Not really, since there are massive gaps of centuries or more in the EU timeline. That's the entire conceit for how they can introduce things in TOR like the Galactic Cold War, as well as the Eternal Empire showing up to wreck the Republic and Sith Empire. With that in mind, the writers could still easily fit in the Empire conquering the Republic, even if only for a relatively short period of time, before it either collapses or the former Republic worlds rise up to take back control again. That's not to say that it did happen, only that we cannot take the Republic's word of being "undefeated champions" as gospel, given the huge spans of time involved. Especially when you recall how the backstory of TOR has the Sith Empire effectively "win" the conflict with the Republic, having sacked Coruscant, destroyed the Jedi temple and strong-armed the Republic Senate into signing a peace treaty that heavily favoured the Empire. As for Darth Bane, he still lived over 2000 years after these events. Shortly before him, there was Darth Rivan, who took his name from a Sith manuscript typo. It seems that certain details of galactic history don't always survive the passage of time, either getting corrupted or lost. We even see this on a shorter scale of time, where despite having a huge impact on the galaxy, many Jedi or Sith by the time of TOR (only 300 years later) haven't heard of Revan or Malak. Nor has knowledge of the Rakata become widespread despite their rediscovery in KOTOR, with many individuals dismissing the idea of an "Infinite Empire" as ludicrous. Obviously the Republic always prevails, but I like the idea that there's some wiggle room for them to have briefly been occupied by the Empire, even if not fully. Then again, it might be redundant now this plot has already been done with the Eternal Empire during KOTFE. This isn't an argument for a lore-coherent "Sith Empire becomes Republic" fan theory, it's an argument in favor of Legends' total lore incoherence. Like, look at the stuff you pulled up. There's the Rakata Infinite Empire, whose history apparently ceased to exist until rediscovered in the Jedi Civil War...except that there are other Legends in-universe sources that explicitly place the existence of Rakata, and throwing off the Rakata's chains, in the ancient foundational story of the Galactic Republic. There's "people not knowing who Revan and Malak are in SWTOR", which is a transparent attempt by the writers to introduce people who didn't play KotOR to BioWare's pet characters, rather than some kind of commentary on galactic education. (One might say that Drew Karpyshyn is the one in need of education, given his admitted total lack of understanding of the Jedi Exile character and the hatchet-job that he and Hall Hood did on her in Revan and the Jedi Prisoner arc. KotOR II came out less than ten years before he worked on SWTOR.) There's Darth Rivan, who exists solely because Wizards of the Coast and BioWare didn't talk to each other about their stories and made characters with unintentionally similar names; the misspelling/confusion story was made up by Peña in one of his many lore patch-up-job articles to try and resolve that issue. There's the fact that apparently nobody in the OT knows anything about the PT despite the fact that it was within living memory for most of the galaxy, which is because the OT and the OT-associated Legends stuff came out before the PT did, not because of some shockingly effective Imperial mind-erasure scheme. The whole backstory for SWTOR doesn't pass the smell test in terms of lore. I mean, the war - where a tiny-ass pocket kingdom in the resource-starved, poorly-populated non-industrialized Outer Rim suddenly conquers half the galaxy in a Thirty Years' War of attrition with the people who control the fucking Core - straight-up makes no sense. The existence of a Sith Empire that happens to be a near-clone of the Galactic Empire from 3,600 years in the future makes no sense. These are design decisions taken without serious reference to the existing storyline, or to any semi-plausible understanding of history. Which is why I actually agree with you. The SWTOR devs very well could have the Sith Empire (or the new, post-KotET Alliance, or whateverthefuck) replace the Republic, do a rename job, and convince everybody to pretend that none of that shit ever happened and that we have always been at war with Eastasia. But the explanation wouldn't have anything to do with the existing history of the Legends continuity, most of which militates fairly strongly, if not explicitly contradicts, that sort of plot. It would be because the SWTOR devs can mostly write whatever they want into their game, for whatever reason.

Update on the roadmap and 5.2.2: Hey everyone,
Wanted to provide an update on my first Producer Roadmap, but getting it published is taking longer than I anticipated. Partly my own fault, as my Dad came to visit and I took a few days off over the past couple of weeks to spend time with him. This ultimately slowed my progress but I am back in full swing now and pushing to get the roadmap completed.
I honestly thought I would have had the roadmap done and communicated already, but, I realistically need more time to finalize it. Translated: That means end of this month, but with full intention of delivering it sooner. <sad face> This is not something I wanted to tell you, but I promised to keep you up-to-date on what’s happening.
While you continue to wait, here’s a few highlights of Game Update 5.2.2 scheduled for mid-June (yes, in 2017):
The Nar Shaddaa Nightlife event returns with old and some awesome new rewards New Character Perks to increase your speeder piloting speed to 120% and 130% Companions will gain influence through standard crew skill missions Full Tier 1 gear available from existing Fleet vendors using Command Tokens – this means you can obtain a full bonus gear set for under 800 Command Tokens. You will be able to choose the type of gear you want to purchase (DPS, Tank, or Healer). We made a variety of changes to Galactic Starfighter – primarily aimed at reducing the cost, increasing requisition rewards, and offering all players a Gunship and Bomber as standard ships (available in your hangar).
I will continue to pass on roadmap updates as I have them. We do have an exciting year ahead of us and I look forward to sharing it you.

For me, those two are the best parts of it all. The GSF stuff is good for players new to it.

I guess the influence through crew skills will be handy too. All this time and I only have one level 50 rank companion and that is my warriors Pierce. He is a beast.

Had a ton of 40s across all characters, though, because I'm not very bright and used all the royalties from dealing mats to buy comp gifts.

Been admiring a lot of my recent swtor screenshots.. arcann is even more beautiful on ultra.... sigh.. never notice his Sith eyes is tinged with blue..

Thinking of jumping back in for a bit. Haven't done any "War for Iokath" stuff yet, but I think maybe I'll start over. The story is getting a bit too far out even for Star Wars. I've just made a dual wielding knight. I'll see how long she can keep my interest:

Also never seen a Sent with dual training swords actually on their backs lol. I guess it happens all the time now that base classes are gone.

There's a new hair-collection on the cartel market. Think it was 250 cc. I had 4k+ from having an authenticator (keeps collecting them coins even when not playing) so I grabbed the hairstyles and Satele's outfit. Edit: Here's a better look:

Looks like they're trying to give everyone a little something in the upcoming months. SWtOR Roadmap News Articles 05.31.2017 Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ - Road Map 2017
Hi everyone,
Our Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ Team has been very busy reviewing all the areas of the game and has built a vision that we are eager to share with you in this Roadmap. We gathered suggestions directly from our players and influencers, gained insights from comments on our forums and those of our fan sites, and received lots of feedback from conversations at our Cantina events!
This SWTOR Roadmap offers insight into our direction for the game starting with our 'Summer of SWTOR' activities beginning June 13, 2017. Plus, the Roadmap covers all our plans including what areas of the game we are focusing on, areas targeted for quality of life improvements, and plans for overall gameplay changes.
I have included a section about Communication and how we plan to keep you informed throughout the year. We will unquestionably keep some things out of the spotlight and we may not go into great depth about a change until we are ready to discuss it, but I’m hopeful you’ll enjoy our increased communication.
So, what’s next and what can you expect from SWTOR in the coming months? Where are we headed longer term, and how do we address the myriad of questions everyone wants answered?
GAMEPLAY DIRECTION
We have been saying for a while now our focus this year is to return to massively multiplayer and group-based content. Since the launch of Knights of the Eternal Throne (KOTET) we have already delivered a new daily area, a new Operation Boss (Tyth, the God of Rage), and the return of two companions. Our focus on gameplay improvements will continue throughout this year and will include revisiting existing game systems to provide enhancements where needed whenever possible.
OPERATIONS
It’s been far too long since we provided you with extremely challenging multi-player activities. We all know our Operations (8 to 16-player PvE boss fights) are a favorite pastime for Guilds, are the fastest way to gear up, and when done properly, cause all of us to keep showing up every week until we can place that Boss on farm status!
Delivering an Operation is a fundamental change in our direction this year and our plan is to provide you with a new Boss encounter every few months. By doing it this way, we can deliver high quality, challenging Boss fights much faster than making you wait until the end of the year or for an expansion.
Some of you are already fighting Esne and Aivela on our Public Test Server (PTS) and the feedback has really been excellent. We’re looking forward to July when you can fight these two sisters.
We’ve already changed how our level or ‘Tier’ gear drops in Operations, now we’ll be adding a platinum quality item you can earn from defeating certain bosses in Veteran and Master modes (our two more challenging modes vs. Story mode). In an upcoming post, we’ll let you know which bosses drop rewards and what items you will have a chance to earn.
PLAYER VERSUS PLAYER (PVP)
We introduced two new PvP Warzones last year and plan to continue improving PvP by adding fun activities throughout the year. Season 8, our current season in progress, is slated to end in August in conjunction with Crisis on Umbara (Game Update 5.4) - we’re finalizing all the rewards now. We’ll provide an update on all the rewards in an upcoming forum post.
We know Class balance is a hot topic for our PvP community and the Combat team is hard at work building a plan for future balance changes. We will begin rolling out the changes with Sisters of Carnage (Game Update 5.3) in July and will continue monthly updates until we’re satisfied with all the adjustments. I’m confident you’ll let us know your opinions after each update, too.
We are reviewing ways to improve use of your wide range of characters, and one of our top priorities is to make Unassembled Components a Legacy currency. This allows you to play with any of your alternate characters while gaining benefits across your entire Legacy.
The remainder of the year includes a new Warzone, Galactic Starfighter (our space PvP gameplay expansion) changes, changes to Ranked PvP, earlier notification of Season 9 rewards, and continued review/adjustment of class balances.
STORY AND COMPANIONS
We will continue moving the story forward after the events on Iokath. As we announced at our recent Cantina in Orlando during Star Wars™ Celebration 2017, the next major story update is coming in August with Crisis on Umbara featuring an exciting new Flashpoint on the shadowy planet. We won’t give you spoilers about this new area, but we’ll reveal more as we get closer to general release.
We know bringing back your old Companions is extremely important so expect to see more of them returning throughout the year. Additionally, as we release updates over the summer, you’ll be able to customize some of your favorite companions, including Theron, Lana, Shae, Koth, and Senya! In addition, we’ll review and adjust which companions you received through Alliance Alerts.
We will continue to provide regular improvements for companions this year to enable you to increase their influence by doing in-game tasks you typically do when you play. Companions remain an important part of SWTOR and we look forward to introducing improved ways for you to engage with them.
In addition, based on the feedback we received about Iokath, we are exploring options for new Daily areas, adding or updating events, and offering special rewards for a variety of in-game activities.
QUALITY OF LIFE
Quality of Life (QoL) is a term regularly used to reference improvements we make to improve your gameplay experience. QoL improvements include fixing long standing bugs, changes to existing game systems, improvements to the User Interface, simplifying ways to do things in-game, increasing the speed of mounts, adding Legacy Perks, and more.
We will regularly look to offer more customization improvements such as adding Weapon Tuning enhancements to player collections, and we will continue to seek your feedback on other customization options you would like to see!
SUMMER OF SWTOR
The following is our planned Summer of SWTOR 2017 Game Updates along with highlights of what is included with each release:
NAR SHADDAA SUMMER - GAME UPDATE 5.2.2 – JUNE 13TH
The return of the Nar Shaddaa Nightlife event with all new rewards, including a new Gamorrean Companion! CRISIS ON UMBARA - GAME UPDATE 5.4 – AUGUST

PLAYER COMMUNICATION
We want to improve our cadence of releasing information to you. It is important to us that you know your opinions count and you have a serious stake in whatever changes we make to the game. To do this, we must chat with you on a regular basis and with a specific focus in mind – that’s our plan.
Starting this week and weekly thereafter throughout June and July, we are going to be posting on the forums to share specific features we’re thinking about and those already in-process. We want to get your input and talk through the pros and cons of each topic to see how you feel. We’ll set expectations for how we want to interact to keep our engagement productive, but if we all do this correctly, it’ll be a fun and rewarding experience.
We will be posting on a very wide range of topics, everything from new content to the reinvigoration of existing features. Look out for these posts every Wednesday (if that changes, we’ll let you know in advance).
And of course, I will plan to deliver an updated roadmap each quarter. This way you can see not only the direction we are heading, but you’ll know what to expect specifically over the few months.
I look forward to our continued discussions!
Respectfully,
---Keith

Thanks for posting, I hadn't seen this yet! I hope when they say "Continue the story...", they don't mean entirely in operations. I know this is a MMO, but I greatly prefer playing it solo, which has never been a problem before. I don't want to see them swing too heavily back in the other direction. That being said, I am happy for those that have wanted new Ops/Pvp are FINALLY getting it. It's been way too long. The story though, I want to be able to follow along with that without missing too much of it due to multiplayer elements. That's the reason WoW lost my sub this year after a decade, I felt like I had to do the group stuff to get anywhere. I'm just not at a point in my life where I can sit for hours uninterrupted to play. Kids, husband, cats...everyone always needs something. SO glad they are bringing Nightlife event back. I had a lot of fun with it the last time. Companion customization after all this time? Heck yes. New stronghold? Woo. If they follow through on all of this (and do it well) maybe it bring people back to the game.

I don't want to see them swing too heavily back in the other direction. That being said, I am happy for those that have wanted new Ops/Pvp are FINALLY getting it. I feel mostly the same, maybe a little less sympathy for the PvP crowd, because there's a little vindictive voice in me that thinks the PvP Players are the worst aspect of playing PvP in the first place, but still. I ended my sub recently after trying Iokath and discovering that finishing the story arc there requires at least starting the Operation (something that was promised before release not to be the case), and that left a really sour taste in my mouth, given most of my other alts are parked somewhere in the 50-55 story because I'm one of those crazy "RP" people who doesn't like to do the story out of order, and thus have everyone "waiting" on Dread Master runs that never happen and/or never succeed. Still, I'm just curious enough as to where the story goes, and while the "roadmap" didn't really state anything clearly, I remain optimistic that maybe in a few months, once the "MMO" crowd gets their time, the new leadership will convince the "RP" group to come back, too.

While I am glad to see an increase in the communication from Bioware, I must say, those are some really lackluster updates on the horizon. Iokath was boring and weak and what we have to look forward to until the end of the year are a snippet of an Operation (which I don't bother with) and a single Flashpoint. Oh, and get this - bugfixes, class balancing and QoL improvements, all of which should be an ongoing nonstop updates which are released at least monthly if not every other week, but no, apparently they are something we are supposed to look forward to. So far I see no indication that the game is moving out of the maintenance mode it has been in for the past couple of years.
Some might say - it's the updates only until August, but we all know it is until August because the developers have absolutely no clue what they can give us beyond that point. Be it because of budget reasons, lay offs or whatever.
SWTOR is easily my favorite MMO and it pains me to see how it has been managed lately. At least the crew is trying to do some damage control after Ben "The Rat" Irwing tried his best to sink the ship. The 1-50 lvl story experience is still great, GSF is fun if somewhat abandoned, running random Flashpoints is like throwing dice to see what people you end up with. I must admit I am having more fun when I end being grouped with complete idiots just to watch their hilarious stupidity and overblown egos ("hey, Mercenary, stop using taunts when I am tanking on my Marauder. I got four level 90 toons, I know what I am doing."). I know, it's a guilty pleasure. PvP is pretty much dead to me and I used to love it in the 1.0-2.0 era, then like it more or less till 4.0 and mostly avoiding it like a plague since then. One of the greatest PvP maps I have ever seen - the classic Huttball - is now completely broken, Ranked and even Regular games are filled with hackers, trolls and wintraders, healing output is out of control, etc, etc. Many of those issues should not be a problem if there wasn't just one team trying to cover every single aspect of the game.

I am going to give the new guy a shot at steering the ship before I declare it a loss. You are absolutely right though, in that Iokath was pretty bad. They need to step things up in that regard to have any chance. Class balance has been a huge complaint of PvPers for a long time now. Hopefully any changes they make won't affect PvE though. That never ends well.

I have 0 interest in the PvP stuff. I've never PvP'd in SWtOR and I don't see myself doing it ever. I very, very rarely do Ops and only slightly more often do Flashpoints or Uprisings.
I'm more interested in the story and the companions. I'm glad to see the Pvp/Ops/FP ppl get some content though so maybe there will be more people on, I just have no interest in them. And I'm kinda mad that it appears part of the story is going to be happening in the Ops like it did for the Dread Masters. The chances I will get to see that in person are only slightly more than nill.
I do like the way the new guy seems to be handling things so far and I'm hoping and keeping my fingers crossed that he can breathe new life into the game.
The roadmap only goes until August because he said he will post them quarterly.

I got myself 30 days of gametime to give it a try. I don't think I'll make it my main MMO (I'm too deep into WoW for that), but it seems pretty good so far, bar a few nitpicks. I have an imperial bounty hunter right now, and will likely make some kind of dark side user as my next character, probably a Sith juggernaut.

Although purely for combat gameplay, Rage Jugg is pretty fun. Throw and leap and one-two crit combos everywhere. Though if it's good story you want, play agent. Perferrably operative. Preferrably female. Dat Jo Wyatt
