I've heard of "crying into your own beer" … but crying into your own popcorn? … Like Joker says, "take pictures."

Again they don't really know what they want to go for. Better leave this franchise dead and buried lest they do another heartbreaking failure like ME:A. I want to remember the original trilogy with how it has been. I guess it won't come out until 2026 or so? If so, probably I will be busy with other stuff to play it.

The only tidbit I've heard about where they might go in the next game was in this video from Liana (Game Informer). She had spoken to Mike Gamble some time back and said they were at least toying with the idea of returning to Shepard's timeline for the next major ME release. Not Shepard himself, but something set during that time. That either means prequel, small scale sidequel, or a canon ending. None of which are good. I'd say canon sequel is straight up necessary for the future of the series.
Do you refuse to play KotOR because there's a canon?

And I can think of nothing that would kill the franchise more. I refuse to play SWTOR, yes. For many reasons. Thankfully with none of them being canon to the Star Wars universe though I can treat that game as no canon to KOTOR.

I will wait for more info. I love MET but didn't finish Andromeda, so I am a bit more cautious about ME5. I really hated the Nomad, so I hope it isn't in ME5.

That either means prequel, small scale sidequel, or a canon ending. None of which are good. It sounded more like a sidequel as it'd be set during Shepard's time. But again, all we know is that it was an idea they were toying with. Can't wait to play Rando McGee who gets overshadowed by the super-bionic soldier who saves the galaxy. Sarcasm aside, if the main story you tell is not as interesting or as fun as a story that unfolds to the side that your characters don't interact with or aren't witness to, you need to rewrite the story. A sidequel to the trilogy is good for a side story, like a novel or a comic or even a text adventure game a la The Last Court, but not for a mainline entry in the major series. "May you live in interesting times" should be taken literally in storytelling. No one wants to be part of the boring B plot.

I for one am interested to see a new Mass Effect game, whether it is Mass Effect Andromeda 2, or a "side-quel" set during the time between ME1 to ME3.
Mass Effect Andromeda did not live up to its potential, but it had enough interesting elements and plot hooks that I think deserve a sequel.
I actually would be more interested in a new group of characters set in the Milky Way, either during any time between ME1 and ME3, or after the events of ME3.

Meh, it's going to be years off.
I'm really more excited about the remastered trilogy. ME1 is going to just be out of this world. I'm picturing driving around a Virmire right now.
I'm thinking that the new game is going to be in the Milky Way. It would make sense after releasing a remastered version of the OT for new players to dive into that universe.

I'm hoping for Andromeda 2 before they try going anywhere near the timeline of the Original Trilogy - sidequel or not - Andromeda deserves a game that has the proper team behind it to get that setting to its full potential. A more personal DA2, ME2 style story would be really good too ^^ explore some new things, explore the stuff that would have been explored in the DLC we didn't get etc. a nice mix of old and new characters, check in on the places we set up as the Pathfinder.

Ideally, I'd like to see MEA2. Part of what made me love Mass Effect so much was the trilogy aspect, where you have "space" for a character arc (or a few), and I'd like to see Ryder get that chance. I'm also flat out curious what happens to Helius.
I'd also love a smaller scale side story. Either as a postscript to MEA where we actually deal with the nitty gritty of living in this new galaxy (which Andromeda glazed over in most places), or a side script to the good ol' Milky Way. I love small scale stories in general, and it'd be fun to get a story about some regular people just living in the Mass Effect universe.
Worst case scenario and it's neither of those? I still get new Mass Effect. And I've enjoyed all the Mass Effect I've gotten so far.
Even (kinda) Pinnacle Station.

How do you figure it will kill the franchise? What evidence have you seen implying the general "gaming populace" would refuse to play a game that establishes a canon for previous games? Because that destroys the entire point of BioWare’s games: Your choices mattering. If they make that canon, what else will they? And then all the “Why didn’t they just do that 10 years ago?” even from those who get the ending they want. Your turn: How will it save the franchise? I strongly disagree that "choices mattering" is the "point" specifically of Bioware games (read their About page: "Creating worlds of adventure, conflict and companionship that inspire you to become the hero of your story."), and I also disagree that it's even about choices really "mattering" rather than being flavor text (that's something I said years ago on the old BSN).
In my opinion it will save the franchise because the franchise needs to move forward past this point in time. Mass Effect isn't about Shepard (and it never was), Mass Effect is about its world, and by staying in the same place they're going to struggle to tell new stories about that world. Just like Disney's attempt to move past the original trilogy in Star Wars - regardless of opinions on the execution, the goal itself is similar.

I kinda felt the same way - Andromeda wasn't a horrible game, but it didn't live up to it's potential (at least for me). Yes, Bioware did some interesting and new things, like the profile switching. It didn't always hit, but they were trying something fresh. Am I excited for the Remaster of the OT? Sure I am! And it's great to hear about it. Would I also be willing to look at a sequel to Andromeda? Sure I would. It's just nice to see a franchise we're all passionate about be talked about with excitement again. As for the hooks part, yeah; there's enough out there to at least try a sequel. After the first Mass Effect (and I know I've said this elsewhere), I honestly felt that, while they could have called Shep's story there (because if I was Shep, I'd be like - "Peace! I'm out!"), there were some hooks still to explore. I also felt it fell a little flat, but was willing to give ME2 a shot (I had enjoyed it enough to play it at least once...which turned into I lost count how many playthroughs of ME2 I've done lol). I'd give Andromeda 2 a shot, but if it too fell flat, then...it might be time to look at a different backdrop. But this is all speculation and while it's far too early to actually know anything concrete about where they're going, let's all at least be open minded and be willing to give it a chance before just hating on it? And look at it objectively instead of just heaping blind praise on it for being a direct ME:A sequel (if it is that)? Maybe that's asking a lot, but still, it's nice to know that the franchise hasn't been shelved completely.

The galaxy's a big place, they could Mandalorian/Rogue One this thing. They don't need to advance the timeline beyond the end of ME3, they can work within it. Rogue One was lucky it happened before TLJ. Mandalorian is no longer doing that well. I don't think a ME space western, or other type of side-quel will save the franchise, in 2026, after 14 years, when the next game will release. Mass Effect has, effectively, not had a presence since 2012 and the remaster is just an effort to bring 2012 to 2021, so it can be "only" five years till the launch of ME"5".
