Squee! that introduction photo though! Fenris is my favorite Dragon Age romance! He is also the main reason I have to Replay Dragon Age 2 occasionally. I still have mixed feeling about the book with him in it being canceled. Mostly still glad at least nothing horrible happened to him because of said book.

Fenris is the best elf in the games! I mean, I love Zevran and Solas too, but... mmmm What kind of Hawke do you prefer to romance him with, and what kind or romance? Mine was a mage F!Hawke that friendmanced him (I am honestly not too fond of his rivalmance, it feels like you are constantly telling him to "get over it"). I liked the poignancy of him finally finding happiness with a mage and thus perhaps somewhat come to terms with his hatred of magic.

Yay, Fenris thread! Along with Solas, he's my favourite broody elf I haven't played DA2 in a long time because it hasn't worked for some reason, but even just thinking about Fenris makes me want to try it and romance him yet again Fenris is the best elf in the games! In my opinion Fenris has gone through quite enough of hate and rivalry with mages already, so letting him be happy for once and actually like, and love, Hawke for real seems so much better option.

Yeah, I feel the exact same way! Not all rivalmances are bad though, from what I have seen on YouTube Merrill's rivalmance actually works nicely, and I did Sebastian's and it wasn't that bad (the fact that his romance overall is pretty lackluster is a completely different matter though).

I think I once tried rivalmance with Anders, and it didn't go too well (if I remember correctly, I thought it was just stupid), so I'm usually sticking with friendmancing. Although, if I can get my DA2 working, I might try again with it... we'll see, maybe I'll rivalmance Fenris one day! And yeah, Sebastian is... Sebastian.

I love Fenris. He's my canon LI for DA2. I always romance him with a snarky male mage Hawke, and I enjoy both his friendship and rivalry paths. "Festis bei umo canavarum!"

I tryed both with pro-mage Hawke, but I found creditable the rival romance, because if a pro-mage Hawke want a friedship romance, s/he need always lie to him, or hiding from him, when he want to save some mages*. I think, the rival relationship with Fenris do not mean hatred, do not mean that Hawke does not understand him, and does not help. The fact that Hawke insists on his principles, does not affect that he will help to Fenris. In Fenris life the most important thing the freedom, and Hawke can agree with him in this goal. However to Hawke also important the freedom of the Magi, but if Fenris do not know this fact (because Hawke lie from it, or do it secretly), Fenris do not get a chance to accept this. If he can not accept, they will not be able to stay together for a long term. The rival path not cruel, just harder but more honest, I think. (At the end this clearly shows.) --- *Certanly the game mechanics allows that easily, but from the roleplaying perspective a bit weird.

Oh, i think you are right, it is just the things they both say in the rival path often come of as cruel... My Hawke never lied about her support of mages, but I admit if I thought I was going to do a mage-heavy quest I did think twice about bringing him along. I do hope in future games companions will gossip more so that companions not present on certain quests can still confront the PC - that way the PC might also get a chance to explain their action.

A lot of people think that it is cruel. "Hawke to break him, because he blames himself at the end" etc., but that's simply not true. He don't blames himself, but no longer blames also the "mages", and rejects hatred.

This would be my first BW romance ever. DA2 was the only BW game I ever played after beta testing SWTOR that year and wanting to play more BW games. Of course Balthier was my fav in FF so hearing Fenris was just a bonus lol
I really enjoyed his romance arc. I know many got turned off by his leaving Hawke after their first night, but instead of cheating on him, I waited for him to return to me and continued being his friend. He was completely worth the wait! Also I don't find him all broody and emo like others who said that's why they won't romance him. I found once he opened up, he was funny, had dry humor and loved to tease!
Anders ended up being the gut-wrenching pain and heart breaking romance that you would have thought Fenris might be lol but then again it's the Mages who break our hearts in DA.

He wants to live, and like to live. He are sad? He have reason, I guess.

Fenris is delicious.
I recently read a fanfic (can't remember the name) where Fenris died of lyrium poisoning. I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried. I've always wondered what the long-term effects of his markings could be - the fanfic touched on the worst possible outcome.
I'm bummed about the cancellation of the book he was supposed to be in, yet tentatively hopeful he'll make an appearance in DA4.

He had a horrible past but he didn't let it control him. He fought for his freedom. He only truly seems to give up if you send him back to Tevinter and I have only seen that on vids. I could never choose that option. You can almost hear his heart being crushed into tiny pieces when Hawke chose that!

It was his wit that actually made me attracted to him in the first place - so smart but also so funny (in a very dry way, a nice contrast to my previous romance with Alistair). I also really love that he can reflect upon his own actions critically, and he always apologizes if he believes himself to have wronged someone.
People complaining that he is "whiny" really have no sympathy for the fact that he has endured horrible abuse - even though he sometimes said hurtful things it was easy to cut him some slack knowing that. I usually don't like killing characters, but killing Danarius was sooooo satisfying!

Fenris, my other favorite elf! I have a thing for voices and in my opinion nothing beats Gideon Emery's voice.... although Gareth David Lloyd is a strong contender.
I can never rivalmance him though, it makes me feel abusive like some hatemance. I loved playing a mage with him; trying to prove to him that not all mages out there are ticking time bombs makes for a really sweet story. I also found I could navigate playing a pro mage without lying to him or sacrificing my ideals but I admit it can get a bit meta gamey. Basically I left him home for very pro mage quests that I knew dropped a lot of points and hated blood magic around him. After a while the friendship slowly built up even though I disagreed with him for most conversations about mages.
Also I'm not sure I want him to appear in dragon age 4; In fact the very thought frightens me. I don't know how I could handle having the choice to kill him off or someone else I liked. I just want him Safe and wrapped up in my Hawke's loving arms

Hawke: It's a careful chat about missing Qunari. Fenris: Freedom was interesting while it lasted. That's one of my favorite line the delivery is spot on ,saddly it's hard to get it because other companions have priority on this exchange. The "I shall endeavor to exist with less offense" is also a good one I also like the banter in one of the DLC when Hawke says something like "We haven't talked since..." Fenris goes "You want to do this here?!In front of everyone?" And sarcastic Hawke goes "Kinky!". You feel like Fenris can never win with sarcastic Hawke , and sometimes he ignores what's coming out of his mouth ."It's a lot to take in , I know*trollface*" with male Hawke is also one of those "....." moment. Ah Fenris and goofy sarcastic Hawke are such fun together.

I never viewed the rivalmance with Fenris as being cruel to him at all. It's just a different flavor, and it honestly makes more sense to me when I play as a mage then the friendship route. The only reason I ever do the friendship route with a mage is just for the challenge of it (since you start off with at least a small points loss.) I find it rather steamy actually since there's a bit more tension in the rivalry. Both paths are worth trying for sure!

I adore Fenris, he's my second favourite fictional romance (favourite is, of course, Solas). Aside from his voice, I really love his bone-dry humour and acerbic manner of speech. I can never rivalmance him though, it makes me feel abusive like some hatemance. I loved playing a mage with him; trying to prove to him that not all mages out there are ticking time bombs makes for a really sweet story. Basically I left him home for very pro mage quests that I knew dropped a lot of points and hated blood magic around him. After a while the friendship slowly built up even though I disagreed with him for most conversations about mages. I don't like the idea of a rivalmance either, I prefer to be kind to my LIs. And since I always play pro-mage, I tend to have to meta-game with the romance. But it's worth it

I don't post often in the Fenris thread but I do like to lurk it and post one in a blue moon. He is my canon romance for DA2. I love him. I've never been able to rivalmance him because I get too much approval from agreeing with him over the slavers and such. Still say I'm going to get to it some day! lol

I find it rather steamy actually since there's a bit more tension in the rivalry. Both paths are worth trying for sure! The sexual tension is unbelievable between a Mage Hawke and rivalmanced Fenris! When they finally give in and give themselves to each other you can practically feel the heat lol

I don't post often in the Fenris thread but I do like to lurk it and post one in a blue moon. He is my canon romance for DA2. I love him. I've never been able to rivalmance him because I get too much approval from agreeing with him over the slavers and such. Still say I'm going to get to it some day! lol I think it is more difficult than a friendship, but it is worth trying, but need a slightly more strategy. In role playing viewpoint this is the believable ways with pro-mage Hawke (because Fenris always question his/her decisions), and yes, incredibly intense... You can save any slaves in the world (and orphans and widows and kittens whatever you want), but you need always defend the mages against him. And the order are important: You need some rival level for example before you give him the Book of Shartan. One thing: it's easier, if you don't kill Danzig (Feynriel's quest, slave trader), after, then you asked Fenris to help interrogate him. (But I think do not kill someone is not a big sin...) Ergo: you don't need be cruel with him (he will be cruel sometimes).
