Week 4 of self isolation with my Mum.... If anyone could recommend a movie that a woman in her seventies will like, but that won't make me want to gouge my own eyes out with a spoon, I'd be grateful. Last week was Knives Out which got a thumbs up. Though no ttrechnicaly a movi eI know my nan liked it but if you lik ewhodunit's you might want to considre Murder She Wrote. I used t oenjoy whodunit's growing up and that was a good one.

It was always about flattening the curve so we could handle the sick and dying at a steady rate to avoid making triage decisions about who gets a vent (and causing more dying from lack of vents). It was never about avoiding people getting it. Everyone is going to get it eventually. My assumption from the news, at the moment, is that all of this will suck really badly until say, July? And then we'll get small ripple waves of comebacks as we let up sanctions and it finally reaches the more remote corners that I figure will keep happening until a vaccine is on board. I think the vaccine is due sometime 2021 spring or summer? Another thing that arrives before Dragon Age 4. Come on Bioware /s edit add: Americans need to be prepared for the possibility that COVID-19 could become a seasonal disease, Dr. Anthony Fauci warned Wednesday. Fauci told reporters during a White House briefing that more cases of the disease caused by the novel coronavirus have begun to appear in the Southern Hemisphere, which is transitioning into colder seasons.
If there is an outbreak in the Southern Hemisphere, Fauci said "it will be inevitable" that the disease will make a comeback even if it is temporarily stopped.
New studies show that warm, humid weather might slow the virus — which could mean the pandemic will ease in the coming summer months in North America and Europe.
But Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a prominent member of the White House's coronavirus task force, said America needs to be ready in case it comes back in the fall.
"I know we'll be successful in putting this down now, but we really need to be prepared for another cycle," Fauci said.
He added that the current steps being taken, such as fast-tracking potential vaccines and drug treatments, will be essential to stopping the virus a second time.
TAGS CORONAVIRUS ANTHONY S. FAUCI NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF ALLERGY AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES The Hill, Dr. FauciMy office is currently closed until mid-May, and I'm seeing a lot of "60 day" restrictions on the news. That seems about right for a "lockdown" - ~15 days incubation, ~15 days for symptoms to run their course, ~15 days to be contagious after symptoms, then ~15 days to be safe. Afterwards tho… years of new government guidelines and people on the internet being insufferable about social contact? P.S. Well, shit, I just licked a return envelope I got in the mail to seal it. Better hit the Listerine. P.P.S Oh hell, NY Gov Cuomo just said people who end up on ventilators because of COVID-19 are on it (in contrast to the flu for 3-4 days) for 11 to 21 days!

I would probably recommend most 90s romcoms and comedies... Richard Gere stuff my mom has always enjoyed. Recently over Christmas my mom and I watched this 2015 old men road trip movie with Robert Redford and Nick Nolte that felt 100% like we're back in the 90s again. "A Walk in the Woods". It was pleasant enough and not too heavy handed on the life lessons. Not great, not bad. So perfectly acceptable as far as we were concerned.

Two members of my family caught the coronavirus. The first is an old uncle over 65 years old, deputy president of an evangelical church. Of course a lot of folks gathered in churchs and coming from a lot of places, that made it easier for the virus. One individual with the coronavirus able to transmit to others around him. Now all these people have to be found in the whole region and have to be contacted, so they could be screened by Coronavirus's test. Won't be easy. Probably a lot are having the same issues right now. My uncle fell ill and it suddenly and brutally accelerated, after a week or two, coughing first a little. His boss and friend, the president of the evangical church who fell ill at the same time as him, died two days ago. For the moment my uncle's health has stabilized. But he is far from being cured. The second case is my cousin's boyfriend, half german- half algerian, only 37 years old, but he had lung disease a few months ago, so that might explain why he is touched ( though it is demonstrated that even young people could catch the virus even with a good health. ) He was diagnosed positive for the virus ten days ago, but other than a cold, weakness and a few coughs, there was little to worry about so far. The doctors told him to remain at home and to take care of himself. Yesterday, his health suddenly and brutally declined, he had trouble breathing, now he's in the hospital, with a breathing mask. Obviously we can't visit them right now, and we are now waiting for more news. I'm sorry to hear that. Best wishes to your family and to you.

My 90 year old mother likes to watch Downton Abbey, anything Jane Austen and Harry Potter (only the first 2 movies).
I watched Ladybird and liked it. There's also Little Women. Or maybe your mom would like a movie from the 60's or 70's like The Sting or Murder on the Orient Express. Robert Redford and Paul Newman movies were pretty good. Or the Beatles.

I mostly work from home, so I've barely been financially affected.
But everyone I live with and 80% of my friends are event techies, so most of them haven't had work or pay in 3-4 weeks since public gatherings were banned or cancelled.
Sadly, most of them still have weeks to go before any government assistance could even possibly be available for them. I'm trying to buy as many groceries to go around as I can, but it really isn't enough.

If you're willing to torrent, Carol Burnett Show (there may be other ways, I don't know which of the streaming services currently hosts episodes.) The 1970s didn't offer a lot that can entertain multiple generations, but Carol Burnett's show was an exception. I hadn't thought of it in years, but on YooToob I watched the infamous "Tim Conway Elephant Story" sketch (I don't think it ever actually aired on network TV because it has swearz) after seeing a Vicky Lawrence interview about it and it reminded me of how funny those people were.

I got tested this morning! They seem to have distributed testkits to local practices to be applied as they seem fit in the meantime. A week ago nobody in the area, not even the hospital, had any. Huh. So I was allowed to be tested. I didn't even have to ask. Doc said we're doing it because we can. It's kind of pointless at this point in terms of quarantine because by Monday when they might have a result I'm probably not infections anymore anyway. But good to know in general. If I've had it I can visit people again and not worry about it. Also might be relevant for my mom in case she starts to feel off soon. Doctor said it's either the flu, a very rare bad common cold or corona. My lungs are still perfectly fine though. So there's nothing to worry about in any case. The flu can make even young people barely able to climb stairs like myself for weeks. Boy, if I'm negative I'll get a flu shot for the first time in my life next season. This sure has been a shitshow! He said corona isn't really more dangerous, youngish people die of the flu as well sometimes, it's just a lot more contageous and that's why it's overwhelming the medical systems of countries less prepared than Germany. The numbers are the problem, not the mortality rate itself under ideal (!) circumstances. As long as I might be contagious I should wear my construction work paper mask we still got from handling asbestos when I go shopping. I wore it at the doctor's. It's really difficult to breathe in those, ugh. To protect others mainly. But no need to live in fear. Really calmed me down. Btw my medical thermometer is broken after all. Instead of 36.9C I have 37.9, lol. That's still not a fever. So I either have a feverless flu or feverless corona. Sure is weird...

I second Legends of the Fall. It's soft enough for anyone a little bit delicate but edgy enough for everyone else. It's a fine line.

I really love the sets and the general art style of that film. And Sigourney Weaver is strangely hot with a shaven head.

Yes, you're probably going to roll your eyes at the B-movie quality, but it's hard for me not to love it when keeping Alien in the back of my mind. Also the costuming is great!

They just showed a interview of a doctor working in one of our hospitals, he said that he cannot confirm the claim that only the elderly become critical cases, he has just as many people under the age 40 who are critical. He also said that the more aggressive version of the virus is spreading rapidly, resulting in more cases that need to be treated in the intensive care units, and ultimately increasing the death toll.

Got a text from work. Officially laid off next week, will advice next Friday about the following week. Which I'm sure we'll have off because Chrysler and Toyota, our customers are off until mid April. Perhaps I'll go into detail on my "mystery" illness I suffered last month, later today. Because from what I read about COVID, it sure looked like it was COVID. But it wasn't suppose to be in the States at that time, much less some hick town in the Midwest.

Maybe once they roll out antibody quick tests you can still get confirmation that you've had it already. I'm pretty sure the virus has quietly been spreading long before governments responded. I mean, this has been going on in China since last year and people travel. Even small town people travel...

Damn, Syv, that's tough. Are you in one of the current hot spots, or is this really out of the blue? My uncle worked in a church, and the boyfriend of my cousin in a hostel, both places full of people coming from anyplace, anywhere in France, strangers included. And we are in Paris, the french's capital, the most populated. In such centralized country, it is of course one of the hot spots overall. All french regions are touched by the virus anyway. It is certain they almost all caught the virus way before the lockdown. A lot of people were unaware and ignorant of anything before the President Macron's decree. Also France has beaten the reccord of youth, a young adolescent, Julie died yesterday, she was 16 years old with a good health and without any particular disease. ----- Anyway, thanks to everyone for the support. That was very nice. I wish I could give better news.. My uncle is dead. It happened this morning. Though the doctors told us earlier his health had stabilized and he could still talk a few days ago. That didn't last long. He was old, but died alone, without anyone at his side, without anyone being able to visit him. Which is probably the saddest thing. I was adolescent the last time I saw that old but very gentle man. I gave my condoleance to his daughter like everyone else in my family. I haven't talked to her for years.... And for the first time I talk to her since then... it's all about the death of her father. Not really classy, not really easy. Awkward. We were not really close all these years, death brought us together again. Irony of life. On the good news, the baby of a close friend is born today too, this afternoon, a little girl. That put some warm in my heart. Take care of yourselves and your families. Be careful, that virus must not be taken lightly even if there are only a few " official " cases in your country. I still see too many unconscious behaviors like it happened in some french popular areas like " Saint Denis ". Two weeks ago in that city, a lot of folks didn't respect the lockdown, still out there for days, without taking any basic precautionary measure for them or even their children, forced by policemen to come back to their home. There is now an astonishing number of cases in these areas.
