As several comments below the video point out vacuum cleaner bags were not meant to be worn and breathed through by people. They might contain harmful substances. Also all those seams might be weak spots where unfiltered air can get through. They might need additional air tightening, like putting some kind of sealant (safe for humans of course). If you are going make home made protective equipment, please, put some extra thought and research into it, you wouldnt want to use something that is more dangerous to you than the virus itself. And on topic of face masks, if you have seen these types of respirators: That plastic thingie in front of it is a check-valve. When a person inhales it closes and air goes through a filter, when exhales it opens up and allows unfiltered air from person to escape. This is to help a person to breathe more easily, as he doesnt need to put extra effort to push air out through filter. This means two things: 1) you cant use it on already sick people 2) if someone nearby uses this type of mask he only protects himself and its up to you to protect yourself. P.S. I am neither a healthcare nor a protective gear specialist, these are my thoughts based on some online browsing and 'common sense'.

It is an effort to jerry-rig the best possible protection in a desperate situation where even health care workers don't always have the protection they need. It is meant to provide better protection than a cloth mask and even a cloth mask is better than nothing. There is nothing misleading in this video.

Welp, my boss' brother tested positive and is in the hospital... they live about 600km apart though, so no cross-contamination. I'm on the A rotation and get to go into the office next week

We've reduced our days going into the office starting tomorrow. Will be going in only 2 days per week and wfm the other 3 for this month at least. I placed my first Walmart pickup order for tomorrow on my way home, so I don't have to go into the store. Hope they keep the cold stuff cold.

Friend of mine … has been MIA the last few days. Finally got to talk to her last night. She found out a few days ago that she's laid off at least through Jul … with the possibility of it getting extended to Nov-Dec. She's a groundskeeper at a golf course and with no golfers … no money to pay for upkeep of a course … that no one is playing.
I asked if she had enough reserves for necessities … through Jul? Yeah, but for Nov-Dec? … that will be problematic. There are no words to make it better, there really isn't anything I can do to help. My income took a hit, but I'm pretty sure I've got the necessities covered … so I'm lucky … "wants" get put off until whenever, but "needs" are covered … I can eat, pay my utility bills. Which doesn't help her one bit.
Most of us have friends or family in similar situations … or find ourselves in that situation. Other than emotional support, I'm afraid I can't provide any kind of financial support to friends … going to restrict that kind of help to family … because it's coming. Frustrating. Kinda leaves a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach.

In theory the unemployment expansion should handle her case. Will it do so in practice?

Our country of 5 million crossed the 1000 case mark - including 1 death and those who've recovered - yesterday, but our 'curve' appears to be flattening, which is the first milestone of the lockdown, so I guess that means it is starting to work. We've tried getting supermarket deliveries since this thing started, but no luck. They allow booking up to 1 week in advance and you basically have to be on at midnight to have a shot. Thankfully, we've got a 'small' brand supermarket nearby which is nowhere near as busy as the big ones and has implemented a max of 10 shoppers instore at once, with a one in, one out policy. I was third in line when I arrived the other day and inside within five minutes. So, tolerable, certainly in context of what else is going on. All still healthy and bearing up pretty well. I've never been for so many damn bike rides, though

My grocery store doesn't have such a thing. Luckily, it's not far from my place. Just across the parking lot.

In theory the unemployment expansion should handle her case. Will it do so in practice? IDK … she's Canadian, lives in Quebec Provence … so whatever the rules are for Canada or perhaps specifically Quebec Province … will apply to her.
On a brighter note, she's feeling a lot less down today.
Maybe having friends to talk to, even make her laugh ( ) … perhaps that has helped.
Also likely she is adjusting to the bad news and rebounding from the emotional effects of the layoff.

I went to one of the stores of a local drugstore chain and now they're requiring costumers to have a face mask and gloves to even enter. Things are getting wild.

There's one good thing to say about all this craziness: at least the virus isn't turning people into flesh eating zombies. Can you imagine the chaos if it did...

The mask in the video is not intended to be a preferable substitute for the normal 3m n95 mask. It is an effort to jerry-rig the best possible protection in a desperate situation where even health care workers don't always have the protection they need. It is meant to provide better protection than a cloth mask and even a cloth mask is better than nothing. There is nothing misleading in this video. And what I am saying is that people should be careful and do additional research before they start jerry-rig stuff they saw on internet. Are you sure any material will do? That it is ok to rub it in your face or inhale through a material that was meant to be put in a vacuum cleaner? Is the benefit of higher protection against virus outweights the risk of getting allergic reaction or inhaling carcinogenic substance? That video does not address these issues and so its up to you (or someone who desides to make this mask) to find out. Well, as vast amounts of air are passing through the vacuum cleaner bag during normal use, at far higher pressure differences than in breathing, it seems a bit far fetched that it would present a health hazard due to anything in the bag. On the contrary, the air blown through the vacuum cleaner remains in your home for breathing for many hours, so the bag should reasonably be safe in that regard. Otherwise this would have been a scandal a long time ago. But turn the outside of the bag against your nose, i.e. the inside of your breathing. There are a couple of other caveats though. The breathing resistance. The bags are made for higher pressures than breathing. But if it works it works. Bigger filter area gets you lower pressure difference. And the moisture in your exhale. What will that do to the bag? If I needed protection and didn't have anything else, I'd still make a mask from a vacuum cleaner bag.

Yep, I've noticed that too. Zero concern for how they might put others at risk, or make other people feel exposed to risk.

Well, if it does, the human race can kiss it's ass goodbye. Nah, its people like me who would survive, and out of the ashes of the old world I'd create a new empire of fire and steel and blood! Something I've noticed is despite this affecting the whole world, some people still think of themselves instead of others. Pretty much everyone does, especially in a catastrophe. Its only natural - those who thought of others too much during dire times long perished in a process called evolution.
