Damn, Syv, that's tough. Are you in one of the current hot spots, or is this really out of the blue? My uncle worked in a church, and the boyfriend of my cousin in a hostel, both places full of people coming from anyplace, anywhere in France, strangers included. And we are in Paris, the french's capital, the most populated. In such centralized country, it is of course one of the hot spots overall. All french regions are touched by the virus anyway. It is certain they almost all caught the virus way before the lockdown. A lot of people were unaware and ignorant of anything before the President Macron's decree. Also France has beaten the reccord of youth, a young adolescent, Julie died yesterday, she was 16 years old with a good health and without any particular disease. ----- Anyway, thanks to everyone for the support. That was very nice. I wish I could give better news.. My uncle is dead. It happened this morning. Though the doctors told us earlier his health had stabilized and he could still talk a few days ago. That didn't last long. He was old, but died alone, without anyone at his side, without anyone being able to visit him. Which is probably the saddest thing. I was adolescent the last time I saw that old but very gentle man. I gave my condoleance to his daughter like everyone else in my family. I haven't talked to her for years.... And for the first time I talk to her since then... it's all about the death of her father. Not really classy, not really easy. Awkward. We were not really close all these years, death brought us together again. Irony of life. On the good news, the baby of a close friend is born today too, this afternoon, a little girl. That put some warm in my heart. Take care of yourselves and your families. Be careful, that virus must not be taken lightly even if there are only a few " official " cases in your country. I still see too many unconscious behaviors like it happened in some french popular areas like " Saint Denis ". Two weeks ago in that city, a lot of folks didn't respect the lockdown, still out there for days, without taking any basic precautionary measure for them or even their children, forced by policemen to come back to their home. There is now an astonishing number of cases in these areas. So sorry for your loss! Take care of yourself, please!

Syv My condolances to you and your family. Living up here in the cold barren wasteland of northern europe (it is not THAT bad really but compared to Paris...) for once is a kind of help but the virus spreads anyway. So anyway, we keep to ourselves a little more and desinfect a lot more.

Got a text from work. Officially laid off next week, will advice next Friday about the following week. Which I'm sure we'll have off because Chrysler and Toyota, our customers are off until mid April. Perhaps I'll go into detail on my "mystery" illness I suffered last month, later today. Because from what I read about COVID, it sure looked like it was COVID. But it wasn't suppose to be in the States at that time, much less some hick town in the Midwest. Maybe once they roll out antibody quick tests you can still get confirmation that you've had it already. I'm pretty sure the virus has quietly been spreading long before governments responded. I mean, this has been going on in China since last year and people travel. Even small town people travel... Mystery illness started on Superbowl weekend. Friday I felt something going down, sore throat and when I went to bed at night, kept hacking. My sinuses kept draining. No sleep on Friday night. Saturday more of the same except the sinus drain. Sunday, fever hit and hit big. I wish I had a thermometer because I know my temperature was easily over 100 degrees. I was sweating, my face was hot, my body was hot and I was starting to find it hard to think straight eventually. I got a cold wet wash cloth and kept it on my face. Fever started to ease up a little, not much but better than boiling over.
Monday was the same as Sunday but I went to work any way. Tired AF because of no decent sleep since last Thursday. Tuesday the fever was there but not as bad as Sunday and Monday. It was probably 99 or so. I say that because when I went to the doctor Friday it was 99 something and that's how I felt temperature wise from Wednesday to Friday. Still no sleep, dead tired but couldn't sleep. Wednesday I started to feel winded now. Staying in place I was fine but if I started to walk around or do something take parts out of a container (I'm an auditor so checking parts for shipment is part of the job.) I got winded.
Thursday, enough was enough with no sleep, so I called my boss to see if I could use a vacation day on Thursday so I could get some sleep and deal with this bug that has got me. I got it off, great. Also this day I found out the meaning of having a hard time to breath. Since it snowed, I have to keep the walk way cleaned around my home. I made the effort to start to shovel snow, it wasn't heavy or anything, just fluffy snow, a few minutes of that and I found it hard to breath. Ok, I'm done with this, screw the walkway and went back inside to sleep the rest of the day. That didn't happen, just tossed and turned.
Friday, felt the same as Thursday, called boss to see if I could use another vacation day. (I'm using vacation days because I can't afford less than 40hr check plus I didn't want to ruin my perfect attendance.) Got it off. Other than my boss I hadn't told anyone about being sick. I thought it was the cold/flu mutation type thing I usually get, well at first. I told my mom about what has been going on. She said I need to go to the doctors. After much arm twisting I decided fine, go see the doctor. I hate doctors.
Told the doctor my situation. They gave me tests and an x-ray for pneumonia which was confirmed in what I got. I had it in my left lung. Didn't get any test for flu or anything like that. They gave me prescriptions for antibiotics for the pneumonia and to return if the breathing got worse in regards to the pneumonia. Which it didn't. The doctor told me that there had been a lot of cases of a flu like bug with pneumonia. Guess they didn't put two and two together that all those cases and mine could have been COVID. But then again this was February and a lot of info about it wasn't out not to mention it was just "confined" in China at that time. Got my prescriptions filled and finally I was able to sleep Friday night for the first time since last Thursday. My breathing started to get better and I felt my usual self a few weeks later.
And now that the information about COVID is out, it sounds like something I had, probably thousands of others and just didn't know we had it. They say its contagious and I find that strange. My fellow quality auditor co-workers never got sick during the time I was sick with this mystery illness. I was within talking distance of them, touch equipment they touched, touched tables and such that they touched. Same goes with other co-workers, I touched doors, sinks, equipment and never heard of them coming down with something I had. My 60+ year old mother never got sick. I was in close proximity with her since she took me to the doctors that Friday. I can't confirm I had COVID since no test was done, COVID wasn't the hot thing like it is now, but the info I read sounds like it was. I may be from a hick town but I work near a city, one that has an international airport. Plus the truckers that come by to pick up our shipment of parts are international/interstate truckers since we send parts to Canada and other states. So that's one way I could have got it.
That's my take on the mystery illness I had in the first part of February.
*I've never been this sick since I was a child. Its something I don't want to repeat.

House Targaryen Glad you are feeling better now. I'm no expert but I do know, antibiotics won't help a viral infection, and it sounds like the prescription you got did help you recover. Also good that no one else you were in contact with got the same thing. It's scary though....any little thing feels off and you have to wonder if this is what you have. Are you really sick are or are you just so freaked out about the possibility of getting sick and that in itself causes symptoms that then make you actually sick? There aren't a lot of confirmed cases in my area but the number has increased exponentially the last 2 days so I'm getting to the point where I may just decide to work from home after all. The fact I still have to go out and about for groceries is annoying though, and I'm not looking forward to scouring the entire area for TP since my normal shop stops still haven't had any that last couple times I picked up other stuff.

Could be my own defenses finally kicked in as well.

Well my getting over the pneumonia part could have been my own immune system kicking in if it happened to be viral. Can't say I enjoyed the side effects those antibacterial drugs had.

Could be my own defenses finally kicked in as well. Not all illnesses are named after infection that cause it (like flu) but rather by its location in body/symptoms it produces (like tonsilitis, laryngitis, pneumonia, meningitis, encephalitis and so on). Bacteria are the most common cause of pneumonia.

Bill Gates warned us back in 2015: My dad showed this to me a few weeks ago; provocative, interesting....and yet scary stuff. Bill Gates is a very smart, intelligent man, there's no doubt of that. But to think that even someone in his position could see the warning signs and knew something like this was going to happen sooner or later.....knew that we were not ready but told us to prepare- yet we did nothing.....That is scary. And unfortunate. If only we listened....

Hopefully we will get our lesson form this pandemic and will be more prepared for the next one.

For sure, SkekSil. Don't get me wrong, there are and have been viruses, diseases, pandemics far more serious.....Still, to your point "hopefully we will get out lesson and be prepared....." That was exactly Bill Gates' point in the video, except that we didn't learn-- and still haven't. And to your point about the 'small mortality rate', that too is unfortunate. Although to some extent it could be validly argued that our world is becoming too over-populated and world wide pandemics and diseases, things of this nature are Nature's way of controlling the population....It remains that any loss of life is unfortunate as all life is valuable and has value.
