Yeah, I could tell you watched vids and read some stuff. That's why you lack context. Again, no one is saying all of the actions taken in the game are close to good acts. Actually, its precisely the opposite point being made. Still, aside from going on a mad quest, I've not seen Ellie do anything that could be termed unequivocally evil. One thing was pretty rough, but entirely in character and on task. People were going to get hurt in this game. She's given people chances, and they've chosen not to take them. Honestly, I'd not have expected this game to interest you, anyway. I'm surprised to see you here slumming it with us maniacs. (I jest.) Screw it, I know this thread is no spoilers but everyone just avoid the box. It's all about the context. The first was bad, but on task. The second was not as you paint it. I don't want to continue a spoilery exchange here. Once I finish the game, I'll drop by the other thread. Still, I don't see what we will gain from discussing it. You seem adamantly decided. This game is consciously designed to try to get one to see how and why humans might take such a harsh road. No one but a nut job would take pleasure in this type of stuff in real life; but it's tragic and moving to see characters I like try to survive it and rise above. We'll see what happens by story's end.

Playing this game has finally given me the nudge needed to drop in and say hi. I'm very far along in the game. I'd guess maybe 2/3 of the way through. I don't trust my playtime stamps because my dog ensures that half my time is spent paused. I've not really tried to verify whether it's counting those idle times. I'll pay attention next PT. Anyway, this game is phenomenal so far. I wish people weren't so hung up on the few moments that seem to be at the heart of all of their complaints. These characters and stories are really good, as expected. The people involved are generally cool people who can also be shockingly violent. They're shaped by their world, their experiences. That doesn't "make it right," so to speak; but who can judge them too harshly? This world is terrible. It's awkward talking around key plot points. I will say for Hanako Ikezawa that I've not seen Ellie commit any atrocities. She's stacked a lot of bodies, but none that didn't try to kill her first. She's the same as she's always been. I keep thinking back to the review SkillUp (is that his name?) did, referencing supposed plotholes. Maybe they're yet to come, but I've not encountered any. It's been very clean and tight. Unlike him, I'm enjoying the entire cast of the game, and enjoying the convergent storylines. Oh, well. Enough talking around the details. I'll return for some proper discussion after completing the game. I cannot go into details with why I think this game is a major disappointment for me and why I think the only thing the game has going for it is the fidelity aspects of the game, but don't just assume its a couple of moments in the game that turned me off from liking it. I could just as easily say reasons why I think the game works for you and it would be just as insulting. I don't think this is a spoiler, but I will put it in tags and if a mod has a problem with it I understand and feel free to delete it. After someone made this comparison I cannot stop thinking how true it applies to my experience with the story of this game that it fails to give me the same impact that a side quest in Mass Effect 2 does for telling the same type of story. Neil Druckmann has been quoted to saying this is a story about hate and in the end it wasn't for me, it was a story about indifference for I didn't care one way or the other by the end.

Sanunes, I thought you had likewise decided not to play it. I'm not saying that to preemptively invalidate your opinions, only that I thought you hadn't played it. Deciding against something you probably won't like is smart consumerism, so no judgment, regardless of whether you've played or not. This game won't be for everyone. The first one was less heavy and still wasn't for everyone. There could be myriad reasons beyond the dark content for people to dislike the game. Personally, I think it's been great, at least in the gut-wrenching fashion of great that I expected. The story and characters have worked well for me, and the production qualities and gameplay have been fantastic. I seriously doubt they could ruin the game fir me in the last hour, but ME3 was a thing. We'll see how it goes, and I'll talk more in the other thread.

^I believe Ellie is really messed up after that incident though. Almost breaks her if I understood the context right.
Showing bad stuff happen to innocent people or even doing them as the protagonist is not encouraging the behavior. If players get off on it, then they're messed up in the head. But pretty much all stories that aren't straight up rape porn or amok run simulators, like that one game a few years ago on Steam, will tell the player that these things are awful and WRONG. Just because a narrative shows why people end up doing bad things and wants you to empathize with the characters getting trapped in a spiral of violence, doesn't mean these actions are any less wrong.
And people pay a price for doing bad things. They always do.
You don't have to play things that you're not comfortable with. That's not saying anything about the quality of a narrative though.

The leaks were the best service, saving countless people from wasting their money on this shit. I'm bemused at your comments as they appear to bear little relation to this awesome game. I'm at around the 30 hour mark and I think the game's getting better. Worth a discussion perhaps once the game is done. There may be difficulties I have yet to see.

And... that's done. There came a point after which I just had to see it through. 36 hours playthrough. Not an easy game, in many senses. Certainly one of the best games I've played in recent years.

It’s why such awards, whether the Oscars for movies or GotY for games have lost any standing among most of the populace. It’s how certain circles make themselves feel smarter or such... “the masses like that but don’t like this? Let’s rajss this up to show we’re the elite critic!” Not to say that sometimes a work of art is ahead of its time, but usually those grow in stature even to the mainstrean. Oscar bait is usually forgotten. And you know... sometimes I want loud, silly, and fun. And things like Fast and the Furious or Saint’s Row are well made for that. So well made they should get some noms since they made a technically sound work of art for the intended narrative purpose. Why that is always ignored by “critics” is beyond me.

2020 in gaming has taken a while to get going, but the second half is looking good.
We have the outstanding LOUII. I have high hopes for Ghost of Tsushima, AC Valhalla and Cyberpunk of course.
It's good to be a gamer.

It's good to be a gamer. It's been a long drought for me. This year, I'll be buying at least three games. (TLoUII & GoTsushima are already bought, and Valhalla is a given.) I can't recall the last time that happened. It's likely that we'll see a steady stream of quality titles into next year, too.

Huge sales for TLOUII incidentally. "The Last of Us Part 2 sells 4M, becomes fastest-selling Sony game ahead of Spider-Man. Sony's post-apocalyptic survival game beat out other hit PlayStation-made games such as God of War, Marvel's Spider-Man and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End." [ source] As the games industry loves to follow the money, I trust this will mean more great looking, bug-free (and MTX free) games with strong and challenging storylines.

How many studios are out there, which are first party, do the game for one platform only, have 100 mil+ budget, 4+ years for development and all that for just 30 hours of game with zero replayability?
