I'm looking to replace my 1080ti. The PSU I have is a year old and can handle the higher wattage of the new GPUs. The question is what card should I get? I'm sticking to Nvidia. Any recommendations? At most I'm looking at a RTX 3080 but I'm not sure if I should go for 3080ti as the latter uses more watts. I don't have a habit of overclocking GPUs. I'm looking for stability and reliable performance. Any recommendations appreciated. Since 2013 I have been using EVGA GPUs beginning with the 760 Dual FTW, and that is the only EVGA GPU I have ever had to RMA. The amazing thing about EVGA is, yes they are more expensive than other brands....But their Customer Service and their Warranties are the best of the best. When I RMA'd that 760, I didn't just get it repaired and sent back....I didn't even just get another card that had been refurbished and 'quality checked'-- I got a brand new 760 Dual FTW of no cost to me and within three days. I have since gone on to own two 980 FTW 2s, a 1080 FTW 2 with ICX Cooling and now my current 2080 Super FTW 3 Ultra Gaming with ICX II which is coming up to two or three years old (I would have to check my EVGA account to be sure). I also have been using EVGA Power Supplies exclusively since 2016 and they've been the best PSU I have ever used. THeir stability, performance, power delivery and industry-leading 10 year warranty is well worth the 300 to 400 CAD price tag. Bottom line is...although they are a little more expensive (at least here)...I use EVGA for GPUs and PSUs because of their quality, performance, Customer Service and Warranty. The higer end GPU models from EVGA (like the FTW series for example) are Factory OC'd out of the box so you don't ever have to worry about doing it manually and messing things up. Althought I have never used their GPUs (only Motherboards from Gigabyte since 2016).....if you (understandably) can't afford EVGA, you may want to consider Gigabyte as an alternative choice. I have read several reviews on different Gigabyte GPUs and they've all been between 3.8 and 4.8 Stars out of 5 on sites like Guru3d, Tomshardware, hardwareCanucks, overclock3d.net and LinusTechTips. With few rare exceptions that claim 'defect' Gigabyte by all accounts appears to be a good alternative for solid price to performance and quality. I (personally) stay away from MSI as I have heard from people at Canada Computers that the bearings in their GPU fans and the PCBs aren't as solid as say ASUS, Gigabyte or EVGA. They're flimsy and wear out quicker. THe PCBs have a considerable amount of flex and the fans are quite prone to coil whine and seizure especially anywhere after that 2 year mark.

I couldn't cough up that kind of money, so I went with the 3060. It's plenty good for my needs. Not sure about the 3070, but I'm sure someone will know if it's worth the price.

And on the other end of the scale you have the 60s and 50s cards which are considered your basement and entry level cards for everyday computing (not 1440p or 4K/HDR bells and whisteles Gaming).

The reality is that none of these things matters right now because nothing is ever in stock and it is impossible to buy a GPU at MSRP.
If you're okay with giving your money to some scalper on eBay and paying about 50% over MSRP, you can just buy whatever that fits your budget. 3070, 3070 Ti, 3080, 3080 Ti, or 3080 12GB are all decent upgrade over a GTX 1080 Ti.
Personally, I don't recommend supporting those scalper scumbags but sometimes you don't really have a choice.

Well after a ping pong with the technician (repair, build, etc) I always go to I settled on the RTX 3080ti. I asked him if the 2060 - 2070s are available but apparently, they're harder to get or not available. Thanks for the tips, Energizer Bunny 211, rewindbutton, bmwcrazy. 😄

I got the speakers and they are in storage right now. That said my build is on hold right now. I have been suffering from severe health issues for the last few months. Not going to be on much until its all resolved. I was afraid something was wrong; sorry to hear that. Take care of yourself now, you hear! Thank you. Not all is resolved yet. Though at least I am able to get to a computer now.

AAAAAAnnnnndddd back to looking at some components -memory and the motherboard again.
Reason is three-fold: 1. The motherboard I currently have would require BIOS update for the 5900x. Usually not a bad thing right? Well power here can be unreliable sometimes in the summer more. And since its nearing that time I don't dare chance it.
2.That combined with the no fan on the chipset heat-sink make it better as well.
3. Friend of mine has a machine that is basically over a decade old and falling apart.
He is still using a 8600GTS if you want to know. So giving him the motherboard, and ram and getting him a 3500x for it. Will definitely be an upgrade.
So got this coming in the mail: GIGABYTE X570S AORUS PRO AX 7 Fan connectors on the motherboard is plus.

Finding a 2xxx series card in a new state would be few and hard between. It is true the 2xxx series can be found used but the price of such cards seems to be at exorbitant prices. Maybe due to the possibility of people with 2xxx series cards trying to offload it in place of getting a 3xxx series card. Some 2xxx series cards are even -in some cases exceeding all but the current 3080 and above in price and its used vs new. Not necessarily scalpers -then again maybe they are. Strange as it is with GPU prices starting to trickle downward on new 3xxx series cards. Down $100 in the first 14 days of March. By May they may be $100-$0 above MSRP.

It can now be acquired for $569 if you acquire from the company I mention in the next post. Also more on the 3070 series in the next post as well.

Personally, I don't recommend supporting those scalper scumbags but sometimes you don't really have a choice. This has changed a little bit for one manufacture that seems to have stock in at least all nvidia current card lines... Except for the 3070 and 1660 line. Maybe due to the limit they have placed on cards. I went to order one and it said limit of 3 per house hold and verification would be needed. Don't know if its a good way to keep the scalpers under control. Granted maybe its because this manufacture doesn't have the best track record. The one thing I can say is that they seem to have cards in stock -if you go to their website especially. Though I don't condone them being based in Hong Kong. Of course I am speaking of Zotac. Correct me if I am wrong but are they not a bit low on price given the current environment: GeForce RTX™ 3050 > $399 GeForce RTX™ 3060 > $569 GeForce RTX™ 3060 TI > $700 ? Evidence to back this up: www.newegg.com/zotac-geforce-rtx-3060-ti-zt-a30610h-10mlhr/p/N82E16814500518?Though Buildzoid does seem to like one of their card lines: I believe he claims -that to him its the best of all the 3070 TI's. Something that I happen to agree with since I always did prefer all the '70 series.

Maybe I just get the crapshoot bottom of the barrel parts up this part of mountains. That said I agree Gigabyte is a good choice for almost everything -except for graphics cards. They require more power and run higher in the temperature department than almost every other card manufacture. If not for EVGA PSU troubles and PSU recalls I would probably use them as well. Till they straighten out their manufacturing issues I think I would stick with Seasonic.

at least I am able to get to a computer now. Welcome back! Glad to hear you're feeling better. Thank you. Don't expect to see me as much though. Not 100% more like 65% Usually not a bad thing right? Back when I was a technician, I did hundreds of BIOS updates; it's been a trivial task ever since. I don't recall ever messing it up, but I update only when necessary. Power outages are a no-go of course. Yeah. I just don't like the danger since the power just went out here before my first post back for about 3 hours. I can just visulize starting the BIOS update and pop goes the power and there goes the board. Best to just plain avoid. More emotion than I am used to but it fits:

How much did you pay for the 3060? About $700. The price has come down since. Well save a bit and get another 3060 maybe you could run them in SLI... Yeah I know its not a thing anymore. Though that would give you the performance of a 3070 maybe? Will definitely be an upgrade. Definitely Absolutely -especially when he isn't expecting it to come with the RX Vega 56.

Not really familiar with the brand. www.cgdirector.com/zotac-gpu-brand/What most will claim is that they skimp on build quality to make the card cheaper. I have used 3 Zotac cards: 9800GT, 760TI & 970 I can tell you that yes they skip on two things: The heat-sink material and the GPU fans. THIS is made up for by three things: 1. In the newer cards pure copper heatsinks pipes. 2. Heat-sink pipes that are usually double the size of other companies. 3. They usually have more fins or longer range heat-sinks or both. The 760TI and the 970 both have had their fans die and the cards handled an hour at 79-81* C with no fan. Not bad? Try that in a 90*F enviroment -was one hot summer.

Buildzoid is great, one of the few Youtubers I actually trust. True. Even though I don't over clock I look to his advice to build long term builds. If he says this card can be pushed farther then I will under clock it and a card that would last 5 years will last a decade.

Correct me if I am wrong but are they not a bit low on price given the current environment: GeForce RTX™ 3050 > $399 GeForce RTX™ 3060 > $569 GeForce RTX™ 3060 TI > $700 ? Though Buildzoid does seem to like one of their card lines: I believe he claims -that to him its the best of all the 3070 TI's. Something that I happen to agree with since I always did prefer all the '70 series. Also keep in mind that the 3070 was supposed to have an MSRP of $499. I wonder how many people were actually able to get one for $499. I couldn't get any 3070 or 3080 Founders Edition at MSRP at all when I was shopping a video card for my brother's build. Best Buy would restock and immediately sell out in seconds. I eventually had to settle for a 3090 Founders Edition for $1499. Let's hope the 40-series release later this year will be better. I'm just enjoying the plummeting GPU prices. I hope those scalpers all get burned.

1. The motherboard I currently have would require BIOS update for the 5900x. Usually not a bad thing right? Well power here can be unreliable sometimes in the summer more. And since its nearing that time I don't dare chance it. That's not really an issue if you use a UPS. If you have a desktop PC, you should always run it through a UPS. I use the Cyberpower 1500VA sinewave UPS for all my PCs. I even use them for my TVs, receivers, speakers, routers, and modem. Plus most mobos support BIOS flashback nowadays. So if you screw up with a corrupt BIOS you can just re-flash it with the flashback feature. It's not a big deal.

Also how much time does a full charge get you on one? I would like it to be able to run 5 hours without a charge. That is an hour longer than the average length of a power outage here. Also remember this system will have ALOT of fans, speakers, theWhiteSnowBall, powered joystick and wheel with pedals. How long would that UPS work in this scenario? Also isn't it dangerous to daisy chain UPS's?

That is an hour longer than the average length of a power outage here. Also remember this system will have ALOT of fans, speakers, theWhiteSnowBall, powered joystick and wheel with pedals. How long would that UPS work in this scenario? Also isn't it dangerous to daisy chain UPS's? A UPS is mainly to give you enough time to save your work and properly shut down your computer to prevent data loss during a power outage. You should only connect the essential devices to the battery like your PC and your monitor. Not your speakers. Let's say your PC and your monitor use 500 watts under heavy load. A 1500VA UPS would give you only about 10 minutes of runtime under these conditions. However your PC is mostly idle when it's flashing BIOS (under 200 watts), so it should easily give you more than 30 minutes of runtime to finish the task. You shouldn't daisy chain anything either. It's definitely a bad idea. If you want more battery runtime, you can use a large UPS for your PC and a separate UPS for your other devices like your monitor. If you have cable internet, I also recommend running the coaxial cable to the UPS before connecting it to the modem. This way it also protects your modem from the power surges through the coaxial cable. Anyway, you should use one especially if you live in an area where power outages are common. If you're looking for something that can power your PC for more than 5 hours, get a standby generator for your house that is safe for sensitive electronics.

Well save a bit and get another 3060 Nah, my current setup is fast enough for now. My only AAA title that I play is TW3, and it runs just fine. handled an hour at 79-81* C with no fan. That's how I fried one of my cards. Don't remember what it was anymore, Geforce something. The fan failed without a warning and my gaming session ended abruptly.

I wonder how many people were actually able to get one for $499. Currently my local store is selling at USD $1100. I eventually had to settle for a 3090 Founders Edition for $1499. That was an absolute steal! I would have begged and borrowed to get one for that price. It's current price is USD $ 2400! I hope those scalpers all get burned. Hear hear!

UPS would give you only about 10 minutes of runtime That's how it usually works. There are heavy duty models for commercial use, but we are still talking about having enough time to power down a server. a standby generator for your house that is safe for sensitive electronics. This, or a UPS with a generator mode.
