Whilst it may not surprise you that I have pre-ordered Veilguard, I totally agree with the general principle that pre-orders are not necessary. It's not like the old days, digital copies don't run out and the pre-order bonus is typically some digital fluff that will be outclassed after 15 minutes. Though "I'm not your supervisor", it's not my place to tell anyone what to do or not do with their own money. Do you pay in advance for other types of products you acquire?
Other than food, clothing, vehicles, stuff from Amazon, streaming services, anything from retail stores....I can't think of a single thing that people pay for before receiving.

Do you pay in advance for other types of products you acquire? Sure. Car insurance, holidays, rent, movies, books, music... [Ha. Lots of examples it seems] Though to be fair to Pounce, pre-orders are an advanced advance payment. (on some platforms - when I pre-order on Xbox, it waits until launch week to take my money)

Still stuck on and have never left “Shadow Dragons, Mourn Watch, and the impotent Veiljumpers”. Lucerni and Mortalitasi weren’t good enough? Veiljumpers sounds like a shitty EDM group. Furthermore why did they trivialize the fade in this game? It’s always been deathly serious, life changing, and prone to traumatize you. Now it’s this fun thing we do on the weekends. Oh look! A veil bubble!!! Weird faction names bothered me since they were announced. Shadow Dragons, Veil Jumpers? Couldn't writers think of anything better, these names sound really uncreative. Factions names for an MMO? It's mind boggling that Felicisima Armada was renamed Lords Of Fortune, Lucerni to Shadow Dragons, Mortalitasi to Mourn Watch. The original names sound unique and were already established 10 years ago, why go ahead and change them now. To be fair I don't recall any of these established names and what they are supposed to be about and that maybe has to do with letting them rot around for ten years instead of chucking them into a product I might care about. It's good enough for audience that enters new into this.

I wonder if that might have been a conflict with the helmet hiding feature. Benefit of the doubt and all that. You see, I thought of that. Which is why I mentioned BG2 (a game nearly 25 years old) where for a section of the game your appearance was transformed so you could infiltrate the drow city. So, would it have been so impossible to code that section of the game to override the toggle off helmets?
Not only that but then they get further in and a guard does challenge them because they don't recognise them. Hence my comment about my own efforts at door security. Rook doesn't know how to reply, which would be suspicious in itself, and then Neve blusters her way through. Now what that scenario failed to take into account was that just because she claimed to be a Magister didn't automatically mean she was a Venatori. What about the Lucerni? (I keep harping on this but supporting that faction in the Magisterium with Maevaris was the main reason Dorian left my Inquisitor and returned to Minrathous.) The correct response by the guard would be ask them to wait and send another guard off to get someone to verify their identity from among the bona fide Magisters attending the event or just someone with more knowledge of their membership.
Then I forgot to mention last time, but apparently the group seem to reveal their interest in discovering which Evanuris the Venatori support because they are opposed to them. ????? Yes, I can understand why the reviewer thought that ridiculous. Regardless, just asking their identity would seem odd if they are meant to be paid up Venatori supporters because they should know. So, really no thought at all went into that mission and it was all superficial fluff. Which was a pity because it could have been a really interesting and different challenge if done properly.

Lots of examples it seems] Though to be fair to Pounce, pre-orders are an advanced advance payment. (on some platforms - when I pre-order on Xbox, it waits until launch week to take my money) Half of that is services and perpetual agreements. You could argue games are services and perpetual agreements nowadays, too. Fair enough.
Edit: I fail to see how ordering online is regarded equal to pre-purchase. It's still a purchase. The goods are supposed to leave the sellers depot right away. That's not what I mean by paying in advance. I mean: Where do you pay without actually receiving the product in turn? This stuff used to be used in reservation orders when you needed to call dibs on limited stock.

Can companions even have visible helmets? Even on the Deluxe edition page the cosmetic armour sets that come with it have helmets for Rook's version but none of the companions has one. For some reason I just imagined the Star Wars version of that Venatori camp infiltration scene with Luke, Leia and Han wearing Stormtrooper armour but without helmets. Dozens of Stormtroopers pass them without finding that odd, and when they are finally challenged Leia simply tells them that she's some important guy's daughter or sent by Lord Vader himself or some such nonsense and all is fine.

Bit of a 'heads-up' while I'm here. It's Veilguard Launch Day, as you know. Inevitably that will mean a few changes for a forum board that moves from anticipatory discussion, to discussion about a released game. Several threads will be coming on stream today, many to support gameplay and story discussion. Others relating to 'pre-launch' topics will be anchored (people can finish up discussions, but new posts no longer bump the thread). As I'm the lucky OP of both the Hype and Skepticism threads, that means tweaks to both, because both hype and skepticism are positions about something as yet unknown: Skepticism "a sceptical attitude; doubt as to the truth of something."After launch however, the game exists, it can be seen, it can be played. So we need to move to joy and criticism rather than Hype and Skepticism. It remains very important to me that there remains an avenue for people to express their views about what they don't like (as well as what they do). It's important that a BioWare fan forum isn't an exclusive echo-chamber of thought either way. (noting that we do have rules about civility and inclusion). So welcome to the continuing: The Dragon Age The Veilguard Criticism Thread [Spoilers] (title and OP introduction tweak to follow later in the day)

So welcome to the continuing: The Dragon Age The Veilguard Criticism Thread [Spoilers] (title and OP introduction tweak to follow later in the day) This is legit amazing. I was refered here by someone on Reddit and I really enjoy my time here overall. Small comment - I'm not even sure it's a problem per se, but I do assume many people here won't be buying the game any time soon, so for us any discussion is still more about skepticism than actual criticism. It's also important in the context of spoilers, unless you mean the new criticism discussion to adhere to the same spoiler rules as here (I'm not honestly sure what the specific rules are, but it seems like most people here tag most details about the game, but I don't know if it's because they are just based or because of a directive)

he said he thought the Harding romance scene he showed was cringe. I couldn't disagree with him more, I found it was very cute and heartwarming. It got a bit embarrassing with Rook crawling on the floor and trying to grab at Harding but 60-70% of the scene I thought was very nicely done. And even the crawling on the floor I could probably excuse a bit because Rook was basically high as a kite. I know I've been overly giggly and not thinking exactly straight when I had a bit too many puffs of grass. Agreed. Sure it's goofy, but what the hell Harding is a cute romantic dwarf who's always been quite sweet. Works for her. Made me want to romance her actually.
My own real objection is that it seemed like they were copying Rogue from X-Men with the effect just one little kiss can have on you. Good job Rook didn't do the Descent. We were wandering around near actual rivers and lakes of lyrium, before actually going inside of a Titan, and seemed to stay fairly level headed. Templars don't lose it after one drink of lyrium. They have to imbibe it over several years before their brain rots. The goofy dwarf in DAO had also been in contact with it over a prolonged period, not just one touch and he was gone. Raw lyrium is dangerous to mages and to a lesser extent other races, which is why dwarves need to be the ones who mine it. So, is Harding now just pure lyrium? Also, Rook had apparently noticed that Harding was glowing long before the kiss and didn't think to mention it or wonder if they should check whether it was a threat? I don't mean from a kissing point of view but just generally. The world is depending on the Veilguard, so might that not have been something worth exploring? It is a bit like the decision over the Well of Sorrows. The Inquisitor is the only person in the world who can close rifts. Perhaps they ought to exercise a bit of caution about drinking from something they don't fully understand, whether the god allegedly controlling it is dead or not. Mind you, if you think about it for any length of time you realise the Veilguard is just stuffed full of personnel with potential health hazards: Harding and her lyrium; Lucanis and his demon; Emmrich and his skeleton (apparently a spirit of curiosity, I think, so what if it starts to become curious about things you would rather it didn't?); Davrin and his taint (did we learn nothing from DAI?); Taash is a proto dragon who can incinerate people who anger her; Bellara who has an enthusiasm about discovering ancient magical secrets (I can't imagine how that could backfire). So, that just leaves Neve who is relatively "safe" considering DA2 suggested that all mages are just ticking time bombs who can be possessed if they get too stressed. Not to mention the Caretaker, a spirit guardian who is keeping shop for Solas. No wonder Rook treats them all with kid gloves and feels they need to micromanage every trivial conflict.

Small comment - I'm not even sure it's a problem per se, but I do assume many people here won't be buying the game any time soon, so for us any discussion is still more about skepticism than actual criticism. Fair. And it's a journey isn't it. I totally expect that many members of this thread won't be playing at launch, waiting for a deep sale or perhaps never. But it's only reasonable that a discussion: 'don't like this' makes reference at some point to what 'this' is from screenshots or video (or even let's plays as are already being posted) of a game that exists. None of that will happen instantly, the game only launches today. Your point is entirely reasonable. And yes, same spoiler rules apply. There was a poll on this thread a little while back that decided that game spoilers should be tagged - it's not an open free-for-all.

Spoilers discussing a scene from MattyPlays' review (at least I hope I'm not jumbling it up in my head with another youtuber's review) that hasn't been shown in any official marketing material I work in a place with a lot of incompetent people in positions they don't deserve and they seem to lack the ability to believably earn that position by just bullshitting their way there so I have no idea how they got there besides special treatment/some kind of nepotism/pure desperation to have more bodies around, so a guard that's a moron being bossed around by someone with a strong display is brutally realistic to me...and sad. That said, there's nothing stopping that guard from going to talk to another, being called an idiot, and having a more competent one realize what's going on. I think Matty stopped showing that scene when the group was talking after the guard had left, so I'm not sure what the aftermath may have been. But I will agree that casually talking about shanking the antagonist within earshot of other Venatori, without even huddling up and whispering, was rather dumb.

Spoilers about Harding's character arc and romance and companion baggage Fair enough on the Rogue comparison, I hadn't thought of that but it makes sense. However, considering her magic seems to start displaying apparently as soon as the ritual is disrupted, I would assume her and Rook actually talk about her situation a number of times before the romance. Romance scenes take a while to get going so I'm not inclined to believe that her and Rook don't discuss what's happening to her and how she's changing before that point. If it turns out that, no, they actually don't talk at all, then that will be a missed opportunity, obviously. And that loopy dwarf from Orzammar didn't get loopy just by being near lyrium, he actually had raw lyrium get into his blood, I would assume kissing someone who becomes infused with lyrium would have similar effects. And if the companions are ticking time bombs, honestly, bring it on. People have been complaining about them being milquetoast and safe. DA2's cast of unhinged weirdoes and lunatics was great.

Watching Xboxcowboy’s stream right now and Solas is an A1 gaslighter. He immediately makes everything your fault and puts all the pressure on you. And it’s written and acted convincingly. Seen it before but seeing it again after all the bad dialogue is like cleansing your palette.

I'm taking a shot at the Taash and Isabela situation as well, why not! The scene is not made because it's important or funny. It's made to preach about the severity of misgendering someone, and what the appropriate level of being apologetic is and how seriously you should as a person take such grave misconduct, in Thedas AND in the real world. It's kind of a power fantasy in a way.
Then there's also the argument that Isabela wouldn't respond this way because of misgendering someone. Oh yes, I will shank and steal, but MISGENDERING? I will do push ups for you as punishment for my horrid deeds! Like is that really Isabela we have gotten to know and love..? Which then further adds to the power fantasy, that even morally dubious people would never want to hurt their non-binary pals' feelings!
It just takes you out of the supposedly immersive roleplaying experience when stuff like this is made SO BLATANT. I just caught that on Asmongold's channel...and all I can say is...ugh. Who the hell wrote that scene...I feel like my IQ drop 10 points just by watching it. And Isabela looks ridiculous...not to mention she should be in her 50's. It's like some cartoon for 8 year olds on conflict resolution. Gahhh!

Who the hell wrote that scene...I feel like my IQ drop 10 points just by watching it. And Isabela looks ridiculous...not to mention she should be in her 50's. It's like some cartoon for 8 year olds on conflict resolution. Gahhh! Its like Bioware wants to be mocked. That scene is like a caricature of progressive people that the anti woke type usually does. But nope its not a caricature or satire, its a real scene.

Now we're at Bellara and she sounds every bit of Dora the Explorer minus the endearing qualities.

There's so many different ways they could've gone about the whole Taash is non binary, something that fits the ingame universe. Saw many times that they could've just come up with a Qun name for it or something. That's just preaching now, lecturing.

And they probably knew she would be, but they couldn't let that get in the way of the message. Suddenly I have an urge to do ten push ups.

Its like Bioware wants to be mocked. That scene is like a caricature of progressive people that the anti woke type usually does. But nope its not a caricature or satire, its a real scene. There is an old saying that there is no such thing as bad publicity so long as it gets you noticed. However, these days there is such a thing as bad publicity and this probably accounts for why EA Bioware have been shutting down the poster every time this clip (and others on the subject) appears. Which suggests they do know it looks really bad to the average player and it is those people who they are relying on for their sales. It may only be 2 minutes from a 50+ hour game but they obviously wanted it to be in there but not let people know in advance it was going to be in there. It remains to be seen how it will impact on initial sales. Probably not a lot. They were probably hoping to get the majority of sales in before the shit hit the fan over its inclusion. However, it probably is distracting from the real issues with the game, such as the boring and repetitive game play, the goofy redesign of certain races and creatures in the game, particularly the darkpsawn, the absolute butchering of the lore, the lack of true role playing when it comes to your PC and the juvenile dialogue in some of the character interactions. It may be redeemed by the last 5 hours according to even the negative reviews so it is a matter of whether you can grin and bear it for 70-80% of the game just to get to that final resolution.

I'll say the Taash debacle is disappointing.
It wasn't handled with grace and now it's like they've dumped gasoline on a fire. Roaches like Asmongold are taking the narrative and running miles with it.
Which is to say, it may have been hamfisted but I'm seeing a lot of overreacting from opportunists.

Yeah if it was only one bad scene I would still buy the game. But it represents a much larger problem, the writing in general is atrocious and immature. Easily the worst of any DA game from what I have seen. I hate the artstyle too and the combat is dumbed down. I am interested to see how it well it sells. Its at the top of the Steam charts right now but most established IP's manage that.

In the scene described, Taash's mother actually tells us the term and then Taash screeches at her to just understand or something to that effect. This 'dragon slayer' is very unlikeable. And they probably knew she would be, but they couldn't let that get in the way of the message. Suddenly I have an urge to do ten push ups. To be honest, I had more of an issue with her giving Neve a hard time for the way she dressed. From what I understand of it, the mother could be the reason Taash is so angry about her identity because she told her she "acted like a man". Only thing is, so far as I can tell, beyond not wearing a dress and being a fighter, there didn't seem to be more to it than that. Now even Sten only said my female Warden was doing a man's job in being in a martial role. I don't recall he had a problem with how I dressed. After all, the Qun are all about practicality and if you are out in the field, much less fighting, then you are going to be dressed like I was.
What I find disappointing is that you couldn't just say to Taash, it seems your mother is still of a Qunari mindset. Look around you, everywhere else in Thedas you will find women he don't wear dresses and are soldiers and in other roles they would not be permitted under the Qun. I don't know why Neve didn't say that instead of sending her off to talk to people who struggle with their identity in Minrathous, likely because of the expectations of the Altus. However, that would have been the appropriate response for Rook, particularly if they are also a female fighter.
Now it is possible that you would get that option if you took an earlier prompt where instead of encouraging embracing multi-culturism, you could pick to point out the drawbacks instead (according to the prompt), although it is entirely possible it wouldn't come out like that. Nevertheless, surely the point of approving of having multiple backgrounds is that you take the best bits from each culture and reject the rest? Having rigid gender roles is one of the negative aspects of the Qun philosophy but there are plenty of others I could point to. The conversation seemed to focus on their "sharing" society that looks out for everyone within it. Hmm, like only the Qun do that.
Still, just as Masked Empire gave a distorted view of the Dalish to anyone not familiar with earlier games, so DAtV gives a distorted view of the Qun, particularly considering I have yet to see a clip with a genuine Qun in it. Taash's mother seems to have defected from the Antaam, which had already broken away from Par Vollen. I have no idea what she was doing with the Antaam in the first place. What use did they have for researchers of lore when they started their war? Researchers would either be part of those individuals under the control of the Ariqun or Arigena. How did she even know Taash was her daughter if she was born under the Qun? As they admit, children are taken away at birth to be raised by the tamassrans. So was her mother really her tamassran? She calls her "Tama". No doubt the full game will fill in at least some of the gaps.
