Pardon my ignorance, but is there a lore explanation as to why warriors seem to have magical abilities in this game? Luckily it's cool, so it's not a deal breaker, but why? You don't need to know why, and there's not enough time to explain.

That's why I think Inquisition was a teaser to a lot of the BS we are seeing now, including the lack of evil RP options, more sanitized story and retcons to push an agenda. People tried to ignore it because it had some remnants of good writing and open world back then was trendy no matter how shitty. Honestly if Inquisition just came one year after its release it would have been trashed since TW3 would have overshadowed it completely. Bioware got lucky there. Veilguard meanwhile comes out a year after BG3 which was a masterpiece so Bioware is getting trashed more even than usually. As someone who never played BG3 due to the lore changes, I respectfully disagree. I don't think BG3 coming out sank Veilguard. I think Veilguard would've failed if BG3 didn't exist. It didn't sink it but it definitely added to the shitstorm imho, I have seen tons of people comparing this game with BG3 and saying how much better the latter is & how its the real successor of Origins.

I guess I'm far enough into this game to make an actual opinion on these companions other than the first impressions sprinkled with the snippets of videos we've seen of them before the game. Neve - She's ok. She's got some funny dialogues with Bellara and Lucanis. But I really can't say I care much for her personal quests so far. Still don't like the VA. Directing problem or VA problem, don't care, it takes me out of her convos/quest sometimes. Bellara - I was initially put off by yet another quirky college girl persona, and I'm still am but it is far less frequent after our first interactions. She can only truly shine when doing her work with ancient elven crap or when we have a one to one in the Lighthouse. Harding - She's the biggest disappointment for me. I was not expecting to get the feel that Lace was a teenager in this game, yet I did and still do when we are outside her personal quests. A friend of mine said she liked it because it reminds her of a romantic comedy. To each their own I guess. Her quests are the only place where I felt something different coming from her. The lore was good, even the VA gave me something different there and it worked for me. Emmrich - I'm biased because even though it's not what most expect of a Necromancer type character, I do like him quite a lot. Probably because Down Among the Dead Men was one of my favorite Tevinter Nights tales and I really dig the lore of the Mortalitasi. I like polite people, and he's just right up my alley on all acounts. His romance hit the right notes for what I expected, his dialogue and the lore did add up with what I expected and I was satisfied with it. Manfred is ok, didn't really like them trying, and failing, to use him as a comic relief since that's not the vibe I got from the books at all. He was more of a butler, less of a pet. Davrin - He is suprisingly a close second for me. Before the game released I thought I was going to find him boring, but I actually enjoy our conversations. Sure they usually revolve around Assan and griffons, but it's good to talk with someone that doesn't take me out of the game by being childish or due to the VA. His quests are my favorites so far, Assan is adorable and I'm pretty happy with his character. Might even play a second time to see how his romance plays out. Lucanis - I'm sorry to anyone who likes him but I find it hard to take him and the Crows in this game seriously. If he's supposed to come off as one of the best killers in the organization, I can't see that at all. Maybe I just can't take Spite seriously. It's more of an annoyance than a demon. He reminds me of the Pokémon Morpeko that stops being hangry when it eats something. That's Lucanis with his coffee. Taash - I was expecting to hate, and I'm just disappointed. Her dialogue makes me cringe and she's a walking contradiction on many lore aspects of this series. The Qun is not something one simply quotes the best parts and ignore the bad. Her interactions with her mom are annoying because she's supposed to be 20 years old, but it feels like I'm looking at a 15 year old coming out to her guardian. The non-binary stuff was very immersion breaking since it was Neve who brought up the subject and Bioware didn't even had the decency to have the word be said in Tevene. The conversation per se was not as bad as I thought but whatever Weekes was trying to do to raise awareness, didn't work. Taash is also rather abrasive, and not in a charming way like Vivienne and Morrigan, and I don't much care for that. Anyway, that's what I think so far.

According to the director, bioware didnt want to have a trespasser like DLC to give a true ending to their story. And according to what i've seen of the endings (dont worry i wont spoil anything) it does seem like a contained story with a proper ending. Andromeda on the other hand, had a DLC planned even before launch. There is still one Ark missing in the base game. The Quarian Ark was supposed to be the DLC and it actually felt like an interesting story since you get that criptic message at the end of game. A shame EA put the game on ice. I actually believe that if they were given time to relase DLCs and improve the whole experience, the end result would have been much better than what we got. Andromeda is a subpar game, but considering it was put together in 18months, i wonder what it could have been given the proper time to cook. And i do remember having a lot of fun with the combat in that game, plus it looked gorgeous. And Drack. I liked Drack quite a lot. Older version of Wrex. Peebee and Liam tho, wish i could just send them on a treasure hunt to the escape pod and press the red button. They had 8 years. They wasted 6 and half of them trying to make No Man's Sky, something I would have never played to begin with. You are absolutely right. They wasted years on the ludicrous idea of making No Man's Mass Effect. What i mean by more time is after the launch, like at least let them release the DLC that SHOULD have been part of the base game but they probably didnt have time to add.

Exodus better be good. It looks awesome but I really hope I won't be disappointed It all looked amazing but there is no visible movement there. Hopefully, they did not simply run out of moneys and stopped working. Yeah unless i missed something we didn't even see any gameplay yet IMO, they might consider going at least somewhat into Warframe-esque direction. Anything less might be insufficient. It is a big pants to fill but maybe doable with a competent team. Warframe spoiled a lot of sci-fi fans with its responsiveness, immersion, lore, and parkour systems to the point of the whole sci-fi space shooter genre gradually disappearing except the Star Wars branch of course, and that group is slowly but steadily degrading into some ridiculous nonsense. So, a common criticism I'm seeing is that the game is lacking edge and is too fluffy and cuddly, and since the writing team for this game was largely the same as in DA:I, with some folks working on DA:O way back when, I wonder to what extent this might be down to Weekes' leadership. Because Weekes is the guy who wrote this, admittedly many years ago, but I see little reason to think his storytelling philosophy has changed. Gaider, by contrast, is the guy who liked to brag of his love of the fandom's tears. Weekes managed to lecture everyone with the non binary thing but you got pearls like : Big ending spoiler for Solas, and Taash quests. Taash who whines "who likes being a woman?" and whines about dresses...like wut?
Her mother get killed.
Solas get redeemed because Mythal appears and says it's all her fault, she made him like this. And Lavellan who I guess has zero self esteem left beg Solas to accept forgiveness before locking herself up with him for eternity sharing his punishment. Basically all women are punished and serves other character plot (male / non binary) So Yikes.
So much self righteousness, so little awareness.
Not a fan.

If you havent, you should subscribe to their newsletter. Almost every week i receive an email with either lore tidbits or small videos of the enemies and type of npcs we are going to see in the game. Just this week they released 3 new videos with 3 new enemy types. I think by now, more than a year away from release they already showed more enemy variety than Veilguard lol. There's even a book set in this universe that released in September, Exodus: The Archimedes Engine. Havent read it yet but reviews seem to be pretty good. All in all, they seem pretty active in releasing new stuff regularly to keep interest in the game. And they dont even have a release date yet. I watched some summary recently on some tube channel, which apparently shows up what you mentioned, and look at their website from time to time. There is a huge difference between bits and pieces however well made and the whole apparently complex game.I also wasted 7 or 10 minutes watching their Q&A that told ... exactly nothing under various usual excuses, aka not to spoil, marketing director looking over the shoulder, etc. It is also positioned as triple A, and nobody seems to really know whether they has the monies to pull that off. IDK of course, the only way to know is to wait. Hopefully it don't turn into another Star Citizen.

Almost 90,000 CC players on Steam, that’s impressive….for an AA game (KCD beat it).
But looks like the so called success of Veilguard may be premature if this chart is to be believed:
Now, Andromeda cost $80 million, was made by a team of 200 in four years. Andromeda sold five million copies and it was praised by EA at launch but then all DLC was cancelled and Andromeda was forgotten.
We don’t know much about the costs of Veilguard but it has a team of 350 and it’s been in development for eight years. I think it’s fair to say that development costs would balloon to over 160 million due to a rough development time, constant personnel changes, COVID, inflation and so on.
Now according to this chart; if we are very generous and triple the highest figure, the revenue would only be $100 million, barely half to break even and those sales numbers are going to continue to tank like the Gamalytics figures show.
Couple that with rumors that BioWare will not be making DLC tells me that this game is underwhelming from a sales perspective and it will be forgotten like Andromeda. That begs the question: what will happen with BioWare in a year?

Why do I have to first travel to a place and only then am I able to fast travel to a beacon closest to my quest? This wasn't a thing in Inquisition, where you could just click open a map and choose the camp you'd travel to. Or do I remember this wrong? Honestly this is such a waste of time...
Furthermore, they've made some companion quests ridiculous. Some quests are just you getting a quest to go somewhere in the map and then having one conversation. There were several instances in Inquisition where you'd talk to someone in Skyhold, they'd ask if you were ready to go do thing X Y or Z, and then it just automatically teleports you outside of Skyhold to where you're supposed to go have that ONE conversation. Why couldn't they just do something similar? Now I have to first pick the goddamn place I need to travel, wait for the loading screen, then pick the beacon closest to the quest, wait for the loading screen, and then probably go through some fuckery trying to navigate the map and of course there might be some enemies nearby that I don't want to deal with.
And oh MAN do I hate navigating these maps. How do you make navigating and exploring WORSE than in Inquisition?!
EDIT: I just came back from having one conversation with Davrin in Arlathan. Now I come back to the Lighthouse, and he wants to have a NEW conversation somewhere else. I'm so fucking tired guys.

I've heard it's a good writer heading it up and Gamble has already gone on record saying that it won't be like Veilguard in its appearance. These are good developments, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I'm still scared to death about it. They also said the original Veilguard trailer wasn't indicative. Why would we believe anything they say at this point? Mass Effect gets them the CoD/Spunk Gargle Wee Wee*** audience. So it doesn't surprise me that they'd put more effort into that IP than Veilguard. Honestly, between Andromeda, Anthem, and the marketing for Mass Effect - it kind of feels like Dragon Age is the redheaded stepchild Bioware only reluctantly made a game for while they focus on their preferred IP ***

Lucanis - I'm sorry to anyone who likes him but I find it hard to take him and the Crows in this game seriously. If he's supposed to come off as one of the best killers in the organization, I can't see that at all. Maybe I just can't take I think the Lucanis story arc would have worked better if he wasn't a Crow. The whole thing of making the Thedas Mafia into the "good guys" in Treviso just doesn't work with me. I actually found Lucanis in Tevinter Nights more interesting because there was hinted to be something different about him and he wasn't just your average contract killer. For me the demon made him less interesting from the outset. Then for the demon to be so tame really didn't make much sense. Why couldn't they have had some sort of arc where the demon reverts to a spirit if you make the right choices? At least that would explain why bonding them more closely is beneficial to Lucanis. If he was mentally such a mess I'm surprised Spite hadn't taken him over completely, not just when he's sleeping. Also, the poor guy never wanted to be First Talon but it is forced on him anyway. Great! The whole massed gathering of the Crows in a great hall seemed a bit daft to me too. Just the leaders gathering on a remote island as in Eight Little Talons made more sense. Taash - I was expecting to hate, and I'm just disappointed. Her dialogue makes me cringe and she's a walking contradiction on many lore aspects of this series. The Qun is not something one simply quotes the best parts and ignore the bad. Taash was a supreme disappointment. I've watched many of her scenes and feel there they could have done so much better with their first female Qunari companion. To my mind she is just Iron Bull 2.0 in the way she was written, without the bondage (but I think Weakes really wanted to go there with all the references to ropes and some of the "romance" dialogue) but instead a vehicle for introducing real world gender ideology tropes. Every time it was said she behaved like a man, I was asking "how?" Where was the option to say: "You're a strong, beautiful woman. Ignore all that Qun roles crap. Look around you at the rest of Thedas. You can be anything you want to be as a WOMAN." But no, the conclusion is that she is non binary, so now she has to be called "they". There is a possessed man in the bible who says "My name is Legion, for we are many." It was indicative of the fact there was more than one occupant of his body. So, in a world where people can be actually possessed, no one would be wary of someone asking to be called "they" and referring to themselves in the plural? That is what drives me up the wall when modern day idioms are introduced into a fantasy world where they don't belong. Nothing wrong with people living as the opposite sex and asking to be referred to as such because historically that has always occurred but not in the plural. Also, previous high dragons were always female. "Hey, Taash just look at that big dragon. She is strong, she is scary, she fights, she doesn't wear a dress. So, didn't you say you are a dragon?"

Davrin is hot though. Probably my favorite companion and even his writing is not the best. It does its job though, and the VA sells it. Not sure what it is with this game repeating things over and over. I had a conversation of like one minute with Emrich and he said like 4 times Manfred is a spirit of curiosity. It's like everyone is saying the same thing over and over, and I don't know if the writers are turning senile or they think we are.

More than the bad writing it was the insane convoluted quest chains that made me almost stop playing. Andromeda was: You're on planet X, you are told somebody wants to talk to you. You have to leave the planet, fly into orbit and take the call from your ship like WFT, WHY?! Then you are told to meet on the planet you were previously on..... At the time I thought, OK, this is the worst quest design I have ever seen but this game was made by the C team and this was their first game. There is NO excuse that the A team that worked on previous games is giving us shit like that again. I started doing some side quests yesterday and I was so confused about the quest flows. It's the same fucking crap like MEA all over again. Wasting my time with stuff like that really pisses me off.

I'm really taken aback with the poor level of writing about Taash and the gender identity discussion. I accidentally chose an option that apparently made my character trans and they used the word trans there! This is not me complaining that trans people are included, this is me complaining that the way these instances are written are so bad it hurts my heart. I thought the way Krem was handled in Inquisition was poignant and eloquent. This game is... I don't even know if you can say this about a fantasy game, but the way they used the word 'trans' in Veilguard felt jarringly anachronistic, like it doesn't work with the setting.

They also said the original Veilguard trailer wasn't indicative. Why would we believe anything they say at this point? Mass Effect gets them the CoD/Spunk Gargle Wee Wee*** audience. So it doesn't surprise me that they'd put more effort into that IP than Veilguard. Honestly, between Andromeda, Anthem, and the marketing for Mass Effect - it kind of feels like Dragon Age is the redheaded stepchild Bioware only reluctantly made a game for while they focus on their preferred IP *** I've never met a COD DudeBro who bought Mass Effect. The 1 time COD made a sci fi game the community revolted and boycotted it. It was the 1 COD that epicly failed sales. Ironically, that was the 1 COD I've liked in 15 years lol. I don't think Mass Effect draws as big of a shooter audience as people think. Sure it gets some, but after Andromeda I suspect those guys aren't interested anymore.

Yeh, well that figures. Incidentally, Maevaris clearly got her name because DG was originally basing her on Mae West, except as a transwoman. Mae in his comic series was great and really channeled Mae West. Yet, she was also unapologetic about slavery, even more so than Dorian in DAI. "Everyone has slaves in Tevinter, darling." It instantly made her about something more than the fact she was trans and there was something that people like Isabella could kick back against. The comment by Mae was in response to a sarcastic comment by Isabella about the Magister pointing out her slaves. That's why Mae worked. You discover more about her later but it was never the main aspect of her personality or even her story. In other words, David Gaider knew how to do it well.
From what I've seen of Mae in Veilguard she doesn't even look like comic Mae. I know she is 12 years older and had a bit of a fall from grace but the old Mae would still have kept that air of swagger and style, as did the real Mae West who had her setbacks and challenges in life. It would have been interesting to actually see those political machinations in the Magisterium and how Mae was undermined along with the Lucerni. Instead there was just a few lines of dialogue (or is there more I haven't seen?).
That's what is so disappointing about the game when it comes to returning characters or even, as in the case of Mae, characters we have never seen in game but know from other media and by reputation. There was so much potential when it came to the politics of Tevinter and it was just reduced to Venatori corrupted everyone but a handful of good guys. Great!

Couple that with rumors that BioWare will not be making DLC tells me that this game is underwhelming from a sales perspective and it will be forgotten like Andromeda. That begs the question: what will happen with BioWare in a year? The budget number I've heard was 100M but that was only for the latest iteration, so it doesn't include the money spent on the first 2 attempts nor the cost of marketing. I think it would be safe to put a 200M price tag on DAV. Of course EA isn't interested in break even propositions so figure you need to double the development costs to keep them happy. The game needs to sell 5-6M at full price. One of two things is going to happen. Bioware is shuttered...or EA removes the people at the top for failing so miserably. As for the DLC it's not rumor the Dev's themselves stated they had no planned DLC. They hinted it could change but I imagine that is subject to the games success and demand by player base.

I've also been watching Emmrich's personal quest. Has anyone finished this yet? Cause I think it is another case of something totally at variance with the lore being shoehorned in. I am speaking, of course, of Emmrich becoming a lich. So the Mourn Watch have altered from a group of dedicated guardians of the Grand Necropolis and experts in the funeral rites to create the mummified bodies that live there to a group where the ultimate aim is to become an immortal undead. Why were we never told this before? I thought it a stretch that they established their alternative burial rites under the noses of the Chantry but this? Are they trying to tell us that no one, absolutely no one ever suspected them? That the Templars didn't sense something weird going on even if they continued to walk around with the glamour hiding their true appearance? Yet when Emmrich presents himself to the team, they are all really chilled about it. It's not a problem. Really! Couldn't they have just one person go "I'm out of here" or at least "Just stay way from me, okay".
Presumably this is what they meant when people asked can you sleep with a skeleton (meaning Manfred) and they said not quite, wait and see. So, yes, you can continue on the romance with this weird skeleton undead guy who sleeps in a coffin. Whatever floats your boat I suppose.
However, the lore implications are just enormous and, once again, another nail in the coffin of the Maker. Clearly, they threw the whole "we're never going to reveal whether he exists on not" into the trash along with the rest of the lore. Non evil liches and tame demons do not belong in Thedas. This is not morally grey, it is stupid.
This is not a soft reboot. This is a whole new setting using old names and places. No wonder they wanted to dump the Keep.

It's as if they just did a rewrite of the whole lore at this point. Not even characters in Dungeons and Dragons would have been chill with what you just described and they at least are pretty chill with a lot of stuff. About Maevaris: that is really sad to read. A lot of people, me among them, wanted her to play a role in the game. I guess this is a case of careful what you wish for.

It's worth noting that Gamalytic only use Steam figures ignoring other outlets. On PC a large amount of the fandom are going to be using the EA App as that's what they are used to (however terrible it may be). And DA has always had a larger console user base than PC. This isn't like BG3 where the console ports came after the PC release. Suffice to say I think those numbers mean very little at this stage.
