Clearly, there's a market for it. There's not nearly enough of a market for all these games. While ME3MP is technically alive, it is no longer that huge revenue stream it used to be. The Battlefield/Battlefront games failed on their monetization fronts, EA's biggest hit in years was Fallen Order, a single player only game with no MTX and the other "good" hit has been Apex Legends, a F2P battle royal game that makes its money entirely from the grace of its community. It's good money. It's really good money. But it's the only game EA has of its kind. Outside of sports games. EA has had a string of failures. Or, if you don't like "failures", at the very least, misses. There is a market for it, but it doesn't seem to be as big as EA would like it to be. I'm surprised that EA is still standing at this point.

I'm surprised that EA is still standing at this point. They make a billion out of each Madden and Fifa every year. But EA doesn't have a hold in the traditional gaming segments. At least, hasn't had one for a few years now.

At least, hasn't had one for a few years now. I think they have plenty of grasps into the traditional market, at least not much different the other major publishers. Since they have Battlefield and now Apex Legends, not to mention the impact that Battlefront 2 seems to have had with people upset that the game will no longer have paid DLC (to the point Jim Sterling did an episode about people begging more more). Other publishers don't seem to dominate in that space either for its a more game by game market now.

Since they have Battlefield Battlefield V failed on multiple fronts. It was a disappointment on release and it never really recovered. While it does have a dedicated fanbase, V didn't bring in the revenue of previous titles. Remember, we were hearing before its release that it was trailing as far as 80% behind the competition. As DICE challenged its fanbase, they didn't buy it. Apex Legends was their only hit, after three, if recall correctly, failed launches, 4, if you count Anthem, which had also released close to that date. They were really lucky Respawn was there for them, but from what I hear, most of the people that made Respawn have already left Respawn and made yet another studio, without Zampella this time, though. We'll see how Respawn does from now on. not to mention the impact that Battlefront 2 seems to have had with people upset that the game will no longer have paid DLC (to the point Jim Sterling did an episode about people begging more more) Battlefront 2, while sticking closer to its roadmap, still didn't outdo the previous Battlefront 2 in content and gameplay and the live service ran for two and a half years. It's a good game, great even, it didn't outdo the original. DICE did give it their best shot at it and that's all that anyone could ask of them. It's a shame what happened to it, from release to EoL. Other publishers don't seem to dominate in that space either for its a more game by game market now. Activision has its market locked down with CoD still, Rockstar still has a grasp on a large part of the gaming crowd with GTA and RDR online, Bungie is doing great with Destiny 2, Ubisoft still has a large player base on Division 2, which I have also picked up, there's Warframe cornering the Anthem market, that Anthem failed to capture. Fortnite is still bigger than Apex Legends. I fail to see EA "dominating", as you put it. They're competitive, but I wouldn't say dominating. Not by a long shot.

I never said EA was dominating, what I said was I don't think anyone is dominating that space and I think you pointed that out well. All the publishers and developers you listed have a game and it does well in the area it follows in, but I don't see a developer or publisher with two drastically different games that people are playing. In many ways EA dominates sports games the way other publishers will like Activision dominate FPS or Rockstar with their open world games. Edit: the only thing I would disagree with is Division 2. Unless people just hide when I go play it, on the PC unless its a week into new content the game is dead. I have had people say anecdotally that they have an easier time finding groups with Anthem (no evidence just comments). Ubisoft had a big spike in players, but a lot of the long term players are saying its because they reduced the game to $3 just before the expansion.

I'm playing with exactly 4 friends, so I wouldn't know. And we just started. Like, we're casual players and only play once a week or two. We just made level 5. So, I don't have any incentive to party with other people. Division 2 is still in the most played list. Anthem is still nowhere in sight.

The interesting thing to me about that list is Fallout 76 is on it. They made a similarly catastrophically bad entry into the field around the same time. They recovered.
I actually enjoyed it at launch but I'm one of the few that thought no NPCs was a good thing as it helped reinforce the creepy nature of the setting. But, by and large everyone hated everything about the game and especially hated no NPCs. They listed to peoples complaints and rebounded from the bottom. anthem just flops around on the bottom barely changing anything. Maybe they will make big enough changes in the rest of the year or 2021, I kind of doubt it.

Well, Fallout 76 actually never left the most played list. As far as I can remember, at least. It's still a shit game, but a shit game that has been consistently played.

Bethesda lucked out that the community managed to coalesce into something meaningful in that dumpster fire. Their ineptitude, tremendous as it is, wasn’t enough to totally kill it.

According to Steam it seems to get 30,000 concurrent players. That's pretty decent considering that doesn't count consoles.

As many of you can find it hard to believe, I love Mass Effect Trilogy Prove it. You've never posted anything positive about any game from Bioware, so prove it and share what you liked about it enough to say you love it. We loved it until Mass Effect 3 ruined it.

Well, we could also thank EA for that. They've rushed BioWare by giving them 2 years to finish up ME3, instead if allowing them to take their time to make it. That's why ME3 looks like it's been rushed.

In the end I only care about what we got and that it was fucked. I don't doubt for a moment that it was the best game that they could make in 18 months and I argued with Allan Schumacher back in the day with this, but there is no award for "best game made in 18 months". In the end, if the division of the fanbase was what the game wanted to achieve, it did it brilliantly. 8 years later and we're still going on about it. Meanwhile, Disney is already thinking of decanonizing the SW sequel trilogy.

Mass Effect 3 didn't ruin anything. Get over yourselves. You can say that, but ME:A proves that a lot of people gave up on it. So many, in fact, that the franchise died. So something happened and nothing was as big as the ME3 ending debacle to justify such a huge drop in attendance.

We loved it until Mass Effect 3 ruined it. Mass Effect 3 didn't ruin anything. Get over yourselves. Arguably the most controversial ending in video gaming history didn't ruin it? lol. Take off the rose tinted glasses. The ending was absolutely garbage. The damage to the brand has already been done. Even the most average player can realize how non-sensical the writing is in ME3 pertaining to justifying the Catalyst's "logic".

Even the most average player can realize how non-sensical the writing is in ME3 pertaining to justifying the Catalyst's "logic". It was kind of incredible how vitriolic people got about it. Time and tweaks via the Extended Cut tempered a lot of the hard feelings, but I suspect that if the EC didn’t exist, we might not be as fond of the trilogy as fans in general seem to be now. I know for certain that I’d never touch it again, because fuck that ending.

Even the most average player can realize how non-sensical the writing is in ME3 pertaining to justifying the Catalyst's "logic". The problem is the opposite of that though, the ending was too logical and divorced from the space opera cultivated around it. I always likened it to a 2001: A Space Odyssey Ending added to a Star Wars movie for that reason, a ton of symbolism, ambiguous decision making, seeing the hubris and limitations of organic and synthetic life fall into one singular moment and making a choice that leads to the deification of shepard in one of four ways, some more overt than others. Not perfect by any means, but considering how Drew K wrote them into a corner with the reapers ambiguous nature in the first place, I honestly wasn't sure what folks were expecting to happen in the ending other than some really terrible fanfic stuff I saw at the time where Shepard lived and we get the disney treatment.

Big words from someone who has never written anything in his life
