Dragon Age: Dark Fortress (Comic)

In the next comic, Shirallas kills everyone but Fenris, who he spares as an act of cruel mercy. What a twist!

... That probably won’t happen, but I think we all agree that someone is going to die.

Now what would be a nice irony would be that Fenris is struggling against Shirallas and is saved by a mage, either Francesca, intentionally, or Tractus, unintentionally. Both were individuals that his initial instinct was the kill on sight, in the case of Tractus for reasons other than simply being a mage, but it would vindicate Vaea in taking action to prevent him from killing him beyond simply getting into the castle.

I think Marius is going to be involved in the fight in some way.  After all, much has always been made of him having been trained by the same guy as Shirallas and apparently that training makes him someone that most mages would wish to avoid confronting.

Also, the Venatori have been assuming that Shirallas would automatically fight for them because they control him.  I'm more inclined to think that the process would likely have driven him insane so that he responds to no one but simply goes on a killing spree.  In fact if he was trained to be a magekiller before the process, would he not simply revert to his training and attack mages?   So the heroes are obliged to bring him down simply because he is a threat to anyone who gets in his way.

Please be good. This comic series is literally the only good BioWare-related thing for me now.

I seem to recall that in Knight Errant Tessa and Marius were the original Inquisition agents working on a line of enquiry involving red lyrium and since Charter is both Tessa's lover and the person who recruited (blackmailed) Vaea into freeing them and then completing the quest involving the red lyrium journal, that would account for them ending up working as a team on behalf of the Inquisition tracking the progress of the idol further north. Since they were heading for Tevinter, it might be presumed that Marius would be useful to the others in providing some local knowledge.

As for why Tessa and Marius were the agents involved with the red lyrium plot in the first place, that was likely because they had been the main characters in the previous comic and rather than introduce two completely new individuals, they were brought into the latest narrative.

Well to be fair, you could argue they wouldn't know about the new secret passage if Tessa hadn't done the leg work of finding Tractus, even if Vaea was the one who had to talk Fenris out of killing him. Tessa and Marius do probably suffer from not being the creations of the authors so are less developed as a result.

However, even in Magekiller I formed the impression that Tessa was the one who scouted things out whilst Marius was mostly the one who did the killing. It seemed to me that her main purpose in that series was to be the narrator of the story, in other words dialogue. So if their actual creator didn't really do a good job of making people care about these characters, which judging from many comments on these boards he didn't, it is hardly the fault of the current writers if you still don't.

To be honest, I was rather surprised when Marius and Tessa popped up again in Blue Wraith, having been totally absent from Deception. They were clearly needed from a plot perspective, so Vaea could still refrain from breaking her no killing stance even though they needed to stop the pursuing Qunari and later go off on her own with Autumn after Francesca without leaving Ser Aaron in the lurch with only Calix for support, but they do suffer from being extras rather than main characters. As such, I would agree that they are expendable and least likely to be missed (except by Charter), although that would be something of a cop out but no different really to the endless succession of landing party members in Star Trek who tend to kick the bucket to give a sense of jeopardy without sacrificing any of the star roles.

Magekiller was crushingly dissapointing. I'll always associate with Marius and Tessa with that dissapointment. So I'll not weep if they do kick the bucket.

(Also, they've been nearly fecking useless since then.)

If I were to pick someone I want to go, that would be Tessa. I don't even remember what her story is, and I did read Magekiller.

Vaea remains my favorite in this comic series.
