So long as no one gets their hopes up. Otherwise it'll end up like the ME3 fallout all over again... Those who were at the old BSN would remember how THAT turned out. The ME3 fallout? Son, I still remember the ME2 pre-release fallout on the BioWare forums that predated the old BSN, when people were going ballistic because Shepard was railroaded into working with Cerberus, aka the clandestine terror group that killed Admiral Kahoku and countless others on the side mission worlds in ME1. Yep, the time BioWare showed information that people didn't like and they were bent out of shape for months because they dared to reveal a "major" spoiler that Shepard dies in the first ten minutes of the game. They are in a no-win situation and so now instead of trying to make fans happy which will never happen anymore they make business decisions that will harm them the least. Not the best way to go, but after seeing the alternative so many times I understand why.

It’s Sunday after all so all of them are off.
Not sure where you're at but here (US/Canada) it's Saturday. Tomorrow is Sunday.
As for the supposed release date, well, that just means I don't need to bother with a new PC for another 3 years.
My computer was built in 2012, and my processor and videocard are outdated. My processor barely meets minimum requirements for Witcher 3, Divinity Original Sin (enhanced edition) and Pillars of Eternity. My video card does not meet minimum requirements for Witcher 3, but somehow I managed to play it.
I really don't want to put more money into this computer, and I don't want to get a new computer years before DA4.
For now I just started Morrowind, and I also have Oblivion in my queue, so those should hopefully last me for nearly a year.

Minimum requirements are just where they cut off support with current software. So if you don't have those system requirements they won't help you with problems that arise so there are plenty of games that might not play optimally on older hardware, but it will run. The place where people might run into problems anymore is with video cards and the features they support if the card is old enough, but normally its not a problem. Its the same thing with Windows OS requirements, its not that it won't run on Windows XP anymore, but since Microsoft no longer supports it they don't want to run into a problem that they might be responsible for fixing because they say its supported, but Microsoft has stopped releasing patches for it.

I don't see any reason not to be optimistic, I'm cautious about a few things but Bioware hasn't failed to deliver a game I've been unhappy putting the money down on it. Pretty much this. I'm old enough now to enjoy the games that come along irrespective of their flaws.

I have to keep my computer in shape for work I do, so having a rig able to play latest games at decent quality is an enjoyable side benefit Still - while I'm not putting my bets on tech/game industry nailing streaming for the purposes of gaming at a time DA4 is launched, we're getting closer to a time when we'd be able to play latest games even on potatoes.

As for Dragon Age, I've no issue with the game being delayed until such time as it's actually finished. Here's hoping eh?

Well glad I've disconnected myself from Dragon Age hype. It's altogether way too long. I'll be back when I'm 32 " class="smile" src="//storage.proboards.com/6576594/images/U0dfDYxjIPUjXCKgHaWy.png"]
You bastard, I turn 32 in less than two weeks!
If someone had told me I would be 35 when the next installment came out I would have cried from shock and disappointment.
I turn 32 in January. High-Five. I think we're a niche population of fans who literally spent a massive chunk of their adult life waiting for this game....

Pretty much this. I'm old enough now to enjoy the games that come along irrespective of their flaws. I still enjoyed DA2 and MEA, despite their obvious flaws and missed potential.
Even the story sometimes faltered, the characters usually made up for it.
(I guess that's why Varric likes the Hanged Man... the place might not be the best, but the company is great)

However, running your hardware at maximum for hours isn't always sustainable. I got through about 2/3 of DAI on a dual-core Athlon with a 6670 vidcard, which had been a pretty good cheap rig back in the day. Then the 6670 blew up.

I can't remember the GPU I had in early 2010 when I finally picked up DAO, but it kept shutting down and rebooting my PC - the only game I had that did that - and when I checked the BIOS on reboot it was showing some insanely hot temp readings. Eventually the entire PC turned into a smouldering lump of plastic and metal, but by that time the business had taken off to the point where I could afford a nice new rig. I vividly remembering having to save-spam every three or four minutes, though, just so I didn't lose progress. Good times.

I once literally melted a graphics card playing Neverwinter Nights 2. And it's not even a good-looking game!
(OK, it was entirely my own fault for buying a cheap card and then ignoring the recommended minimum specs, but still. I will be forever mad about it.)

That is even a risk with cards that meet requirements. My past experiences with AMD are why I don't buy their products because I was running everything as min specs dictated and it still melted my PC.

One thing I have been wondering is if this might also be something that BioWare decided to do after learning from Inquisition. One of the bigger complaints that I saw for Inquisition was removal of certain elements during optimization and certification and I think it was said they consider that one of the mistakes of Inquisition when releasing it for two generations of consoles. So if the new consoles are being aimed for 2022 and it might be 2023 before a new Dragon Age game would put them into the start of a new console generation, but past the initial shortages of hardware.

It's enough time for a lot of people to move on from Dragon Age. When DA4 finally comes out, people will be like "Oh right, that thing I played years ago."
If they want to keep this franchise alive until then, they had better not stop releasing books and comics.

The new consoles are launching late next year so DA4 will fall well into the next gen cycle. So at least that won't be an issue.

If they want to keep this franchise alive until then, they had better not stop releasing books and comics. I remember an interview with Mike Laidlaw a couple years back when he was asked a similar question. He pointed out that it largely doesn't matter how long a sequel takes to make (as long as it's good). Success won't be based on the time between releases. I imagine once those splashy new trailers hit, and the hype machine ramps up, they'll be fine. They'll have months to bring people back up to speed on the storyline.

He pointed out that it largely doesn't matter how long a sequel takes to make (as long as it's good). Success won't be based on the time between releases. Relevance is important. The new Terminator movie, for example, seems well liked by audience and critics, but tanked in the box office, exactly because it is no longer relevant. Striking when the iron is hot and all that. It's going to be nearly a decade since DA:I, which is the, so far, last Bioware game to have received a positive reception, upon release. Bouncing back is going to be difficult. I can't see myself waiting till 2023 for Dread Wolf, to be honest and 2027 for "Andromeda 2", but that's just me and as such it while it won't apply to everyone, you also have to account for how many will give up before me. And I've been with Bioware since 1998, so I've got some mileage and reliability.

Franchises aren’t as limited to existing fans as we sometimes imagine them to be. I’ve played Shadowrun: Hong Kong and have yet to play any of the earlier Shadowrun games. There are plenty of folks who got into Dragon Age from DA2 or Inquisition. Something in the marketing or reviews grabbed them that didn’t grab them for DA:O. IMO, this is one of the big strengths of having games set in a universe, rather than following one individual person. I think where franchises have to worry about lost relevance is when they go too inside-baseball for their existing fans, leaving no hooks for newcomers.
