Busche and Weekes (and I suppose rest of the writing staff) absolutely had a plan for how to include more trans-related things in the game, and some of the writing around it was complete garbage. But I genuinely think this is a subject that will almost never be well explored or included in a video game setting, especially a medieval inspired fantasy RPG of all things. It's just really hard to write well without it feeling really narcissistic, navel-gazing or transparently ideological/political. I'd say the same about any coming out stories though. I'm not sure "medieval inspired fantasy" is relevant here. Thedas is awfully different from medieval Europe in this particular aspect. It's relevant in the sense that Thedas not a modern world in the slightest, and that modern topics of modern gender theory being explored with modern western vernacular are going to feel incredibly off place. Thedas does not even have a word for bisexuality or homosexuality, but non-binary is just flying out of peoples mouths and is a topic everyone except Taash's mother understands.

I'm a little surprised it wasn't mentioned how ignorant and ironically intolerant Taash comes across a lot. Yesterday I had the infamous conversation with Emmrich about how Taash is creeped out by necromancy. And Emmerich was extremely apologetic while Taash just walked all over Emmrich and couldn't understand how other people cannot like talking about dragons. Now even if we ignore how dragons in Thedas are mostly associated with the blight and destruction and her comment feels like some D&D nerd getting upset over their fantasy stuff rather than an opinion anybody in the setting would have, Taash frequently comes across as a crybaby who is just unpleasant to be around and people need to walk on eggshells around them. That would seriously piss me off were I non binary. I'm not saying minority group characters shouldn't have flaws but I get the feeling this was not an intentional contradiction of the character. Especially given how the others are basically the nicest people without such flaws. Which in turn is poor writing too, of course. So to me the message is stay away from those drama queen snowflakes. And that's sad. I don't necessarily think its a bad thing that non binary characters can be as ignorant and unpleasant as anyone else. It's definitely feels weird here though as unlike a character like Sera in Inquisition this game has decided that real conflict or challenge to views isn't allowed.

Taash saying "nobody likes being a woman" is clearly not hate-speach, like some here seem convinced it is. It's about them being insecure and immature and projecting their feelings on other people. Yes, they're being rude, which is actually relatable to me, because that's how I act sometimes when I feel I'm not in control or can't express myself freely.
I actually don't even like Taash, or most of Weekes' characters. They don't feel like real people to me because they always talk in some quirky way and never let up. But more importantly because they always force me to change them in some deeply personal way that I think is just fucked up. Like why do I choose if Taash should be more Qunari or more Rivaini? They're not even great friends, they met a few weeks ago and are mostly just working together. And even if they were lifelong friends, it feels so shitty to tell someone how they should be.
Somehow it was even worse in Inquisition with Cole. Why not let him go through his journey and become who he wants? Why do I get to say if he should be a human or a spirit, without any input from him? You literally decide on what his nature should be. I remember looking on the forums back then to see if anyone though this was fucked up only to find a tweet from Weekes being dismissive of wierdos who wanted a third choice. I was really hurt because I loved the dark and scary Cole in the novel written by Gaider, but in this game he was just quirky, spoke in verses and did all those bad things in the past cause "oops, I didn't know, I'm all good now". Let's not forget about the Iron Bull. Can't expect him to decide whether to save his team or follow the Qun. Better outsource the decision to someone else, it's not that important.
Those decisions should be made by the characters if they were intended to feel like real people. Now they feel like dolls to be played with.
I'm not saying all of Weekes' characters are bad. Briala for example felt great both in the novel and in game, even though she's not present for long enough in the game to actually get to know her. Solas was very boring to me in Inquisition. Without his background as the dread wolf he felt just arrogant and annoying and not much else. The background itself wasn't written by Weekes, it was in the worldbuilding done by Gaider I assume, so I don't find what they did with Solas compelling.
I do think Weekes loves this setting very, very much. I just find most of their contributions to it to be lacking.

I could change nothing about me or my life and declare I'm feeling non binary and hop on to that LGBTQ train today. That's how dumb this all is. That's what I've thought for some time. Most of us could claim to be non-binary because most of us aren't walking stereotypes. I don't get that mindset some people have either. There are plenty of people since the dawn of time till today that do not follow gender stereotypes yet they are perfectly cis individuals and also straight. Many women have been and even still are tomboys or don't have traditionally feminine interests yet they identify as women and are straight. There are also plenty of men who do not give a fuck about traditionally masculine interests and are cis and straight. It has jack to do with sexuality/gender identity. Ok this is the last I have to say about this matter I promise.

Did this thread get invaded by 4chan or something? Trans people existing is political and "ideology being shoved down our throat"? Getting flashback to when they said the same thing about women, and then gays, in games. Same talking points, with "medieval world", "realism" and all. Pointing out that sex and gender are different things and that they are not binary(intersex exists, people) is irrational religious thinking? You literally have to put in work to be bothered by someone else's gender. Maybe you're the one clinging to an old rigid status-quo and treating it like something sacred, a religion maybe? Just several posts up from yours:

Where did anyone say any of these things? Did I miss something? Watching the thread carefully, I think you are correct, the discussion is currently game-related and fairly civil. Though given the subject matter, it's walking the cliff edge. I have a good deal of empathy for mele's points. Let's head away from this.

And that's sad. It's as if they remembered that Iron Bull liked dragons and like with everything else, tried to replicate that aspect of his character and failed to understand what made it work. And even when it did, that it was weird. And while it was weird, it was fighting and killing them that made him happiest. I seriously wonder if they considered the implications of Taash as a representative of non-binary people in their universe. Did they consider that if it's not a character creator abomination that Taash's face is the face on every single Veilguard thumbnail shitting on the game? Did they consider that the Isabela push up scene would be relentlessly mocked and ridiculed for the sanctimonious indignant garbage that it is? Everything about the character is a lesson in prudence. They could have done a million things. They could have come up with another in-universe term for her condition. They could still have her throw her tantrums and be a great value Krogan, but turned her abrasiveness towards her adversaries and not her allies. There are few traits that are as unlikeable as someone who treats their friends like trash. I just don't understand the logic of saddling your most petulant and obnoxious character with such baggage and have it handled so poorly. But I'm sure BioWare will learn all the right lessons from this, and we have nothing to worry about with Mass Effect.

I'd very much argue it is hate speech. You explanation as to why Taash is expressing such a bigoted view is fair enough. I can equally understand why Sera is bigoted but that doesn't mean not addressing that elephant shaped thing, which is the game problem. Personally my preference is to reject Cole as you think he might be a demon.(sadly Weekes or someone forgot that was even an option) I agree if you want to recruit him, not sure why the idea of not engaging with the choice isn't an option.

Iron Bull and the choice presented in his quest make complete sense. Iron Bull has lived most of his life only taking orders and having someone else make the decisions in his stead. So during this intensely conflicted situation he is in, he is unable to make a decision, and he needs the Inquisitor to decide for him because Inquisitor is the one really in charge, or the closest one Bull can depend on to make the decision.
Makes perfect sense to me, and if you decide to cut his ties with the Qun, in Trespasser he shows autonomy as he stands up for himself, rejecting Viddasala's commands to betray the Inquisition.

I think it's understandable to be frustrated at clumsy, preachy writing regardless of your feelings about the catechism. I more or less agreed with what Philip Pullman was trying to convey in His Dark Materials and still found the sequels insufferable. I like Dorian in DA:I, but still his companion quest was too PSA-ish for my taste.
Same deal with Iron Bull lecturing the player about Krem—a character too minor for me to have any feelings about him—, which strikes me as similar to this Taash and Isabela scene. Even though I don't object to the sentiment, I find these scenes mildly irritating because I can't figure out their purpose beyond self-indulgent navel gazing. Players coming to them will either already know the drill, and are presumably supposed to feel smug and morally superior as a result, or they will predictably be put off by the didacticism and condescension. So these scenes are either preaching to the choir or finger wagging to the unconverted, accomplishing nothing in the process, not even, because of the stiltedness the didacticism forces on them, compelling character writing.
It's difficult to talk about this because you can end up encouraging bad actors who are just mad non-binary characters are in games at all and conceal it behind the screen of legitimate criticism. You don't have to get non-binary people, I certainly don't, but you also don't have to be a prick about it.

Personally one of the things that disappoints me the most about DAV is the fact that the series has lost the classic DA debauchery, there was still some of that in DAI (most romances featured nudity). I hear DAV has returned to the fade to black. BG3 had juicy nudity, demonstrating once again that there is nothing DAV can do better or equal as BG3. I'm sorry but I like me some tasteful nudity in my games, it adds to the romance experience.

It's definitely feels weird here though as unlike a character like Sera in Inquisition this game has decided that real conflict or challenge to views isn't allowed. Agreed, not a bad thing in the right context. Just sticks out because none of the other companions have any real flaws. So I don't understand what BioWare is trying to say here. Sera was a LOT better written and you have a much better understanding why she is the way she is and it's quite heart breaking. I also liked the paradox of her being uneducated and biased but actually incredibly insightful and observant. It's a complex character. I didn't like her as a person but she is very well written. I haven't finished Taash's arc yet, finished the visit to her mom last night, but everything about that character is clumsy writing with some questionable aspects as to what this is supposed to signify. I understand they are basically a melodramatic ignorant teenager but why single the NB character out as the only difficult one? And why can we not call Taash out on it more? You could boot Sera from the inquisition for her behavior. Not saying Taash deserves that. Taash is still fluffy compared to Sera's disturbing violent outbursts. Sera's personal quest was horrifying to me, lol.

Krem didn't make demands of anyone. He just existed in the world. You could ask "Why live as a man?", which I found to be an excellent phrasing that does not assume any particular view of the matter to be correct, and you got a perfectly reasonable explanation. All that was required of the player was tolerance.
Taash, meanwhile, does make demands. Taash demands to be addressed in a certain way by me. And that is my domain, not Taash's. You don't get to make demands about how I talk. I would usually comply with a polite request, but I also reserve a right to disagree with anyone's view of themselves. And if I do, the burden of tolerance is on the other party.

I agree that the characters' decisions should be their own and not the PC's, the player character's role should be simply to assist with their predicaments (Loyalty Missions if you will) but the squadmates' choices ought to be ultimately their own when it comes to their personal quests, as they are part of their own personality, which is (or as least should be) different and separate from your character. ME2 was better at this, I felt like I was dealing with actual different people with their own agendas despite being my allies, and I was helping them deal with THEIR problems rather than deciding their fate, even if the main reason I was doing it was to keep them fully focused on the main mission.

The more I play the more I understand SkillUp's review. It's difficult to play consistently. It's so trite and boring. The dialogue is boring. The combat is becoming boring. The characters are boring. The world as pretty as it is, is boring. It's so fucking safe. Not a fucking thing that is happening is treated with any importance. Everything is trivialized. It's all no big deal. Just taking the game for the loathing insult that it is, isn't enough. Such a terrible game.

Gimme proper conflict, factional and among the squad itself.

This video raises a question I had wondered myself: why exactly did Solas have such a hate boner for the Grey Wardens? In DAI, Solas expressed horror at the order’s plan to seek out and destroy the remaining Old Gods. The fact that Corypheus was manipulating the Wardens or that they were using an army of demons seemed secondary to the notion of trying to pre-empt the Blights. Thing is, DATV reveals the Old Gods are just high dragons bound to the Evanuris.
Setting aside the underwhelming nature of this revelation, why then was Solas opposed to destroying the remaining Old Gods? Killing them would actually prevent any future Blights and weaken the Evanuris should they actually escape the Fade. In fact, Solas should have *supported* the plan, had it not been secretly corrupted by Corypheus and Nightmare.
I suspect this is another indication that the Old Gods were meant to be something else, but BioWare pivoted mid-production and decided “Eh, let’s wrap up that nasty Blight business so future Dragon Age games can instead focus on … *check notes* … a bunch of spooky telepathic Illuminati living across the sea as the TRUE villains.

If old gods are just blighted dragons tied to the elven gods, why would their soul even really matter in the long run?

Solas hates everything because he's an asshole But it seems killing the archdemon made the elven gods die in the black city. They were substaining the veil. Solas also locked up the main source of the Blight. I imagine killing all archdemons, would have fully unleashed the Blight. Something Solas doesn't want at all.
But we have no idea of what was his plan for the Blight anyway.

Where did anyone say any of these things? Did I miss something? Watching the thread carefully, I think you are correct, the discussion is currently game-related and fairly civil. Though given the subject matter, it's walking the cliff edge. I have a good deal of empathy for mele 's points. Let's head away from this. Have you been to 4chan? There is incredibly offensive and disgusting things said there, and for that user to just jump in and compare this thread to that is not cool. However, for the most part everyone ignored it. Then for you to come in and support mele shows a clear bias. One of the rules of the forum is the following; Is this allowed as long as its targeting the regulars in this Skepticism thread?

Yeah, 4chan is the David Lynch's Giedi Prime of the internet, I don't get the comparison. Here in this thread you get simply a number of people expressing their personal opinions in a reasonable way.
