I crafted for Conquest on 6 toons and did 1 GSF match where I got 4471 requisition. Then I played ME3MP.

Grinding will kill the game for me. I play several toons in different activities, depending what I feel like fun. Like yesterday I ended up doing loads of GSF on 3 alts, swapping sides and going in different ships. The day before I had a very fun Warzone streak on a 4th toon. I have no idea what I will do tonight. Maybe some stories with different alts.
Hmmm...No wonder my highest rank is 77. However I do have a 73, a 50 and a few at 15-30 Rank range.

I did do stuff in the game yesterday on my main character. She has my highest GC. Went from 29 to 34. The cxp gain is so nice. I may try to actually work on leveling it on a few of my characters now.

I might actually log in and try to do something on my main with the CXP gain. She is level...11 maybe? You can see how much I don't care about gear. Or end-game activities.

I doubt I've broken into double digit CG ranks on any of my charactes. Maybe my op because FPs. That's how little I care about their hamster wheel. I look forward to slapping on my full set of XP armor, XP boost and guild boost and see how fast I rocket a new character up the levels though

I did some CXP farming alright (finished Chapter 16 of KotFE and some Heroics) - now reached CR 20 (YAY. WOW ) on my main. then I reopened my Nar Shadaa stronghold (told you, I switched servers with 7 toons) and decorated. It will be my mount-stronghold Aratech-room, Roche-room, Hyrotii-room, Creature-room with vines and plants, Walkhar-, Tobus-, Rendilii-, Meirm-, Longspur-, Dasta-collection... will level some of my other toons to 70 and continue with my last unplayed class story (Trooper)

I'm stuck with my mom's desktop for now so I'm not really playing until I get a new laptop. I became Preferred Status earlier this month and noticed they've updated the active F2P character slots limit (28 for 5.0 Preferred Status). Now that Galactic Command is off limits, I could go back to hoarding credits as usual without worrying about wasting daily planetary heroics cxp. Honestly, I don't miss GC at all. Its like plain F2P but in reverse.... you have to pay to access a grindier levelling tier. Might resub once 5.2 hits (let me dump Quinn properly!). For now, I'm working on three writing projects : continuation to my Shepard-Kaidan fanfic, Arcann-Wrath fanfic and a futuristic-speculative fiction about domestic androids, unsolved murder, drama and data protection issues. First two are fun leisurely occasional smutty stuff, the later was work stuff. This laggy Potato PC does wonders for my muse.

You have to pay to be able to grind. It seems like I have to play literally 1000 pvp matches to get a complete set of gear, unless I get lucky with the RNG drops. I'll be reverting to preferred shortly, I'm keen to see if my weekly passes will still work, but other than maybe levelling 1 of each class to 70 and the weekly pvp/gsf I have pretty much moved on already.

I don't know how you arrived at that number.
My main is at rank 283 and has a full set of T3 gear. Didn't take all that long and I even got multiple alts to 50+ at the same time. I didn't even play ranked arenas in ~2 months, I just play GSF for an hour or so each day, then do the daily PvP mission. On the weekends I run 2-3 Flashpoints or Uprisings... and that's it. On average I earn about 50 components a day. In fact, I play less warzones than I used to and I'm still seeing a lot of progress. One piece of gear every second day or so.
A friend of mine got to 300 by farming KotFE chapter 1 on Master difficulty over and over again. Now that's grinding... but also highly efficient because you can finish it in under 10min and get 4k+ cxp for it.
Most active players are at 300 (or close to it) already.
What I don't get at all are the complaints about needing to have a subscription. That's how MMOs always have worked. Usually you can't even play the game at all without subscribing and SW:TOR gives away ~80% of the game for free.

SWTOR is a game for casual players. The vast majority of it's player base is casual. Long grind and RNG based gearing is as anti-casual as it can get. Even the hardcore MMOs learned that lesson 15 years ago and changed or died. I haven't played loads of MMOs, but it is usually either 1) a grind system with a clear reward at the end or 2) RNG system with minimal impact between the gear gaps. SWTOR actually combining both systems and creating huge gear gap between the different gear Tiers is so mind boggling that it's not even remotely funny (or fun).
Casuals do not like to grind. They are usually kinda ok on RNG. However Bioware takes the RNG to a whole new level as well. So far I have opened over 300 crates on 5 toons total. I can even tell you how many set pieces of gear I got - 11. Five of them are gloves that are duplicates of each other. Two are the same head piece. So I actually got 6 unique armor pieces from little over 300 crates. One piece from 50 crates average. And I hear I am actually lucky compared to other players. Yes, the 5.1 change makes it a little better, but think about the fact that Bioware was fully intending of not changing the GC system at all. Then they started bleeding subs like it's going out of fashion. Full out panic mode and suddenly we got a change to the "perfect" new system and a 250 % boost that will last for months. And it is still not enough, no matter what Ben "It's exciting" Irving may try to sell you. And Bioware still haven't learned their lesson since Tier 4 and Tier 5 gear and new command ranks are coming in April. I wonder what is happening in the developers little heads - "hey, I got a great idea. Let's fix the grind and RNG issues by introducing even more grind and RNG".
Mind you, I think the concept of the GC system is great. Doing whatever you like and having the chance to get the best gear in the game is a great incentive for every player. But the execution of that idea is severely lacking right now. It is especially terrible for PvP where the gear gap can only get worse and new players will be farmed for a long time just because of the gear difference. A great fix was bolstering everyone to 250 rating, but Bioware really doesn't want that, do they? Who will buy the CXP boosts from the Cartel market then? GSF is not affected at all and in fact is actually revitalized by the GC. PvE is so-so in my opinion and probably the negatives of the GC system affect it less compared to PvP, even though I think many players have a point in asking for the old gearing system to be returned as an option along with GC.
You say an average of 50 components a day? That is at about hour and a half of GSF games if you win them all. About 3-4 hours if you are at the losing side. Same for PvP - at least two and a half hours if you win everything and don't get Arenas. However the majority of the casual players do not log in every day and they don't play more than 3-4 hours per session. And what about people who dislike GSF or PvP and can't get components? The current Ops token drop system is a joke. So it is no wonder that most people I end up playing with are undergeared and have a hard time reaching Tier 2. Those people are the main customer base of the game and the GC system is clearly not aimed toward them. Why is anyone surprised by the complaints then? I am a bit more active than the average SWTOR player and I can cope with the new system but it does feel less fun than it used to so I actually play less than before and even think of canceling my second subscription like I did with the first. Daemion looks more active than me and is fine with the system. But we are the minority. And you have to take into account that even players at rank 300 complain about the GC. That should tell you something. When both casuals and hardcore grinders tell you it's screwed up it takes only a Ben Irving to find it "exciting".
As for the subscription issue - it is more about comparing it to the other existing MMO models. For example in Korean MMOs you either grind or pay up in order not to grind. Bioware on the other hand realized that they can merge both ways and force people to pay in order to grind. I imagine Ben Irving patting himself on the back and wondering why nobody thought of it before... Well, Ben, did the subscription cancellations answer the question?

I played 1.5 hours just now. Rank is 294, I've gotten four new T3 schematics.
I'd say playing 1-2 hours a day is rather casual. *shrugs*
Gear doesn't matter for story mode, you get a bolster there. Warzones bolster up to 232, which is enough to compete. If you want to do veteran/master content, then you need proper gear... but even that isn't that difficult. I ran two ops with a tank geared with 230, worked out fine.
It's not even primetime yet and the server is packed. Queues are popping within a minute (even for GSF), so the game isn't quite dead yet.
Is the GC gearing system flawed? Hell yes it is. But it's not that bad at the moment and you progress nicely. Seriously, winning a GSF match is basically one rank up if you're T1/T2.
You can craft endgame gear. Sure, it won't have a set bonus and you won't get 242... but 240 is enough for everything. You can gear up your alts that way. Oh and you can now send the cxp packs from FPs, Uprisings and Ops to your alts. It's still far from perfect but I can gear up my alts while playing my main.
And I play less than I used to. I don't have to do more than dailies really.

Usually you can't even play the game at all without subscribing and SW:TOR gives away ~80% of the game for free. Except for the ones that don't (i.e. GW2). And a history of crap is no reason to go on repeating it. I've always despised the subscription model, I merely tolerate it for this game and even then, it's probably better if I don't think of how much money I've sunk into it, which is probably more than any other game I've ever played put together.

I have gotten 2 set pieces on my main so far and I'm at gc 42 (?). It's still taking me forever because I just don't want to get on and spend all my time grinding up Nayelii, I want to play for fun. These days I only get to play 3 - 4 nights a week for a couple hours before I'm tired of replaying chapters or doing planetary heroics. I will fall behind in gc level but if I keep having good luck with set pieces I'll be okay Edit: I finished Deus Ex: HR so I might play SWtOR tonight for a bit!

If you want to earn cxp, rank up and get endgame gear, then you need to do Uprisings, Flashpoints, Operations, PvP, GSF or KotFE/ET chapters. Doing anything else is highly inefficient. Most of these a group activities but you can always run easy flashpoints solo (veteran Black Talon/Esseles for example) and chapters are solo by design. Still I see people running heroics for cxp and then complaining about the slow progress. Heroics are the worst option, since the cxp/time factor is low and you get neither crafting materials nor components from them.
But then... you don't need endgame for heroics and story content. You don't need to have the best of the best unless you want to do ranked PvP or NiM Operations.
All my alts have 4 set pieces at most (some only 1-2), rest is crafted stuff. Highest GC rank is 58. They are all perfectly viable to play in all content except ranked/NiM and I didn't put more than a few hours into gearing them.
Today I got rank 300 on my main (after 1 hour of GSF) and almost hit the command token limit. Since I have full T3 gear, from now on I'm going to send all cxp packs I earn from Uprisings, Flashpoints and Operations to my alts, so they can rank up.
You even have the option of simply buying whatever you need on GTN, up to 240.
The only reason I even bothered getting to 300 is because this gets me the T3 schematics... and should BioWare ever release T4 and T5 gear, then I can start working on T4 immediately.
I'm going to take my time with my alts... although I suspect I'll get 10+ ranks each evening until they finally hit T2.

I'll get there when I get there, I'm not going to kill myself trying to level it and I'm going to do what I enjoy in the game. Personally though I feel they took a simple way to gear and turned it into some twisted, convoluted thing it didn't need to be. But hey, I'm sure that made the hardcores happy, and that's what matters!

What about HM FPs? I liked doing those in 4.0 but haven't dared this cycle, since I've felt a noticeable loss in heals output in even tacticals. Kind of makes sense, since in 4.0 I was at least starter endgame geared (unoptimized since it was crystal gear) and on my op I was mid tier crystal. I'd expect at least that level to be obtainable at the same rate it was before, but under this system, I just don't see how it can be.
It's crap anyway you slice it. Put the set bonus BIS stuff on an RNG treadmill if you must (still bullshit) but at least leave the basic unoptimized stuff for direct purchase. Who asked for this? That's the million dollar question they'll never answer.

Of course that system is crap... but with the 350% CP bonus right now it's somewhat workable. That being said, my alts don't have gear with full set bonus (2 pieces on average) and it makes little difference. I can still run HM Ops and FPs with them. Crafted 234/240 gear is enough for everything but NiM and ranked. Well, you can still play ranked with it, but... should you lose, people will blame your gear. Seriously, it's about progress, not about instant reward. It takes 2-3 hours per char to get T3 gear ready, provided you either have the money or materials necessary. If you can craft yourself (like I do), it's really fast and easy. And no, I don't play much. From Friday till now I played about 5 hours in total. Mostly just the daily GSF and warzone missions. That's it. You don't heal less now, in fact... you heal more since you gained five levels and your stats improved... but the percentage went down because your gear didn't keep up. What used to be an instant 30% heal is now only restoring 20%. Keep doing Flashpoints and Uprisings, try getting into GSF (I earn 4134 cxp each match there, ~2k if I lose) and you'll quickly have the gear you want. The components system they tacked on is tedious and I only got 3 or 4 pieces through that... but it does speed things up somewhat, too. I hope they'll change a few things about Galactic Command but at the moment I can live with it. It doesn't make me happy, but I can make it work for me.

Did the GSF pick up due to those points? I was just getting into it, and wanted to play it after I leave SWTOR, but the queues were too low to bother with it. When I left it was the only part of SWTOR that was not tied into sub for gearing/access to content. Stil is, or do they now limit your matches per week on GSF too?

GSF queue pops within a minute during primetime. You can play it all day until late into the night, but might have to wait a few minutes in the queue. You won't get any cxp or components if you aren't a subscriber though.

Put the set bonus BIS stuff on an RNG treadmill if you must (still bullshit) but at least leave the basic unoptimized stuff for direct purchase. Who asked for this? That's the million dollar question they'll never answer. exactly - that's what bothers me the most about the new system! yes, as a casual player who doesn't do group content that much I don't need BiS gear, yeah, I get it, whatever BUT prior to 5.0 when I reached lvl 65 (no matter if I was finished with my class story or not) I took the ton of green crystals to the vendor and bought the purple 208 gear and was happy, period. I felt well geared after that ... and yes if I felt like it or had the time and/or materials, I crafted better gear (212/216/220) to feel even more "safe" now with 5.0 - if you are lucky (and you are lvl 66) some gear (the greeen or blue outlander pieces) drops ... but it can be for DD, Tank or heal so it is yet another RNG to gear and yes, I know, the pros and dedicated hardcore or whatever you want to call these know-it-all-arrogant-players will state: "hey you can do story & heroics naked" ... well F*** them! I need at least a little better gear in order to feel safe, so sue me. tl;dr: biggest let down in 5.0 for me: at least the "starter gear" (aka the old crystal-208er) should be easy to obtain and not hidden behind grind/RNG

You can easily craft 228 rated gear, it doesn't require any special materials and is the equivalent to the 208 crystal gear in 4.0.
It's how I got started in 5.0. I took all my crafters to the trainers, learned the new schematics and made a complete 228 set for my main. And then I continually replaced parts and pieces of it as I got stuff from the crates. If you use legacy gear, you can even reuse half of the stuff for the next alt.
Dekibra, since you're on my server now... would you like me to craft you something?

I actually did craft the 228 starter gear for my lvl 66/70s (4 so far) ... I was complaining rather in general for you MUST have a crafter among your toons in order to get that starter gear (or buy it of the GTN) And I realized that I am not that skilled for certain content (tried a "normal" (aka veteran) Star Fortress with my lvl 70 JK - who was lucky enough to get 3 T1 set bonus pieces so far, so is geared with crafted 228/set bonus 230) - oh well in the end I managed to kill that blasted Exarch whatever her name was but it was not fun, took forever and the reward was horrible) meaning: YES I'd very much like to have better crafted gear for her or rather my unlucky Jedi Sage who has a higher GC rank but NO set bonus, just crafted 228/230just tell me what materials you need and I'll send them to you At least I started to "farm" the Black Talon/Esseles for refined isto-dingens stabilizers EDIT: a question comes to mind: do you actually have to be Tier 2 (or 3 for that matter) in order to wear crafted gear that is >230?

GSF queue pops within a minute during primetime. You can play it all day until late into the night, but might have to wait a few minutes in the queue. You won't get any cxp or components if you aren't a subscriber though. I am not playing SWTOR any more so I do not need 'land' gear. The GSF is still handled the same, right? Separate gearing and no restriction on the preferred save for less of a reward per match/no double space comms for using different ships?
