Hello and welcome to the newest incarnation of the Valen Shadowbreath thread! Here's the place to discuss everyone's favorite tiefling, ask questions about his character/romance arc, post fanart/fanfiction, and do anything else appropriate in a character thread. Since one of the most common questions asked in the old thread was where to find the Valen romance bug fix, I'll post the link to the vault page right here in the first post: neverwintervault.org/project/nwn1/script/hotu-valen-romance-bugfixThis fix triggers the last set of romance dialog in Ch. 3. You can still get the romance ending without it, but it's nice to have it completed. I don't know if this file fixes the Ch. 2 conversations and/or the Mimic conversation, but I couldn't find separate files for them on the new vault. Again, none of these fixes are necessary to "finish" the romance, but they help make it more complete. If anyone finds the other fixes, let me know and I'll add the files to this post. In order to install the bug fix, you need to be able to edit the Bioware campaign modules in the toolset. The instructions that come with the bug fix assume you're already able to do that, but the campaign modules only become editable after you've finished them. For first-time players, you'll need to do the following: 1. Open the NWN folder in the Neverwinter Nights folder. 2. Open the nwnplayer.ini file. 3. Under where it says [Game Options], copy and paste the following: CODEWORD=hacktastic CODEWORD XP1=ffrodriguez CODEWORD XP2=barkeater These codewords unlock the original campaign, Shadows of Undrentide, and Hordes of the Underdark respectively. The only one you absolutely need is CODEWORD XP2, but you might as well have all three modules unlocked. From there, you can follow the instructions included with the bug fix and enjoy the full Valen experience! Have fun!

Bondari, we haven't met but I just wanted to let you know that I love your HotU fics. And Valen, of course. Happy to see the Valen thread up and running again.

First ever game romance: Valen Shadowbreath. Had no idea romance was even a thing since before that I'd mostly played adventure or puzzle games. Still love that tiefling, and Deekin is no slouch either! One of these years, I really will finish my head-canon write-up.
PS Yay for more/imported emojis!

Yay, I'm glad I'm not the only one in this thread!
Thank you, vertigomez, for your kind words. I've really been neglecting my HotU fics thanks to a combination of work and DAI, but I'm hoping to find some more time to write this month.
I had a very similar experience with Valen, melbella! I knew there were romances in Baldur's Gate (why did they pick Anomen, why?), but I didn't know they were in NWN. Sometime after the conversation where Valen apologizes for not trusting the PC, I started to wonder if just maybe...? I was so glad when Ch. 3 proved me right! And I couldn't resist quoting Deekin in the thread title. That kobold has all the best lines!

Valen was also my first ever game romance. Didn't even realize it was a thing, but I remember thinking wow, I really like this.

I know we'll be losing the old BSN in a few months, so I decided to migrate some of the old fanart over here since a lot of it is really good. I can't draw myself at all, so I'm in complete awe of those who do it well. This is a picture by old BSN poster tankgirly.

Here's another picture by tankgirly. I don't remember the whole story behind the poem, but I believe it was written by David Gaider (who wrote Valen) but was cut from the game for some reason. I think Valen was supposed to read it to the PC at some point? Unfotunately, any concrete information about it is probably hidden somewhere on the original NWN forums. Regardless, it's beautiful. Enjoy!

Does anyone know who wrote Valen romance? It was really good as was the whole Hordes of the Underdark. David Gaider did. I believe he was the lead writer for HotU as a whole, as well. I remember reading on his old tumblr blog that working on HotU was one of the most exhausting projects he'd worked on, along with the Throne of Bhaal expansion to Baldur's Gate II.

Hm, I remember Valen... he was kind of made a sort of central character in HotU IMO.. in a sense.
Anyway, I think I normally used him for the drow sequence, basically, I mean really I would just use the first drow mage for the first part, then Valen, and Aribeth towards the end. I think Aribeth was a better companion stat wise, but Valen was certainly pretty fun. I think one thing is he had that... special mace thing, flail.. and like I never got it maxed out or something. I'm sure he's pretty awesome though.

Valen was my first video game romance as well. I remember discovering the romance by accident and thinking "This so awesome!" Who doesn't want to romance a demon with a heart of gold?

It would be pretty redundant to have both her and Valen as companions anyway since they're both warriors. I really should try it once, though. Valen's weapon is a heavy flail (two-handed) called Devil's Bane. Both it and his signature green armor have cool item descriptions that talk about why he uses them. I have a hard time replacing either one, even when I find better stuff. At least Devil's Bane can be improved through the smith.

Hi all! I'm very happy to see these boards, nice to have 'em. I'm always a bit sour about the fact that the number of henchmen is limited, I love their interactions in every Bioware game, it was hilarious in HotU as well. In my first playthrough, I used mainly Valen and Nathyrra, they had some very funny banters - next time I plan bringing Deekin along. I should try the combos without Valen as well, but it's so comforting to have that red-haired defender by my side Especially the banter where you can confuse the hell out of him in the illithid camp.

Glad you found us, Judith Amell! My first playthrough was Valen and Nathyrra, too. Since I didn't use Deekin in SoU, I didn't see a need for him in HotU (I know, I know, what was I thinking?). Valen and Deekin is my favorite combination for banter, but there are some fun ones between Valen and Nathyrra, particularly the one about his tail.

One of my favorite Valen conversations is the "What makes you so special?" one. When it actually occurs in the game, Valen obviously still doesn't trust the PC, but I always got the feeling that it was a question he continued to mull over in his mind throughout the game. Of course, the answer to that question could change drastically over the course of the romance, which is why I think it's an interesting starting off point for the PCxValen relationship. Enough of my ramblings! Here's the art that made me think of it. Enjoy! by_Ashra_Blitzgeschwind
