I mean, it doesn't really bother me, I'm just not sure why. I guess it's handy for those who don't end up liking one or the other after playing some time. A quick gender swap is easier than starting all over again. I know Monster Hunter World allows you to gender swap as well (although not as freely). This is also new and peculiar to me. I don't think I'd want to do that. It will throw me out of the char immersion. It's female or male all the way for a PT, then switch over for another PT. I wonder if they would add NG+ later. Yeah, my initial reaction was based on - incorrectly, as it turns out - assuming that we’d be pressured or forced to do it, at least once. If it’s just there for people who aren’t “feeling it” with their first choice for Eivor, that’s a different story (and totally fine).

An rather lukewarm preview by Dimitry Halley from gamestar.de (in German). TLDR - Pros: - improved combat with more enemy and boss variety - raids are big, fun spectacles - neither Vikings nor English are the good/bad guys, Eivor has his/her own goals - much reduced loot grind (possibly as a reaction to GR:B tanking) - great Viking atmosphere Cons: - a bigger but less rewarding skill tree with a "fog of war" that prevents you from seeing the end of the skill branches - reduced, boring open world activities - shorter, simpler open world side quests ("Witcher 3 in super-lite without sugar or a reduced Odyssey") - very few stealth opportunities

Darn, they're releasing too close together. Two days apart?! September would have been a good month for Valhalla. Between Valhalla and Cyberpunk, well, the latter wins. I'm playing that first. I had just one wish for these two - that we'd have at least one month between them. And this happens... For me, Valhalla edges out Cyberpunk, but I'm hoping Valhalla's overarching narrative and how that ties in with the Hidden Ones & Order of the Ancients is more interesting than what we've seen so far. The Oswald plotline was alright, but nothing special really. CP2077 is very likely to hit another delay. I also prefer Valhalla right now and will go to CP2077 only after I finish at least one PT. Enough time for the worst launch bugs to be fixed from CD Project. 😁

It'll give me more time to save up.

Simpler side quests than Odyssey? If true, that is a huge step back for me. His example was "fetch a girl's lost pony". You could see the pony standing there, about a dozen meters away. Feed a few orphans in the woods, just like in the Witcher 3, but with less story around it.

How are the AC worlds compared to Bethesda worlds? I mean in terms of pacing in between encounters - and by that I don't just mean combat encounters but ppl to meet and places to discover. Sometimes they go hand in hand altogether but not always.

CP2077 and Bloodlines 2 are my priority but I don't expect Bloodlines 2 this year at this point. How are the AC worlds compared to Bethesda worlds? I mean in terms of pacing in between encounters - and by that I don't just mean combat encounters but ppl to meet and places to discover. Sometimes they go hand in hand altogether but not always. AC worlds are made as if they were real world simulation with tons of nobodies whom you can't/won't interact with like in real life, ton of buildings you can't enter and a focus on dealing with defended structures (fort, camp, houses) to reach your objectives. You interact with a few select recurrent NPCs in the game despite the amount of bodies in it and it's more about completing content (main/side quests/POI) in a quest hub fashion model (especially Origins and Odyssey). The spacing between encounters is entirely based on how long it takes you to go from point A to B (and sometimes it's very long in Odyssey when at sea). Bethesda gameworlds are small simulation where every NPCs have a name and can be interacted with, every building can be entered, most stuff laying around can be played with and the focus is on "dungeon" exploration and adventuring. Or doing whatever you want at any time. Content spacing really depends on what you define as content...

Usually I determine a landmark or region as destination and then go. Sometimes I want to find alternative route. Or gether some loot. Or just see what happens. That works really well in Bethesda games. In TW3 not so much - it was more story-driven, I feel. That worked great, too, but I like Bethesda-like pacing and world design best.

You find things going "off-path" in the AC games more than you do in TW3. It's just not as interactive as Bethesda games are and can be repetitive. Valhalla seems to add finding notes and puzzles thought. That should be an improvement.

It's just not as interactive as Bethesda games are and can be repetitive. Valhalla seems to add finding notes and puzzles thought. That should be an improvement. Is it just enemy spawns plonked down or is it crafted case by case for a player venturing. Often the path isn't clear and you have to search it (unless you cheat or exploit). Distance between points of interest and the mix of different types of encounters / discoveries is key here.
I guess the viking AC is gonna play in sparsely populated area. Kingdom Come Deliverance was the same. Hubs of PoIs in between fields and forests. But the world wasn't actually too big. For a hiker on foot it was not the ideal density of encounters. It felt more like the horse interconnecting islands of activities rather than organic discovery. That can work out, but I rather prefer density made for legwork.

Wonder how they are going to force everyone to like her, especially after FoA. Really? I like Layla. I'd have no issue with more Layla content. And on a separate matter, I'm looking forward to going to where I live, I've not been able to do that in a game before. I liked her until she did things like like murder her friend for her next fix and give a villain monologue as she crippled Otso Berg.

Looks like they brought back AC1 fear mechanic for Valhalla (weak enemies flee if you murder their friends in front of them). Also, the not!Kassandra has the Assassin's logo on her belt.

They are complaining the game has no stealth because there is no large cities to parkour around in the area they had access to. It had none of the 3 large cities of the game, it's basically all fields and forest. You can do the "take over Rued's castle and kill him" entirely by stealth, including one-shot assassinating him, while the rest of "your army" is attacking the front gate. You can clear raids by stealth too. I even read that you can one-shot assassinate higher power area enemies too (you still have to succeed at the QTE). Actually, I'm starting think people complaining about the parkour and stealth are actually complaining it is too hard to pull off instead of the basically easy braindeadness of the previous games. And by previous games, I mean pre-Origins.

When you assassinate something that has more health than your assassination damage (so something with higher power or a boss) you need to succeed at a check. That check is to click the button only when two things align in the UI. If you succeed, the enemy is one-shot killed, if you fail, you take a huge amount of HP away from them. Hrungr posted an example here.

Environment puzzles like these are always a bit of head scratcher, but you see them in a lot of games. On the one hand, I'm glad there are little puzzles like these (finding a way into a barred door house). But on the other hand you look at these windows with a few slats of wood tacked on and this doesn't exactly present itself as an imposing obstacle. Realistically, it would nothing to just tap a few boards out and hop in through any of the windows. And yet destroying a wooden door bar with an arrow is somehow the right way to enter. Although it looks like you can at least break the stain glass windows in this one. I've seen gameplay where it's used to your advantage. Shoot a couple of windows out, then steath-grab-assassinate targets inside from the outside.
