So, now that you can pop 20 headshots before the beginning of wave 3 and headbutt every phantom into submission, you may find the SP combat trivial. But we were all noobs once (it's ok to admit it ) and sometimes it was quite a challenge. I certainly had some "oh shit" moments like facing off against Benezia and recruiting Archangel. Here are just some notes you may take into consideration before deciding. ME1A mix of corridor shooting and open world like levels where you could fight on foot or in the Mako. Overheat mechanic (also for the Mako gun). Weapons could be modded to change stats and ammo types. Different armor types which also could be modded. You could change weapons and armor for both Shepard and crew members. Class restriction, power wheel and individual cooldowns. Imo, certain powers were broken, like Immunity, Neural Shock and biotics, ending up OP when leveled up. ME2
Open world levels and the Mako got scrapped. Cover shooter mechanics implemented. Weapons could no longer be modded but still be upgraded. Heavy weapons. Ammo types became a class power. Change to limited ammo (thermal clips). Class restricted access to weapon types. Crew member armor cosmetic only while Shepard's could be modded. Cooldown changed to global and combos introduced. ME3Shield gate. A higher number of weapons with individual upgrades, some with different mechanics. Modding and overheat mechanic for some weapons reintroduced. Types were restricted for crew members but no longer for Shepard. More armor types for Shepard (non DLC), for crew members one stat would change. Global cooldown affected by weight. We know the broken features from ME3MP ME1-3 Shepard could obtain a non-class bonus power after you completed in-game achievements. ME4Mix of corridor and open world again. Jetpacks. More weapons, upgrades and mechanics (through crafting) but for Ryder only. No ability to change crew member weapons and armor. No class restrictions and no power wheel. Individual cooldowns.

This could possibly be me just not enjoying the game, but for me, it is easily ME1. ME2, ME3, and Andromeda were all pretty damned easy (ME2 Insanity probably the toughest of these, but even that wasn't that bad after the first shock of realizing that you weren't immortal anymore).

Mass Effect 2, while not mechanically the most difficult, was morally the toughest combat for me because I had to murder all those adorable looking blue suns turians just to make it through. Compared to the turian enemies in the other games, they were just fantastic.

i only really struggled once, and had to ressort to heavy wepaons cheating. -On NG+ while having to block the hangar below archangel. man those vorchas were already playing against a fully build shep team while i had no bonus yet or smtg like that ? I dont remember the specific, but i think i failed countless tries on the same 20 m to close that door before trivilizing it with the arc gun - i now remember i couldnt handle the krogan on ME1 while going to find that stupid liara on my last redo. No idea what happened... I used to be a scrub and had no real problem there, but that time i needed help !

The Vorcha and Varren in that mission suck hardcore at level 30.

ME2Best and most difficult. While not as fluid as ME3, it had a certain visceral feeling to it, that was lost in 3. Evolving the same class among different line of specializations and weapon choices was also more impactful in terms of varied play style (e.g. Agent Infi with long Tac Cloak vs Assassin Infi with damage Tac Cloak). The DLCs brought combat to epic levels. ME1I'm in the minority of people who liked ME1 combat system a lot. It was certainly different and brought a unique hard sci-fi flair to it - the removable helmets (wish they'd played around more with that) , the overheating system, etc. It would have been right there with ME2 in terms of enjoyability and difficulty were it not for the lack of balancing that broke some powers - biotics and Immunity being the most grievous offenders. ME3 SPWhat's that? I played SP only once and ... . It's like the alpha version of Disney Wars. It's too tainted for me to evaluate the combat on a stand alone basis. ME3 MP(Platinum) Team games are easier than ME 2, soloing is harder. Geth on open maps might be technically the most difficult of all ME but I take away several points for the sheer frustration of it, so the desklamps can go *** themselves . And while Collies/Plat might be the second most difficult, they are also probably the most enjoyable for me.

For me, what made ME1 special was the enemy speed and laterally quite often. It made the game quite brutal and very dependant on the first tens of seconds. then yeah biotics and immunity ... make things a bit dull. While in me2 u are far more less rushed, or slower. ME3 SPWhat's that? I played SP only once and ... . It's like the alpha version of Disney Wars. It's too tainted for me to evaluate the combat on a stand alone basis. I m not sure how u can love mp combat and airlocking sp combat like that... I mean, almost everything is the same, it s just SHEP is OP. So that even tunable if u want. I did all me2 classes on insanity without problems before ME3. I really sucked at MP I m pretty sure i got better @ ME2 with mp, well not sure. Did u replayed ME2 SP after soloing plat regularly ? Cause even soloing silver seems harder than ME2 insanity... Or maybe u play without pausing ? I guess it s the main parameter here. If i replay SP, i might unbound the pause button, cause i cant resist it , and it sure makes thing easy.

I meant that the colossal f*ckup that was ME3 story tainted the gameplay for me. I played the SP in the first few days after it came out and didn't touch ME for a month and a half, when I tried MP. Here we are several thousand hours later...
As for ME2, I never pause but I sometimes "flash" the map button to see where the enemy red dots are. And as I said, soloing is harder, team games are easier.
Also ME3 (Plat) has a bit more hectic feel to it, which I think makes us evaluate it as more difficult than it really is.

The only time that i remember getting my ass brutally kicked, was in ME1, when you had to fight the krogan battlemaster after you rescued Liara. And only because i always went there at low levels (ence, little to not abilities to knock down that mofo). cheers!

Also I did not find ANY of the SP experiences exceedingly difficult and that's because the fun factor always exceeded the difficulty.

Why almost everybody around thinks that Trolls are first or second hardest faction?I really don't understand. Only clumsy units and here and there hard wave.8 and 10. That's all.4 also could be a problem, depends on the char/weapon combo.IMO they are the easiest facton. Yes,some cheap tricks like the swarms or abombs, but nothing serious.Thunderdome is nothing compared to glacier hazard/cerby,not to mention geth. That's just my 2 cents of course. On topic. I enjoyed every ME combat. They felt different, but all equally fun.

Trolls are the easiest faction. Yes,some cheap tricks, but nothing serious.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Mass Effect
My favorite. I survived Benezia who threw me down at her feet with no health at all, and suddenly a Deus Ex Machina Garrus Sabotaged her ass (not the AI Hacking that was reduced to in the later games) giving me time to get up and recover. I let this cool Turian to deal with his issues the way he seemed fit. My Wingman, forever and ever.
Mass Effect 2
Balanced classes. I had three playthroughs, Infiltrator (best Tactical Cloak), Soldier (I died when I wanted to), and Vanguard (most fun of them all, they were screwed in ME3, being more like flying Adepts). 3x YMIRs...? Meh.
Mass Effect 3
Some gay guy mistook the brake for the gas pedal, omg noone cares, Insanity=Bronze. Amplified Concussive Shot, had a seizure when I first saw Adrenaline Rush, Grenades made a solid comeback, High-Lord Claymoar. Soloing Armax with all factors against me killed me inside.
Mp could the be the exact very foundation for something way better, bigger, more diverse and successful. Instead, it faded into a sad, sloppy nothing, like Biower's future. Cancerous design and balance decisions.
Andramada
Yo, Lars, you had to mention this meme platform. Why talk about its super revolutionized combat system while we could make fun of it.
Best anti-depressant there. Thanks, EAware.

Speaking from my own experience playing all the ME games as a whole.
ME1
Lift city lmao. And damn pistols were strong in that game.
ME2
This was what I started out with as my introduction to the ME series and the toughest one for me in terms of combat. And I honestly have too many memories starting out, since I died a ton in this game. Even more so when I attempted to tackle hardcore and Insanity and I pretty much gave up at that point. And I would say I got much better at ME2 because of all the hours combined from ME3 SP and the MP together. And having a better understanding of how mine and my teammates powers work and how to utilise them more effectively.
I can complete insanity for ME2 without as much trouble. Still occasionally die from time to time but at least not as much now. That's what I liked about ME2, is that there is a decent possibility of dying in that game, forcing me to use actual brain power unlike the other ME games I can like half turn off my brain and not worry as much.
ME3.
I will say here there might be some stuff I'll say that people may agree or disagree. But for me the combat (For the SP) is not too tough, there's some hard parts here and there in the game, the basic enemies in this game like the marauders and assault troopers off the top of my head that feel the closest to what the basic enemies were like in ME2, aren't as oppressive where you're forced to at least in most cases to stay in cover. And in ME3 you have more leeway and they're not too threatening .
MEA
I love making front of this game and meme-ing about it. Combat wise as a whole it was okay-ish, not my favourite would rather retreat back to ME3 lol.
On a side note back in the vanilla version of MEA, it had some ridiculous level scaling, so ridiculous that at max scaling enemies were literally big HP sponges. I didn't have a problem with it because it did force me to play smarter than what it is now. Since bioware pretty much decimated the level scaling, with any actual good build that was turbocharge centric or anything as crazy as those kinds of build.
Pretty much trivialised insanity it's lower than bronze or of any kind of mineral you'd name it lower than bronze. Since enemies can die so fast anyways, that you'd honestly have to go out of your way to die or do self imposed challenges where you nerf yourself to make insanity feel like "Insanity"

ME1 is hardest because you can get OSK'd by a rocket hitting the cover you're behind, this plus broken hitboxes, enemy biotics working on you, narrow weapon choice, difficult specing and charging krogans.
Unless we measure difficulty not by mean but supremum, then ME2 and landing between two YMIRs and a wall on several occasions.

Not sure how I'd rank them exactly tbh but generally for the most part I'd say ME2 and MEA are for me I'd asy the hardest as I do sometimes struggle to complete some missions wihtout dying such as Garrus's recruitment mission and quite often on MEA I tend to at least die once or twice when fighting the architects. Iewould say I find ME1 the easiest with 3 in the middle somewher as ME1 is the onl yME game I've managed to complete without dying at all though in th case of ME1 I've only managed it a couple of times. I thin kfor me though it's moer I thimnk the fac tthat MEA i sa moer action focus rather than a tactical one that kind of makes it a littl eharder foer mre in tha tso, metimes I don'r tpress the required button quick enough due to my reactions being slower due t omy disability I still enjoy it though.

I only played ME1 with an Immunity Solier I think. At least on PC, not sure what I did on Xbox that one time. I remember some fights on a higher difficulty not really being challenging but just tedious. MEA I played to little SP of to judge it. Seemed rather boring and easy though. ME3 I ran through Insanity pretty quickly. Shield gate sucked though and made me rage in a few instances when playing with the good old widow. Also I had plenty of experience when playing ME3 because I have played a shitload of ME2 with all classes several times. Probably the most played SP game for me. ME2 wasn't that hard but the Praetorians kinda caught me off guard and the platform fight in the collector ship was tough at first. So I'll go with ME2.

The first time I played Insanity on ME2 (as a Sentinel, of course), I got stuck at that fight so bad. Had to turn the game off and walk away, came back at it a few days later and got through (but not without dying 2 or 3 times before I figured it out). That's something I liked about ME2's Insanity, first time around, it was pretty tricky, but once you figured it out, it wasn't insanely difficult (I'm not the best gamer, I like to be able to finish stuff, even if I like there to be challenge along the way). There were also very few tedious fights, since ME2 went more for crowd control and massed enemy forces than bullet spongers.

I tried to recall some of the difficult ME2 encounters at least off the top of my head that were difficult for me at least, I'm probably missing some but I don't remember. And I haven't played ME2 in a while.
I remember had trouble in the series of fights where you fought off an army of husks and the scions and then a horde of collector trooper/captains afterwards, and then the praetorian boss fight at the end. I'm pretty sure that those sequence of fights gave me a lot of trouble back then.
I hated Zaeed's loyalty mission for sure, it was the final part and you had to traverse these rows of enemy spawns (And IIRC the enemies spawned endlessly until you occupied that spawn point?? may be wrong can't remember) and you had to inch your way and at the end there was a YMIR mech at the end which I just sprinted past because I was like "fuck that noise" lol and wanted the mission to be over.
Tali's second loyalty mission had a similar thing with Zaeed's endless enemy spawn that had me scratching my head a fair amount of times.
The final collector wave in the suicide mission where you had to stay in the biotic bubble, don't remember much except that was a scion in the background and some husks and collector troopers I think that swarmed you while you stayed in the single hexagon shaped cover <.<
I don't remember if I've done this particular fight, but there was this one fight where you were playing solo as Shepard and there was a reactor core or something in the middle of a single room and you can survive multiple waves until you're forced to lose that fight to advance the plot or whatever.

ME1, because I never really cheated with a SR and heavy barrel mods.
MEA because they turned the bullet sponge to unfun. Also jet packs are silly idea when cover is the better option.
And lastly ME2 because the weapons were peashooters.
ME3 because it was hard if you didn't know how it worked. Full Auto Avenger my rear.

Umm, most ME2 weapons were actually excessively powerful (especially compared to ME3/MEA).

ME1, because I never really cheated with a SR and heavy barrel mods. I dont quite remember SR being broken OP in ME1 ? I think i only played one run with them, but except that it gave an easy first kill from distance, i dont remember what came next...

Then you kite all enemies to 1 furball and shoot it. It deals AoE and kills most. Overheats of course but that was the little price.
Edit: You play essentialy as a heavyweight single shot shotgun. Like Claymore. Not sure about reload (overheat) cancel, tho.

Then again, MEA was kinda difficult (MP). It wasn't really geared for melee combat and the jetpacking was awkward to use for it, but what else could you do other than punching your way through when the guns were so shit it wasn't funny anymore.
Looking back Bioware had an awful tendency to start players with peashooters. The SP of MEA was a step in the right direction for a change, but MP got worse since every iteration through DAI and finally MEA. Tho I've seen Division footage of players unloading whole magazines into the heads of NPCs - must be some kind of future tech. Heavy skin weave or so. With subdimensional layer. It's probably just the shitty monetisation forcing ridiculous grind and idiotic shooter mechanics on players.
