Again with the Toilet Paper, there's no way it's for their own use, the scalpers and profiteers like the shits they are have moved on to toilet paper.
Santa: "What do you want for Christmas little boy?" Little Charlie: "Oh it would be like a dream come true if you could bring me a lovely pack of toilet paper, Santa, oh please Santa please."

Loosely related, I found this today on Spotify. It's a tad vulgar, but it gets the point across. NSFW!
It's cathartic as hell.

It never rains but it pours...
According to recent news reports the South African mutation (501Y.V2) is now present in the UK. The variant has been causing mounting concern in South Africa, where health minister Zweli Mkhize warned that "young, previously healthy people are now becoming very sick". Now I'm waiting for the plagues of frogs and locusts, I'll probably drink myself to death before this touches me, thank you 2020 what a wonderful year, so cheers and Merry Christmas........It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.....Dante's Inferno.
Me when this curse is over and they finally allow me a normal life....

A Study shows that anticoagulants given to hospitalized patients reduce mortality: Anticoagulation, Bleeding, Mortality, and Pathology in Hospitalized Patients With COVID-19TL/DR: Patients in 5 New York hospitals were given anticoagulants after being admitted with severe covid symptoms. More studies are needed, but the results show reduced mortality in therapeutic patients and reduced need of intubation in prophylactic patients. Interestingly: "There was no premortem suspicion of thromboemboli in 25 of 26 patients." Meaning you don't get a warning, covid just blocks your arteria and you are done. The study means however, that you probably sholdn't take Aspirin as a precaution, because it increases the risk of bleeding in case you are hospitalized.

Today I have started using eye protection additionally to my P3 mask. I don't like the idea of having to go shopping in crowded stores with the now super infectious virus with exposed eyes. Since I am using a proper mask, not one of those cloth / paper masks, I have zero fogging of my glasses fortunately. I am using clear glasses that wrap around the sides as well, in normal times those are actually the safety glasses I use for target shooting.
Also, I have weighed my options and decided it makes sense to get vaccinated, so I am going to do that as soon as it is possible (which is probably gonna be somewhere around summer).
Oh, and I have noticed a lot of empty shelves in the store, especially diary products, frozen stuff, meat and...cat food of all things. Nearly completely barren. I would have expected pasta and rice to go dry first, but nope, truckloads of that stuff in the shelves.

I have been wondering when the vaccinations gain momentum, though.

Excellent, I am glad you changed your mind, albeit the actual jab may be months away. Thing is I have to be realistic, even if I'm super careful I will eventually get exposed to the virus anyway, sooner or later, and then the severity of the infection will be determined by factors I do not know and/or don't have under control. Now with the vaccination I will be exposed only to bits and pieces of the virus in a very controlled way at a date of my choice that suits me - and by the time I get the vaccine there will be months of ''field experience'' available anyway, which should be enough data for me to determine its usefulness and potential hazards to a satisfying degree. Long story short - more control = better. I still have to decide which vaccination I will get, but there is enough time to think about it and gather more data.

There is always risk in life. It's something we have to accept, just as that there is no absolute knowledge in advance. Much as I see the possibility for long term risk (not for vaccines in general - they're safe - but for this particular vaccine), I'm not young enough anymore, and I've lost half a lung, so choosing my risk, I will have the vaccine. The rest is up to powers beyond me.

I also received the Pfizer vaccine and I'm going to return on 2/2/21 for the second shot. What a way that will be to celebrate Groundhog's day! I had some very minor soreness, hardly even worth mentioning. Easy as pie! It bothers me that there isn't more vaccine available. But toward the end of December 2020, I read that President-Elect Biden intends to invoke Defense Production Act to boost Covid-19 vaccine production once he takes office on 1/20/2021. If he does, that could speed vaccine distribution up a lot. The more pokes the merrier! As many others have described, it's just the typical minor soreness from the shot and that's about it. It was the second shot that was a little rough. About 12 hours after the shot, it was like getting a 24hr flu, with fever and aches and all the rest of the ugh... but 24hrs after that started, it was clear sailing again. Don't take this the wrong way, I'm not trying to throw shade on anything or be a naysayer, I'll get in line when my opportunity arises, I'm just passing along what I heard so it could be something to mentally prepare for. Also scheduling, I'll see if I can time the second shot to coincide with something that gives me a good 48 hours of downtime after

You all getting vaccinated makes me both happy and sad. Happy because finally people get immunized against that crappy virus and first steps are being taken to get back to normal. About time. Sad because my country suck ass and I wont get the opportunity to get vaccinated till at least summer, despite our high case numbers. So months and months of more suckage Oh, and we got tons of that el-cheapo vaccine that has only a 60-70% immunization rate, which is planned to get distributed to the younger generations because they are less at risk in case the immunization does not work and they get infected anyway, the old people get the good stuff.

Oh trust me, it's the same everywhere. The sick and elderly get the Pfizer stuff and the rest get what they get and not in a particularly hurried schedule. But I'm super happy that the vaccinations have started; it gives that glimmer of hope that things just might get back to normal this year.

How's this for irony: I live in the country where the BioNTech vaccine was developed (manufactured by Pfizer) and my turn is about December 2021.
Unless there are more delays and shortages of course.

On the plus side, by the time you're getting vaccinated, at least they'll have a better idea if we (the human collective) will require regular/yearly booster vaccinations to keep things in check.

On the plus side, by the time you're getting vaccinated, at least they'll have a better idea if we (the human collective) will require regular/yearly booster vaccinations to keep things in check. I'm worried that at this slow vaccination rate the virus has enough time (hosts) to mutate to a version that will circumvent the vaccination and start this crap all over again. I read a report about a virologist who said that the vaccine will only work for a relatively short time and that its only a stop-gap solution, the only real way to deal with this virus and its future mutated offspring will be a drug for treating the illness. (Apparently the virus mutates a great deal more than originally anticipated) Problem is, now for a medication that is administered regularly over a long period of time you definitely NEED long term tests and research, and that WILL take years, unlike the vaccines. She hopes that a drug that is already in use which can be slightly modified to get it ready much sooner can be found. I don't remember the name of the expert, but she is working - very successfully- on medications for treating HIV.

How's this for irony: I live in the country where the BioNTech vaccine was developed (manufactured by Pfizer) and my turn is about December 2021. Unless there are more delays and shortages of course. Same here. I guess my 91 year old neighbors next door will be a good indicator of just how slow vaccination progresses... It's probably going to be summer for my 66 year old mom who's a heart attack survivor. She's starting to get scared of the virus. :/ 50% of Germany's population is 60+. Let that sink in... The median age is 47, compared to the USA where it's 37. Germany is the third most aged society while the USA ranks 61st. That's crazy. We'll never get enough people vaccinated in time... Months ago I read an article already explaining that a vaccine is a logistic impossibility for the entire planet. It's not just the vaccine itself being in short supply, it's needles and vials too. It cannot be done. It would take 10+ years. If we get lucky the vaccines can keep health care from collapsing which is the most important thing. So it's not pointless. But it's not a short term solution or even the ultimate savior from what I understand. I read a few weeks ago that there supposedly was a German pharmaceutical company that had a treatment back in April already, was ready for certification and basically just lacked funds for production. German government shot them down... We're betting on the vaccine horse, thank you very much. Mind bogglingly stupid if true. We need TREATMENT much more than a vaccine that may or may not work! Once we can minimize severe cases/deaths, we're good. Then it becomes a minor annoyance like the flu to most people and we can get our social lives back.

That is certainly possible. Most vaccines need a booster from time to time. It took 25 years to eradicate smallpox, I'm sure we'll eventually get rid of this bug as well.

She hopes that a drug that is already in use which can be slightly modified to get it ready much sooner can be found. I don't remember the name of the expert, but she is working - very successfully- on medications for treating HIV. I'm no virologist, so it's difficult to answer this, but I'm gonna give it a whirl anyway.
All viruses mutate, it's how they evolve. Viruses have only one purpose in "life", to spread as far and wide as possible, and they need to mutate to do that. This is covid's first run in the human population, so it's adapting itself to be able to infect it's hosts more efficiently. It doesn't mean that it's getting more deadly though, possibly the opposite, as viruses seldom want to kill their hosts, as this slows their spread.
I've read some reports by HIV virologists as well. Apparently they are your "goto guys" when in need of information about coronaviruses, as HIV belongs to the coronavirus family. But the family contains hundreds of viruses, most of which are relatively harmless and cause only flu-like symptoms. And HIV is a special case, as it goes straight for the jugular and destroys the human immune system. It is also the fastest mutating biological organism known to man, making it very difficult to tackle.
To put this into context, I'll use Lassa virus as an example. Lassa is a fairly well known virus that causes a hemorrhagic fever. It's not super deadly, but it is very nasty all in all. It's original host is a mouse and you need to come into contact with the mouse's urine or feces to become infected. Once it is in a human host however, it can spread from person to person.
Now, Lassa has been known for a while, so why hasn't it been eradicated already? The recommendation for the areas where Lassa is prevalent is to get a cat. And I'm not even kidding. You might have guessed it already: It's because the areas where Lassa is common are in rural West Africa. It's all about the money.
It's the same with HIV; It's not all the rave anymore, so funding is scarce. Covid on the other hand hit the Western Countries right in the money maker, so research is being funded well in excess. Therefore I'm quite optimistic about the future. It might take a few years, but in the end we'll either have a vaccine or medication or both.

Once we can minimize severe cases/deaths, we're good. Then it becomes a minor annoyance like the flu to most people and we can get our social lives back. Having worked for Big Pharma I can assure you, you underestimate modern automation and robotics. The capasity is there, but there are shortages in raw materials, due to covid, ironically. Turns out, moving all that production to Asia wasn't such a hot idea after all. We are not talking about normal peace time production here; most countries have enacted emergency powers allowing them to force more production out of factories.
I couldn't find any information about a German pharmaceutical company being shut down in last April. I'm calling it fake news unless you can provide a source?
Finding a working treatment for covid may prove to be difficult. There are only few antiviral drugs in the market, and the reason is again, money: Antivirals are cutting edge technology. But I'm optimistic, as there is plenty of financing to be had atm.

Don't remember what article it was. Probably something linked from reddit. Fake news most likely because something so stupid would have made big news I would say. I still doubt production, for whatever reason, can be ramped up enough to vaccinate billions within two years. And that's hoping the virus won't mutate so much in the meantime that it requires a seasonal shot like the flu. Time is not on our side right now. This shit is spreading too fast to save enough people, yet not fast enough to get rid of it. So covid might be here to stay.

USA here, 2021 was supposed to be better.
Anyway I get my first vaccine dose on Inauguration Day. Like Double Celebration or something. Which is great, cuz city where I'm working just got their first confirmed case of the super spreader variant.
