke the way it did, but my understanding it wasn't the first time this happened just the first time at that scale.
