It isn't just the possessed companion. There is another companion where they should be freaking out at their transformation but they just seem to shrug and accept it. Not only that but most of the benign sort of possession cases in past games started out that way because it was a spirit to begin with, even if Anders maintained he had an adverse effect on Justice that turned him into Vengeance. Nevertheless, it was that way round because he wasn't trying to dominate Anders as a demon ought to be trying to do. There was a similar thing in the novel Masked Empire though. Imshael had taken up possession of Mhris with her agreement but then happily relinquished it later on when it was clear that otherwise the others would kill her. It is a far cry from the demons in DAO and DA2. I also think it a bit silly that his wings actually seem to give him the ability to fly short distances or at least glide. Why does he even have them? Demons are not fallen angels like in our cosmology. About that Lucanis can absolutely Fly. He does so on his two scuffles with Ghilan'nain. First during the Siege of Weisshaupt which was weird as fuck. Then during the final battle of the game.

It's Dragon Age, that got gutted of all its depth and charm. It's cliche after cliche.
Even some of the better stuff like warden content/Davrin suffers from the Scooby Doo villain syndrome. When you have villains you can't even take seriously because they act so freaking goofy.
There aren't going to be any templar/mage debate with this one. Or Qunari. Or crazy theories. Every thing is spilled out. Villains are like World of Warcraft : don't overthink it they're all corrupted to some degree. There's almost zero new world building minus the factions that are several shade of nice.
Companions are forgettable and all have some kind of weird stuff going on : demon, griffin, titan power... I heard Bellara quest was nice, and I was surprised .. how stupid and with scooby doo villain syndrome it's also going. Unless there's some miracle in the last act, it's been for the most part mediocre.

The new factions in this suck hard and have nothing going for them. The old ones are stripped of most of what made them good. The grey wardens somewhat spared but they aren't doing anything interesting either, at least as far as I've seen

Honestly I disagree. It was the first Bioware game that was geniunely awful and 100% sanitized, basically a precursor to Veilguard but since it’s been a few years people try to downplay its flaws. The characters felt like bratty modern teenagers, the villians were a joke, you had zero RP options, the setting lost any dark parts it had etc. The worst part is that instead of learning they just continued with that tone for Veilguard The difference is that you can remove the words “Mass Effect” and it’s still an okay game. A 6 or 6.5. From a writing standpoint alone, Veilguard starts at a 5. And only goes lower the more you delve into it. As far as the characters go, Drack and Vetra carry the team. The shipmates are good too. Cora’s good when she’s outside of her Asari obsession. The gameplay is arguably the best in the franchise. And the writing is better than Veilguard by a large margin. Ryder can actually yell at his companions and be ruthless at certain points. Rook can encourage multiculturalism. Hating Andromeda doesn’t take away the fact that it’s still an okay game. Agree with everything but the gameplay. I thought it completely sucked imo. But yes, if you take "Mass Effect" out of the title, it would be judged less harshly.

Nah, they already lost me with MEA. Didn't feel like the target audience with that game already. DAV just dialed the dissonance up to 11. As much as it’s easy to dunk on that game, and deservedly so. That title felt like a genuine effort from people who cared about the series and took a chance. Especially considering it was people with limited experience making it. Veilguard is a skinwalker with callous disregard and hatred for its loyal fans. I think it's more like a team that realized the IP had been painted into a corner, and trying to make a window to climb out of. And not really succeeding. They were given an impossible task. Whoever makes DA5 (if there is one) will be in a similar situation.

Even without Tevinter Nights, Trespasser set the stage for a banger of a game set on northern Thedas. A war everyone can see between Tevinter and the Qun, because even if they Ben-Hassrath said they didn't vouch for the Viddasala, they absolutely wanted to fuck up the south in one single move. Tevinter cities are being looted, citizens forced to become viddathari, mages lobotomized and we could have had Minrathous as a cornered rat. Meanwhile Varric/Harding/Charter, basically the Inquisition, are fighting a shadow war against Solas and his agents. Running against time to stop Solas and the Agents of the Dreadwolf who are disrupting things so the war will keep going and Varric's group cannot interfere with Solas' ritual. Maybe Solas didn't yet acquired his dagger in this scenario? Anyway, could have even thrown a slave uprising in Minrathous and we would be conflicted because the commotion would also help to mask Solas' and his agents' movements. Anyway, I say all of this because I cannot stop thinking about how there are no Agents of the Dread Wolf in Veilguard. How the war between Tevinter and the Qunari basically doesn't exist anymore and all of that.

Whoever makes DA5 (if there is one) will be in a similar situation. That’s a very accurate way to describe it. And it honestly might be in their interest to come out and disown Veilguard and treat it like a mistake. If they approach a DA5 with humility and in respect to the universe, they can bounce back. Well, as long as Mass Effect isn’t another disappointment. Either way they’re in an unenviable position.

I feel like there is a game missing in between Inquisition and Veilguard. Maybe most of the plot points were covered in comics and TN that came after inquisition but the beginning of the games is such a mess. Suddenly, everyone knows what the Evanuris were and that they roam free with no questions asked.
And I don't think it's the writers fault, TN was pretty good, although for example it was apparent Weekes didn't like the Qun even back then.

I talked about it before, but I thought it's just me and maybe I missed something. But I think it's a mix of two things - over reliance on supplemental material like books and comics and the complete salad they made out of the lore.

And he makes his characters show his bias through in-game dialogue too. Weekes don't like the Dalish and the Qun. Solas didn't like them either, he even voices his distaste of the Qun in Trespasser. lol
Taash only quotes the best parts of the Qun, when it's convenient.
I really don't care much for Weekes' writing tbh, it's why I dislike The Masked Empire. Solas is a good character, I get it, but I would have liked him more as the main villain.

Also about Lucanis Has it occurred to anyone else that Rook had the perfect opportunity to kill Spite when Spite takes them to the Fade? Instead, we help him get even closer to Lucanis.
And I thought Hawke was stupid.

I'm struggling... My plan was to get the secret ending, but I don't know if I can keep playing as I'm bored out of my mind... I don't really find anything enjoyable except the art. The combat was fun, but its becoming redundant and tedious. It's the same mobs over and over again. The writing is boring at best and full of contradictions in the game itself. The companions are like Kool-Aid made with Splenda instead of sugar. I can't do this...

I just recruited Taash... Annoyed the crap out of me within five minutes. Absolute insufferable teenage drama, like a fucking parody. I know I'm saying this a lot but... might be the worst cringe recruitment mission and possibly worst written character EVER. I've lost all respect for Weekes and I held them in high regards until now.
Also, I didn't think I could be more annoyed with a character than Liam in MEA. But Taash managed this within less than an hour. Bravo!
Modern language is a medieval fantasy setting is lowest tier fanfiction cringe. 90% of fanfiction is badly written trash because of that. Good writing is HARD. Writing in character is hard. And most people are not good enough to pull it off. Neither are BioWare writers anymore, it seems. The 1% of fanfiction that is actually amazing blows DAV out of the water. So complete amateur writers with a gift can do much better than people who a are supposedly paid professionals who understand basic storytelling structure.
I cannot get over how goddamn mundane everyday modern society stuff the companions talk about. DURING AN ELVEN ARMAGEDDON!!! Like coffee and the Thedas version of soap operas. Or gardening. It absolutely boggles the mind how dull the banter is so far for the most part. Makes you feel like the Lighthouse is completely detached from the events around it. Companion scenes are like playing one of these cozy games rather than an RPG about the end of the world. It is so very jarring.
I do not understand what was going on in the devs heads...

Yep, i’m thoroughly irritated by the hawke and Isabela game treatment. Be honest though, is the Isabella in game really the one you know and love? I know she sounds the same but is that really her? Would you really want her claiming to know Hawke, much less have been in a relationship with them? That's why it probably was a good thing they dropped the Keep. Not only did we realise that they didn't care anything about honouring our choices or the game lore in general but if you did play the game you didn't have to endure them messing up our memories like they did with Hawke in DAI. I thought that was bad but DAV is so much worse. Personally I loved Hawke in DAI, but I agree with what you said about the keep. I don't want these writers anywhere near my choices. They destroyed Thedas enough with their modern audience trash

gervaise21Taash and Qun spoilers from Act I I'm not trying to create excuses for their retcons but I think what Taash said about the Qun, that you "can leave it", makes sense in the context of her story. Let's say she's 20 (acting like a tween). Her bio mom is also a Tamassaran so could actually raise her own kid when usually they can't. They're also in Rivain. And about 15 years before, her mother just picks her up and walks out of whatever sort of living arrangements the Qunari had there. But we're talking about moderately established Ravaini outpost in a country that mostly tolerates their presence peacefully. Where the rule of thumb for this branch is gentle guidance into the fold. They can't be seen by the general populace as enforcing the Qun like they would in Seharon. There can't re rumors of re-education camps and Qamek. Likely, if someone they did want to keep did something bad enough, maybe they sent them back to Seharon as the worst case scenario.
So in a loosely enforced Qun compound 15-20 years ago in Ravaini, Tama could just walk away from the Qun. And Taash would not have experienced it any differently-- her own mother still seems to carry strong pride for the way of the Qun and has hidden her away from the dark truths of the religion. White washed the Qamek stories as happening to only those causing actual harm (the bad deserving(. And Taash would then look at what the Antaam is doing and find it completely alien to this idealized version she's been raised on and exposed to. Similar to Tallis' version of the qun being all butterflies as well considering she was gently converted of her own free will-- the gaffe of trying to sell it to a mage Hawke not withstanding.
