I'm finding this a fascinating read: someone polled the Dragon Age subreddit and got all kinds of statistics about the player base and how they approach the games. Very, very thorough, with a lot of curious info. Wasn't sure where this should go, but I figured this is the best subforum for general DA stuff?

That might be what I say at parties, but the truth is, if I'm going to spend 40+ hours looking at a butt, it might as well be one I like looking at.

Really interesting findings. Not surprised by much. Way more LGBTQ+ people than I thought (25%). We are everywhere it seems. I also knew that most people would support mages but WOW is that choice in particular very skewed. And I’m still spilling a single tear for how few people appreciate the awesomeness of the dwarves!

What did surprise me was 70% of female characters romancing either Solas or Cullen as their 'canon'. You thought it would be higher or lower? I cant decide if that’s low or high. It’s high considering how many options are in the remaining 30% (Josephine, Sera, Blackwall, Bull, and no romance). But it’s low considering that Solas is clearly the most plot relevant and Cullen has a rabid cult....er, I mean fan base.

The main thing I got from this was that men are far more open to playing any kind of / a very diverse range of characters then women are. I find this, just as expected actually based on personal anecdotes. my hubby will play any kind of character (male, female, straight, gay, everything in between - including romances, good or evil personalities), I'm the picky one rarely moving from my RL situations, and beliefs xD

I did actually expect those two to comprise the 'majority' of female PC romances, just not by that much. I was thinking it would be hovering at just over the 50% mark combined. Especially with the demographic of how many female players were lesbian in the results. Not that you have to follow your own sexuality in game romances of course, but I guess I figured that it would show through more than it did.

I made a joke about it my first post, but it is actually true. I am a straight white atheist male in real life. While I'm fine being that in games as well, if I don't have to be, then cool. Maybe I will be and maybe I won't be. It's part of why I replay DA games so often.

Maybe I will be and maybe I won't be. It's part of why I replay DA games so often. I think that’s exactly correct. It’s easier for a straight white male to find other games that let you play as a straight white male, so when there are options, they are more likely to venture out and try something new. Compared to people from underrepresented communities who don’t have as many chances to play characters that are like them so they are more likely to pick that option in games with choices. Which is what you see many women and/or LGBTQ+ people saying. It’s why I have a hard time playing as a woman in Bioware games. There are usually a few m/m romances options for me so by the time I get through a second or third playthrough doing those stories, I’ve exhausted the main plot variations and just never get around to playing my female protagonist playthrough.

I made a joke about it my first post, but it is actually true. Yeah, I always play a woman first if the game gives me an option. And if an RPG doesn't give me that option, I probably just ... don't play it. I'm fine with male protagonists in other genres, but if I'm in the mood for an RPG I'm in the mood to make a character and I specifically want her to be a her.
I'm not surprised there seem to be a lot of female players who feel the same. I have played a lot of male Wardens, Hawkes and Inquisitors (in fact it's about fifty-fifty across all my play throughs) but they're always on later. non-'canon' runs.

The only thing that surprised me was that the vast majority were pro-mage. Like I expected around 55/45 or something but nah, way off. Also the number of women that have Blackwall as canon romance was pitiful. Should've made him bisexual or gay

I'd submit that these are the statistics of the subreddit, i.e. of people who are enough into the franchise to still regularly talk about it over six years after the last game, not the entire player base. According to BioWare's own telemetry for Dragon Age Origins, for example, 80% of players chose the human noble origin. I bet that just the vast majority of those doesn't post on Reddit - or here for that matter. Also, 3 out of 7 "cool responses" in the religion section are "fuck the chantry".

They acknowledge that though, right from the start. "In this section we will investigate the general demographics of the Reddit dragon age players." I don't think there's any question that the data from this survey, and BW's data on all players, are going to be different. Some by a little, some by a lot.

I am reading through the results now on this one because now I am curious of course and I am wondering if this is one of the surveys I actually partook in...then I got to the political question and know I didn't. .

The sample population is definitely a subset of a subset, for sure. And due to that self selection bias there is going to be some funky results that wouldn’t be applicable to the DA player base at large. But some interesting stats emerged, nonetheless.

And after finishing it this fandom, or at least the subset of the subset... though I have seen these sentiments repeated elsewhere...drives me up the wall sometimes.

Reviewing the questions, I think I definitely took part in that survey, though not from reddit. It was posted on a blog. Some wordings are... off? I mean, how does female players being more likely to choose elven PCs make the "obessessed"? I'm somewhat surprised that Morrigan is more popular as a canon romance for straight male PCs than Leliana. Thought most would ultimately write off Morrigan as "too bitchy/evil". But I personally wouldn't pair her with a Cousland (not that I ever played a male one past Ostagar), so what do I know. What did surprise me was 70% of female characters romancing either Solas or Cullen as their 'canon'. I was absolutely unsurprised. What surprised me was the 63.7% agnostic/atheist. I didn't expect it to be that high. Overall, great survey! Same here. I expected more monotheism motivated/influenced Chantry apologism to be honest. It seems to be quite common in the fandom. At least those parts lacking what some would call "liberal bias". The only thing that surprised me was that the vast majority were pro-mage. Like I expected around 55/45 or something but nah, way off. Well, if 63-ish % identify as agnostic/atheist, why should they be in favour of a bunch of entitled thuggist zealots like the TO? Also, 3 out of 7 "cool responses" in the religion section are "fuck the chantry". Well, that last one I prefer over what would be "cool contrarian" in this case, like "Bow to Maker"or "Fuck the whiny robes". "Blaspehmer!!!!!!11" when addressing other community members who don't buy Chantry rhetoric also seemed popular at times. And after finishing it this fandom, or at least the subset of the subset... though I have seen these sentiments repeated elsewhere...drives me up the wall sometimes. Generally speaking, me too. But I guess it is a totally different wall.

Also the number of women that have Blackwall as canon romance was pitiful. Should've made him bisexual or gay I actually like his redemption arc. I like how he flirts. He chooses to bang you, twice, without telling you who he is. I don't like how if you sleep with him, you get left nude by yourself. I didn't want to see myself naked, I wanted to see HIM naked, so what is this? I find his anger during the judgement a bit bipolar. And then there is no cool wedding in trespasser. Instead, a weird scene where you have PTSD about him disappearing. Not to mention, if you make him a Warden, he dies. Cullen's is just crafted better from a romance standpoint

Gabe Heiland @norseartemis So this...this is SO COOL. We're seriously in awe at the studio that someone took time to do this thorough a job!
It doesn't always line up with what we know from general population but that alone makes this, as a focus group, so SO fascinating.
