Every time I play the game and get to Ilos, I think to myself: are those statues Protheans? Or some other race that came before them? They don't look like the Protheans a.k.a. Javik later on.
Is their point to be a mystery?

The Inusannon, a race from an earlier cycle. According to the wiki, it was their ruins that helped the Protheans develop mass effect technology. It's the same as when humanity found Prothean ruins on Mars and used it for the same purpose.

I love this ancient lore stuff. Clearly there are a ton of races before the Protheans in previous cycles.

That info specifically comes from Javik. IIRC he mentions it during one of the early conversations onboard the Normandy.

My own hunch about the statues is that they were originally intended to be representations of Protheans since they are similar to the figures we see under attack during Shepard's vision from the beacon. Somewhere along the way, a decision was made to not go with the original design but to instead change their appearance... so we got Javik complete with an explanation regarding the Inusannon in ME3.

Yeah I'd say they were retconned in, which is fine. All those tentacles look bizarre and would have been a pain to animate.
Before ME2 was released, the wiki showed those statues , tentacles and all, looking like husks, under the Prothean description. In fact, I'm pretty sure the in game codex shows them as such in ME1. The wiki has since been modified to claim they were 'Insuannon' all along.
It's similar to what they did with Qunari in Dragon Age. Once they managed to figure out how to represent how they intended Qunari to look, they retconned Sten to being a special hornless version of the race, etc.

As well as the qunari he traveled with in DAO since we see them when we take sten into the fade with us at the mage tower. Those qunari were hornless as well. I am not disagreing with you I am just pointing it out.

The look was retconned in DA2.

I always get him early...well except when I wanted to hear what kaiden, ash, and tali say on that mission.

That BioWare has a fetish for Japanese tentacle monster porn?
It would certainly explain Liara's nerdy schoolgirl personality in ME1...

I feel like the devs really missed how much sense this makes. I suppose it could have worked differently had From Ashes been part of the base game rather than DLC. Could have been first stop after Mars (or even instead of Mars) where Javik is found. Could have even worked to have Liara found there and at this point A/K is injured and sent to the Citadel for care.
I can't help spinning out ideas like this. It's a character flaw.

Yeah I thought they were Protheans when I played ME1 too. I agree that it is plausible that they were supposed to be Protheans originally, then the design was changed when they made the Collectors in ME2 .

If I had to guess, the Inusannon look was probably going to be too weird to use in gameplay. Doubly so with Javik.

Though that changed with the retconned vision in ME2 (forgot the planet, during one of the Blue Suns side missions). There the statue images where replaced by Collectors / Collector like creatures.

The images in the visions from the beacon look very similar to the statues. Yes because they didn't have any idea what Protheans looked like. They were like the Forerunners in the Halo games up until Halo 4. Very little solid information and no idea of their physical looks, just slight tid bits of information and artifacts of super advanced technology. And when Mass Effect 2 was in development the revelation that the Collectors were Protheans was a late in development change. Because the Collectors were Protheans when designing Javik they had to use the Protheans as a general base model to start with.
The whole development of the Protheans both visually and lore wise with this trilogy was kind of a cluster fuck.

You know what's sad? Uninstall "From Ashes", do an AutoTOC with ME3Explorer and play that mission again.
The dialogs are very, very good too.
What a waste of resources Bioware.

Since I'm probably not going to do all that, what's different? Does it open up a non-Javik slot with interesting dialogue?

Every single squadmate start to questioning Liara, stating what they are seeing is not much 'asari', but another race. With From Ashes installed they simply say the artifacts look "prothean".
Her replies on the other hand are much more disconcerning.
And after activating the beacon, Shepard reaction is much more crude when accusing the asari to hold technology that could've helped the war.

As it should be. It's a complaint I've had, never mind that it's illegal to withhold Prothean tech.
