They've totally been setting up the Qunari as the "good guys" who just have a few well-meaning extremists among their number. I admit I don't see it that set up.. Trespasser didn't really gave that impression, especially if Iron Bull is still part of it, and the little bit in Veilguard don't exactly makes me thing they're going to be good. But we'll see soon enough, I guess. Yeah, they literally decide to preemptively plan an invasion because of the breach and it's obvious they only disavowed themselves because the Viddasala lost.

On a positive note, they did say the "companions save the day", but that "the quality of the writing does vary wildly". So maybe Weekes came through after all. They also mentioned the game isn't actually like the initial trailer suggested. I fear that, in regards of Rook, they took too far the desire of a version of purple Hawke to be back. I fear you may be correct. It seems they're at least a decade and change too late for more purple Hawke. They have to have someone explain to them that purple Hawke worked because the game came out when the MCU was hitting its prime around the 2010s. When the quips and sarcasm hadn't worn out their welcome in popular media. Just the opposite in fact. It also worked because it was genuinely entertaining and it didn't take away much from the overall tragic tone of DAII.

"No matter which dialogue option you pick, a lot of it inevitably ends in some sort of joke, and sometimes even mildly embarrassing pop culture references and idioms. (I never want to hear a character say a griffon is “feeling his oats”, please. Please.) Veilguard isn’t the Guardians of the Galaxy-esque jokefest fans feared it might be after its first trailer, but Rook is written less like a person with opinions and more like someone who makes witty observations." Rook sounds worse than Ryder. That sounds abominable. Can’t say I’m particular shocked that dialogue breadth seems to have shrunk even further, BioWare has seemed to hate the idea of player’s crafting a character(beyond cosmetic dress up) for a while. might have to end up reducing the maximum price I’ll be willing to pay for closure.

20years ago I couldn't deal with Morriwind. I got lost for real and gave up. But since Morrowind, an extreme case I had zero issues. And I get lost IRL in my own small town, that's how bad I am at direction. So what's going on? What's the IQ of average gamer that they can't follow a corridor and a big quest marker? Funny, my first real RPG was Oblivion after my childhood days of JRPGs. I had no idea what was going on, what I was supposed to do. I was so confused. I gave up in frustration after 4h because I apparently made the grave mistake of picking healer as a class. Couldn't fight anything bigger than a rat. Got over encumbered and couldn't move. I was like WTF is that?! Ran into an oblivion gate eventually and just died in five seconds, lol. Hated open world for a while after that... But you know what? I played more non J RPGs that didn't hold my hand every step of the way and eventually got the hang of it. I survived BG3 on zero D&D experience. People can LEARN. I mean, I still suck at tactical gameplay. I get lost in every cave in every game. I'm the most inefficient player out there. I forget most lore notes a minute after I read them. But I appreciate the effort put into world building. I do read every note I find.l even if the info doesn't stick because there's something wrong with my memory. I pity these kids who are not getting challenged anymore. This is NOT helping them. That's perpetuating a sad situation. You're not empowering the player, you're wrapping them in an infant security blanket. When it gets torn off in the real world, these kids won't be prepared. And I'm saying this as a spoiled only child millennial who still struggles with the real world at age 40.

Reading a journal requires reading and that seems to be going out of style rather quickly. This is basically the game version of a tiktok short on repeat. Maybe this is that mythical modern audience. Seriously, I've read shocking studies and feedback by teachers on how the situation is in school. Kids can't read, they can't understand complex sentences anymore because they don't read books, only social media snippets. I guess BioWare decided NOT to challenge kids and give them an incentive to start and enjoy reading and rather just give them Tiktok The "RPG" so they remain unchallenged and ignorant in their safe space... Prove me wrong, DAV! I'm convinced much of this is the result of the "everyone gets a trophy" mentality that started in the U.S. about 20 years ago (not sure if that's a thing in other countries). Something I never subscribed to with my own...you don't get to feel special just for showing up. Losing is supposed to feel bad folks...you should look across the field at the victors in envy...it's what motivates individuals to work harder. Instead we've given them the excuse to be mediocre. Frankly I wouldn't point any of this out but those same people have the audacity to complain when they lose out on a promotion or didn't get the pay raise they felt they "deserved." Eventually most people figure out personal responsibility...so given enough time they'll become the old timers complaining about the younger generation. Unfortunately, it seems like we'll have to endure catering to this crowd in DAV.

People give 1’s because they’re homophobic, or 10’s because they have one romance option they like. User reviews tell us nothing, the good ones are so rare that it’s almost not worth reading them. That's why you look at the reviews based on the overall average given by users. If the average is 6...ignore everything except 5-7 to get closer to the truth. No amount of review bombing or upvoting can significantly impact the final overall score because it happens at both ends. I would trust that approach more than any of the so-called "journalists" because they are bought with access or straight up paid to do an entire marketing campaign. I'd say find a reviewer who's tastes mirror your own as closely as possible, and stick with that. It doesn't really matter what reviewers that don't like what you like think

Trespasser didn't really gave that impression, especially if Iron Bull is still part of it, and the little bit in Veilguard don't exactly makes me thing they're going to be good. But we'll see soon enough, I guess. Ever since DA2 the Qun has been shown to be a refuge for the downtrodden and oppressed. DAI it's was strongly suggested that they are much more open and progressive than we were originally led to believe. Certainly more so than Tevinter. I am willing to bet that the Qunari will be painted as the 'good guys" in the fight between them and the Imperium, and possibly against Solas himself.

I get your point, but Inquisition/Trespasser shown also that a qunari considers non-qunari things even after spending years together and having a relationship with them. It doesn't really sound like 'good guys' to me, even if they added some progressive point.

I was expecting it, but it is wild how much disparaging opinions are about the game. Dantics, which was more skeptical before, things it's a great game, while MrMattyPlays, which was a lot positive after the preview, is really negative on it.

Didn't expect this from them. Ohh dear. only 5 minutes in but i'd be in stitches (if i wasn't desperately hoping for a dragon age i'd want to play) "Too scared to be confronting or dark for fear of making the audience uncomfortable" "Every interaction with companions feels like HR is in the room" "Rook sounds like he is addressing an under 11 soccer team or teaching toddlers to share toys"

Purple Hawke worked because they were an established character from the get go, their jokes were actually funny even when they shouldn't be (boneless women walking around), Kirkwall was fucked up and in the end everything Hawke seemed to be trying to do was to stay sane in all that bullshit. It was also a different time, 2011-12.
Keeper Marethari says it well: "There is a light in your heart human. Don't let it go out, you will need it."
You can't make jokes just for the sake of it and wait for applause, it would never work.

"Every interaction between companions feels like HR was in the room."
You could see this in the promo materials a mile away. I have no doubt the game does other things well - the environments are great and the combat looks fun. But fans of Origins didn't want this kind of writing. Safe, unnuanced and generic.

Kek What the frack Is this? Rook becoming transgender? Sooo picking trans in the CC is not enough to establish that. We have to actively reject it? I honestly can't even tell which one is the not trans option... Holy envelope pushing, Batman.

MrMatty seems to have done a 180 from preview to full game :/ He sounded sad when reviewing that game and I get it. After such a long wait, I'm not too happy either. And I have to agree, the romance talk was so cringe. I mean romances have always had this bit of a cringe flavour but that was so much more worse.
