Are these games canon anymore? I've read that Disney said it isn't and only the movies are canon now The PT, the OT Special Edition, the main Clone Wars series and Rebels, and everything else post-TFA, is canon now--as opposed to how they used to give the EU various levels of canonicity, with only the movies having been truly immovable canon. Lucasfilm and its "Story Group" are in charge of managing new stories and continuity, not Disney. So now everything counts, post-reset. As someone else pointed out, KOTOR 1 and possibly 2 may eventually end up canonized retroactively, or at least the broad strokes. But hasn't happened yet.

I know this is a KOTOR thread, but I wanted to know general opinion of TOR. My dad bought me a laptop for Christmas, and I haven't had a PC since 2009. I never really cared for PC gaming, always preferred consoles (No master race BS, please). But I had the idea to download TOR, just wanted opinion of it. Thank-you. SWTOR changed a lot a couple of months ago, but it is a typical MMO in its set-up. It has loads of abilities you have to KB to play fluidly. I had 40+ keybinds per character to manage pvp and raiding. If you have never played a MMO, there is a lot to take in, particularly after the last restructure that made gearing multiple characters much, much harder than before. The game has a huge variety of content, but a lot of it is best experienced with a good guild or MMO friends. Solo, the game does have tons of content as well, between the class stories, heroics and the alliance building in the end, so if you like story or achievement hunting or strategy type constructs, it might be okay solo for a few months. I would recommend subscription if you want to try it, if only for one or two months. Without sub, the game is hard to enjoy as it limits a ridiculous amount of things. If you have never played a MMO before, a better, very streamlined and short MMO that you can solo free to get introduced to the concepts like crafting and gear progression, dailies, class roles, raids, etc, is Blade and soul. It will take at most a couple of weeks to get through it and as long as you don't do the extensive end game there, it's a nice MMO demo with a great combat mechanics and somewhat entertaining story. It's probably also pretty much empty now, and they retrofitted it to hand out much of the gear you need to get through the story,so you can figure stuff out without people bothering you.

No, you have to play a race to level 50 to unlock it for all classes or buy it from the GTN or cas shop. If you are subbed, some classes will be available as Twilek at creation, so you'd take that guy to 50 while subbed, then can make any other class Twilek. The only two species opened without sub is Zabrack and human.

Zabracks are actually pretty neat looking in the game, and they do not have lekku to clip or get deformed. Twi'leks also have less of a variety of the "heads" to chose from (all the recolored humans, including the Zabs) will have the same variety as the humans), so in all likelihood you will be seeing your character's face on the NPCs a few times. The first character I created was a Zabrack Sage, and I am ashamed to admit she was in my mind in some distant way related to Bao-Dur. A fangirl moment, heh.

Out of my 7 characters, 4 are red Zabraks, one is a human, one is a Mirialan, and one is a Cathar.

I like KOTOR. I started Bioware gaming with it. I love KOTOR2. Even with it releasing with so many issues, and yes, some story concerns like a Sith character being so OP and whatever.
SWTOR's story being like a cartoon isn't so bad, but SWTOR's story being like a bad cartoon while other SW cartoons are airing with better writing - THAT'S bad.

Rebels did bring in the Kotor style republic ships, and one got a prominent role in Rogue One's climatic space battle. They also brought Thrawn into the new continuity, but Zahn's stories aren't canon. The old EU is now a buffet to pick and choose from.

SWTOR's story being like a cartoon isn't so bad, but SWTOR's story being like a bad cartoon while other SW cartoons are airing with better writing - THAT'S bad. I did not mind either the class stories, nor the Clone Wars. But I did not like much of the non-vanilla story, and not that enthusiastic about Rebels. Must be the setting hype and fatigue... As far as species, I like Twileks and Zabracks from KOTor times, was pleasantly surprised how well my two Miraluka turned out, particularly my M!Guardian! Purebloods also looked rather spiffy, and in the end my most loved were my Mirialians, a couple of Cathar, and a Rattataki... honestly, as long as I could get each character click, I ended up liking it, and playing it a lot.

KOTOR 1 is what got me into Bioware games. I went backwards to BG after that. Then to ME1. Wonder if they will ever make a KOTOR 3.

KotOR was my first Bioware game and the first RPG that I ever played. I still love the story (the second game just a little bit more though), but the combat makes me want to laugh, nobody taking cover when using blasters, etc. I think Mass Effect ruined the combat in KotOR for me.

Loved Kotor1, played darkside first time round and nothing compared to putting the upstart apprentice in it's place, with some epic dialogue for that moment, not to mention the little nod to Bastilla during the battle, when she's talking to the jedi master over comms.
Kotor2, despite it's unfinised nature, poor pacing and general lack of polish, was the superior outing for me. The writing was better, I liked the darker tone and relished the deconstruction of the black and white morality of the SW universe. It came pretty lcose to perfection with it's companion influence and alignment system. If your gonna have an alignment system in a game, make it a good one. Kotor2's came close to that but just missed the mark. I could turn my companions into sith, but they still complain and lose influence when I killed somebody or did something dark side. Pity. If it had just been abit more reactive.
Plus, Kreia. TOTALLY. AWESOME. CHARACTER! Bindo was great, but Kreia was profound.

Absolutely, I have yet to see another rpg create an alignment+influence system that was quite as good. If only Kotor2 has managed to fully link influence with companion alignment, I think we would see alot more of it. Despite the general dislike of alignment systems in modern games.

Kotor 2 is such a mixed bag for me. The gameplay somehow got worse from Kotor and the game is littered with the same named items to the point of absurdity. It also takes control away from the protag way to often, like almost every planet you have to play some random companion for a section. Or how story elements are being revealed to the player before the character, which is ok in small doses, not as exposition heavy as Kotor II and NWN II.
There are so many frustrations that ruin the experience for me. It breaks immersion, which is a shame because it is after all a fracking amazing game in the writing department. It is a problem i have with Obsidian in general, the exceptions are Fallout New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity, which i enjoy every aspect of.
So as a pure game i am going to play and experience, i think Kotor is better, but it is after all a game that got to properly finish its development. I feel for Obsidian when it comes to publishers deals, they've had some bad experiences and left a few games cut off from their true potential.

KOTOR was and is still great. It is the game that got me into the whole Star Wars universe. Before I played the game I had never seen a SW movie, but KOTOR changed that for me.

I'm playing KOTOR on my iPad for the first time in many many years and this game never ceases to be good. Such a good story and it's still a fresh Star Wars experience even in 2016. Whaaaaaaaat?!? I can play it on iPad?! Damn. I've been lamenting my inability to play KotOR for months, since I didn't keep my XBox from ages ago. You give me hope. How does it play on iPad? Reasonably well? And, yes, in line with the thread's title, KotOR is so damn good. I believe it is my favorite BioWare game. It's BioWare and it's Star Wars. It has those amazing characters, and that great story. The locales are all enjoyable. Damn, I love this game. well do you have a computer? because you can get it on steam.

I had no idea that Kreia was so popular. I was quite surprised. I mean, why would you want to talk to that old bat when KOTOR 1 already had Jolee Bindo in the 'wise, old mentor' role. I really like Jolee: one of the only Star Wars characters to not have a stupid Expanded Universe story that makes the character worse. Jolee doesn't take any crap.

KOTOR is fine, but KOTOR 2 is the best. It had it's problems (weird ending and more stuff like that) but it also had one of the greatest characters of all time: Kreia. Best moments in KOTOR 1 was going to the Sith Academy... sucks that you have to kill everyone there at the end, though. I liked Bastila's and Revan's connection and Exile's force bond with Kreia. Sith Lords (kotor2) is great, I think it has better environments, great story, and you can persuade companions to come to the light or dark side. But it is much buggier. It can be super buggy.

KOTOR 1 is what got me into Bioware games. I went backwards to BG after that. Then to ME1. Wonder if they will ever make a KOTOR 3. My understanding is that a lot of KOTOR3 story was used for Jedi Knight story in SWTOR.
