So either it was an ancient elven thing I don't think it was ancient elven thing, considering all elves in Temple of Mythal have their feet covered.

I don't think it was ancient elven thing, considering all elves in Temple of Mythal have their feet covered. Ah then may be it is just the slaves who had bare feet. Instead the sentinels all had bald heads. As I've said, someone must have had this strange idea for the elf design in DA2 and for some reason they went for it with all elves at that time. With any luck it will be forgotten about for DA4.

Fenris has nothing with dalish...only their bare foot... Like I say, they did it with all the elves, not just the Dalish, which was weird. Actually I could understand Denarius making him go barefoot, perhaps to emphasise he is his "little wolf" or to degrade him in some other way but that would be all the more reason for him to wear shoes when he could. The reason I mentioned it as some Dalish custom, perhaps based on some pictures they had seen or something, is that Felassan is also said to go barefoot in Masked Empire, unlike Briala who is properly attired as the Empress's servant. So either it was an ancient elven thing (Solas goes barefoot too when we first meet him) or he went like that to blend in with the Dalish he was mixing with. I would imagine that most slaves working for wealthy Altus would have proper foot attire because their owners would see it as a status symbol to have their slaves properly clothed, thus distinguishing them from the paupers of the slums even if they are free. So I really hope we have seen the last of the bare foot elves when we get to Tevinter, even if Solas' followers still insist on being that way. I don't know whose idea it was to come up with that design feature for elves in DA2 because even David Gaider didn't like it but presumably he was out voted on the decision to keep it. Yes. But besides this, I think, it is illogical that Danarius would let his personal bodyguard being unprotected. Suicidal stupidity Okay, perhaps it is exaggeration, but really: Fenris protected his life – and seems, not that much similar –very expensive!– slave exists, I think, logically, his gear is not that scanty: Fenris was valuable to him, even if not as person. Many things about the dalish are stupid enough. The bare foot, that "three mage rule" ... suicidal as well. Yes, I heard about Gaider. Also at first he found Fenris' design weird (like me and many others as well, I'm sure...), but later he got used to...

My admiration for Zevran only increased once they introduced this idea about elves. He had such an admirable attachment to his boots.

Luckily Lavellan gets to wear human designed clothes the majority of the time and that includes decent boots. My admiration for Zevran only increased once they introduced this idea about elves. He had such an admirable attachment to his boots. I want Dalish-styled boots (or at least some sort of enclosing footwrap) back, but Lavellan adamantly refuses to wear any clothing with Chantry-style imagery. Hairy eyeballs begone! ...apart from the early "Inquistion battlemage armour" sold by dear Seggrit perhaps. Lets hope we get some non-andrastian elf designs without clichés like "no shoes" or "all bald" next time. Though now I wonder if hair on (male?) elves is due to veil/lack of magic. Perhaps with even less magic they can grow dwarfy beards?

It wasn't even my doing, I just googled "Solas with beard" and it was first thing to appear At least you can always add to baldness empty canvas. It's harder to shave erase from it

"and I'd choose you; in a hundred lifetimes, in a hundred worlds, in any version of reality. I'd find you and I'd choose you"
And a different Hawke in every panel. Just makes my heart ache. Whatever body Hawke takes, whatever decisions Hawke makes, Fenris will always love and devote himself to Hawke.
It's also almost 4th wall breaking too, like Fenris knows it's his Hawke regardless of how we, the player, have dressed them up this time round.

Is there actually a way to keep Anders alive without having to kill Fenris down the road? I was mildly mortified when I had to cut him down.

Is there actually a way to keep Anders alive without having to kill Fenris down the road? I was mildly mortified when I had to cut him down. The easiest way would be to max out Fenris' friendship (or rivalry if that's more your thing). During the climax when you side with the mages he'll say 'this is a mistake, but I won't abandon you' meaning that despite not agreeing with your decision he'll stand by your side
However if his friendship/rivalry isn't maxed but closed to be maxed you can still persuade him to your side at the Gallows (I'm not sure what choice you need but Hawke's dialogue says 'I though freedom from slavery meant something to you')
It's actually fairly easily to max out his friendship even if you're an avid mage supporter. Just be kind to him, but don't patronize him when he speaks of his fear/hatred of mages. And above all DO NOT agree with slavery. During his Act 2 quest it's fine to take on Orana, but state to him you'll give the girl a job, which gives you +10 friendship (in fact this entire quest can give you up to 40 friendship, plus another 20 when he visits you after at the estate) His gift quest can give you +15 friendship and you can still use the flirt option to offer to teach him how to read (honestly this should've been a neutral option) So in total those quests alone can give you 75 friendship points in Act 2 making it possible to max out his friendship before Act 2 even finishes (provided you already had some friendship gained in Act1)
hope this helps

It does, thank you. I somehow managed to get a 50/50 rating with him by the end of the game. I was kind to him but every other decision I made he hated. And I got quite a bit of rivalry points for telling him not to kill his sister. I'll try to keep him alive next time.

And I got quite a bit of rivalry points for telling him not to kill his sister. I'll try to keep him alive next time. I'm an avid Fenris romancer, so I know how to deal with him these days
just avoid taking him on quests he'll disapprove of and take him along on those he does (at least until maxing his friendship/rivalry, after that it doesn't really matter)
for example, during Act 1's Wayward son (Feynriel's quest) you can get 10 friendship points if you kill Danzig, you can get another 10 for killing the other slaver...but it negates if you tell Feynriel to go to the Dalish.
Also during his recruitment quest, if you're a mage you can negate the rivalry points gained to 5 if you pick an option that gives the fewest rivalry points (those being Survival and Find Out, which both give 10 rivalry points) you then take the diplomatic option when asking him why Danarius is after him, which gives +5 friendship.
I can give you a small run down of what I tend to do Bait and Switch (recruitment quest): on a mage use the options given above, as a non mage either don't take a mage with you or use the 'a mage helped you' option which doesn't affect rivalry or friendship, then proceed taking the blue dialogue as above for +5 friendship Fenris recruited: use 'I've thought about it' or 'Lothering is gone' as your first option when Fenris asks about why you remain in Kirkwall next few options don't matter, then use the investigate options > "How long since you escaped?" > "You've been alone?" > "Are you sure?" > "Good plan." and end the quest by saying "You could make a home here" which gives you +20 friendship if not using romance dialogue Wayward son: have him along when dealing with Danzig and then switch him out before you go to the Wounded coast for +10 friendship, or alternatively take him along and send Feynriel to the Circle for another +20 friendship (10 for killing the slaver and another 10 for sending Feynriel to the Circle)
Doing this gives you about 35 to 55 friendship in Act 1 alone (and this can be done as both a mage and non-mage)
In Act 2 doing his personal quests (as I stated in my previous post) can give you 75 friendship points which would effectively lock you into friendship mode for the remainder of the game.
This way you won't even have to go against your Hawke's own morals (especially if they're mage supporters) and still get the grumpy elf's friendship

Hawke doesn't even have to send Feynriel to the Circle, it's avoidable (I never sent him there – especially after what we experienced with Karl, seems the Circle is unsafe to the mages...) – the quest brings many friendship points... so happened, my most radical red blood mage was in 100% friendship with him already in the beginning of the Act3: I started the Act3 with his personal quest, and the first red answer locked his friendship. Usually, it makes efforts in Act3 too – but I think, he just adored my Hawke's behaviour. I speak about Feynriel's quest, because I planned rivalry with him, and I already started it – but this quest showed, the friendship fits their relationship better: maybe Fenris is the only who's able to bear my Hawke's direct (blunt...) personality (besides Anders, who was in love with him, so...). My Hawke didn't even let him kill Danzig – he did it with his own hand... Later, in the tunnel, he risked Feynriel's life before the kidnappers like: "You can try..." Fenris seemed adored the answer as well... After that, I didn't mind, what his opinion about the Dalish path – I saw, he will be friend – I planned it or not... (I love this Hawke he surprised me.) When with my warrior, he was not on 100% until the end (there was rp reason, they didn't easily get along), finally, Fenris offerend his sword to him as well. As I experienced, the rivalry harder with him even as radical pro-mage – if Hawke is pro-freedom, and tries to support him in other questions. The first Act is the harder, as LadyofNemesis said, too: in Act2, Hadriana's quest brings a lot of friendship – this quest is the hard point in rivalry (assuming, Hawke is against the slavery...) He will follow Hawke to defend the mages (listen him – at the beginning of the short video):
bierkrug Only person, who demand to kill Anders otherwise he will leave the group even if Hawke and him in love is Sebastian.
