Hugh Laurie is pretty great in Avenue 5. Weird semi-British comedy about a privatized space luxury liner that gets in trouble. It's farfetched and over-the-top but it got some chuckles. Hugh Laurie's acting is superb, he swaps from British to American accents flawlessly, masterfully done. He also plays a bit of a different role from where I previously knew him, House MD. *** Anyone tried the new Mr and Mrs Smith? I didnt like the original movie, even though it was based on a Greek myth, albeit loosely. Can't remember which one, but I remember my Prof mentioning that. I would have to go back and listen to my lectures. I thoroughly enjoyed that class.

Anyone tried the new Mr and Mrs Smith? Just watched the first three episodes last night! Not bad. Not as much action as I expected, it feels more like a fictional version of a reality show where strangers get married. That...may not be the endorsement you're looking for...but it is actually good so far. A lot of your enjoyment will depend on how you buy in to the John/Jane dynamic. Donald Glover is an amazing actor, but every character he plays is effectively the same person, with the same mannerisms (at least, for what I've seen). Watched episodes 4-6 last night. My initial 'Not bad' has tempered to 'it's OK' . Ironically, these episodes have had a bit more action, but they've also really doubled down on the relationship examination aspect of the show. Donald Glover is Donald Glovering hard in these episodes. There are only 2 episodes to go, so I will almost certainly finish it, but I'm placing this on the ever growing shelf of streaming shovelware. It's competent. All the individual parts are very high quality, but it is missing something - for me, anyway.

I gave it a shot, liked it so far, but I absolutely agree on two parts. 1) Donald Glover is playing Donald Glover playing a Smith. 2) It's missing something vital. That said, I like the wife more than I thought I would. I wasn't sure what to expect from her but I got a sense she'd be trying too hard to be funny. Happily they didn't go that route. The way she brings up her past is kind of interesting. Won't say too much but says enough casually to make you wonder.
Ep 4 was great. The other couple added a bit of what was missing, they were also suspicious as fuck but I was expecting them to get more murdery rather than bait'n'switch em at the helicopter.
*** Halo's season 2 started, if I take what I've seen on the internet at face value, , then I am one of perhaps two or three people that actually liked the show. (For the most part...) So I'm looking forward to what's next. I really liked the giant blonde gun-grease Spartan whose name I cannot recollect, that and Natascha McElhione's nose. And face. And acting. And everything except her stupid shoes.
I thought the ending of S1 addressed a lot of the "concerns" the community had, and made for a rather tragic story to-boot.
Plenty I thought could be better, but I just never saw the Halo story-line as something worth rabidly defending a 1-1 adaptation. After the first game it just gets space-magicky and silly anyways.
Edit: PS: I haven't actually seen the new episode yet so I retain the right to ditch this if they go terribad like Carnival Season 2 or The Nevers Part 2.

The Smiths Yeah, that second couple were great - and we totally thought the mission they dragged the main Smiths on was to ice John and Jane. Halo I am another of the duo/trio that liked it! We should form a club. I haven't played any of the games, and I give no shits to Master Chief removing his helmet. I thought it tried a bit too hard to be 'intelligent sci-fi', when it should have leaned harder in to action/sci-fi. Foundation this is not. But it was fun.

I like the wife more than I thought I would. On this - and I agree, she's great in a way I didn't actually expect - I found out today that Jane was originally supposed to be played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. She left due to "creative differences" with Glover, apparently.

Did...this actually get made? I thought they canned it once Whedon was revealed as a scumbag? Last thing I watched of it was Main lady (True?) is actually Claudia Black who is a time travelling future soldier... There's a second part now finishing off the season. They tell more of spoilered-lady's story, but the entire second half of the season is pretty bad overall. Pacing is sped up to drop a conclusion. It was interesting to see where some of this was going though. Regardless of his personal life, Whedon has an inimitable way of telling a beautifully tragic story.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge. She left due to "creative differences" with Glover, apparently. I could see their dynamic being quite different and a bit more antagonistic. I think this probably worked out for the best. I wasn't a huge fan of hers in the latest Indy. (Wasn't a huge fan of the latest Indy tbf.)
Fine line between banter and acerbity.
Mind you there isn't quite enough witty repartee between the Smiths as I seem to remember in the movie. Then again it isn't Pitt and Jolie so...

HBO doesn't offer subscription in NZ directly, but their content is spread over a couple of providers. Even if I end up hate watching, I liked where they left things before the break. Regardless of his personal life, Whedon has an inimitable way of telling a beautifully tragic story. No doubt. I could see their dynamic being quite different and a bit more antagonistic. i tried Mr and Mrs Smith and got pissed off quite fast in half the (dialogue) scenes, cause it s always the same situation (a good setting and writing btw) and you get it in few seconds, so the next 2 minutes are boring (at least for me) and repeated. That being said, both character and actor are really interesting and promising. But i think i ll pass. Getting bored in the first episode ...

She wrote, produced and starred in one of my favourite British series - Fleabag. Loved her in that. While overall I did not like Kinngdom of the Crystal Turd skull....I liked it right up until the end when it became Close Encounters....It was too much of a mish-mash of American Graffiti (Where were you in '62?) and Close Encounters; it just got overblown with 'stuff' from other projects.... The last Indiana Jones movie, Dial of Destiny, I quite liked. I thought it was a good final installment of the franchise and a fitting send-off for not only Harrison Ford as Indy, but the character of Indy himself. Even if you delete The Crystal Turd from the series and don't count it, the Dial of Destiny still is very fitting. But there are several references to things from Crystal Skull that are meant to show it as an obvious predecessor to Dial. But personally, I discount Kingdom and leave it out....I think of the OT and Dial of Destiny as the Quadrology. BUT if I had to have a package of all 5 movies (including Crystal Turd) to get Dial of Destiny....I suppose I would take it. And actually, that is what I am waiting for the studios to release...a final boxset on BD of all 5 movies. However, Dial of Destiny is at a really decent price point now on Amazon.ca only 26.99. When it first came out you couldn't find it anywhere for any less than $49.99 CAD

Haven't seen the latest Indy. It starts very promisingly, like something out of the Commando comics, but falls short after that. Phoebe Waller-Bridge's role is badly written, and she's mostly wasted as Shaw. I thought it was a good final installment of the franchise Well kind of, yes; it feels like an Indy movie, just not a very good one. Ford is too old, obviously, the script doesn't keep it together, and the bad guys are silly. The CIA agent doesn't make any kind of sense whatsoever. What I'm most miffed about though, is how much wasted potential there was; that could have been a great movie, if handled differently.

Finished up with Firefly/ Serenity. I guess I missed telling everyone I started the Bad Batch season 2...and then also started, or more accurately restarted Fraisier from where me and my wife left off a few years ago...and then started watching Halo season 2. Serenity remains a terrific movie. One of my favorites. Forgot how much manerisms and stuff I picked up from this one season long + movie TV show. Plus the stuff they did with the Reavers and Mal's speech remains an ever precient warning for all time. Halo. Halo, Halo, Halo. For the last few weeks I have been really pumped about this show getting a season 2 and watching it. Now its weird though because I am a big fan of the Halo franchise but after playing the games and watching the show a bit I think pretty concurrently in a weird way I think I realize and just after playing it that A. Halo is a franchise where I am not sure I like the actual content presented, or its a pretty mixed bag lots of peaks, lots of weirdness. And B. Halo is a fascinating writer case study in a lot of what not to do with a franchise. Case in point on this I heard new writer's were taking over the show and almost an entirely new staff from the ground up (Bear McCreary doing at least some of the music is a huge win though) kind of left me a little concerned. But since the trailers make it obvious they are doing the Fall of Reach which, like Revan from Star Wars, is a concept I am very fond of it really didn't dampen my enthiasm...plus a lot of the early promotional material does make this look super good... Think I lost a point I was trying to make. Ahem. But yes despite its issues and despite the ground level content being so lackluster for Halo in the games and the show it still remains one of my favorite fictional settings from a lore and background perspective. Like there is the games and then there is just this whole ice berg of weirdness and horror. Its military aestetic is right up my alley and something I would almost want to do if I were writing military sci fi...and still might...so lets not get sued. And then the ancient stuff with the Forerunners, Precursurs, and Flood is just really juicy, really fun to consider, up my alley, but also bat shit insane that they are jamming it into their military action shooter. Plus I have been again watching a lot of Halo lore vids recently to catch up! So my hype for this season was quite high...and well the first two episodes already deliver a much better more rounded experience then season 1 and more importantly despite how it was recieved and entirely new staff they are building off the ground work that the first season set in motion (much more on that in the spoilers). All the stuff I really liked in season 1 is present and stronger then ever, Pablo Schrier continues to nail it as Master Chief. Jen Talor is always a win. I was smiling to see Kate Kenedy as Kai was back and up to her team mom role. And Natasha McElhorne didn't really have a lot to do but man is it good seeing everyone's favorite anti hero. Which speaking of which also love the inclusion of Joseph Morgan as James Ackerson. He is just as seedy and just as oily and somehow he really nails the 'concerned psych dad thing' but at the same time you know he is lying through his teeth. Just perfection so far. He does remind me of someone. More then one. Anyways. So like I mentioned above this show actually has proven that it can be better then the games, at least one aspect of the games, in pretty much the opening scene. 343 has been quite...directionless...between 4 to 5 to Infinite. Now I actually really liked Halo 4, my second favorite of the series when I played it, but all the work they have since done to basically ignore everything they did in 4 and cheapen it in 5 then ignore everything they did in 5 in Infinite does the series a huge disservice. Because I am a big fan of sticking to your narrative guns. They may've done a lot wrong in the first season and a lot of controversial aspects but they decided to keep on going on them. The emotional supression pellets, Makee, and Kwan. And depending on where they go I could buy the supression pellets continuing to be referenced because while I objected to their inclusion in season 1 as it kind of cheapens psychological damage the team is actually having to work through some psycholigical issues in this episode. Though Vaneck's bit about the nature doccumentaries was hillarious. The other two elements kind of are a little weaker, didn't see much of Kwan but she has been clearly effected by what happeened at the end of the last season so that could be interesting and I groaned when I heard Makee's voice and wondered if she would be around haunting the Chief but turns out towards the end she might actually be alive afterall so it is interesting how they'll go about explaining that. And where they will go with the character.
The first opening scene of the show was also almost pitch perfect. Best action and choregraphy to date so far. I know the whole first person stuff from season 1 was kind of cool...but very gimmicky. This action season felt surprisingly powerful and fluid and it quickly establishes the Covenant as a pretty much threat. Indeed most of the stuff in this episode felt like a 'soft reboot' and refamiliarization from season 1. Yes we are going to honor the past and continue to use it, but lets catch you up with everything and let you know the writing will be more mature this go around. The glassing of the planet surface was properly horrifying and listening to the people die. It being held in Fog was a pretty good decision and Chief was bad ass. Plus the conversation between the Captain leading Shepard 7 and the local Shaman served as a quick reminder that the UNSC aren't exactly the noble angels of humanity while also drawing the point that maybe theya re jerks but you also have to trust them because there are larger forces now at play.
Meanwhile the Chief continues to suffer from psychological damage given his emotions, Makee, Cortana, and the removal of his pellet. He is really working on things in this. Having visions of Makee, which may be real now, pushing his team really hard, and having chats with a sex bot he fashioned in the likeness of Cortana. Kind of the big issue though is that Ackerson doesen't really trust or believe in him. He thinks what happened to Master Chief in the beginning of the episode(s) was just in his head and he was halucinating because he is A. maybe comrpomised by Cortana. B. survived action against 30 Elites, at least, and C. no one could corborate his story since the Private he was with said she didn't see anything.
Now at this point we really don't know what is going on, sure seems Chief is legit and Ackerson comes off as being slime central but he is also seeing Makee again who I was quite sure was dead at this point and well Ackerson does bring up a good point. So he gets to the bottom of it and hunts down the Private at her home and asks questions. And when he confirms that the Private was indeed lying to Ackerson for her own reasons the relief on his face, perfectly played, indicates he was starting to believe it. Simultaneously though he makes the connection of what he truly is facing.
Meanwhile Ackerson is doing a really good job of being an ONI stooge and doing a lot of double dealing. Despite putting out a bounty on Halsey...he actually has Halsey imprisoned in a VR simulation...despite not caring too much for her or the AI research he has Cortana essentially boxed up. And I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to find out he had something to do with Soren's 'arrest'. It was also very telling when he told Cobalt team and assigned them to a no name mission to a no name planet that ended up being Reach...so he is just lying his pants off. Bit annoying here how they played the pronoun game throughout a lot of this.
Going into the season and knowing what we were getting I was knowing how close they were going to follow the story of Halo Reach...and whether or not SIlver Team was going to be a replacement for Noble team or if we were going to get Noble Team. And if the latter was the case were we going to get a story of Silver Team sacrificing themselves other then Chief like what Noble Team did to help Chief in the Halo Reach game? And from there if they are setting up Silver Team to be sacrificed what will they do to make those deaths meaningful and make sure we care about them since my biggest complaint in Halo Reach, at least to me, is that they almost didn't do anything to flesh out the rest of Noble Team and Noble 6 was usually fighting with just one or two of them and not a full cohesive unit. Keeping all of this in mind and that the other Spartans got almost any characterization in the first season...its quite noteworthy to see that the Spartans probably got more character development in a couple of scenes then during the entire first season. Kai is now becoming the 'team mom'. Riz is suffering from some sort of persistent mental and physical pain, and Vanack, admittedly the least developped of the lot still, is also getting his nature documentaries. All of this does suggest that they could be setting them up for a big fall. Or maybe not, after all Chief will continue to need other characters to bounce off of to make the show interesting.
On the Lore front and the ending front though well thanks to my latest watching I now know who Ackerson is and being a rival to Halsey. Number two when they said the words 'Visregard relay' and 'Episilon Eirdani' as Cobalt's destination my ears perked up quite instantly with an 'oh no'. What might be the best thing about this season is despite its slow pace things are moving really fast. Cortanna and chief have not been united, Ackerson is being a dick, Hallsey is in the wind, and the Covenant are already on Reach. Lets see if this is a weekly thing or if I am back more towards the end of the season but really enjoying it so far.

colfoley such a shame Firefly was never considered but yes Serenity issues good movie. If I see it in the guide invariably watch it but I also have it on DVD so I can watch it big screen with the home theatre sound. Wish I had access to my PC it's in the shop but here's the quote without the image. "There are some River's you don't cross."

If you can't run you walk, if you can't wale you crawl, and if you can't do that...well.

I am a leaf on the wind watch how I soar.
Think it's appropriate to use Kaylee quotes?

What's thta from I don't think I have seen her in anything other than Firefly and Serenity? Dead Like Me, a dramedy from the 2000's about "grim reapers". I rewatch it every five or so years. Cancelled after two seasons sadly, there's a crappy movie that caps it off but it's not great. That said, I'd still recommend it. The humour hits a niche and there are a couple parts that are pretty impactful.

Watching clips and saw this one.
Now this is more like event in the book. This is hooking and riding on Shai'Hulud. 👍
Have to 🤣 at other clips though. I have to ask; why are they not observing water customs? Because the director want the audience to see who's who. Same principle why the cast of Band of Brothers were asked to remove their helmets though in real life, not a foolish soldier would do it in a war zone.
Have to yet to watch the newer Dune movies. Would likely buy bluray so I can skip over parts that are not true to the novel.

Things are different to the book otherwise it would run too long and hence two moves. However they use clever ways to abridge stuff I think, thoroughly enjoyed it and have watched it 3 times. It benefits from having a good sound system if you don't see it at the cinema.
