Sometimes it feels like there's only a connection to the party member you're either romancing or share a background with (or both). As a Lord Of Fortune I can say that there is very little bonding over that to be had with Taash. Of course you do get faction specific answers here and there. But I don't have the impression those two are closer because of shared background than Rook and the others. Emmrich is the only one even showing interest in Rook's backstory and asking him questions about his own life while everyone else is just trauma dumping on Rook. There is very very little roleplaying to be had about who your Rook is because of that. I hear a Mourn Watch Rook has a kind of special relationship with Emmrich? I don't regret picking LoF exactly because I like my Rook being one, but it sure is underwhelming. Not sure why that faction is a thing in this game tbh. It doesn't really add any value to the story. Locked into the Neve romance now and I like it so far but tbh it's mostly me thinking Rook talking in a husky voice with her is hot rather than Neve or that romance specifically. I basically just made a character I'd like to romance and Neve is just there, haha. No, Neve is alright with me. I think she has good chemistry with Rook actually. I already had that impression from the short bit in the promo material. I mean it's cliche and all with the "you're trouble" shtick but it's one of the few positive aspects so far. And I find Neve's cynicism and reserved nature the most relatable. And I like her voice actress now, does a good job with the character. Somebody who actually makes sense for the environment she grew up in and no goofy sidekick. Emmrich is nice and perhaps the most interesting companion but my god Manfred is Disney AF, so is Assan. The forced cuteness of EVERYTHING is killing me.

I chose veil jumpers because I didn't feel like there is too much difference between them and the veil jumper outfit looked the coolest but me and Bellara feel like we are not from the same planet

Once again, BG3 proves otherwise. Sure there is a minority - on both sides - that would bark no matter what, but the average person simply dislike being patronized. It's not a difficult concept to grasp. I'm not at the point where I can believe that the hate launched at this game came from people who simply dislike being patronized when I've been here since the beginning to witness these very same people salivating at the possibility of this game being even mildly left.
From pronouns and top surgery scars to the characters being referred to as diversity hires before we even heard most of them speak to the game being likened to Concord months before release.
This doesn't come from a place of disliking a patronizing tone, it's that they don't want these elements to exist full stop. And how prevalent it is in this fandom and many others, it is visibly not a loud minority. Let me relate something personal.
In the 1970s, I came to live in a Catholic social environment. We were nonreligious, and it felt like everyone around me told the same incomprehensible stories that made no sense to the point of denying the most obvious facts of the human condition, and tried to impose those on me as The Truth (TM). I became a rebel. Not always a very polite one. I was a teenager after all.
Decades of peace followed, during which I played games with all sorts of characters and as all sorts of characters.
Since around 2016, things began to feel very similar to the 1970s. This time it was a specific brand of so-called (and in my opinion, very much misnamed) social progressivism that had been coming out of American academia since the late 1990s, which the creative sector eventually gobbled up and tries to this day to impose on me as The Truth (TM) through the medium of their games and TV shows. And so, I'm a rebel again. More polite this time I hope, but equally unyielding in my stance.
And I wonder, how many of those out there whose voices sound so hateful to you are like me, confronted with a worldview that makes no sense to them, yet told they must believe, and just don't manage to stay as polite because they're as young as I was in the 1970s.
Poor Taash. In a way, I do actually like Taash because I disassociate the character from the bad writing that doesn't feel like an authentic part of any person living in Thedas. Taash could've been great as a character with edges. At last! And being nonconformist about gender expectations, that I have always encouraged. But its not hateful bigots that robbed Taash of greatness, but the people who used them as a vehicle for indoctrination and to impose on us the terms for our understanding of the world. Which after significant study, make even less sense to me than before.

I played Mourn Watch first and romanced Emmrich and I liked it, the dialogue made it really feel like they hit it off (even just platonically) and bonded over their shared interests and experiences. Especially with necromancy being unnerving to the others, it's clear that Emmrich is written to be especially friendly to and bond with a fellow Watcher. He's friendly in general of course but there's a good amount of extra dialogue with him specifically for Mourn Watch.
I've seen people complaining about how Rook's chosen romance feels like it gets so little content and I'm noticing the companions do seem the not even acknowledge the one with Davrin, compared to the stuff Lucanis/Neve and Harding/Taash get. Regardless of opinions on romances in game, I feel like it just adds further to Rook feeling kind of separated from the group. Which makes more sense for someone like the Inquisitor, not someone Varric found randomly.

Playing around on my warden save it really strikes me how distant you feel from the rest of the team - because of course they love the leadership thing so aside from my friendly banters with Davrin I really don't feel connected to the others. Sometimes it feels like there's only a connection to the party member you're either romancing or share a background with (or both). Perhaps that's just me. I just watched that video about Commander Shepard playing The Veilguard (hilarious ROTFL material BTW), and it reminded me of how lively the party banter used to be in other Bioware games. I find it really odd that they apparently didn't even attempt to go there in DAV.

I will say Davrin and Lucanis are a good pair to bring along if you want any spice in banter. It's tame compared to, say, Anders and Fenris, but it's at least "oh thank you, two people who actually kind of realistically have some issues with each other".
I guess it just all comes back to "you are in charge now, random person, deal with it" where the background is told to you but not really shown.

There is no part of me that cares to tell you "what you must believe". But what you opened with, equating attempts of religious indoctrination "by denying the most obvious facts of the human condition" to people who ask for basic human decency at the bare minimum isn't a stance I sympathize with. Polite, but underhanded.

It's not really clear what you're rebelling against. Can you elaborate?

Such a brilliant and great depiction of the differences in their cultures. Fenris, someone who's only known slavery at the hands of magic users, who has only known pain and betrayal, watches Merrill throw away everything he ever wanted in pursuit of 'ghosts'. And Merrill , who only wants to lift the Dalish up and doesn't seem to understand why or how other elves simply don't care about the past. And this doesn't get better. There's no scene where Dr. Hawke sits them down to mitigate their conflict. They deal with it as adults. Knowing that they got rid of this entirely in Veilguard makes me sick.

True. At least not that we can see. What we can see is that they proceed to work alongside each other and don't receive therapy with Dr. Hawke to continue.

And BG3 is being championed as an example of "inclusivity done right" when in reality it's just very successful and goes against the "go nebulous W-word go broke" crowd's narrative.
These anti woke assholes ruined the discussion for sure. They usually do, to be fair. And they feel they get a free pass to vent in this thread, and then we all get labeled as those kind of jerks.

The culture war sucks. One side defends poor quality and calls criticism bigotry, and the others gotten so defensive that they call anything 'woke' at the drop of a hat. Just look at Ghosts of Yotei. We got one trailer and culture war descended like vultures. Personally I'm accustomed by now to be considered a "conservative" by one side and a "woke" by the other. And honestly that works for me, I have zero respect for fanatic ideologies. Same, really - because I also can't stand fanaticism on either end of the spectrum, I'm either one camp or the other on places like this. Either I go too far or don't go far enough in what I say.
This is why I usually don't post much these days.

We haven't gotten ANYTHING from Suckerpunch yet. A single trailer, some tweets from the voice actor, NOT the character she'll be voicing. They look crazy right now. Right? Like....can we all take a chill for a moment and wait for more information first?
Am I a bit sad it's not Jin? Sure I am; i'd be lying if I said I wasn't. Game reveal still had me excited and I'm waiting to hear more about it before I can start forming any opinions.

Here in this thread you get simply a number of people expressing their personal opinions in a reasonable way. I've never visited 4Chan. I understand it's dreadful. This thread runs to over 200 pages, on the whole it is indeed people expressing their personal opinions in a reasonable way. We shouldn't pretend that this thread hasn't on occasion generated deeply offensive content. Such content sits in a 'sin bin' in the moderators' area and many of the posters who produced it are no longer here. I think it's fair to say that this thread generates more 'reports' than the rest of BSN put together (checks report data from the last month, 59% are this thread). It's a shame that over the last 4 months a good deal of 'culture war bigotry' has drowned out both genuine praise and genuine criticism, making a civil discussion difficult to hold. Welcome to the modern internet, I guess. This isn't to dredge anything back to the surface again, but just a small thank you to Sofa, Heimdall and Dragon King for still doing their best to keep this thread not too derailed but letting us still conduct ourselves in an adult-like manner. Many may feel sometimes things are....going too far...but you guys just have to be as fair as you can, and that's not always an easy call to make. So thank you
