got to say I’m glad weekes wasn’t in a more senior role in past BioWare games if this horrible fluff is his vision. Weekes wrote Mordin! How do you get from writing one of the best character arcs in gaming to THIS drivel??? I do not understand. I could shoot Mordin in the back, I could drive Tali to suicide. How did we get here??? I do not understand.
Some people are more suited to being directed as opposed to taking charge, that's not a bad thing, not everyone can lead & I think that might be someone like Weekes, just needs tighter direction to keep focused.
My own thoughts on the last few pages I just read...today is the day that hope died for me, if I do get this game, it'll be on sale
lastly, just listening to a Fextralife vid, he was denied a code for being critical too...

It's flaws are undeniable, but ME3 has an honorary place in my OG Bioware list.

I've seen a couple of spoiler free reviews. The one from Ghil Dirthalen is what I choose to trust the most, as she seems to be in the same category of players as I am (lore nerd who wants to know how overall story will be handled).
At the same time, i'm really not feeling the approach with disclaimers during conversations. Hopefully there is an option to hide/minimize them, alongside puzzle tips from companions. With first feature, it's simply peculiar (in a bad way) UX choice. Not only do you get a message above dialogue wheel as you hover on the response option, but you also get another notification elaborating on consequences right after. On top of this, it both breaks immersion and spoils the future plot.
As for the leaked Taash bit - simply diabolical. From the way initial choices worded in a very neutral way, to a wtf of a disclaimer afterwards. It pains me to see modern day terminology in a fantasy game/books. It's akin to having a good meal and tasting a bit a spice you hate, making you want to spit the whole thing. Editors must fix such things. Why on earth just not use setting friendly words? What the fuck "binary" does in Dragon Age?
I do hope it's more of an exception than a rule, as I know how good of a writer Weekes is and conversations with Solas so far were on the same quality as him in Trespasser.

Currently watching the Skillup review and to say that I'm disappointed with what I'm seeing and hearing is to say the very least of it. No ability to persuade, chastise, estrange or simply engage in a grown up and meaningful way with other characters is an absolute killer for me. Moreover, what is with the tone of this game?

Yeah it's rough. I'm playing it, but I do believe I will cringe a lot and perhaps manage to get angry. I'm still holding hope the lore didn't take too much of a beating, and we might see the Golden City and have a WOAW moment. After having to coddle and soothe a bunch of children companions for hours, I need a reward.

Harding and Emmrich talk to each other, a true story, wish I was joking: Harding - Emmrich let's go camping.
Emmrich - Sure, but I want to bring 9 books.
Harding - But that's stupid!
Emmrich - But I want to!
Rook - Kids, both sides are correct, why don't you play nice?
Harding/Emmrich - I never thought of it that way, thanks Rook!

I clicked on it. Is this the actual dialogue word for word?!? Dear lord... Now I know why Ali Hillis sounds so bored, I feel sorry for the poor woman. BioWare did her so dirty. Also, maybe I should have wished Claudia Black didn't get a call after all. Returning to Dragon Age after 10 years to THIS level of writing, ouch. But maybe they welcome the paycheck.

Not word for word, I won't be that dishonest here lol. But there are at least 3 instances of disagreements between the companions where you can side with someone or ask them to play nice, and they do, like kids or obedient robots. But yes, they did Harding really dirty in this game. Hell I'd say they did all the companions dirty, Taash most of all because in the end Taash is not really a character tbh, a shame because I was genuinely into them because Qunari.

I mostly listened to what he was saying and actively avoided reading the dialogue too closely because of spoilers. Got some Lucanis spoilers anyway but they mostly confirmed speculation so no big deal. What I did see was so bad though my brain was telling me to not watch more of it to keep my sanity, lol.

I knew there would be cringe but I'm quite taken aback at this point. Like don't they have a good editor ? Can they weave certain theme with the actual rich setting they have? Do i give a shit about companions bitching about packing for some picnic?

MrMatty seems to have done a 180 from preview to full game :/ Wow....I....wow....
To be fair....it is MrMatty....so...take that as you will. It's like another reviewer...Gene Park....who he reminds me of. I don't really trust either of them, or Shinobi for that matter (Rating Veilguard and Inquisition above 2? Okay...sure...)
I'll try to read more level-headed reviews, which can be hard, sadly

Old BSN dinosaur here (been lurking for a while ) Looks like a 7/10 game to me (6/10 if you're genuinely critical). A lot of the higher scores are from sites that tend to score well above the average for the games in question. It will be interesting to see what the PC rating on Metacritic is going to do, as it is already a bit lower at 80. One of the reviews there, by the way ( 4players.de) is an 8 rather than the 9 (a typo?) on Metacritic. Wonder what the old editorial board of 4players.de under Jörg Luibl would have thought of Veilguard... Anyway, the sales are what counts for EA HQ, so interesting to see where they will go, particularly in the weeks after the post-release reviews appear. At least this is one game less on the list for when my new PC arrives later this week

Since someone mentioned him before, Mortismal considers it his GOTY. Morti does not deal with writing, art style, story quality, and most of RPG elements. He's evaluating predominantly combat, builds, general playability, and whether there is enough content for the buck. I also suspect, he is skipping all irrelevant dialogue. Based on the comments, I also presume he was very happy to be able to actually 100% the game within the limited time frame he had without major crashes or hiccups, which is an outstanding achievement on its own for modern action game releases. So, to sum up, the game works, there are no major performance issues, and the combat works mostly as intended. All the rest is largely not his cup of tea, and he usually does not go into that for other reviews as well simply because he does not care and hold no loyalties whatsoever. He did voice a concern about being annoyed by various shades of good heroic and the lack of any meaningful even slightly renegade choices of any interactions.

Wonder if that's why they held off so long before introducing Taash? In case you aren’t being sarcastic, It’s exactly why. Trash isn’t a character. Taash is a self insert mouthpiece from a team of people wearing a BioWare skin suit. I don’t think they wanted to make a game in the first place. They wanted a platform.

Him calling DAV the best in the series is comedy gold. Never heard of this YTer, so thanks for explaining how that insane claim came about. I guess when you don't actually care about good writing and choices in a bloody RPG of all things then the game is good, lol. But naturally in the other thread SkillUp is the ridiculous one for saying the writing is toddler level and not much roleplaying sucks for an RPG, how dare he, and this GOTY claim is of course much less biased and more representative of the actual game. Fucking hell...

Wonder if that's why they held off so long before introducing Taash? Absolutely, I was thinking of that. They held back info and even pictures of Taash because they knew it would be a beacon for a certain group of people to attack relentlessly. Hell, they used Taash as scapegoat anyway lol. This is however their own fault, they decided to create a character like this instead of something that even slightly resembles a person, like Dorian in DAI.
If they were confident that this is what they wanted, why hide it? Because of cowardice, all to avoid bad PR for the game so it would sell well enough. I cant stress enough how this ruined Taash's character for me, because when I saw that "I am non-binary" dialogue today it completely took me out of the game and ruined whatever scrap of immersion there was left.
It's the same kind of cowardice that hid the info about the worldstate import having only 3 choices, that's all it is. If they were upfront from the start like with Krem in DAI I am sure most of the DA fandom would have simply accepted and moved on.

Looks like a 7/10 game to me (6/10 if you're genuinely critical). It is too early to tell more accurately, but yes, seems like its in-between 6 and 7 out of 10 more or less objectively with seriously bad writing and essential lack of a meaningful RPG aspect really lowering the score by a margin.

Yeah 10/10 games it isn't. No bloody way unless you're 14 and it's baby first RPG. You gotta go above 6 because it looks polished and meaty, and word is the actual 5 hours last act is very very good. But the writing, RP, repetitive combat means, if you're reallyfeeling generous 8,5 at most. Anything above and you're bullshitting and want a job at Bioware.

I used to like Skillup a few years ago. These days not so much. So it is ironic that his review was the one that put the last nail in the coffin for me. Kudos to him for not bucking to the pressure and actually give his honest opinion.
He said something that completely drained whatever vestige of hope i had left. I wont put this in spoiler cause its mostly a general rpg thing rather than any story related stuff. He says there is no player agency whatsoever, to the point where dialog choices are nothing more than different colored M&Ms, they look different but all taste the same. And apparently its so egregious that whatever you choose doesnt even equate to what you expect Rook to say. So in a way, you are not controlling Rook, you are simply given the impression that you are controlling him, but ultimately the story and dialog will go how the writers want it to go and not how you want or choose. Whats the point of playing an RPG like this then? Veilguard (i wont even call it dragon age anymore, veilguard is the only title this game should have) is NOT an RPG, its an illusion of an RPG. Bye bye Bioware. Im done.

I gave Andromeda a 6/10 and DAV looks so much worse at first glance. So anything better than 6 is extremely generous in my head. I guess I'd have to give it like a 4 at least for being playable or something...
Comparing the DAV review scores to Outlaws is wild to me. The storytelling and banter in Outlaws is poetry compared to DAV. I wish I drank, I feel like I need a drink to make sense of the world again.

Him calling DAV the best in the series is comedy gold. Never heard of this YTer, so thanks for explaining how that insane claim came about. I guess when you don't actually care about good writing and choices in a bloody RPG of all things then the game is good, lol. Morti has reviewed hundreds if not thousands of game in his channel and is a self-made sort of professional with his own ethics, which is discussed in some of his other videos. One cannot do this for a living if one does not shut down any kind of resonance or bias. While many people of this forum seem to be looking for things that resonate with their personal expectations and impressions, including me, Morti lets you see from a distance without that type of resonance in a more or less objective manner. For this to happen, anything related to individual preferences has to disappear, and Morti is mostly able to accomplish this.
