So yesterday was determined to get to Lundun to move the story forward but decided to not Fast Travel but to clear stuff along the line of travel. Well I got to Lundun just and I think this highlights my biggest gripe with the game and that is that there is too much time soak and grindy stuff. When I started my 4hrs of play yesterday there were perhaps ten Opals on a fairly direct route, a book of knowledge, 3 or 4 Mysteries and a couple of wealth things. Completing them took the majority of 4 hours as I also hunted bears and Reindeer for at least 45 minutes to an hour. It is not satisfying every time you want to collect an opal to have to spend between 12 minutes and 10 minutes trying to get to it. It is not fun to spend 15 minutes in a mystery just to escort to people to a spring so they can be best buddies, it is not a fun to hunt Reindeer for half an hour to get 1 set of Antlers, it is not fun to travel to an Opal spot find your way in then not be able to interact with it, it's not fun to have to climb up, left, right and then discover you have to go down to shoot the piece of wood at the top to be able to get to the wealth and it's not fun to do this HUNDREDS of Times. Anyway that's enough of that so ground my way south and got to Lundun. Here is the opal I cannot interact with, has anyone else had a problem or knows the solution to this, it's the last thing I need to clear in whatever area it is? I tried hitting it with an axe, shooting an exploding arrow at it and climbing on the shelf it is on, I also tried cursing at it but that didn't work either I think you're giving opals and hunting too much priority. If I see an opal along the way, I'll get it. If I can't get it, I go my way. I don't bother hunting bears and elk. The latter for antlers because the drop rate is so poor. I kill the animals if they're in my way. I'm not sure why your undertaking of mysteries can take as long as 15 minutes. If it's to carry people, I call the horse, throw the NPC on them and ride. If it's escort and they're on foot, I call my horse and wait to see if the NPC hops on. If they do, goody. Whether they do or don't, I usually gauge their intended location from the dialogue or if I'm not sure, I look up YT then ride to the location. The NPC tend to follow / run along. I'll usually run into the problem / attackers first, if there's one, and take care of it. If it's something like carry a crate of apples, the mount would not work of course. It doesn't take long anyway. My play style is to clear the map as I proceed through the game. That is when I started in Ledestercire I clear Ledesterscire before I move on, my complaint is they have made the minor tasks too grindy FOR ME. In Odyssey pretty sure I never complained about clearing the map because it was not a chore. It's how I play and for me it has made the game a grind and it also highlights to me that this is to bloat the game as the story components are already a very small part of my time in game and in that way it is not dis-similar to DAI. I have played 121hrs and progressed the game 53% and I'd say the maximum amount of story content would be 20% of my total hours. This does not mean I think the game or the story is bad it's just a comment on how I feel about the way the game has been designed and it's affect on how I want to play it.

Did anyone else have trouble with that Opal above? Do you have a pic of the shelf it's on? I can't seem to find one there, which may mean I've already picked it up. It looks black as I shot an exploding arrow at it, it just looks like any normal shelf. It seems like the opal is just above the normal reach height but if I climb on the stuff near it I am too high.

I wrapped up Oxenefordscire about an hour ago. I switched back to default Eivor, really wanting to experience the female lead. It lasted 10 minutes. Sigh. I should probably accept that the VA just isn't for me and let it go. I ditched my shield and went back to two-handed axe for a while. It's just so good. It's effective and I like some of the moveset. I then swapped to Housecarl Axe + Varin's Axe for a time. It's fun, but I missed my heavy hits just crushing through elite defenses. I'm really wishing we had transmog already. My focus starts to wane once I've completed the first PT and lack difference-makers in my second. I will probably keep plugging away until the seasonal content arrives, and likely even until I again complete the game. After that, I'll shelve this until the features I want are added. I experienced my first bug, today. One of the treasures in Oxenefordscire, found at the Ruined Temple of Something (where we rally with Geadric pre-siege) is inaccessible. I looted the key but can't open the chest. I hope this doesn't preclude my completionist trophy. Sigh. I am starting to think this game is too buggy for most of us to get 100% any time soon. dazk, there are a number of opals in the game that can't be accessed. That looks like the one outside Waldon. There is another located on some rocks, suspended 20m in the sky, in the far north. Reda's prices aren't high enough to stress it. 😉

FYI I have used Housecarl and Varin's Axes pretty much the whole game, I like them and I like the look of Eivor with two bearded axes one on each side like a gunslinger.

It's possible that the main story is longer than you think Before I forced myself to do a bit of roaming, I was getting around 1% per hour on average. I'm now at 84% and 98 hours, with the "extra" hours accounting for hunting down zealots, finding hidden ones bureaus, sync points I missed while in an area, and various other mysteries. ------------------- I did part of Jotunheim today. I don't know why I don't enjoy the mythical stuff, but even though I can't pinpoint anything specifically wrong with it, I can't wait to get back to Eivor. Am I going to need all those gems or crystals or whatever they are in Jotunheim? Otherwise I'm not going to bother collecting them.

It's entirely subjective, but I feel that Valhalla is the least grindy game in the series.
The collectibles are there, but you can safely ignore them if you don't enjoy the collecting. I like the added challenge. It makes it feel much less like filler than the typical AC setup of hundreds of unattended chests inexplicably waiting to be looted. Having them secured behind locked doors or creatively stashed by their owners makes the world feel more real.
The world events are short, small-scale encounters that only take a couple of minutes and little to no travel. I think they add character and depth to the world, and I mostly prefer them to traditional side quests.
I enjoy the exploration in Valhalla to about the same degree as any AC game. It's cool, pretty relaxing. I mostly track the story missions, and grab the events and loot as the story takes me to an area.
If you pre-loot and pre-explore everything in this game, you'll effectively double your playtime and create your own grind. I can't recall a single region to which the story didn't take me on its own. We eventually go everywhere. Maybe Mjolnir's location is the one exception. I located that while exploring a bit, but was near a major story event area and had Mjolnir specifically in mind.
Again, I'm not trying to dictate anyone's gameplay style. I just think AC fans have been trained into obsessive-compulsive collectors; and that this particular AC plays far better if we turn down the dial on the open world OCD*.
* Also not trying to be casual about real OCD. I live with person who has it. It sucks terribly for me, to be honest. I can't imagine how it must be for her.
I sneaked in an extra 20 minutes this evening. I built Torben's bakery. (Is that his name?) I changed up Eivor's beard and hair, just trying to add some variety. I also built some farms and the fishing hut. The fisher kid is so loud and obnoxious.
I saved outside Valka's home. It's probably past time I visit Asgard. I think it will go faster this time, as I apply the lessons I learned last PT and have already discussed above. I'll stick to the story and collect the Tears when I'm in the area.
I'm still missing Transmog a lot. The way saves were deleted when I started a NG makes me nervous about NG+. Shades of Unity, it was. They may not intend for this game to support NG+. We'll see.

Yeah, it's a odd setup. There are exactly enough Raw Materials in the game to get your settlement to Level 6, but considerably more Supplies. Supplies that can't be used for anything else... Well I am hoping that I get Raw Materials from advancing the story as my settlement is stuck ta about 5.5 and there are no raids left form me to do. I still have at least 2 maybe 3 upgrades to upgrades on the cattle and grain farm I think. I warned you that you couldn't hit Level 6 by pre-exploring. 😉 You cannot get there until essentially the end of the story. Part of the progress is tied to Pledge Rewards. It's not just material rewards, but also a Settlement+ reward. It reflects Raventhorpe's growth in reputation and renown, beyond simply building stuff.

I ran into a group of bards fronted by a man named Keith with a very distinct haircut who were looking to bring music to this jilted generation. A bishop tried to stop them from playing their songs, which seemed a shame since every one of them seemed to be quite the prodigy. Maybe he thought they were some kind of voodoo people?
So anyway, long story short: I beat the shit out of a priest.
Smack my bishop!

I also enjoyed the Cavern of Trials. I did that just the other day BUT 5 SKILL POINTS!!!!!! I could never pass that up. Lol I don't even redeem my skill points immediately anymore. I have most of the skills that are actually useful with the way I'm playing (Raven gear, almost exclusively fast attacks, Dive of the Valkeries, ranged attacks, the explosive arrow ability, and guaranteed assassination), so the rest at this point are things I mostly don't use anyway. I am unsure whether the "stealth" skill helps Eivor stay undetected or just contributes to the lethality of stealth attacks, which would be moot for me.

Stinking Reda sent me all over England today. I got a contract in Suthsexe and another in Central. I've not been anywhere near those areas yet, and I was pledged to Sciropescire. Ugh. I sailed to southern England and fast traveled back, something I rarely do.
I think I'll go to Vinland and then Asgard, next. Time to break up the routine and all that. I'm finally starting to get Rare Runes, again. Ravensthorpe is one improvement from level 5, which is when merchants start selling Rares, if I recall correctly.

I'm actually missing Valhalla, believe it or not. I dislike the cyberpunk music (it's not my cup of tea, metal electrical zing zangs, the beat, screaming whatever) in Cyberpunk so I toned it down to almost nothing. I'm disincline to explore the city with the car because it's not easy to navigate the city streets; the car moves at a snail pace because I'm prone to hitting stuff turning corners and it's a bit unwieldy. I can beat it to the destination by walking. I wanted to whistle up the horse but there's no horse. I can't see the MC. I'm fine with 3rd person view. It's just that not seeing the char is like missing something essential. *shrug* Missing that; oooh, the char look so awesome!
